United States Population Policies And Environmental Ethics: Addressing Population Growth From The Biocentric Perspective, Philip Davis Macwilliams Jan 2000

United States Population Policies And Environmental Ethics: Addressing Population Growth From The Biocentric Perspective, Philip Davis Macwilliams

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

When the environmental movement began to surge in the 1960s, concerns were raised over the prospects of the U.S. population growing to an unsustainable level and causing irreparable harm to the environment and our quality of life. Unfortunately, population growth has not been given the priority it deserves not because it is not an important issue, but because of our failure to view population growth, and all environmental issues, from a biocentric outlook. It is this paradigm shift towards biocentrism that we as moral agents should be making and which will subsequently cause us to view population growth in a …

Effects Of A 30-Minute Walk On Ground Reaction Forces During Walking With An External Load, Cheryl M Cardillo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

To investigate effects of a 30-minute walk on kinetics of walking with an external load, ten subjects performed five walking trials across a force platform for five conditions. Walking speed was 1.57m/s for all conditions. The first two conditions had subjects walk without (C1) and with (C2) backpack load. Subjects then walked on a treadmill at 1.57m/s for 30 minutes. At 10 minute intervals GRF data were collected. In comparing C1 and C2, dependent variables F1, F2, and Favg revealed increases of 10.45%, 13.68%, and 11.75% respectively (p < 0.01) indicating a mechanical response. No effect for time was observed for any variable tested. Therefore, the null hypothesis that load does not have an effect on vertical GRF was rejected. The null hypothesis that time does not have an effect on vertical GRF was not rejected. Overall, forces were elevated during load carrying, which may result in added stress on anatomical structures.

The Gamma Distribution As An Alternative To The Lognormal Distribution In Environmental Applications, Ross Joseph Iaci Jan 2000

The Gamma Distribution As An Alternative To The Lognormal Distribution In Environmental Applications, Ross Joseph Iaci

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In environmental applications dealing with data from contaminated sites the positively skewed lognormal distribution has been the most commonly used model. The upper confidence limit (UCL) of the arithmetic mean of a lognormal population is computed by using the H-statistics. Recent concerns have arisen to the effectiveness of the H-Statistic based UCL for the mean of the lognormal distribution in instances of moderately to highly skewed data sets. In this paper the positively skewed Gamma distribution is considered as an alternative to the lognormal distribution and is shown to produce more reasonable UCL's for the mean.

An Outcomes Study Of Diabetes Education, Tara Lynn Mcgill

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a twelve-hour diabetic education program on self-care behaviors and level of integration of diabetes in patients with type 1 & type 2 diabetes. Using the Theory of Integration (Hernandez, 1995) as the study's conceptual framework, an outcomes study was conducted. Thirty-five questionnaires were distributed to subjects at the initial class of the diabetes education program, with 22 being able to be utilized for analysis; The results of this study showed that there was a significant increase in the level of integration of diabetes (t(21) = 2.998, p < .005). When individual statements of integration were assessed, three areas were found to have a significant increase. These included, understanding how diabetes affects one's body by living with diabetes (t(21) = 2.890, p < .005), being aware of bodily cues that distinguish blood glucose levels (t(21) = 2.822, p < .005), and knowing more about taking care of one's diabetes more than anyone (t(21) = 3.044, p < .005); Analysis of individual statements of self-care behavior included significant changes in eating the foods according to a diabetes meal plan (t(22) = 2.802, p < .005), eating snacks at the right time of day (t(21) = 3.049, p < .005), knowing how to treat a hypoglycemic reaction (t(22) 3.323, p < .005) and carrying a sugar source to treat those hypoglycemic reactions (t(22) = 3.045, p < .005). Significant increases were also noted in the logging of blood glucose results (t(22) = 3.239, p < .005), and in obtaining the amount of exercise needed for diabetes (t(22) = 3.023, p < .005). This study is an important initial evaluation of the effects of a diabetes education program on diabetes patients' selfcare behaviors and level of integration.

The Removal Of Perchlorate From Waters By A Membrane-Immobilized Biofilm, Jian Liu Jan 2000

The Removal Of Perchlorate From Waters By A Membrane-Immobilized Biofilm, Jian Liu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigated the feasibility of using a membrane-immobilized biofilm reactor to remove perchlorate from waters. Perchlorate (ClO4 -) is easily reduced under anaerobic conditions to harmless chloride (Cl-). In this system, the perchlorate-contaminated water is physically separated from the biofilm by the membrane. Perchlorate diffuses, without the need of external energy, to the degrading biofilm, thereby minimizing the contamination of the product water by microbes. A mixed microbial culture capable biologically of reducing perchlorate was enriched and attached to the membrane surface. The results demonstrated the feasibility of using a membrane-immobilized biofilm reactor to remove perchlorate from waters. In …

Chlorine is used extensively in the chemical industry and for disinfection of drinking water. Many methods have been reported for the determination of chlorine species. Fluorescence quenching to determine chlorine is a promising method because of its high sensitivity and selectivity. This study focuses on development of a sulfonamide-based collection system for low levels of chlorine in air. Quantitation of chlorine is based on the quenching of the fluorescence signal observed when chlorine reacts with the fluorescent sulfonamide compound. Both a direct fluorimetric and a fluorescence-HPLC method have been established. Linear relationships are found between the fluorescence intensity or HPLC …

Physiological Effects Of Progressive Relaxation In Trained Runners During Submaximal Treadmill Exercise, Thomas James Westendorf Jan 2000

Physiological Effects Of Progressive Relaxation In Trained Runners During Submaximal Treadmill Exercise, Thomas James Westendorf

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

To determine the physiological effects of a one-week progressive relaxation protocol on exercise efficiency, five trained, male runners volunteered to participate in this study. The results of this study show that it is possible to reduce heart rate during progressive relaxation at rest, after one week of training. In addition, the results of this study indicate that although there was a significant reduction in minute ventilation during exercise, VO 2 did not change. These results suggests that there was no carry-over effect while exercising, therefore one week of progressive relaxation may not be long enough or an effective technique to …

Housing Location Decision Under Environmental Risk: The Effects Of The Yucca Mountain Waste Repository, Christine Noel Dwyer Jan 2000

Housing Location Decision Under Environmental Risk: The Effects Of The Yucca Mountain Waste Repository, Christine Noel Dwyer

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Yucca Mountain is the site of a potential high-level nuclear waste repository in Nevada. The risks to health and safety of transporting and storing nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain may induce the residents of Nevada to move. When offered compensation, residents will weigh potential negative effects to their health from transporting and storing nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain against the amount of money offered. The presence of a threshold value between the bid amount offered and the level of risk perception indicates that at some level of risk, people cannot be induced to stay by compensation. My models indicate that …
