Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery 2000 Annual Report Jan 2000

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery 2000 Annual Report

Rocky Mountain Wolf Recovery: Annual Reports

Gray wolf populations (Canis lupus) were extirpated from the western U.S. by the 1930s. Subsequently, wolves from Canada occasionally dispersed south into Montana and Idaho but failed to survive long enough to reproduce. Public attitudes toward predators changed and wolves received legal protection with the passage of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in 1973. Wolves began to successfully recolonize northwest Montana in the early 1980s. By 1995, 6 packs lived entirely in northwestern Montana. In 1995 and 1996, 66 wolves from southwestern Canada were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park (YNP) (31 wolves) and central Idaho (35 wolves).

A Review Of The Ammonia Issue And Pork Production, Janeth Colina, Austin Lewis, Phillip S. Miller

Nebraska Swine Reports

During the last few decades, an increasing interest in, and respect for, the environment has arisen. This has consequences for livestock production. Air can become polluted by noxious odors from animal husbandry. A particular example is odor emission from pig buildings, because in several parts of the world pig production has become highly specialized, industrialized and concentrated geographically. Air quality in pig facilities, as it influences the well-being of animals and workers, has become a major concern for pork producers. Odors emanating from pig slurry are an increasing source of environmental pollution as well as a nuisance to the human …

The Use Of Plasma Urea As An Indicator Of Protein Status In Growing-Finishing Pigs, Robert Fischer, Phillip S. Miller, Austin J. Lewis Jan 2000

The Use Of Plasma Urea As An Indicator Of Protein Status In Growing-Finishing Pigs, Robert Fischer, Phillip S. Miller, Austin J. Lewis

Nebraska Swine Reports

An experiment is being conducted on commercial swine operations to determine if plasma urea concentration can be used as an indicator of protein status in growing-finishing pigs. Swine producers in Eastern Nebraska are being selected to participate in this on-farm study. The experiment includes the completion of a 30-question survey and an on-farm visit for the collection of blood and feed samples. The survey includes questions about genetics, nutrition, housing and health. Preliminary results suggest that crude protein is overfed in most finishing diets. Gilts consistently have lower plasma urea concentrations than barrows when gilts and barrows are fed the …

Extruded-Expelled Soybean Meal For Pigs, Duane Reese, Larry L. Bitney Jan 2000

Extruded-Expelled Soybean Meal For Pigs, Duane Reese, Larry L. Bitney

Nebraska Swine Reports

A review of the value of extruded-expelled soybean meal (ESBM) for pigs was conducted. Results from two studies where the growth performance of weanling pig was evaluated suggested that the feeding value of ESBM relative to solvent-extracted soybean meal (SSBM) is not consistent. The economic value of ESBM relative to SSBM was estimated from pig performance data and the metabolizable energy content of corn, ESBM, and SSBM. When ESBM is used to replace 44% CP SSBM in growing-finishing pig diets, it is worth 0 to $36.29 per ton more than 44% CP SSBM, assuming 44% CP SSBM and corn cost …

A Textile Enterprise As A Tool Of Economic Development: Part Ii, June Pearson Bland Jan 2000

A Textile Enterprise As A Tool Of Economic Development: Part Ii, June Pearson Bland

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The production and trade of handwoven textiles were well established in West Africa when the Europeans arrived in the fifteenth century; however, the use of handwoven cloth, except for ceremonial purposes, was soon replaced by imported manufactured cloth. The volume of less expensive fabric from Europe influenced this change, which coincided with the Islamic tradition of voluminous gowns, the aesthetic qualities of cloth created by foreign technology, and the alteration of the economic structure as a result of colonialism. Although textile manufacturing is now established to some degree in West African countries in the forty years since the countries' independence, …

Nutrients In Groundwaters Of The Conterminous United States, 1992-1995, Bernard Nolan, Jeffrey Stoner

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Results of a national water quality assessment indicate that nitrate is detected in 71% of groundwater samples, more than 13 times as often as ammonia, nitrite, organic nitrogen, and orthophosphate, based on a common detection threshold of 0.2 mg/L. Shallow groundwater (typically 5 m deep or less) beneath agricultural land has the highest median nitrate concentration (3.4 mg/L), followed by shallow groundwater beneath urban land (1.6 mg/L) and deeper groundwater in major aquifers (0.48 mg/L). Nitrate exceeds the maximum contaminant level, 10 mg/L as nitrogen, in more than 15% of groundwater samples from 4 of 33 major aquifers commonly used …

Lex Satis Iusta, Jeremy Waldron Jan 2000

Lex Satis Iusta, Jeremy Waldron

Faculty Articles

"Lex iniusta non est lex." John Finnis reminds us, at the end of Natural Law and Natural Rights, that the central tradition of natural law theory did not formulate its thesis about the relation between law and justice by saying things like "an unjust edict cannot be law" or "a morally iniquitous command cannot be law." Instead, says Finnis, "the tradition... has affirmed that unjust LAWS are not law." He offers several elaborate explanations-and, I should say at once, they are helpful and convincing explanations-of why this paradox is not a contradiction. His explanations appeal to the distinction between normative, …

Vicarious Liability Of Health Plans For Medical Injuries, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2000

Vicarious Liability Of Health Plans For Medical Injuries, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

This English influence will prove itself again in this brief article on the role of vicarious liability and managed care organizations (MCOs) which has been in the news so much today. As usual, I think that the best way to cut into this problem is by indirection. The novelty of liability for MCOs is best placed in perspective by comparing the claims for liability here with those which could be made, both in England and the United States, by employees against their employers for work-related accidents.

Democracy, Science, And Free Trade: Risk Regulation On Trial At The World Trade Organization, Robert L. Howse Jan 2000

Democracy, Science, And Free Trade: Risk Regulation On Trial At The World Trade Organization, Robert L. Howse

Faculty Articles

Among the most common critiques of globalization is that it increasingly constrains the ability of democratic communities to make unfettered choices about policies that affect the fundamental welfare of their citizens, including those of health and safety, the environment, and consumer protection. Traditionally, free trade rules were about constraining border measures such as tariffs and quantitative restrictions on imports. Increasingly, however, such rules include requirements and constraints addressed directly to domestic regulation. For example, a country's policies with respect to intellectual property rights or its regulatory approach to network industries, such as telecommunications, may now be fundamentally shaped by rules …

Collaborative Research: Conflicts On Authorship, Ownership, And Accountability, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss Jan 2000

Collaborative Research: Conflicts On Authorship, Ownership, And Accountability, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss

Faculty Articles

In this Article, Professor Dreyfuss explores the field of collaborative research in the realm of intellectual property law. Traditionally, scientists, artists, and professors developed ideas alone, utilizing only their own knowledge and research to complete their works. Recently, however, due in part to an increasing need for specialization, the globalization of the marketplace, the rapid growth of the Internet, and an expansion in intellectual property law, collaborative production is replacing individual efforts. Collaborative efforts have posed an array of new and challenging legal problems. Parties sometimes find themselves without a clear sense of who has rights to royalties, who can …

The Social And Economic Status Of Eritrean Women: Advances And Reversals, Asgedet Stefanos Jan 2000

The Social And Economic Status Of Eritrean Women: Advances And Reversals, Asgedet Stefanos

Trotter Review

In assessing the post-independence status of women in Eritrea, I want to pose two questions. First, how did the leadership of the national liberation movement, the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF), embark on promoting women's emancipation, given the attitudes firmly rooted in the minds of both men and women that ran counter to the idea of an emancipated woman? Secondly, what changes were established in Eritrean women's public and personal lives during the national liberation struggle — in politics, economics, and the social realm?

This is an excerpt of the speech delivered by Asgedet Stefanos at the 20th Anniversary of …

Comparable Worth: Pay Equity And Women Of Color, Elizabeth A. Sherman Jan 2000

Comparable Worth: Pay Equity And Women Of Color, Elizabeth A. Sherman

Trotter Review

The relationship between women of color and community economic development is fundamentally a question of income. And, for women, questions of income more often than not become questions of pay equity - whether or not women and men are receiving equal pay for equal, or comparable work. Because the economy retains entrenched vestiges of sexual discrimination, the solutions to such problems lie within the political realm, where laws to ensure equality are created and enforced. In this regard, women themselves have a vital role to play as activists focusing on mitigating the barriers to opportunity that have depressed women's well …

An Instrument To Assess Self-Statements During Public Speaking: Scale Development And Preliminary Psychometric Properties, Stefan G. Hofmann, Patricia Marten Dibartolo

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Public speaking is the most commonly reported fearful social situation. Although a number of contemporary theories emphasize the importance of cognitive processes in social anxiety, there is no instrument available to assess fearful thoughts experienced during public speaking. The Self-Statements During Public Speaking (SSPS) scale is a 10-item questionnaire consisting of two 5-item subscales, the Positive Self-Statements (SSPS-P) and the Negative Self-Statements subscale (SSPS-N). Four studies report on the development and the preliminary psychometric properties of this instrument.
