E-Commerce As A Competitive Advantage For Small Businesses: Overcoming Privacy And Security Issues, Ron Lennon, Julisse Oquist
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
The Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) trend have captivated people in every corner of the world. The presence of both individuals and businesses on the Internet grows every day. For example, in 1998 businesses' presence on the Internet grew so much that many described 1998 as the ".com" year. But why is it that the Internet is so attractive to all of us? The reason lies in the ease of use of the Internet, the speed of obtaining results, the amount of information available, and the global reach that the Internet has. For all these reasons, the Internet …
Two Models Of Corporate Social Responsibility To Communities, Alan Wallace
Two Models Of Corporate Social Responsibility To Communities, Alan Wallace
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
Corporations from the most economically developed countries have been joining together over the past 15 years to form organizations such as Caux Round Table, Social Venture Network, Business for Social Responsibility, and Canadian Business for Social Responsibility to widely promote corporate social responsibility and either to craft standards of social responsibility or to provide examples from members about how they enact corporate social responsibility. Although their views overlap, there are some inconsistencies in content, emphasis, rationales for corporate social responsibility, and audit recommendations. Examination of these four organizations reveals two quite different rationales for corporate social performance, one involving sharing …

Biotechnology And The Legal Constitution Of The Self: Managing Identity In Science, The Market, And Society, Jonathan Kahn
Biotechnology And The Legal Constitution Of The Self: Managing Identity In Science, The Market, And Society, Jonathan Kahn
UC Law Journal
This article revisits the case of Moore v. Regents of the University of California to explore and elaborate an approach that points toward a more effective and just manner of ordering the legal management of identity in the realm of biotechnology-and perhaps beyond.
First, Professor Kahn explores how the tort of appropriation of identity, as invoked by the California Appellate Court in Moore, opens up new approaches to inform and perhaps supplement principles of property law as a guide to managing genetic information or other materials that seem intimately bound up with a particular human subject.
Second, he analyzes how …
The Public Health Case For The Safe Storage Of Firearms: Adolescent Suicides Add One More Smoking Gun, Andrew J. Mcclurg
The Public Health Case For The Safe Storage Of Firearms: Adolescent Suicides Add One More Smoking Gun, Andrew J. Mcclurg
UC Law Journal
In this article, Professor McClurg makes the case for mandatory safe gun storage laws as a means of reducing adolescent suicides. He has argued in other articles in favor of safe storage as a means of reducing accidental shootings and criminal misuse of stolen guns. The article begins by analyzing firearms suicides in the U.S., which McClurg calls "the forgotten statistic in the gun control debate." He reviews numerous studies establishing a nexus between guns and suicide, particularly between guns in the home and adolescent suicide. He then examines ten different studies showing that large percentages of American gun owners …

Environmental And Psychological Challenges Facing Entrepreneurial Development In Transitional Economies, Fred Luthans, Alexander D. Stajkovic, Elina Stajkovic
Environmental And Psychological Challenges Facing Entrepreneurial Development In Transitional Economies, Fred Luthans, Alexander D. Stajkovic, Elina Stajkovic
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
In the former planned economies, a major result of the economic reform programs has been the resurgence of private entrepreneurship. As these countries have struggled to make the transition to a market-based economy over the past decade, the environment has played an important structural role in entrepreneurial development. However, from a psychological perspective, the environmental structural context affects human action through cognitive processes such as self-regulation. Thus, we first identify and analyze the effect of the political, economic, legal, and cultural environment on the development of entrepreneurship in transitional economies, mainly using the former Soviet Union and particularly the Republic …

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database
A retrospective study of various diagnostic postmortem techniques used in a 4-year surveillance program for detection of Mycobacterium bovis infection in wild white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) was conducted. The tests evaluated were routine histopathology, acid-fast staining, detection of acid-fast bacilli in culture, and an M. tuberculosis group-specific genetic probe applied to pure cultures. Each of these techniques were compared with a reference or “gold standard” of mycobacterial culture and identification. Histopathology, the most rapid form of testing for M. bovis infection in white-tailed deer samples, had a sensitivity of 98% and a specificity of 87%, resulting in a …

U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service Biological Opinion On The Operation Of The Missouri River Main Stem Reservoir System, Operation And Maintenance Of The Missouri River Bank Stabilization And Navigation Project, And Operation Of The Kansas River Reservoir System
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
The Corps of Engineers provides the primary operational management of the Missouri River and is responsible under the Endangered Species Act to take actions within its authorities to conserve listed species. On April 3, 2000, the Corps asked the Fish and Wildlife Service to formally consult under the Endangered Species Act on the Operations of the Missouri River Main Stem System, and related Operations of the Kansas River Tributary Reservoirs, and the Operations and Maintenance of the Missouri River Bank Stabilization and Navigation Project. The Corps of Engineers prepared biological assessments for each of these projects and determined that their …

Mercury Bioaccumulation In Fish In A Region Affected By Historic Gold Mining: The South Yuba River, Deer Creek, And Bear River Watersheds, California, 1999, Jason T. May, Roger L. Hothem, Charles N. Alpers, Matthew A. Law
United States Geological Survey: Publications
Mercury that was used historically for gold recovery in mining areas of the Sierra Nevada continues to enter local and downstream water bodies, including the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta and the San Francisco Bay of northern California. Methylmercury is of particular concern because it is the most prevalent form of mercury in fish and is a potent neurotoxin that bioaccumulates at successive trophic levels within food webs. In April 1999, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with several other agencies—the Forest Service (U.S. Department of Agriculture), the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the California State Water Resources …
Mercury Contamination From Historic Gold Mining In California, Charles N. Alpers, Michael P. Hunerlach
Mercury Contamination From Historic Gold Mining In California, Charles N. Alpers, Michael P. Hunerlach
United States Geological Survey: Publications
Mercury contamination from historic gold mines represents a potential risk to human health and the environment. This fact sheet provides background information on the use of mercury in historic gold mining and processing operations in California, and describes a new USGS project that addresses the potential risks associated with mercury from these sources, with emphasis on historic hydraulic mining areas. Miners used mercury (quicksilver) to recover gold throughout the western United States at both placer (alluvial) and hardrock (lode) mines. The vast majority of mercury lost to the environment in California was from placer-gold mines, which used hydraulic, drift, and …

Metals Transport In The Sacramento River, California, 1996–1997 Volume 2: Interpretation Of Metal Loads, Charles N. Alpers, Ronald C. Antweiler, Howard E. Taylor, Peter D. Dileanis, Joseph L. Domagalski
United States Geological Survey: Publications
Metals transport in the Sacramento River, northern California, from July 1996 to June 1997 was evaluated in terms of metal loads from sam-ples of water and suspended colloids that were collected on up to six occasions at 13 sites in the Sacramento River Basin. Four of the sampling periods (July, September, and November 1996; and May–June 1997) took place during relatively low-flow conditions and two sampling periods (December 1996 and January 1997) took place during high-flow and flooding conditions, respec-tively. This study focused primarily on loads of cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc, with secondary emphasis on loads of aluminum, iron, …
Cassin’S Sparrow (Aimophila Cassinii) Status Assessment And Conservation Plan, Janet M. Ruth
Cassin’S Sparrow (Aimophila Cassinii) Status Assessment And Conservation Plan, Janet M. Ruth
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
Cassin’s Sparrow (Aimophila cassinii) is a grassland species endemic to the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico. Its behavior and ecology have been shaped by these arid ecosystems and the health of its populations is dependent on the availability of grasslands that contain a shrub component. Populations of many grassland birds have experienced dramatic declines due to the loss and deterioration of grassland habitats, and there has been concern about the trends in Cassin’s Sparrow populations. Without better information about population trends, ecology, and effects of management activities, and without a stronger emphasis on grassland management, Cassin’s Sparrows and other grassland …

Cytokines In Mycoplasma Hyorhinis-Induced Arthritis In Pigs Bred Selectively For High And Low Immune Responses, N. R. Jayagopala Reddy, Bruce N. Wilkie, Peter Borgs, Bonnie A. Mallard
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Yorkshire pigs were bred selectively for high and low immune responses (H and L pigs, respectively) based on multiple antibody (Ab) and cell-mediated immune response traits. In a previous experiment, generation 4 (G4) pigs of each line were infected with Mycoplasma hyorhinis. High responders had a more rapid and higher Ab response and less polyserositis, but arthritis was more severe in H pigs than in L pigs. To test the hypothesis that line differences were attributable to differential expression of cytokines, M. hyorhinis infection was induced in pigs of G8. Arthritis was more severe clinically (P, ≤0.05) and postmortem …

Ecogeochemistry Of The Subsurface Food Web At Ph 0–2.5 In Iron Mountain, California, U.S.A., Eleanora I. Robbins, Teresa M. Rodgers, Charles N. Alpers, D. Kirk Nordstrom
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Pyrite oxidation in the underground mining environment of Iron Mountain, California, has created the most acidic pH values ever reported in aquatic systems. Sulfate values as high as 120 000 mg 1-1 and iron as high as 27600mg 1-1 have been measured in the mine water, which also carries abundant other dissolved metals including Al, Zn, Cu, Cd, Mn, Sb and Pb. Extreme acidity and high metal concentrations apparently do not preclude the presence of an underground acidophilic food web, which has developed with bacterial biomass at the base and heliozoans as top predators. Slimes, oil-like films, flexible …

Tsc3p Is An 80-Amino Acid Protein Associated With Serine Palmitoyltransferase And Required For Optimal Enzyme Activity, Ken Gable, Harry Slife, Dagmar Bacikova, Erin Monaghan, Teresa M. Dunn
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
Serine palmitoyltransferase catalyzes the first step of sphingolipid synthesis, condensation of serine and palmitoyl CoA to form the long chain base 3-ketosphinganine. The LCB1/TSC2 and LCB2/TSC1 genes encode homologous proteins of the a-oxoamine synthase family required for serine palmitoyltransferase activity. The other a-oxoamine synthases are soluble homodimers, but serine palmitoyltransferase is a membrane-associated enzyme composed of at least two subunits, Lcb1p and Lcb2p. Here, we report the characterization of a third gene, TSC3, required for optimal 3-ketosphinganine synthesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. S. cerevisiae cells lacking the TSC3 gene have a temperature-sensitive lethal phenotype that is reversed by supplying …

Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In Beef Cattle Presented For Slaughter In The U.S.: Higher Prevalence Rates Than Previously Estimated, Lisa J. Gansheroff, Alison D. O'Brien
Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
Before 1982, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had identified only one Escherichia coli isolate of the O157:H7 serotype; it had been isolated from a patient with bloody diarrhea. Then, in 1982, two outbreaks of severe bloody diarrhea occurred among people who had eaten hamburgers at a fast food chain. The CDC isolated E. coli O157:H7 from people who had become ill as well as from a hamburger patty. In 1983, Karmali et al. discovered an association between infection with E. coli that produce Shiga toxin (then called Vero toxin), including O157:H7 strains, and another severe and sometimes …
