The role of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the developing neocortex was reexamined by comparing its expression in rats, mice and guinea pigs, following the protocol for acetylcholinesterase histochemistry (described in Sendemir et al., 1996) in order to determine the suitability of the breeding colony at UludaÛ University for use as an animal model. Pineal-gland-derived melatonin (N- Acetyl 5-Methoxytryptamine), which is a known antioxidant hormone, is known to have inhibitory effects on cell growth and proliferation. Ethanol causes increases in lipid peroxidation, superoxide formation and collagen synthesis resulting in fibrosis in the liver due to alcohol intake. MUC2 is a well-identified intestinal mucin, present predominantly in the small intestine and colon. It is known that pathological alterations in the expression and composition of this mucin occur in several serious diseases related to epithelial surfaces, e.g., carcinoma and colitis ulcerosa. This study was designed in order to evaluate the relationship of MRSA isolates obtained from an intensive care unit (ICU) and other wards as well as the epidemiological features and typing methods. Two polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic methods of typing MRSA isolates-sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS- PAGE) and native-PAGE (N-PAGE) were evaluated and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns were determined. Since frequent and serious infections occur in diabetic patients, the investigation of the function of neutrophils is of importance. Any change in the lipid composition of the plasma membrane could be one of the causes of these infections. This study was carried out in order to determine the effects of levonorgestrel (LNG) and progestin derivatives, alone and in combination with melatonin (MEL), on the plasma oxidant-antioxidant system, and also lipid and lipoprotein levels, in the rat model. Control radiation dose-response curves are necessary in evaluating the absorbed radiation dose of similar radiation quality following radiation accidents or in monitoring the health of both the public and radiation workers. Each biological dosimetry laboratory should establish its own control dose-response data. In this study our aim was to establish control curves for 200 kVp X-rays in our laboratory in order to estimate absorbed radiation doses following exposures. Objective: The aim of this study is to describe the results of acute cerebral anoxia in adults as a reversal sign. Methods: We retrospectively examined the CT and MR images of 9 patients in a vegetative state due to acute prolonged anoxia. Each of them had at least one MRI and 4 CT exams 6-12 hours, 10-14 days, 6-8 months and 1 year after the anoxic event. Patients undergoing aortocoronary bypass surgery were randomly assigned to receive cold (+10 ^oC, Group A, n: 36) or tepid (+29 ^oC, Group B, n: 47) blood cardioplegia. The preoperative ejection fraction of all the patients was under 40%. Cardioplegic solution was delivered in antegrade and retrograde fashion in both groups. The myocardial protective effects of these 2 different cardioplegic temperatures were compared in terms of the postoperative cardiac index and left ventricle stroke work index, dopamine and dobutamine requirements in the intensive care unit, intra aortic balloon pump requirement, intensive care unit stay length and mortality ratios. In this research, the effects of early weaning on the growth rate and milk production characteristics of Brown Swiss cattle in later years were investigated. The calves used in the study were weaned at 5, 7 and 9 weeks of age, and the weights obtained at 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 months of age were not significantly affected by the age of weaning. The weight gains determined between 6 and 18 months of ages with 3-month intervals were also not significantly affected by the different ages of weaning. The co-localization of the distribution of the neurokinin 1 receptor with nitric oxide was investigated in laminae I-II, III- IV, X and in the intermediolateral horn of the spinal cord in thirteen adult rats. Silver-intensified gold and standard immunocytochemical labelling or standard double immunocytochemical labelling were employed in 40µm-thick sections of the spinal cord. There were many NK1 receptor-expressing neurones in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, but none of these expressed NOS. The aim of this study was to estimate the cost of mastitis and the contribution of each cost component of mastitis to the total mastitis induced cost in herds with low and high levels of subclinical mastitis under Scottish field conditions. It was estimated that mastitis cost £140 per cow/year to the average Scottish dairy farmer in 1996. However, this figure was as low as £69 per cow/year in herds with lower levels of subclinical mastitis, and as high as £228 cow/year in herds with high sub- clinical mastitis. Protein bands of hydatid fluids of sheep liver were determined by SDS-PAGE and Western blotting, and this was followed by the determination of specific bands of hydatid cysts for sheep and humans. For diagnostic purposes, 30 positive and 20 negative sheep sera, 1 commercially obtained non-infected sheep serum, and 10 posi- tive and 10 negative human sera were used in this experiment. Effects of immersion chilling on the microbiological quality of poultry carcasses and cross contamination of Salmonella were studied. Levels of aerobic mezophilic bacteria, coliform, Escherichia coli and the incidence of Salmonella were determined prechill and postchill. The level of coliform and E. coli were reduced by immersion chilling (P0.05) but there was an increase in Salmonella incidence in carcasses exiting the immersion chiller indicating that this may be the point of most significant cross contamination in broiler processing plants. In the first step, semen samples were diluted with Tris+Citric acid+Fructose+Egg yolk and Sadium citrate+Egg yolk diluents and were frozen in liquid nitrogen vapour. In the second step, 120 Merino ewes were synchronised with sponges, which contained flourogestone acetate, for 14 days. PMSG was injected into the ewes on the withdrawal day. In this study, the heart structures of 30 English racing horses with different weights were examined by M-mode echocardiography. Horses were separated into 3 groups of 10 horses. A feeding trial was conducted to study the effects of dietary astaxanthin concentration on muscle pigmentation of rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss) with a mean initial weight of 270 g fed diets supplemented with astaxanthin in diet concentrations of 60 (group II) and 90 mg/kg (group III) for 35 days. The rainbow trout has a great production capacity in Turkey. Marinated and breaded rainbow trout was prepared and the effect of the MAP technology on the shelf-life was studied. The samples were packaged and stored in 3 groups. These were the control (air), group A (5% O_2 + 35% CO_2 + 60% N_2 ), and group B (30% CO_2 + 70% N_2 ). Multiple regression analysis was utililised to estimate the relationship between somatic cell counts (SCC) and milk yield using the data of 1687 quarter milk samples collected weekly from 20 cows at the Dairy Unit of A.U. Veterinary Faculty's Research Farm between May and October 1998. The findings of this study supported the results of similar previous studies on that there is a negative relationship between SCC and milk yield, the relationship between milk yield and lnSCC (natural logarithmic form) is not linear. Tilapia zilli were exposed to the same concentration (1 mg/L) of essential (Cu, Zn) and non-essential (Cd, Pb) metals for 10 days so that these metals would accumulate in the liver, gill, brain and muscle tissues. Subsequently, the animals were transferred to uncontaminated water for a period of elimination, during which samples were taken at days 1, 7, 15 and 30. Almost half of the cultivated areas of Turkey have been found to be zinc deficient. This deficiency is even more serious in Central Anatolia, the large cereal-producing region. Zinc is an essential element for nourishing plants, and also for normal development and functioning of humans and animals. Meeting the daily zinc requirement from diet is very difficult for people whose daily energy intake is based on cereals. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Infection with HCV becomes chronic in more than 80% of cases and it accounts for 20% of all cases of acute hepatitis. The effects of cadmium nitrate on the fecundity, larval survival and sex ratio of D. melanogaster were tested. According to our findings, the effects of cadmium nitrate can be summarized as follows: it appeared that when used as a feeding substance during the developmental period, cadmium nitrate did not have any effect on fecundity. On the other hand, if cadmium nitrate was given throughout adult life it caused a proportional decrease in the daily mean with increasing concentration.
