Multi-Sensory Information And Simulator Immersion: Impact On Decision-Making Performance, Presence, And Cognitive Load, Zachariah G. Hoyne, Khaya Morris-Binelli, Sean Müller, Benjamin Piggott, Paola Chivers, Evan Dekker
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Immersive technologies such as 360-degree video virtual reality (360VR) provide unique opportunities to simulate representative environments to investigate decision-making in a safe and cost-effective manner. Inclusion of multi-sensory visual, contextual, and auditory information is important to enhance simulator psychological fidelity. Yet, the influence of increased sensory information on decision-making, presence, and cognitive load in 360VR compared to less immersive two-dimensional video simulators is unknown. This study investigated multi-sensory information, presence, and cognitive load across immersion conditions (360VR and two-dimensional video) in an exemplar sport-specific decision-making task. Fifteen higher-skilled and 15 lesser-skilled Australian Rules Football players completed a decision-making task which …

Occupational Therapy Intervention For Children With Developmental Coordination Disorder: A Survey Of Occupational Therapists In Australia, Jacqui Hunt, Jill G. Zwicker, Annette Raynor, Erin Godecke
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Introduction: Developmental coordination disorder (DCD), a common neurodevelopmental condition, is associated with persistent motor and psychosocial difficulties impacting participation and quality of life. International guidelines recommend activity-/participation-focused, task-specific interventions; however, little is known about how Australian occupational therapists translate these recommendations into clinical practice. This study aimed to describe current Australian occupational therapy intervention for children with (or suspected to have) DCD and identify factors that shape occupational therapists' intervention choices. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was distributed to Australian occupational therapists via professional organisations/social media September–October 2020. Eligible participants were registered occupational therapists with ≥15% children in their caseload. …

Background: Osteosarcopenia—the coexistence of osteopenia/osteoporosis and sarcopenia—is associated with numerous adverse health outcomes, but its association with intrinsic capacity (IC) remains unknown. We aimed to explore the associations of osteosarcopenia with IC and all-cause mortality in older adults. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of IC and a prospective analysis of all-cause mortality in 1142 participants from the Toledo Study for Healthy Aging (75.1 ± 6.0 years, 53.1% women). Participants were classified as having no musculoskeletal disorders, osteopenia/osteoporosis, sarcopenia, or osteosarcopenia (DXA- and EWGSOP2-based criteria). IC was operationalized as a composite score integrating locomotion, cognition, psychological, vitality, and sensory domains. …

The Effects Of Carbon-Fiber Plates And Peba-Based Midsole Foam In Running Shoes On Lower-Limb Joint Kinetics And Kinematics In Recreational Female Runners, Jordan M. Allen
Master's Theses
The recent increase in long-distance running participation and the rapid advancement in footwear technology have created a need for research on injury prevention in this growing population of recreational runners. When “super shoes” were first introduced to the running scene, they caught the attention of runners worldwide with the rapid improvement in marathon performance [1]. Today, every major running brand offers its own version of a super shoe, each incorporating a carbon-fiber plate and PEBA-based midsole foam. While previous studies have shown the performance benefits of these shoes, a gap remains in the literature regarding how they impact knee, hip, …
Understanding Victim Experiences Within The Criminal Justice System, Carmen Hardin, Caron Lott
Understanding Victim Experiences Within The Criminal Justice System, Carmen Hardin, Caron Lott
Journal of Criminal Justice and Law
This study explores crime victims’ perceptions of participation in criminal justice proceedings. In all, eight (8) interviews and 314 surveys of crime victims were conducted in Arkansas. Among crime victims, 92% reported the crime to the police, 76% felt the case’s outcome served justice, 78% would be okay attending court again, 45% felt very safe in court, and 38% strongly agreed that their needs and wishes were considered in court. Three main themes emerged from the interviews: 1) impact of crime victimization on individual needs, 2) perceived access to mental and physical well-being support, and 3) perceptions of crime victims …

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
Project Background
For over a decade, communities in the Portland metro area have been struggling under a mounting housing affordability crisis. These trends particularly affect Black, Indigenous, and other people of color as well as immigrants, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities. Given these mounting challenges, the region has turned to Oregon Metro to intervene.
Metro is currently studying land banking as a tool for implementing its Regional Housing Coordination Strategy and promoting affordable housing development in the Portland metro region. While they have acquired numerous sites that have been successfully developed into affordable housing, they are looking to improve …

Background. Safety supports psychological wellbeing and potentially shapes brain aging yet existing scales overlook cumulative lifespan safety experiences.
Methods. To address this gap, we developed and validated the Lifetime Sense of Safety (LSS) scale in Kenyan adults. The LSS uses visual analog scaling with a red-to-green color gradient to retrospectively rate felt safety across life stages and settings. We evaluated scale psychometrics and associations with social determinants of health and indicators of brain health.
Results. The LSS shows adequate internal consistency and test-retest reliability, with two distinct but correlated factors representing childhood and adulthood safety. Women and …

Underdiagnosis of cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs) may represent an unrecognised biological pathway contributing to dementia risk; yet remains poorly characterised in African and African diaspora populations. We quantified the prevalence and determinants of underdiagnosed hypertension and abnormal glycaemia across four cohorts comprising up to 7000 adults aged ≥40 years from Nigeria, Kenya, and The United States: Indianapolis, and North Texas. Underdiagnosis was defined as absence of self-reported diagnosis despite elevated systolic blood pressure ( ≥130 mmHg) or fasting blood glucose ( ≥100 mg/dL). Cohort-stratified analyses examined demographic, socioeconomic, cognitive, Alzheimer’s genetic, and blood-based biomarker correlates. Underdiagnosis was pervasive in African …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Background: There is increasing interest in dietary patterns that support both human and planetary health. Plant-forward dietary patterns commonly promoted within sustainability frameworks frequently include nuts. Despite concerns regarding resource use, particularly water demands, nuts may contribute to improved diet quality and sustainable dietary behaviors.
Objectives: To examine whether diets characterized by higher nut intake are associated with dietary quality, adherence to sustainable dietary patterns, and food-related sustainability behaviors among free-living adults.
Methods: Cross-sectional analyses were conducted using data from an online validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire integrated with sustainability-related survey items. Energy-adjusted nut intake was categorized …

Striveforpride: Online Program To Promote Sexual And Gender Minority Well-Being, Shayna R. Greenberg
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Sexual and gender minority (SGM) young adults are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and stress relative to non-SGM peers. Digitally-administered mental health interventions show potential for reducing mental health distress in the general population. However, limited reporting of SGM demographics and adherence to online interventions constrain uptake and effectiveness. The present study explored the effect of an existing evidence-informed, self-guided, online-based mental health intervention, StriveWeekly, on internalizing symptoms among SGM university students. The sample consisted of 160 SGM university students, identifying as female, women, or feminine (63.1%), bisexual (36.10%), and Non-Hispanic (77.5%). Cluster randomization was employed on the basis …
Characterization Of Gata3 Mutant T47d Breast Cancer Spheroid Development, Viability, And Drug Response, Paige Bonnet
Characterization Of Gata3 Mutant T47d Breast Cancer Spheroid Development, Viability, And Drug Response, Paige Bonnet
Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Showcase
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, with luminal subtypes representing the majority of cases. Among these, 10–15% contain mutations in the transcription factor GATA3, including the P409fs frameshift mutation that produces an extended, dysregulated protein. Because traditional 2D culture systems fail to replicate the structural and biochemical complexity of in‑vivo tumors, this study employed 3D spheroid models to investigate how the P409fs mutation influences T47D breast cancer cell morphology, growth, and drug response. Control and P409fs T47D cells were aggregated using U‑bottom plates and microwell platforms to generate spheroids of defined size. Spheroid circularity, diameter, and …
