Remote Episodic Memory Deficits In Patients With Unilateral Temporal Lobe Epilepsy And Excisions, Indre Viskontas, M. P. Mcandrews, M. Moscovitch Jan 2000

Remote Episodic Memory Deficits In Patients With Unilateral Temporal Lobe Epilepsy And Excisions, Indre Viskontas, M. P. Mcandrews, M. Moscovitch

Psychology

The nature of remote memory impairment in patients with medial temporal lobe damage is the subject of some debate. While some investigators have found that retrograde amnesia in such patients is temporally graded, with relative sparing of remote memories (Squire and Alvarez, 1995), others contend that impairment is of very long duration and that remote memories are not necessarily spared (Sanders and Warrington, 1971; Nadel and Moscovitch, 1997). In this study, remote memory was assessed in 25 patients with unilateral temporal lobe epilepsy and 22 non-neurologically impaired controls using the Autobiographical Memory Interview (Kopelman et al., 1989). Results indicate that …

Evolution Of Female Mate Choice Based On Male Age: Are Older Males Better Mates?, Christopher Beck, Larkin A. Powell Jan 2000

Evolution Of Female Mate Choice Based On Male Age: Are Older Males Better Mates?, Christopher Beck, Larkin A. Powell

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Many empirical studies suggest that females often prefer to mate with older males. It is generally assumed that females prefer older males because older males are of higher genetic quality. We used a viability-based simulation model to determine whether female preference for older mates is more likely to evolve than female preference for younger mates when males provide only sperm to females. The results of our simulations suggest that female preference for young and intermediate age mates is more likely to evolve than a strong preference for older mates, and that female preference based on male age will not evolve …

Breeding Season Demography And Movements Of Eastern Towhees At The Savannah River Site, South Carolina, David G. Krementz, Larkin A. Powell Jan 2000

Breeding Season Demography And Movements Of Eastern Towhees At The Savannah River Site, South Carolina, David G. Krementz, Larkin A. Powell

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The Eastern Towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus) has undergone population declines across much of its range, especially in New England. Despite being a widespread and, at one time, a common species, relatively little is known about its natural history, ecology, or demographics. We conducted baseline research on Eastern Towhees at the Savannah River Site, South Carolina, in 1995 and 1996 to estimate breeding season survival rates, nest success rates, breeding densities, and daily movements. We also were interested in whether towhees had differences in survival and movement rates between young and mature managed pine stands. We found that survival rates during the …

The Invisible Web: Navigating The Web Outside Traditional Search Engines, Karen R. Diaz

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

You've heard the pitch about how big the Web is—some 380 million pages and counting. But did you know that there is a virtual treasure trove of information that is not visible through the traditional search engines? Did you know that there are thousands of searchable databases, archives, and other information sources delivering highly targeted information for a much improved searching experience?—The Invisible Web Catalog on the Lycos Network Search engines Find Web sites, Web pages, and in some cases, specified types of documents. Some provide more comprehensive results while others provide more precise results. However, what most search engines …

States, Provinces, And Cross-Border International Trade, Matthew Schaefer Jan 2000

States, Provinces, And Cross-Border International Trade, Matthew Schaefer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

When I visited here in 1997, I talked about the need to bind sub-federal actors like states and provinces to international obligations.1 States and provinces are large economic actors. If you took a list of the largest nations and then compared state and provincial Gross National Products (GNPs) with those, you would find that there were more than thirty states that would rank in the top fifty nations in terms of GNP. You will probably find at least two, three, or four provinces that would rank in the top fifty as well. So it is clear for economic welfare reasons …

Multiple Personality Disorder, Accountable Agency, And Criminal Acts, Robert F. Schopp Jan 2000

Multiple Personality Disorder, Accountable Agency, And Criminal Acts, Robert F. Schopp

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

Smedley Wormwood is an accountant who is indicted for embezzling funds from the company for which he works. He generally presents an impression of an unobtrusive, conventional, compliant, "vanilla" individual. When his lawyer interviews him about the charges, Smedley seems innocent, frightened, and bewildered. In discussing the details of events around the time of the alleged crime, Smedley becomes somewhat vague and then admits to some lapses in recall. Smedley then startles the lawyer by apparently undergoing a marked change in attitude, tone of voice, and apparent self-identity. The lawyer realizes that she is now discussing the crime with a …

Cyanonews (Vol. 15, No. 1, July 2000), Jeff Elhai

CyanoNews

CyanoNews was a newsletter that served the cyanobacteriological community from 1985 to 2003, with content provided by readers (sort of a blog before there were blogs). The newsletter reported new findings from the lab, summaries of recent meetings (often provided by graduate students and post-docs entering the field), positions sought or available, life transitions, a compendium of recent cyanobacteria-related articles, and other items of interest to those who study cyanobacteria.
