Orthos Logos, Recta Ratio: Pope John Paul Ii, Nihilism, And Postmodern Philosophy, Michael Peters Jan 2000

Orthos Logos, Recta Ratio: Pope John Paul Ii, Nihilism, And Postmodern Philosophy, Michael Peters

Journal for Christian Theological Research

Pope John Paul II's encyclical letter, Fides et Ratio, delivered in Rome at Saint Peter's, on 14 September 1998, is the first encyclical to address the relationship between faith and reason, and other matters philosophical, for over a hundred years. Pope John Paul II suggests that, in the history of philosophy, postmodernism appears as a form of nihilism, resulting from the crisis of rationalism. He argues for a new dialogue between theology and philosophy to recover authentic wisdom and truth. This article reviews and discusses the argument of the letter, briefly sketching the Pope's argument concerning the relationship of the …

Knowledge, Consumption, And Endogenous Growth, Richard N. Langlois Jan 2000

Knowledge, Consumption, And Endogenous Growth, Richard N. Langlois

Economics Working Papers

The recent efflorescence of interest in "endogenous" theories of economic growth has focused attention on the nature and role of knowledge in the growth process (Romer 1986, 1990; Grossman and Helpman 1990, 1994). Unlike earlier models of growth (Solow 1956; Swan 1956) in which technological change appeared as an exogenous parameter, this New Growth Theory (NGT) has sought to "endogenize" technical change by folding its production more fully into the neoclassical positive heuristic. Knowledge no longer appears as manna from heaven, but is now produced just as are bananas and tires: as the result of the rational optimizing behavior of …

Colby College Watershed Study: Other Area Studies

The Colby Environmental Assessment Team (CEAT) engaged in an extensive data collection and analysis effort from September to December of 2000 to produce a comprehensive evaluation of the ecological health of the Lake Wesserunsett ecosystem. Lake water quality was the primary focus of the study due to its predictive value regarding overall watershed function and viability. The accumulation of nutrients in a lake due to surface runoff and erosion …
