Treatment Outcome In Tension Headache: Disregulation As A Potential Mechanism., Paul Allen Davis
Treatment Outcome In Tension Headache: Disregulation As A Potential Mechanism., Paul Allen Davis
Theses and Dissertations
Although considerable research has demonstrated that progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) is an effective treatment for tension-type headache, the mechanism responsible for its effectiveness has not been determined. Recent findings regarding physiological disregulation and its impact on headache indicate a possible mechanism for the effectiveness of PMR. Physiological disregulation occurs when physiological responses are not appropriately monitored, or when they are monitored correctly but adjustments are not made in an appropriate manner. It is suggested that this disregulation can disrupt homeostasis which then leads to tension-type headache. Because PMR enhances a person's ability to monitor his/her physiology and make necessary adjustments, …

Characteristics Of Nursing Doctoral Programs In The United States, Melanie Mcewen, Gregory A. Bechtel
Characteristics Of Nursing Doctoral Programs In The United States, Melanie Mcewen, Gregory A. Bechtel
Nursing Faculty Publications
The expansive growth of doctoral programs in the United States has necessitated a need to determine demographic attributes of the academic program, characteristics of the students, admission criteria, and curriculum patterns. Seventy-eight doctoral programs were sent a researcher-designed survey and 48 (62 per cent) responded. Results show an increasing shift away from clinical doctorates to the research doctorate, although few differences exist within the research focus of doctoral nursing programs. Consistent with previous reports in the literature, curricula are fairly standard and few differences were noted based on a number of criteria including geographic location, type of degree granted, Carnegie …

Using Expert Systems For Simulation Modeling Of Patient Scheduling, Charles R. Standridge, Duane Steward
Using Expert Systems For Simulation Modeling Of Patient Scheduling, Charles R. Standridge, Duane Steward
Peer Reviewed Articles
Modeling the scheduling of patient appointments is an important issue in simulating a health care delivery facility. A simulation model must include the control logic of appointment scheduling software and the explicit and implicit decision rules used by the human scheduler in selecting an appointment time. Expert systems provide one way of modeling such control logic and decision rules. We describe a structure for an expert system that models patient appointment scheduling and the integration of such an expert system within a simulation model. An example expert system for a small animal veterinary clinic is presented.
Mechanisms Of Calcium Buffering And Aging In Neurons: Testing The Limits Of Homeostasis, William James Pottorf Ii
Mechanisms Of Calcium Buffering And Aging In Neurons: Testing The Limits Of Homeostasis, William James Pottorf Ii
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) is an ubiquitous second messenger that integrates multiple and diverse neuronal pathways that include development and maturation, gene expression, synaptic plasticity, transmitter release, excitability, and even cell death. Upon neuronal excitation the [Ca2+]i increases rapidly and the calcium buffering system reacts quickly to restore [Ca2+]i to basal levels in order to reset the cell for the next stimulus and avoid prolonged exposure to cytotoxic levels of high [Ca2+]i. The aging process appears to causes multiple changes in the ability of neurons to regulate [Ca2+]i homeostasis and an …

Grandma's Babies: The Problem Of Welfare Eligibility For Children Raised By Relatives, Rebecca L. Hegar, Maria Scannapieco
Grandma's Babies: The Problem Of Welfare Eligibility For Children Raised By Relatives, Rebecca L. Hegar, Maria Scannapieco
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This article provides a brief history of children raised by relatives and examines the welfare eligibility of these families, emphasizing changes under the Personal Responsibility & Work Opportunity Act of 1996 (PR&WOA). The revolution in public welfare places many care-giving relatives atfinancial risk. Depending on their states' plans for implementing the PR& WOA, children and their relative caregivers may lose state support. The article presents the social welfare policy responses of a number of states to the problems of kinship care-giving, formal kinship foster care, the PR&WOA, and other social welfare provisions. Unintended consequences of welfare reform are highlighted.

UniverCity News, 1998-2001
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Method For Modulating Eicosanoid Mediated Immune Responses In Arthropods, David W. Stanley
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The invention is directed to compositions which alter the health of invertebrate organisms by affecting eicosanoid mediated immune responses, and methods of using the compositions. The invention provides pharmaceutical com positions and biopesticide compositions. The pharmaceuti cal composition is composed of an effective amount of at least one biologically active agent which enhances or inhib its eicosanoid-mediated immune responses in invertebrate Species and a physiological compatible carrier. The biope Sticide composition is composed of a biopesticidal amount of an inhibitor of eicosanoid-mediated immune responses in invertebrates and a physiologically acceptable carrier. The pharmaceutical compositions are useful to treat invertebrate Species …
