Older Citizens And The Plan-Making Process: Are Planners Being Neglectful?, Denise A. Boswell Jan 2000

Older Citizens And The Plan-Making Process: Are Planners Being Neglectful?, Denise A. Boswell

College of Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA) Working Papers, 1991-2000

Building codes and code enforcement have been criticized by governmental commissions and academic experts for unnecessarily increasing the costs of new construction in central cities, thereby reducing the ability of builders and developers to provide affordable housing and compete successfully with suburban areas. In this paper, we examine empirically the effects of the stringency of code enforcement on central city housing construction. We show that the code enforcement choices central cities make can limit their ability to compete with suburban areas for new single-family-detached and multi-family housing. We also show that minor changes in strategy will not alter this effect. …

Oxidative Stress Resistance: A Robust Correlated Response To Selection In Extended Longevity Lines Of Drosophila Melanogaster?, Lawrence G. Harshman, Beth A. Haberer Jan 2000

Oxidative Stress Resistance: A Robust Correlated Response To Selection In Extended Longevity Lines Of Drosophila Melanogaster?, Lawrence G. Harshman, Beth A. Haberer

Lawrence G. Harshman Publications

Stress resistance is associated with longevity in Drosophila melanogaster and other model organisms used for genetic research. The present study tests for oxidative stress resistance in one set of lines selected for late-life reproduction and extended longevity. Both females and males from the selected lines were appreciably more resistant to oxidative stress than were flies from the control lines. A relative increase in oxidative stress resistance is a correlated response to selection in this laboratory selection experiment. Increased oxidative stress resistance appears to be a relatively robust correlated response to laboratory selection for late-life reproduction and extended longevity.

Accessibility To Long-Term Care: A Comparison Of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada And Clark County, Nevada, Schuyler Van Rensselaer Quick

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

There has been extensive debate in this country on the ability of the health care system to adequately distribute Long Term Care (LTC) to the elderly. Three perspectives have emerged to explain current problems in access to LTC by the elderly indigent: The Market Model Perspective, Weber's Bureaucratic Perspective, and the Neo-Marxist Perspective. This study will assess these three theories, by examining constraints to accessibility within two systems, Canada and the United States. The LTC delivery service systems of the Fredericton region of New Brunswick and Clark County, Nevada, were examined in the summer and fall of 1992, to ascertain …

Factors That Influence Why Elderly Receive Influenza Immunizations, Lynn Marie Ferebee Jan 2000

Factors That Influence Why Elderly Receive Influenza Immunizations, Lynn Marie Ferebee

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine what variables influence elderly persons to obtain the recommended annual influenza immunization. The Health Belief Model provided the hypotheses that were tested in the comparative descriptive design study. The convenience sample (N = 339) consisted of two groups: those who received the influenza vaccination (n = 267) and those who did not receive the vaccination (n = 72). The questionnaire was designed from the Health Belief Model for influenza immunization. The five predictor variables: susceptibility, perceived severity and threat, perceived benefits and barriers, were significantly related to the outcome of receiving influenza …

Assessment Of Predictors Of Health Behaviors Of Elders In Frontier Nevada, Pauline Bradshaw

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to investigate health-promoting lifestyle practices and correlate these to self identified factors that may limit health promotion activity of frontier rural elders living in Nevada. Pender's Health Promotion Model provided the theoretical framework for this study. The sample included 114 participants that were aged 65 and older from locations in Nevada counties that qualify as frontier (population less than 6/square mile). Participants completed a two part self-administered questionnaire, the Health-Promotion Lifestyle Profile II (HPLP II) and the revised Elderly Health Care Needs Questionnaire (EHCNQ). Findings support the research hypothesis that cognitive-perceptual and …

The Insolvent Life Care Provider: Who Leads The Dance Between The Federal Bankruptcy Code And State Continuing-Care Statutes, Nathalie Martin Jan 2000

The Insolvent Life Care Provider: Who Leads The Dance Between The Federal Bankruptcy Code And State Continuing-Care Statutes, Nathalie Martin

Faculty Scholarship

Continuing-care retirement communities provide seniors with an attractive option to traditionaln ursing homes. These arrangementsa llow seniors to live in a pleasant, independent environment for as long as possible, and then receive life time nursing care when it is needed. Residents of these communities pay a large upfront entry fee in exchange for the promise of life time nursing care. When continuing care facilities file for bankruptcy, however, residents risk losing their large upfront entry fee, which drastically reduces the value of these arrangements to consumers. In this Article, Professor Nathalie Martin analyses these risks against a host of state …

Integration As Service: Implications Of Faith-Praxis Integration For Training, Sally Schwer Canning, Carlos F. Pozzi, J. Derek Mcneil

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Faith-praxis integration should be given further attention as the integration of applied psychology and Christian theology proceeds. The authors outline a rationale for faith-praxis integration based upon patterns of mental health needs and resources in the U.S. and for a Kingdom mandate. Implications of a faith-praxis perspective for trainers of Christian psychologists are suggested in relation to a program’s missions statement, faculty, course work, practical training, research, and relationship to the community. Selected activities of existing Christian psychology training programs are included to illustrate these implications. Ongoing discussion is invited concerning this emerging area of integration.

A Note On The Representation Of Environmental Risks In The News, Demond Shondell Miller Jan 2000

A Note On The Representation Of Environmental Risks In The News, Demond Shondell Miller

The Qualitative Report

This paper examines the role of the media in representing environmental risks to society, focusing on how environmental realities are constructed via the objectivist and subjective perspectives. This study explores the construction of reality centered on space exploration, namely, the Cassini space probe. In this study, 200 respondents were asked to read four news articles from various sources and comment on the information contained in the articles. Their comments addressed the extent to which the articles were useful in helping them assess their risk to potential plutonium exposure in the event of a launch disaster. A large majority of the …

The elderly gentleman and his deceased wife were told this would eliminate the expensive legal nightmare of probate. Unfortunately, like many others, this couple was victimized by a trust mill.

Cytotoxic T Cell Response To Influenza Vaccination In Older Adults, Caroline R. Letter Jan 2000

Cytotoxic T Cell Response To Influenza Vaccination In Older Adults, Caroline R. Letter

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Influenza infections result in activation of cellular and humoral immune responses, leading to stimulation of cytotoxic T cells (CTL) and helper T cells with subsequent viral clearance.

By using an assay of granzyme B activity, the in vivo cellular-mediated immune response of old adults was found to be significantly decreased in comparison to young adults. The effect of aging on the CTL response was further investigated via enzyme-linked immunospot technique. A significant increase in number of virus-specific T cells occurred in older adults after vaccination, although the magnitude of the CTL response decreased in comparison to young adults. These data …

A Content Analysis Of Advertising In Magazines Directed At United States And United Kingdom Seniors, Ray Markham Smith Jan 2000

A Content Analysis Of Advertising In Magazines Directed At United States And United Kingdom Seniors, Ray Markham Smith

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The seniors (55+) market is a growing, attractive market. While this market represents almost one-fourth of the total population in the United States and is slightly higher in the United Kingdom today, this segment is projected to grow to approximately one-third of the population over the next quarter century.

Relative to their proportion of the total population, seniors, and especially women, have historically been underrepresented as general advertising models. When seniors are portrayed, they are often used in supporting roles or in a negatively stereotyped manner. While the aging process is associated with declines in mental and physical capabilities, and …

Predicting Turnover And Retention In Nursing Home Administrators: Management And Policy Implications, Douglas A. Singh, Robert C. Schwab Jan 2000

Predicting Turnover And Retention In Nursing Home Administrators: Management And Policy Implications, Douglas A. Singh, Robert C. Schwab

Faculty Publications

Administrator turnover and its impact on the quality of patient care are important concerns in the nursing home industry. This study evaluates a model to determine which factors, attitudes, and personal characteristics can predict tenure. Responses to a survey from 290 nursing home administrators (NHAs) who furnished data on their previous positions were analyzed using logistic regression methods. The extracted model correlates tenure with the administrator's past patterns of stability, community attachment, organizational commitment, and facility performance. The model is particularly effective (85% accuracy) in flagging NHAs who are likely to depart within their first 3 years of employment. Implications …

Perceived Social Support Of Family Members Of Aged Care Facility Residents And Its Relationship With Family Members Well-Being And Their Support Of Relatives In Residential Care, Christine Toye

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

When elderly people are cared for In Aged Care Facilities (ACFs) it is known that their family members frequently suffer negative effects. These effects may be alleviated by social support and, because they feel better, family members may then offer more support to residents. In this study, the researcher tested a model with a sample of 213 family members of ACF residents. Predictive relationships were hypothesised among incentives for family members to support residents, stress related factors, the perceived formal and Informal support of family members, their psychological wellbeing, and the support they offered to residents. The researcher also developed …

How General Practitioners And Aged Care Workers Perceive Incidences Of Elder Abuse, Paul Howrie Jan 2000

How General Practitioners And Aged Care Workers Perceive Incidences Of Elder Abuse, Paul Howrie

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

As the Australian population is expanding and ageing, there is an associated need for a focus to be placed on the Individual rights of elderly people, and for the general populus to be made more aware of areas related to our older generation. Elder abuse, as an area of concern, developed as an offshoot of investigations into child abuse and general domestic violence, and initially surfaced in the 1970s and 80s. Some sections of the medical profession were made specifically aware of the problem initially in 1975, through a letter that was sent to the British Medical Journal. However, throughout …
