Synchrotron X-ray microtomography shows vesicular structures for toluene/cement mixtures, prepared with 1.22-3.58 wt % toluene. Three-dimensional imaging of the cured samples shows spherical vesicles, with diameters ranging from 20 to 250/μm; a search with EPMA for vesicles in the range of 1-20/μm proved negative. However, the total vesicle volume, as computed from the microtomography images, accounts for less than 10% of initial toluene. Since the cements were cured in sealed bottles, the larger portion of toluene must be dispersed within the cement matrix. Evidence for toluene in the cement matrix comes from 29Si MAS NMR spectroscopy, which shows a reduction …

Implementation Of The Tennessee Divorce And Mediation Pilot Project In Hamilton County: Evaluating Program Effectiveness, Mary Kathryn Robertson
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
As more time and money are invested in training programs, the sponsors of these programs, whether those are corporations, or government agencies, want to know if the training is worth the investment. An evaluation of the training and its effects is needed to answer the questions about the usefulness, and utility of the training program. Training is typically assessed using some combination of the criteria presented in Kirkpatrick's hierarchical model (Noe & Schmitt, 1986). The four levels of evaluation in the hierarchy include reactions, learning, behavior and results. Kirkpatrick's hierarchical model has been used to devise an evaluation system for …

Mechanical Property Characterization Of Recycled Thermoplastics, Johnny Edward Bargo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Reuse of engineering thermoplastics retrieved from discarded computers, monitors and printers called as electronic shredder residue is described in the following thesis. Virgin, blend of virgin and recycled, and 100% recycled polymers such as acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polycarbonate (PC) are characterized for mechanical properties as part of this research. This research consists of characterization of mechanical properties such as tension, bending, compression, impact, hardness, and creep of ABS and PC plastics.;Long-term mechanical property retention and environmental durability are very important for infrastructure and automotive applications. The resins alone do not have the strength or stiffness to meet the …

Assessment Of A Space Shuttle Trajectory Evaluation System (Dolilu Ii), Diwakar Chakravarthy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
DOLILU II is a ground control system that generates space shuttle's launch trajectories, first stage guidance commands and verifies whether the generated trajectories are safe for the flight. It is a safety critical system and a high degree of confidence in its safety and reliability must be gained through assessment. We addressed three issues related to its safety and reliability assessment. We developed a reliability assessment framework for DOLILU II system. We proposed techniques to speed up test case execution and designed methodologies for the generation of input conditions needed to test the system.;We used a Bayesian statistical framework for …
Gmm Estimation Of Autoregressive Roots Near Unity With Panel Data, Hyungsik Roger Moon, Peter C.B. Phillips
Gmm Estimation Of Autoregressive Roots Near Unity With Panel Data, Hyungsik Roger Moon, Peter C.B. Phillips
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper investigates a generalized method of moments (GMM) approach to the estimation of autoregressive roots near unity with panel data. The two moment conditions studied are obtained by constructing bias corrections to the score functions under OLS and GLS detrending, respectively. It is shown that the moment condition under GLS detrending corresponds to taking the projected score on the Bhattacharya basis, linking the approach to recent work on projected score methods for models with infinite numbers of nuisance parameters (Waterman and Lindsay, 1998). Assuming that the localizing parameter makes a nonpositive value, we establish consistency of the GMM estimator …

Reducing Mass Degeneracy In Sar By Ms By Stable Isotopic Labeling, Chris Bailey-Kellogg, John J. Kelley Iii, Cliff Stein, Bruce Randall Donald
Dartmouth Scholarship
Mass spectrometry (MS) promises to be an invaluable tool for functional genomics, by supporting low-cost, high-throughput experiments. However, large-scale MS faces the potential problem of mass degeneracy -- indistinguishable masses for multiple biopolymer fragments (e.g. from a limited proteolytic digest). This paper studies the tasks of planning and interpreting MS experiments that use selective isotopic labeling, thereby substantially reducing potential mass degeneracy. Our algorithms support an experimental-computational protocol called Structure-Activity Relation by Mass Spectrometry (SAR by MS), for elucidating the function of protein-DNA and protein-protein complexes. SAR by MS enzymatically cleaves a crosslinked complex and analyzes the resulting mass spectrum …

Pseudomonas syringae is a member of an important group of Gram-negative bacterial pathogens of plants and animals that depend on a type III secretion system to inject virulence effector proteins into host cells. In P. syringae, hrpyhrc genes encode the Hrp (type III secretion) system, and avirulence (avr) and Hrpdependent outer protein (hop) genes encode effector proteins. The hrpyhrc genes of P. syringae pv syringae 61, P. syringae pv syringae B728a, and P. syringae pv tomato DC3000 are flanked by an exchangeable effector locus and …

A Meta-Analysis On Relationship Modeling Accuracy: Comparing Relational And Semantic Models, Qing Cao, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Keng Siau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Semantic data modeling, such as entity-relationship (ER) modeling and extended/enhanced entity-relationship (EER) modeling, has emerged as an alternative to relational data modeling. The majority of research in data modeling suggests that the use of semantic data models leads to better performance. However the findings are not conclusive and sometimes inconsistent. In this research, we investigate modeling relationship correctness in relational and semantic models. The meta-analysis carried out in this research is an attempt to alleviate inconsistent results in previous studies.

We studied the stability of changes in motor performance associated with adaptation to a novel dynamic environment during goal-directed movements of the dominant arm. Eleven normal, human subjects made targeted reaching movements in the horizontal plane while holding the handle of a two-joint robotic manipulator. This robot was programmed to generate a novel viscous force field that perturbed the limb perpendicular to the desired direction of movement. Following adaptation to this force field, we sought to determine the relative role of kinematic errors and dynamic criteria in promoting recovery from the adapted state. In particular, we compared kinematic and dynamic …

Theoretical Prediction Of Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Spectra Of Aluminum, Bromine And Nitrogen Compounds Via First Principles Calculations, Chris Harwell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
We study the interaction of the electric field gradient (EFG) and the nuclear quadrupole moment of 81Br,27Al, and 14N nuclei via ab initio quantum chemistry calculations. The primary goal is to predict the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectral parameters of interesting materials and assist in interpretation of their spectra. The calculations predict NMR spectral parameters for:
- 27Al nuclei in andalusite, sillimanite and kyanite - three polymorphs of Al2Si05 - for assigning NMR signals to crystallographic sites, as a zeolite model and studying the effect of structural changes due to temperature (25-1000''C);
- 14N nuclei in …

Reconciling Arguments About The Self-Preserving Soul With Evolutionary Theory, James M. Donovan
Reconciling Arguments About The Self-Preserving Soul With Evolutionary Theory, James M. Donovan
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Advocates of a self-preserving soul must somehow integrate that soul with an organic body which is the product of an evolutionary history. Efforts to resolve this version of the sorites paradox (at what point in the gradual evolution of Homo sapiens was the step taken from the soul-less to the ensouled?) can result in conflict between the two theories. The position is taken here that, given the standard of Popperian verisimilitude, any such conflict signals a weakness in the soul-theory, and not in evolutionism.
Five soul-theories (those by Plato, Aristotle, William of Auvergne, Hume, and Heidegger) are evaluated on three …
A Brazilian Challenge To Lewis's Explanation Of Cult Mediumship, James M. Donovan
A Brazilian Challenge To Lewis's Explanation Of Cult Mediumship, James M. Donovan
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
Recruitment into peripheral possession trance cults has been explained as attempts to compensate for socio-economic deprivation and jural impotence. This model, best developed by I.M. Lewis, is reviewed and its predictions tested against two types of Brazilian data. Firstly, national census figures of religious affiliation are compared with measure of socio-economic stress for a diachronic analysis. A second, synchronic analysis involves 62 respondents in Rio de Janeiro who completed questionnaires on socio-economic status, cultic affiliation, and perceptions of stress and gender inequality. The results offer only weak support for Lewis's original model, which may therefore profit from supplementation from other …

Supply-Chain Synchronization: Lessons From Hyundai Motor Company, Chan K. Hahn, Edward A. Duplaga, Janet L. Hartley
Management Faculty Publications
One of the challenges of supply-chain management is developing ways to effectively integrate activities across organizations on the supply chain. Hyundai Motor Company developed mechanisms to coordinate production planning and scheduling activities among supply-chain members. Hyundai Motor's production-and-sales-control (P/SC) department uses regularly scheduled cross-functional meetings and scheduling policies to coordinate supply-chain activities. When implementing this process, the P/SC department overcame structural, environ mental, and behavioral problems. Although Hyundai manage ment concedes that the process is not perfect, communication among supply-chain members has improved, and the P/SC group has successfully promoted mutual understanding and respect among functional areas. The primary benefit, …
Importation And Deprivation Explanations Of Juveniles’ Adjustment To Correctional Facilities, Angela Gover, Doris Layton Mackenzie, Gaylene Armstrong
Importation And Deprivation Explanations Of Juveniles’ Adjustment To Correctional Facilities, Angela Gover, Doris Layton Mackenzie, Gaylene Armstrong
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Two theoretical explanations, importation and deprivation, are commonly used to explain inmate adjustment to the correctional environment. This study examined the relation- ship of selected importation and deprivation factors on juveniles’ anxiety levels while they were confined to institutions. Self-reported data collected from 3,986 juveniles and aggregate level data collected from interviews with administrators at 48 U.S. correctional facilities were used in a probit regression analysis. Importation and deprivation factors were found to have a significant impact on juveniles’ anxiety levels. Youth who were younger, White, or had a history of exposure to family violence experienced more anxiety. Youth confined …

Attitudes Of Native English-Speaking Professors Toward University Esl Students, Shirley A. Wright
Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive
This study focuses on native English-speaking business professors to explore issues of stereotyping and error gravity in terms of university ESL (English as a Second Language) students. Specifically, this dissertation has four goals: (1) to discover what types of judgments business professors make about students, (2) to determine whether they make judgments about students based on written language samples, (3) to discover whether these judgments vary according to various grammatical error types in written language samples (whether an error hierarchy obtains for written grammatical errors), and (4) to explore what linguistic variables might influence those judgments. On the basis of …

Development Of A Photoinitiator Blend For Uv Cured Inks And Coatings, Madhu Bansal
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study is to develop a new standard blend of photoinitiators, having properties of low odor, high solubility, faster curing, and being efficient for pigmented as well as for clear systems. In the process, we expect to understand the behavior of mixtures of photoinitiators and their resulting UV spectra. An important first step is to prepare different blend with different photoinitiator and characterize them on cure basis. Curing properties were studied by the KMnO4 yellow stain density test. The absorption range in the UV spectra was measured for each Photoinitiator with methanol and acrylate as background …

Emi From Airflow Aperture Arrays In Shielding Enclosures-Experiments, Fdtd, And Mom Modeling, Min Li, Joe Nuebel, James L. Drewniak, Richard E. Dubroff, Todd H. Hubing, Thomas Van Doren
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Aperture arrays designed to provide airflow through shielding enclosures can provide part of the coupling path from interior sources to external electromagnetic interference (EMI). In this work, radiation through aperture arrays is investigated numerically and experimentally. FDTD modeling is compared with measurements on aperture arrays in a test enclosure. The method of moments (MoM) is also utilized to study radiation from apertures and to investigate the mutual coupling between apertures in an infinite conducting plane. A simple design equation for the relation between aperture size and number and shielding effectiveness is proposed.

The Trade Dress Emperor's New Clothes: Why Trade Dress Does Not Belong On The Principal Register, Glynn S. Lunney Jr
Faculty Scholarship
We take it largely for granted today that the Trademark Act of 1946 permits the registration of trade dress on the principal register, but that has not always been the rule. Until 1958, the Patent and Trademark Office, following Congress's intent expressed in the Act's plain language and legislative history, excluded trade dress from the principal register as a matter of law. In 1958, Assistant Commissioner Daphne Robert Leeds changed the rule and allowed the registration of a product package as a trademark on the principal register. Unable to find any legitimate basis for reading the Trademark Act to permit …

Distributed Arithmetic Implementation Of Multivariable Controllers For Smart Structural Systems, Lingfeng Yuan, Sridhar Sana, Hardy J. Pottinger, Vittal S. Rao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Smart structural systems require the electronic control systems which are integrated into the structures to be small, lightweight and power-efficient. The field programmable gate array (FPGA) is a good platform to implement such controllers. In our previous work, FPGA-based digital controllers were built and tested on a simple structural system. In order to implement multivariable controllers, the hardware resources for FPGA-based architecture need to be further reduced. Distributed arithmetic (DA) has long been proven to be a very efficient means to mechanize computations that are dominated by inner products involving constant multiplicand. The computational requirements of the smart structural controllers …
