Building A Better Briton: Parliament's Push For State-Funded Secondary Schools, 1901-1903, Jason K. Burnett Aug 2000

Building A Better Briton: Parliament's Push For State-Funded Secondary Schools, 1901-1903, Jason K. Burnett

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The first three years of the twentieth century were a crucial time in the development of state-funded education in England. The rising tide of Germanophobia in the wake of the South African War impressed Conservative politicians with the need to improve England's educational system in order that she remain competitive in the world. With the aid of a very few Liberal imperialists, the Conservatives were able to shepherd through a series of bills which established state funded secondary schools throughout all of England, an expansion on the system created by the Education Act of 1870 in terms of both curriculum …

The Victim Rights Movement: A Social Constructionist Examination, Angela Renee Evans Aug 2000

The Victim Rights Movement: A Social Constructionist Examination, Angela Renee Evans

Dissertations

What has been termed the victim rights movement has made great progress in promoting legislative changes regarding victim rights in the United States. This research examines the victim rights movement from a social constructionist perspective by focusing on two pieces of federal legislation passed in the 1980s: the Victim and Witness Protection Act of 1982 and the Victims of Crime Act of 1984. Using the social constructionist perspective, the research examines who was involved in the claims-making activities and which claims were most likely to be heard and acted upon. Rather than seeing social movements as the result of some …

Flux Of Nutrients From Russian Rivers To The Arctic Ocean: Can We Establish A Baseline Against Which To Judge Future Changes?, R. M. Holmes, B. J. Peterson, V. V. Gordeev, A. V. Zhulidov, M. Meybeck, Richard B. Lammers, Charles J. Vorosmarty Aug 2000

Flux Of Nutrients From Russian Rivers To The Arctic Ocean: Can We Establish A Baseline Against Which To Judge Future Changes?, R. M. Holmes, B. J. Peterson, V. V. Gordeev, A. V. Zhulidov, M. Meybeck, Richard B. Lammers, Charles J. Vorosmarty

Faculty Publications

Climate models predict significant warming in the Arctic in the 21st century, which will impact the functioning of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems as well as alter land‐ocean interactions in the Arctic. Because river discharge and nutrient flux integrate large‐scale processes, they should be sensitive indicators of change, but detection of future changes requires knowledge of current conditions. Our objective in this paper is to evaluate the current state of affairs with respect to estimating nutrient flux to the Arctic Ocean from Russian rivers. To this end we provide estimates of contemporary (1970s–1990s) nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate fluxes to the Arctic …

Reputation Management: The Effect Of Ceo Behavior During A Crisis, Ellen J. Shockley Aug 2000

Reputation Management: The Effect Of Ceo Behavior During A Crisis, Ellen J. Shockley

Theses and Dissertations

This purpose of this thesis was to study how CEO behavior during a crisis impacts the organization's lasting reputation.

A thorough review of relevant publications, as well as intercept surveys, content analyses and email surveys, was conducted to test the hypotheses.

Fifty intercept surveys were conducted over two weekends to discover opinions about the issue. Respondents appearing to be age 25 or older were randomly selected. A content analysis was conducted using articles from Newsweek and The Wall Street Journal to determine the media's tone on the CEOs of Odwalla, Jack in the Box, Dow Coming and Exxon. A total …

Masses For Galactic Beat Cepheids, Noella L. D'Cruz, Siobahn M. Morgan, Erika Böhm-Vitense Aug 2000

Masses For Galactic Beat Cepheids, Noella L. D'Cruz, Siobahn M. Morgan, Erika Böhm-Vitense

Faculty Publications

Accurate mass determinations for Cepheids may be used to determine the degree of excess mixing in the interiors of their main-sequence progenitors : the larger the excess mixing, the larger the luminosity of the Cepheid of a given mass, or the smaller the mass of a Cepheid with given luminosity. Dynamical masses determined recently for a few Cepheid binaries indicate excess mixing somewhat stronger than that corresponding to the convective overshoot models by Schaller et al. Beat Cepheids can be used similarly to test main-sequence mixing in stellar interiors. The period ratios for beat Cepheids depend on luminosity, heavy element …

Crystallization And Structure Determination Of The Catalytic Trimer Of Methanococcus Jannaschii Aspartate Transcarbamoylase, Jacqueline Vitali, Tatyana Vorobyova, Gordon Websterb, Evan R. Kantrowitza Aug 2000

Crystallization And Structure Determination Of The Catalytic Trimer Of Methanococcus Jannaschii Aspartate Transcarbamoylase, Jacqueline Vitali, Tatyana Vorobyova, Gordon Websterb, Evan R. Kantrowitza

Physics Faculty Publications

Aspartate transcarbamoylase (ATCase) catalyzes the first step in the pyrimidine biosynthetic pathway, the reaction between carbamoyl phosphate and L-aspartate to form N-carbamoyl-L-aspartate and phosphate. The structural analysis of the ATCase catalytic trimer from Methanococcus jannaschii, a unicellular thermophilic archaeabacterium, has been undertaken in order to gain insight into the structural features that are responsible for the thermostability of the enzyme. As a first step, the catalytic trimer was crystallized in space group R32, with unit-cell parameters a = b = 265.3, c = 195.5 Å and two trimers in the asymmetric unit. Its structure was determined using …

Capital Punishment: A New Perspective On Race And Ethnic Differences In Punishment And Death Sentence Outcomes, Martin G. Urbina Aug 2000

Capital Punishment: A New Perspective On Race And Ethnic Differences In Punishment And Death Sentence Outcomes, Martin G. Urbina

Dissertations

A review of the existing literature on death sentence outcomes (i.e., executions, commutations) shows evidence of discrimination against minority defendants (e.g., African Americans). Prior studies, however, have followed a Caucasian/African American and/or execution/commutation approach. Latino defendants have either been excluded or treated as a monolithic group. Thus, little is known about death sentence outcomes for Latinos, whose experiences differ from those of African Americans and Caucasians. Additionally, little is known about the treatment of the various ethnic groups (e.g., Cubans, Mexicans) that constitute the Latino community. And, since the focus has been on executions and/or commutations, little is known about …

A Descriptive Study Of The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Depression By Nurse Practitioners, Polly T. Vick Aug 2000

A Descriptive Study Of The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Depression By Nurse Practitioners, Polly T. Vick

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine whether family and adult nurse practitioners were able to diagnose and treat the depressed patient in the primary care setting. The sample included 28 adult and family nurse practitioners who had been practicing as NPs for at least one year and who were currently employed in the primary care setting. The researcher used five case studies that were developed by the investigator to portray different levels of depression. The study demonstrated a fair ability to diagnose depression. but not to recognize the different levels of depression. It also demonstrated a lack of …

Characterization And Applications Of Pulsed Millisecond Glow Discharge Sources, Cris Lee Lewis Aug 2000

Characterization And Applications Of Pulsed Millisecond Glow Discharge Sources, Cris Lee Lewis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Most modern analytical techniques are derived from coupled methods involving a chromatographic separation followed by mass spectrometric detection. These techniques are employed in modern laboratories in the form of gas and liquid chromatography mass spectrometric systems. Chromatography methods separate and concentrate different chemical species based on phase partitioning. Once separated, the sample is analyzed mass spectrometrically, where further information and identification of the analyte may be deduced based on its inherent mass-to-charge ratio. However, following chemical separation and previous to any mass spectrometric detection, the analyte most be ionized. To date there are numerous possible methods for ionization, however, they …

Relationship Between Cutting Parameters And Bit Geometry In Rotary Cutting, Srikanth Addala Aug 2000

Relationship Between Cutting Parameters And Bit Geometry In Rotary Cutting, Srikanth Addala

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The main objective of this research was to investigate the relationship between cutting parameters (cutting force, penetration force, specific energy, specific respirable dust) and the bit geometry parameters (angle of the bit tip, bit tip size and shape of the bit) in order to reduce the amount of specific respirable dust generated and the specific energy consumed in rotary cutting. In the cutting process when two grooves are made in the rock at certain spacing, a land/ridge is formed between the two adjacent grooves. If that land/ridge can be removed in a cutting cycle, then a clean surface will be …
