A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Cora J. Turner

Graduate Research Papers

What is Leadership? Is leadership the use of power and authority to make decisions? Is leadership a skill learned over time to facilitate the process of change? These are questions which must be pondered. 1 Leadership is a process which involves the skill of communicating with others through teamwork to carry out a vision. Leadership is an influenced relationship between the leader and follower in pursuit of a common goal. As the mission and goals are defined, the organization has the opportunity to become efficient and effective. The leader-follower relationship is based on influence, change, mutual purpose, and commitment.

The research begins by exploring the different types of elementary and middle level foreign language programs. The research also investigates the different types of thematic units and what they should include. Finally, two units are developed for use in grades four through seven: a project-based unit built around Eric Carle's book, La Oruga Muy Hambrienta (The Very Hungry Caterpillar), and a knowledge-based unit built around classroom vocabulary. Both units include a wide variety of activities that …

Portfolios As An Alternative Assessment Strategy In Second Language Instruction, Rhonda M. Borcherding Jan 2000

Portfolios As An Alternative Assessment Strategy In Second Language Instruction, Rhonda M. Borcherding

Graduate Research Papers

With the advent of research on multiple intelligences and individual differences, alternative methods of assessing individual strengths in content areas are needed. An integral part of the process of acquiring a second language involves these alternative methods of evaluating individual strengths. Portfolio assessment offers an alternative to conventional testing strategies for evaluating progress in second language learning. Portfolios provide meaningful methods to actively engage language students in the basic four modalities of literacy: listening, reading, speaking and writing a second language. Portfolios also can help promote and document the five standards of foreign language instruction: culture, communication, connection, comparisons and …

A Literature-Based Thematic Unit For A Multi-Age Classroom : Friendship, Leslie Baxter

Graduate Research Papers

A literature-based thematic unit, friendship, has been developed for a multi-age classroom (grades three and four). This thematic unit can contribute to a major goal of a multi-age classroom: to provide students with a learning community in which they can find meaningful learning experiences, thus strengthening their personal-social and thinking-language abilities. The strands for the unit not only included friendship among peers, but also they extended the horizons of friendship to young children through mentoring, to peers at a distance through pen pals, and to the elderly through visitations to a retirement home.

In developing a print-rich learning environment for …

The Effects Of Computers And The Internet On Small Town America, Judith L. Clefisch Jan 2000

The Effects Of Computers And The Internet On Small Town America, Judith L. Clefisch

Graduate Research Papers

Computers and the Internet have changed the way small town America operates. The infusion of technology has allowed rural areas to be competitive with residents in urban areas in education, business, and personal fulfillment. Computerized systems have made the workplace more efficient and effective. The Internet connects rural areas to the rest of the country, even the world. Just because a small town atmosphere appears to be in a different era with its quiet streets and friendly people, this does not necessarily indicate that the small town has not kept up with the technology era. A small town can have …

Implementing A Reading Recovery Shared Classroom : Good First-Grade Reading Instruction For All, Bonnie L. Hoewing Jan 2000

Implementing A Reading Recovery Shared Classroom : Good First-Grade Reading Instruction For All, Bonnie L. Hoewing

Graduate Research Papers

Reading Recovery is an early intervention designed by Marie Clay (1985) to be implemented in an educational system for the purpose of providing a second chance for success for first grade children who are at risk of failing to learn to read. Reading Recovery is preventive rather than a remedial intervention. Early intervention to deal with reading difficulties is much more powerful than remediation at a later time. Good teaching of reading skills, early in a child's formal education, will help create the foundation needed for continued learning throughout their lives.

The Supreme Court Of Canada's Tax Jurisprudence: What's Wrong With The Rule Of Law, Lisa Philipps Jan 2000

The Supreme Court Of Canada's Tax Jurisprudence: What's Wrong With The Rule Of Law, Lisa Philipps

Articles & Book Chapters

This paper reviews the history of the Supreme Court's tax jurisprudence focussing on the Court's ongoing struggle to define its proper institutional role in the creation and interpretation of the tax laws. An emprical overview is first presented to document the changing nature and volume of the Court's taxation caseload through history, and this is related to the evolution of Canada's fiscal system. Selected judgments from differing periods are then examined to illuminate how the Court has conceived its role in the adjudication of tax issues. The author suggests that tax decisions have been strongly informed by a classical liberal …

Mothers, Other Mothers, And Others, Shelley A. M. Gavigan Jan 2000

Mothers, Other Mothers, And Others, Shelley A. M. Gavigan

Articles & Book Chapters

My title derives its inspiration in part from the end-of-day watch sounded for my daughter by another child at her day-care centre when I arrived to pick her up:'. . . your mother's here-the other one.' As I think back to that moment more than half a decade ago, I remember with fondness the ease with which my daughter's little friends were able to assimilate that she didn't have a daddy, but rather two mommies-even the competitive little girl who said, 'Oh yeah, well I have about 10 mommies.'

Too, I recall a yet earlier conversation with one of my …

Distance Perception: A Comparison Of In-Class And Distance-Learning Psychology Of Perception Classes, Greg C. Elvers, Donald J. Polzella Jan 2000

Distance Perception: A Comparison Of In-Class And Distance-Learning Psychology Of Perception Classes, Greg C. Elvers, Donald J. Polzella

Psychology Faculty Publications

Fifty students were randomly assigned to take a perception class either in a traditional lecture or in a distance-learning format in which the students attended class only to take tests. The results failed to suggest that the students in the distance-learning condition performed differently in the course than the lecture students. There were differences in what the distance-learning and the lecture students found useful and what they disliked about the course. These findings could be used to help design better distance-learning courses.

On The Seasonal Mixed Layer Simulated By A Basin-Scale Ocean Model And The Mellor-Yamada Turbulence Scheme, Tal Ezer Jan 2000

On The Seasonal Mixed Layer Simulated By A Basin-Scale Ocean Model And The Mellor-Yamada Turbulence Scheme, Tal Ezer

CCPO Publications

Seasonal changes and vertical mixing processes in the upper layers of the North Atlantic Ocean are simulated with a basin-scale sigma coordinate ocean model that uses the Mellor-Yamada turbulence closure scheme. The cause of insufficient surface mixing and a too shallow summertime thermocline, common problems of ocean models of this type, is investigated in detail by performing a series of sensitivity experiments with different surface forcing conditions and different turbulence parameterizations. A recent improvement in the parameterization of the dissipation term in the Mellor-Yamada turbulence scheme, which has shown a significant improvement in one-dimensional calculations, had a positive but relatively …

To Doh Or Not To Doh - The Comparative Effectivenes Of Sightsinging Syllable Systems, Mary Jo Lorek, Randall G. Pembrook Jan 2000

To Doh Or Not To Doh - The Comparative Effectivenes Of Sightsinging Syllable Systems, Mary Jo Lorek, Randall G. Pembrook

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

The selection of a proper syllable system to facilitate and improve sightreading has been a topic of debate among sightsinging instructors for years. While teachers and students seem to have preferences for various systems (preferences which they typically will defend vehemently when challenged), often the favored approach is a function of which system was learned first. Killian (1991) mentions the "this works for me school of thought." Rogers (1996) labels the state of sightsinging instruction in the United States as being a " . . . pedagogical hodge-podge." At times the choice is based on a careful review of the …

Teaching Ear Training Using Medieval And Renaissance Music, Richard Devore, Ralph Lorenz Jan 2000

Teaching Ear Training Using Medieval And Renaissance Music, Richard Devore, Ralph Lorenz

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Most commercially available aural skills materials intended for use in undergraduate core curricula focus almost entirely on the study of tonal and/or twentieth-century techniques and literature. This approach, however, neglects the huge body of Medieval and Renaissance literature that provides the foundation for later Western music. Students do study this repertoire in college music curricula, of course, but often systematic study is limited to their music literature and music history coursework, with only sporadic exposure in written music theory classes (most often to sixteenth century counterpoint) and ensembles. They consequently never receive systematic aural or analytical training in music written …

Gary Karpinski - Aural Skills Acquisition, David Butler

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Gary Karpinski, Aural Skills Acquisition: The Development of Listening, Reading, and Performing Skills in College-Level Musicians. Oxford University Press, 2000. Reviewed by David Butler. The book makes an ironic first impression. When you pick it up initially, you can't help thinking that its massive title (truncated from this point on to Aural Skills Acquisition) seems misplaced on anoctavo-sized book, not quite two centimeters thick. But the title is much more appropriate than you first suspect.Aural Skills Acquisition is not just one more aural skills manual, filled to the edges with specimens for sight-singing and dictation. Rather, its focus is the …

Seasonal And Spatial Variation Of Subgrade Response, Mustaque Hossain, Stefan Romanoschi, Andrew J. Gisi Jan 2000

Seasonal And Spatial Variation Of Subgrade Response, Mustaque Hossain, Stefan Romanoschi, Andrew J. Gisi

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Temperature, subgrade moisture content, and Falling Weight Defleetometer (FWD)-deflection data were collected monthly on four asphalt pavement test sections in Kansas for a year. The subgrade moduli were baekealeulated using the elastic layer theory. It was found that for almost all sites, the monthly variation in subgrade moisture content was not very significant over the seasons. The patterns of subgrade response, in terms of subgrade moduli versus time, simulated sine-shaped forms signifying a possible temperature effect. Higher variabilities across the site were associated with the extreme temperature conditions, usually very low or high average pavement temperatures. In all cases, the …
