Seasonal Body Composition And Neuromuscular Changes In High School Wrestlers: Medicine Balls For Fatigue Testing, Courtney Mccall Condie Carroll
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
This study examines the effects a single wrestling season has on high school athletes’ body composition, muscle quality, membrane capacitance, and neuromuscular performance, and whether instrumented medicine balls are sensitive enough to serve as a field test for chronic fatigue. Twenty-five high school wrestlers (males=18, females=7) were recruited and assessed pre-season (Pre), mid-season (Mid), and end-of-season (Post). Outcome measures included body mass, fat-free mass, fat mass (via bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy), echo intensity (EI, via B-mode ultrasound) of the vastus lateralis (VL) and biceps brachii (BB), and countermovement rotational and backward-overhead throws with medicine balls instrumented with accelerometers. Repeated measures ANOVA …
Uncanniness In Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, Seth L. Callor
Uncanniness In Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, Seth L. Callor
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
This thesis explores how Toni Morrison’s 1970 novel The Bluest Eye has a feature called the uncanny. Uncanniness, as originally explained by Sigmund Freud, is when something that was familiar becomes unsettlingly unfamiliar in a way that was likely once repressed. Other thinkers have since talked about how the uncanny is used in stories to question how their demographics are oppressed. Following their example, this thesis explains how The Bluest Eye is an example of using the uncanny to question harmful ways of seeing. Through demonstrating how The Bluest Eye uses obviously uncanny things like dolls and moves to more …
The Dragon In The Dress: A Folklore Analysis Of Gender Bias In Ai-Generated Monster Imagery, Nicole M. Christensen
The Dragon In The Dress: A Folklore Analysis Of Gender Bias In Ai-Generated Monster Imagery, Nicole M. Christensen
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
When asked to generate a monster, AI image generators consistently produce masculine or genderless creatures and never female ones. This thesis documents that finding through a year-long experiment across seven generators that produced 577 monster images, not one of which depicted a female monster. Female monstrosity has deep roots in folklore and cultural tradition, yet it is entirely absent from these systems' neutral outputs. When specifically prompted, the generators handled female monstrosity in wildly different ways, ranging from hypersexualized figures to a dragon wearing a dress, while male monsters looked nearly identical across all platforms. The inconsistency between generators indicates …
“Women Vs. Perfection:” A Pentadic Analysis Of Toxicity In Online Gaming, Niyayesh Arshadnia
“Women Vs. Perfection:” A Pentadic Analysis Of Toxicity In Online Gaming, Niyayesh Arshadnia
All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present
This thesis utilizes a mixed-methods approach to examine an online video game player community as a case study to diagnose the underlying reason for widespread hostile behavior, especially towards women, among players in the online gaming sphere. The application of dramatism, a rhetorical theory that breaks down human behavior into elements of drama, reveals that the gaming industry and gaming culture are the likely perpetuators of this issue due to the environments they create and the behaviors they reward. This project is a diagnostic step towards rhetorically alleviating the exclusionary attitude of users in online gaming spaces through further research.
Long Term Changes In Elk Group Size And Composition (2002-2023) In Relation To Wolf Hunting Sucess, Kennedy Price
Long Term Changes In Elk Group Size And Composition (2002-2023) In Relation To Wolf Hunting Sucess, Kennedy Price
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Elk (Cervus elaphus) in Yellowstone National Park exist within a predator-prey system shaped by long-term interactions with wolves (Canis lupus). This predator-prey system represents an important model for understanding how predation influences ungulate behavior and social organization. Predators affect prey behavior through direct and indirect interactions and may cause long-term changes. What this study strives to answer is if predator success can have long term effects on prey grouping behavior and age-sex structure. In a previous study, wolves were found to be most successful hunting medium sized group of elk (20-49 individuals) in Yellowstone National Park. …
Utilizing Pine Needles To Compare Spatial Profiles Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) In Two Urban Areas, Autumn Jensen
Utilizing Pine Needles To Compare Spatial Profiles Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Pahs) In Two Urban Areas, Autumn Jensen
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are an important class of semivolatile air pollutants known for their adverse health impacts. This research used conifer needles as passive air samplers to create spatial maps of two Utah cities (Rose Park and Spanish Fork) to compare overall PAH exposure and identify any differences in their congener profiles or PAH “fingerprints”. Conifer needles were chosen due to their prevalence as a passive air sampler in previous research and their ubiquity in urban and suburban environments. Second year needles were collected and the concentrations are considered to be an annually averaged view of the PAH concentrations …

Beyond The Canon: From Classical Foundations To Contemporary Relevance In Shaping Tomorrow's Musicians, Lauren N. Tougas
Beyond The Canon: From Classical Foundations To Contemporary Relevance In Shaping Tomorrow's Musicians, Lauren N. Tougas
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Undergraduate music programs in the United States have historically centered ensemble-based instruction on the Western classical canon in order to cultivate technical mastery, stylistic fluency, and disciplined collaborative musicianship. This pedagogical model has proven durable and remains foundational to professional orchestral and choral performance practice. Canonical repertoire continues to anchor audition requirements, institutional programming, and degree structures across institutions of higher education. Yet the contemporary professional landscape has evolved into a far more diversified artistic ecosystem characterized by stylistic hybridity, living composer integration, interdisciplinary collaboration, constrained rehearsal models, and portfolio-based career trajectories.
This Honors Capstone investigates the relationship between undergraduate …

Challenging Myths In Speech-Language Pathology: A Scientific Review Of Augmentative And Alternative Communication (Aac) Use, Bilingualism, And Late Talking, Mariah Morris
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Persistent myths within the field of speech-language pathology continue to influence clinical decision-making and contribute to biases experienced by both providers and clients. This scientific review examines common misconceptions surrounding late talking, bilingualism, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) by evaluating current evidence-based research. Specifically, this review addresses three central questions: Do children outgrow late talking? Does bilingualism cause language delay in children? Does AAC hinder speech development?
An analysis of multiple peer-reviewed studies revealed little statistical support for the belief that bilingualism or AAC use causes language delays. Instead, research indicates that factors such as limited access to language-rich …
Restorative Justice In Cache Valley: Building Community Resilience Through Restorative Practices, Rivkah Haubner
Restorative Justice In Cache Valley: Building Community Resilience Through Restorative Practices, Rivkah Haubner
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Restorative justice as a field of study is primarily applied to criminal justice proceedings or similar topics. As such, its use as a tool in political organizing is an underdeveloped field. Due to its Indigenous history, restorative justice has intrinsically ant-colonial, anti-imperial, and anti-racist roots and is therefore already situated within the ethos of many progressive movements. Historically, radical movements within the United States and across the world experienced both internal and external pressures that undermined their goals. Restorative justice offers a framework through which to understand political action as a whole and specific tools to address internal conflict within …
Automating Building Feature Recognition In Digital Twin Models Using Computer Vision, Jaron Harbison
Automating Building Feature Recognition In Digital Twin Models Using Computer Vision, Jaron Harbison
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Standard 3D scans treat all surfaces as generic geometry, but Wi-Fi signals don't. A signal drops by a different magnitude through a wooden door than a concrete wall. Without labeling these materials, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) cannot accurately predict "dead zones". This project addresses that gap by creating a machine learning model that identifies structural and architectural features. This includes features such as walls, doors, windows, and columns directly from RGB-D (Red, Green, Blue, Depth) point cloud data.
I constructed the model on a custom U-Net architecture featuring a symmetric encoder-decoder structure with skip connections, trained on the StructScan3D dataset …

Provenance Analysis Of Advanced Persistent Threats In Operational Technology Environments, Laura Aminta Guevara
Provenance Analysis Of Advanced Persistent Threats In Operational Technology Environments, Laura Aminta Guevara
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Live vulnerability testing and penetration assessments of critical infrastructure are costly, complex operationally and, in many cases, unsafe to conduct directly against live systems, whether these are commissioned in-house and through third-party providers. For Operational Technology environments specifically, these constraints are further aggravated by the limited vendor support and inconsistent security patching available that characterize many industrial communication protocols. This significantly restricts the scope and feasibility of conventional penetration testing. At the same time, the increasing overlapping of OT systems with enterprise networks and the internet has expanded the attack surface of ICS infrastructure, making more pressing the need for …

Ai-Based Framework For Elucidating The Ring Opening Energy Of Cycloalkanes, Evan Griffin
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Cycloalkanes are a prominent component of jet fuels due to their high volumetric energy density and lower soot yield compared to aromatics. However, the structural nuance of cycloalkanes can make predicting their combustion kinetics challenging. The present study aims to develop a quantitative structure-property relationship of the ring opening energy (ROE) of cycloalkanes. A total of 253 cycloalkanes were curated from the ZINC15 database, ranging from monocycloalkanes to tetra-cycloalkanes. The 3-D cartesian coordinates of the closed shell and open shell diradical states for all curated cycloalkanes was generated with RDKit in Python and used MMFF94 to optimize the molecular geometries. …
Numerical Methods For Modeling Darcy-Forchheimer Flow In Heterogeneous Porous Media, Nate Mcnair
Numerical Methods For Modeling Darcy-Forchheimer Flow In Heterogeneous Porous Media, Nate Mcnair
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Classic approaches to modeling fluid flow in porous media rely on Darcy's Law, which assumes a linear relationship between volumetric flow rate and the pressure gradient. However, in recent years, applications such as enhanced geothermal systems have highlighted the need to model nonlinear flow behavior, since experimental and observational data show that, once flow velocity exceeds a certain threshold, the relationship between velocity and macroscopic pressure gradient becomes nonlinear. This requires alternative models that more accurately capture the physical behavior of these systems. The Darcy-Forchheimer model provides one such alternative by introducing a nonlinear velocity-pressure relationship. However, this nonlinearity creates additional …

Additive Manufacturing (AM), particularly Direct Energy Deposition (DED), has gained increasing relevance in industrial and research environments due to its capability to manufacture complex geometries and repair high-value components. However, despite its technological advantages, DED processes often lack standardization, clear documentation, and structured workflows, especially in academic laboratories. This research aims to optimize and standardize DED processes through the application of Lean Manufacturing principles using the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) methodology. The study was conducted at the Keck Center for 3D Innovation, focusing on pre-printing and printing activities. Key issues were identified. Improvement actions included the implementation of …
Zero-Knowledge Proofs For Verifiable Machine Unlearning, Bidur Niroula
Zero-Knowledge Proofs For Verifiable Machine Unlearning, Bidur Niroula
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Machine unlearning aims to remove the influence of deleted data from a trained machine learning model. This is important because privacy regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, and PIPEDA give individuals the right to request the deletion of their personal data. Since unlearning can be expensive, a dishonest server may skip it or return an incorrect model and this motivates verifiable machine unlearning. Existing cryptographic approaches prove that the server executed a specific training or unlearning algorithm on the committed dataset, so the proof is tied to the algorithm's trajectory. Empirical verifiers avoid this cost but are known to be circumventable …
Log Anomaly Detection With Parameter-Efficient Tiny Language Models: From Centralized Fine-Tuning To Privacy-Preserving Federated Learning, Isaiah Thompson Thompson Ocansey
Log Anomaly Detection With Parameter-Efficient Tiny Language Models: From Centralized Fine-Tuning To Privacy-Preserving Federated Learning, Isaiah Thompson Thompson Ocansey
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
System logs are a primary source of information for identifying faults, misconfigurations, and security incidents in computing infrastructure. As these logs grow in volume and complexity, manual inspection becomes impractical, and automated detection methods are needed. This thesis investigates how compact language models can be applied to the task of log anomaly detection under two operational conditions: when log data is centralized and when it is located at different data sites.
In the first part, we propose LogTinyLLM, which applies parameter-efficient fine-tuning through Low-Rank Adaptation and adapter-based techniques to adapt tiny language models for identifying contextual anomalies in log sequences. …
Contamination-Aware Boosting For Cancer Prediction, Francis Opoku
Contamination-Aware Boosting For Cancer Prediction, Francis Opoku
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Modern cancer research increasingly relies on machine learning methods to model complex relationships between high-dimensional genomic predictors and clinically relevant outcomes. Gradient boosting methods, particularly XGBoost, have become widely used due to their strong predictive performance and ability to capture nonlinear effects and interactions. However, these methods are sensitive to contamination in the data, especially in the response variable, where even a small fraction of aberrant observations can disproportionately influence model fitting and degrade generalization.
In this thesis, we propose a contamination-aware extension of XGBoost, termed CA-XGBoost, which improves robustness by explicitly modeling residuals through a latent mixture framework. This …
Discipline And Identity: Testimonios Of Queer Chicanxs, Marco Antonio Ortigoza Jr
Discipline And Identity: Testimonios Of Queer Chicanxs, Marco Antonio Ortigoza Jr
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Every year, students are pushed away from educational opportunities due to punitive practices. A system of policies and practices that increase the student's likelihood of formal social control, including the juvenile justice system, is often referred to as the school-to-prison nexus (STPN). Existing research suggests a disproportional number of students of color, as well as queer students, are harmed by disciplinary policies. The literature, however, does not fully address students' experiences, particularly queer Chicanxs. This study attempts to narrow that gap by highlighting the disciplinary experiences of queer Chicanxs. Additionally, this study explores how disciplinary experiences impacted their identity formation. …

Katie In-Between is a contemporary young-adult fiction piece that follows the protagonist Katie as she learns about and reclaims her cultural identity. In her process, she learns the importance of embracing her identity, which refutes biases and ideals about who is and who is not part of her community. This story draws on personal experience navigating cultural identity and confronting histories and events that suppress that minority community's expression in American society. Through narration, poetry, and journal entries, readers are exposed to the confrontation of languages and histories to support ideas such as Gloria Anzaldúa's concept of nepantla, which refutes …
Determining Zap-70 Signaling Pathways Mediated By Ccr7 In Tcr T Cell Activation, Vivian Torres
Determining Zap-70 Signaling Pathways Mediated By Ccr7 In Tcr T Cell Activation, Vivian Torres
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Activation of T lymphocytes is the main event that occurs in the adaptive immune response after engagement of the T cell receptor (TCR) with the peptide of the major histocompatibility complex (pMHC) molecules that are demonstrated by antigen presenting cells [1]. A key step in this process is the recruitment and activation of the zeta chain associated protein of 70 kDa (ZAP-70). ZAP-70 couples TCR engagement to downstream intracellular signaling pathways through phosphorylation of tyrosine residues within intracellular tyrosine activation motifs (ITAMs) [2]. Although there have been extensive studies on the signaling response through TCR activation, the regulatory influence of …

Fatal Remedies: How France Undermined Its Own Objectives In Algeria, 1954-1962, Elizabeth Mae Tornabene
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
While much of the best-known literature on the Franco-Algerian War has emphasized insurgency, counterinsurgency, and the grievances of the colonized, this thesis takes a broader, historical and public administration approach by analyzing the relationship between the development and implementation phases of government and military policies and the unintended, sometimes fatal, outcomes that followed. Although it does this from the perspective of policymaking in the country that is trying to maintain control over its distant territory, it has implications for those interested in maximizing resistance to these policymakers.
By conducting a structured, focused comparison of a typical case across three theories …
