Democracy, Science, And Free Trade: Risk Regulation On Trial At The World Trade Organization, Robert L. Howse
Democracy, Science, And Free Trade: Risk Regulation On Trial At The World Trade Organization, Robert L. Howse
Faculty Articles
Among the most common critiques of globalization is that it increasingly constrains the ability of democratic communities to make unfettered choices about policies that affect the fundamental welfare of their citizens, including those of health and safety, the environment, and consumer protection. Traditionally, free trade rules were about constraining border measures such as tariffs and quantitative restrictions on imports. Increasingly, however, such rules include requirements and constraints addressed directly to domestic regulation. For example, a country's policies with respect to intellectual property rights or its regulatory approach to network industries, such as telecommunications, may now be fundamentally shaped by rules …
Collaborative Research: Conflicts On Authorship, Ownership, And Accountability, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss
Collaborative Research: Conflicts On Authorship, Ownership, And Accountability, Rochelle C. Dreyfuss
Faculty Articles
In this Article, Professor Dreyfuss explores the field of collaborative research in the realm of intellectual property law. Traditionally, scientists, artists, and professors developed ideas alone, utilizing only their own knowledge and research to complete their works. Recently, however, due in part to an increasing need for specialization, the globalization of the marketplace, the rapid growth of the Internet, and an expansion in intellectual property law, collaborative production is replacing individual efforts. Collaborative efforts have posed an array of new and challenging legal problems. Parties sometimes find themselves without a clear sense of who has rights to royalties, who can …

Letters Of Credit As Signals: Comments On Ronald Mann’S ‘The Role Of Letters Of Credit In Payment Transactions', Clayton P. Gillette
Faculty Articles
This paper comments on Ronald Mann's article "The Role of Letters of Credit Transactions." In that article, Mann contends that, contrary to traditional understandings, the function of the letter of credit is to solve informational asymmetries by allowing an issuer with superior information to verify a buyer's legitimacy to the distant seller or to the buyer's government. He contends that traditional understandings of letters of credit are inconsistent with practice, particularly the systematic honor of drafts presented with discrepant documents. In this paper, I raise various issues that contest Mann's claim. First, there exist explanations for the honor of discrepant …

Discovery Of A Young Radio Pulsar In A Relativistic Binary Orbit, V. M. Kaspi, A. G. Lyne, Richard N. Manchester, Fronefield Crawford
Physics Faculty Scholarship
We report on the discovery of PSR J1141-6545, a radio pulsar in an eccentric, relativistic 5 hr binary orbit. The pulsar shows no evidence of being recycled, having a pulse period P = 394 ms, a characteristic age τc = 1.4 × 106 yr, and an inferred surface magnetic dipole field strength B = 1.3 × 1012 G. From the mass function and measured rate of periastron advance, we determine the total mass in the system to be 2.300 ± 0.012 M☉, assuming that the periastron advance is purely relativistic. Under the same assumption we constrain the pulsar's …

Discovery Of Two High Magnetic Field Radio Pulsars, Fernando Camilo, V. M. Kaspi, A. G. Lyne, Richard N. Manchester, Fronefield Crawford
Physics Faculty Scholarship
We report the discovery of two young isolated radio pulsars with very high inferred magnetic fields. PSR J1119-6127 has period P = 0.407 s, and the largest period derivative known among radio pulsars, = 4.0 × 10-12. Under standard assumptions these parameters imply a characteristic spin-down age of only τc = 1.6 kyr and a surface dipole magnetic field strength of B = 4.1 × 1013 G. We have measured a stationary period second derivative for this pulsar, resulting in a braking index of n = 2.91 ± 0.05. We have also observed a glitch in the rotation of …

Building Pediatric Law Careers: The University Of Michigan Law School Experience, Melissa Breger, Suellyn Scarnecchia, Frank E. Vandervort, Naomi Woloshin
Building Pediatric Law Careers: The University Of Michigan Law School Experience, Melissa Breger, Suellyn Scarnecchia, Frank E. Vandervort, Naomi Woloshin
Articles
There are several obstacles to training and supporting pediatric lawyers. Children are a relatively new group of clients and law schools have not traditionally provided pediatric training. The required training is particularly challenging to deliver because it is inherently interdisciplinary, requiring faculty and students to look outside of the law school to obtain necessary knowledge. The greatest obstacle to developing the careers of pediatric lawyers is the low pay and low prestige typically afforded children's lawyers. As a result, law students reasonably question the likelihood of developing a successful career in the field. The number of available jobs is limited …

Phase Determination During Normal Running Using Kinematic Data, Alan Hreljac, Nikolaos Stergiou
Phase Determination During Normal Running Using Kinematic Data, Alan Hreljac, Nikolaos Stergiou
Journal Articles
Algorithms to predict heelstrike and toe-off times during normal running at subject-selected speeds, using only kinematic data, are presented. To assess the accuracy of these algorithms, results are compared with synchronised force platform recordings from ten subjects performing ten trials each. Using a single 180Hz camera, positioned in the sagittal plane, the average RMS error in predicting heelstrike times is 4.5 ms, whereas the average RMS error in predicting toe-off times is 6.9ms. Average true errors (negative for an early prediction) are +2.4 ms for heelstrike and +2.8ms for toe-off, indicating that systematic errors have not occured. The average RMS …

Specific Determination Of Hydrogen Peroxide With A Catalase Biosensor Based On Mercury Thin Film Electrodes, F. Ni̇l Ertaş, Suna Ti̇mur, Erol Akyilmaz, Erhan Di̇nçkaya
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A biosensor for specific determination of hydrogen peroxide was developed using catalase (EC 1.11.1.6) in combination with a mercury film electrode. Catalase was immobilized with gelatine by means of glutaraldehyde on the electrode surface. The biosensor response was monitored by following the reduction peak of dissolved oxygen at around -0.24 V. The peak current changes upon addition of hydrogen peroxide and gives a linear response in a concentration range of 1-50 x 10^{-6} M within a response time of 3 minutes.

Heavy Metal Removal From Aquatic Systems By Northern Anatolian Smectites, Çi̇ğdem Arpa, Ridvan Say, Nuray Şatiroğlu, Sema Bektaş, Yuda Yürüm, Ömer Genç
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Competitive adsorption of the heavy metal ions Cu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) from aqueous media onto northern Anatolian smectites with a mean particle diameter of 200 $\mu$m, was investigated. The adsorption rate and capacity of the smectite for the selected heavy metal ions, containing different amounts of these ions (5-900 mg/L) at values ranging from pH 1.0 to 7.0 were studied. Very high adsorptions rates were observed at the beginning, and adsorption equilibria were then gradually achieved in about 30 minutes. The maximum adsorption of metal ions onto the smectite were found to be 41.46 mg Cd(II), 36.11 mg Pb(II) and …

Electroreduction Of Some Diazine And Triazine Pesticides At The Dropping Mercury Electrode, Petr Zuman, Marina Privman, Masami Shibata, Jiri Ludvik
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Electroanalytical methods enable determination of electroactive species in nonhomogeneous systems, as limiting currents are little affected by the presence of solid and colloidal particles. An example of such applications of electrochemical methods are studies of binding of toxic substances, such as pesticides, on slightly soluble polymers, such as lignin. To successfully apply polarographic methods for following free pesticides in a slurry of lignin, it is first necessary in principle to elucidate the electrochemical processes involved. In aqueous buffered solutions the electron transfers, in which organic compounds participate, are in the majority of cases accompanied by chemical reactions. To elucidate the …
Evolutionary Algorithms For Solving Large Time Dependent Traveling Salesman Problems, Leonard J. Testa
Evolutionary Algorithms For Solving Large Time Dependent Traveling Salesman Problems, Leonard J. Testa
Theses
This thesis presents an evolutionary algorithm (EA) to efficiently solve large instances of the time dependent travelling salesman problem (TDTSP). In this approach, the path the salesman must follow is structured as an ordered list of cities. The path may optionally have two kinds of constraints. Precedence constraints specify that a specific city must be visited before another specific city. "Time windows" specify the time at which specific cities must be visited. This work demonstrate that EAs are more effective than traditional methods, such as linear or dynamic programming, for solving general TDTSPs of up to 50 cities. This thesis …

The Heuristics Of Intellectual Due Process: A Primer For Triers Of Science, Erica Beecher-Monas

Scientific evidence is an inescapable facet of modern litigation. The Supreme Court; beginning with the seminal case of Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc, and continuing with General Electric Co. v. Joiner and Kumho Tire Co. v. Carmichael, has instructed federal judges to evaluate the scientific validity of such evidence in determining the evidence's adinissibiliV. In this Article, Professor Erica Beecher-Monas argues that many judges ignore the science component of their "gatekeeping" duties, focusing instead on rules of convenience that have little scientific justification. As a result, size demonstrates that judges reject even scientifically uncontroversial evidence that would have litttlroeu …
