Canada Lynx Conservation Assessment And Strategy, Bill Ruediger, Jim Claar, Steve Mighton, Bob Naney, Tony Rinaldi, Fred Wahl, Nancy Warren, Dick Wenger, Al Williamson, Lyle Lewis, Bryon Holt, Gary Patton, Joel Trick, Anne Vandehey, Steve Gniadek

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The Lynx Conservation Assessment and Strategy was developed to provide a consistent and effective approach to conserve Canada lynx on federal lands in the conterminous United States. The United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service, United States Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management, and United States Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service initiated the Lynx Conservation Strategy Action Plan in spring of 1998.

The lynx has been proposed for listing as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (Federal Register, Volume 63, No. 130, July 8, 1998). In the proposed rule, the U.S. Fish and …

Cytokines In Mycoplasma Hyorhinis-Induced Arthritis In Pigs Bred Selectively For High And Low Immune Responses, N. R. Jayagopala Reddy, Bruce N. Wilkie, Peter Borgs, Bonnie A. Mallard Jan 2000

Cytokines In Mycoplasma Hyorhinis-Induced Arthritis In Pigs Bred Selectively For High And Low Immune Responses, N. R. Jayagopala Reddy, Bruce N. Wilkie, Peter Borgs, Bonnie A. Mallard

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Yorkshire pigs were bred selectively for high and low immune responses (H and L pigs, respectively) based on multiple antibody (Ab) and cell-mediated immune response traits. In a previous experiment, generation 4 (G4) pigs of each line were infected with Mycoplasma hyorhinis. High responders had a more rapid and higher Ab response and less polyserositis, but arthritis was more severe in H pigs than in L pigs. To test the hypothesis that line differences were attributable to differential expression of cytokines, M. hyorhinis infection was induced in pigs of G8. Arthritis was more severe clinically (P, ≤0.05) and postmortem …

The Use Of Plasma Urea As An Indicator Of Protein Status In Growing-Finishing Pigs, Robert Fischer, Phillip S. Miller, Austin J. Lewis Jan 2000

The Use Of Plasma Urea As An Indicator Of Protein Status In Growing-Finishing Pigs, Robert Fischer, Phillip S. Miller, Austin J. Lewis

Nebraska Swine Reports

An experiment is being conducted on commercial swine operations to determine if plasma urea concentration can be used as an indicator of protein status in growing-finishing pigs. Swine producers in Eastern Nebraska are being selected to participate in this on-farm study. The experiment includes the completion of a 30-question survey and an on-farm visit for the collection of blood and feed samples. The survey includes questions about genetics, nutrition, housing and health. Preliminary results suggest that crude protein is overfed in most finishing diets. Gilts consistently have lower plasma urea concentrations than barrows when gilts and barrows are fed the …

Candidate Reproductive Genes Do Not Explain Responses In Lines Selected For Ovulation Rate And Litter Size, Regina Linville, Daniel Pomp, Rodger K. Johnson

Nebraska Swine Reports

Molecular technologies have developed rapidly and provide methods to select directly for genes controlling economic traits. The swine genetic linkage map is the most highly developed of all livestock species. Positions on the chromosomes of several genes are known. Some of these genes have been shown to have direct effects on economic traits. Selection lines that differ from the control line by as much as 50% in ovulation rate and litter size exist at Nebraska. This experiment evaluated whether six specific genes that produce important proteins in reproductive processes explained responses in ovulation rate and litter size in two of …

Surface Composition Of MnXCo1-XO Solid Solutions By X-Ray Photoelectron And Auger Spectroscopies, Marjorie Langell, F. Gevrey, M. W. Nydegger Jan 2000

Surface Composition Of MnXCo1-XO Solid Solutions By X-Ray Photoelectron And Auger Spectroscopies, Marjorie Langell, F. Gevrey, M. W. Nydegger

Marjorie A. Langell Publications

Auger and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies have been used to study the surface composition of MnxCo1-xO (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) solid solutions. The polycrystalline materials, which are bulk homogeneous, present clear signs of deviation in surface composition at xbulk ≈ 0.2–0.4 to become surface-enriched in manganese at the expense of the cobalt. Whether on stoichiometric or cobalt-depleted surfaces, cobalt retains the characteristic XPS 2p satellite structure and binding energies of the rock salt monoxide (CoO or MnxCo1-xO) environment. Manganese 2p XP spectra are appropriately monoxide-like for the stoichiometric surfaces …

Dynamics Of Warp And Weft: Contemporary Trends In Naga Textiles And The Naga Collection At The Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, Vibha Joshi

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

This paper, based on preliminary findings, attempts to show the dynamic processes of change and incorporation of new ideas and materials in the textiles of the Nagas of northeast India by comparing the contemporary textile trends with those seen in the Naga collection at the Pitt Rivers Museum (PRM) in Oxford.

The discussion derives from Emma Tarlo and Appadurai's views on museum collections and the role clothes play in a people's identity. Tarlo (Clothing Matters, 1996) writes that textile and clothes displays in museums often take the clothes out of their social, political and economic context. Following Appadurai …

From Upholstery To Installation: Educating Designers And Artists Using An Electronic Jacquard Loom, Deborah First Jan 2000

From Upholstery To Installation: Educating Designers And Artists Using An Electronic Jacquard Loom, Deborah First

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In the fall of 1998 students and faculty in the fibers department at Savannah College of Art and Design began to use their newly installed A VL electronic jacquard 100m (figure 1 ).

Since its arrival, students have explored the 100m's capabilities for designing and producing samples for the textile design industry as well as using it as a tool for art making.

Students preparing textile design portfolios study woven structure and its relationship to image-based digital design directly through their use of the 100m and the design software. Because they weave their designs independently of a technician, there is …

Mirroring And Mimicking Of Partial Cross Sections In The Vicinity Of A Resonance, Chien-Nan Liu, Anthony F. Starace Jan 2000

Mirroring And Mimicking Of Partial Cross Sections In The Vicinity Of A Resonance, Chien-Nan Liu, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

We review recent analytical work on mirroring and mimicking behavior of resonance profiles in different partial cross sections. This work is related to the work of Fano and Cooper on resonance profiles in total cross sections and that of Starace on resonance profiles in partial cross sections. Applications of the new theories (describing mirroring and mimicking behavior) to recent experimental measurements and theoretical predictions for photoionization, photodetachment, and Auger spectroscopy in the vicinity of resonance structures are discussed.

The Eclectic Model Of Censorship, Kenji Yoshino Jan 2000

The Eclectic Model Of Censorship, Kenji Yoshino

Faculty Articles

In Part I of this review, I elaborate on the parallel stories that can be told about changing conceptions of subjects and speech: stories of error (the classical model's sentimental conception), overcorrection (the Foucaultian model's skeptical conception), and equilibration (the contemporary model's comprehensive conception). I argue that despite postmodern encouragement to view all censorship as arising from norms, the contemporary model has retained a partially sentimental conception (which could also be called a partially skeptical conception) of both subjects and speech as discrete agents of censorship. I call the contemporary model the "eclectic" model of censorship, drawing on the historical …

Making Government Pay: Markets, Politics, And The Allocation Of Constitutional Costs, Daryl J. Levinson Jan 2000

Making Government Pay: Markets, Politics, And The Allocation Of Constitutional Costs, Daryl J. Levinson

Faculty Articles

Instrumental analysis of private law damage remedies assumes rational economic actors in a market environment. A privately owned factory forced by the tort system to pay $1000 in pollution costs suffered by a downstream neighbor will continue to pollute if, and only if, the private benefits of its pollution-producing activity exceed $1000. At least within the law and economics paradigm, we can safely take for granted the rather strong assumptions upon which this analysis rests. No one doubts; for example, that a profit-maximizing firm will tend to ignore social costs that are not reflected in financial outflows, or that it …

Vicarious Liability Of Health Plans For Medical Injuries, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2000

Vicarious Liability Of Health Plans For Medical Injuries, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

This English influence will prove itself again in this brief article on the role of vicarious liability and managed care organizations (MCOs) which has been in the news so much today. As usual, I think that the best way to cut into this problem is by indirection. The novelty of liability for MCOs is best placed in perspective by comparing the claims for liability here with those which could be made, both in England and the United States, by employees against their employers for work-related accidents.

Interpretation And Standardiziation In Electronic Sales Contracts, Clayton P. Gillette Jan 2000

Interpretation And Standardiziation In Electronic Sales Contracts, Clayton P. Gillette

Faculty Articles

This article explores two areas in which the advent of XML (Extensible Markup Language) poses issues of interest in contract law, or more specifically, sales law. What is noteworthy, however, is that neither of these issues is unique to XML. Rather, in each case, XML simply provides a new manifestation or application of a long-existing issue in commercial law. This is a source of hope, insofar as resolution of these issues does not require the development of new institutions or pose insurmountable obstacles to successful contracting. On the other hand, the prevalence of these problems in sales law generally suggests …
