Correlations between charged particles in deep inelastic e+ p scattering have been studied in the Breit frame with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 6.4pb-1. Short-range correlations are analysed in terms of the angular separation between current-region particles within a cone centred around the virtual photon axis. Long-range correlations between the current and target regions have also been measured. The data support predictions for the scaling behaviour of the angular correlations at high Q2 and for anti-correlations between the current and target regions over a large range in Q2 and in the Bjorken scaling variable x. …

The e+p charged-current deep inelastic scattering cross sections, dσ/dQ2 for Q2 between 200 and 60000 GeV2, and dσ/dx and dσ/dy for Q2 > 200 GeV2, have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. A data sample of 47.7 pb-1, collected at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV, has been used. The double-differential cross-section dσ/dQ2 falls by a factor of about 50000 as Q2 increases from 280 to 30000 GeV2. The double differential cross section d2σ/dxdQ2 has also been measured. A comparison between the data and Standard Model (SM) predictions shows that contributions from antiquarks (ū and c̄) and quarks (d …

Predicting Turnover And Retention In Nursing Home Administrators: Management And Policy Implications, Douglas A. Singh, Robert C. Schwab

Faculty Publications

Administrator turnover and its impact on the quality of patient care are important concerns in the nursing home industry. This study evaluates a model to determine which factors, attitudes, and personal characteristics can predict tenure. Responses to a survey from 290 nursing home administrators (NHAs) who furnished data on their previous positions were analyzed using logistic regression methods. The extracted model correlates tenure with the administrator's past patterns of stability, community attachment, organizational commitment, and facility performance. The model is particularly effective (85% accuracy) in flagging NHAs who are likely to depart within their first 3 years of employment. Implications …

On October 29, 1969, sometime after two o'clock in the afternoon, following yet another heated exchange with defendant Bobby Seale in a courtroom full of spectators, reporters, and armed guards, Judge Julius Jennings Hoffman turned to a marshal and ordered: "Take that defendant into the room in there and deal with him as he should be dealt with in this circumstance."' Judge Hoffman described the aftermath:

In an attempt to maintain order in the courtroom, the Court thereupon ordered the defendant Seale removed from the courtroom at which time he was forcibly restrained by binding and gagging. The defendant Seale …

Perceived Personal And Societal Control Of Events And Millennial Irrationalism, Angela Nicole Dennis Jan 2000

Perceived Personal And Societal Control Of Events And Millennial Irrationalism, Angela Nicole Dennis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship among millennial irrationalism and the degree to which people believe they have control over the events in their lives as reflected by performance on a locus of control scale. This belief is referred to in this study as internal or external locus of control. It was hypothesized that individuals who feel that they have considerable control over the things that happen to them would express less irrationalism than those who tend to ascribe the course of their lives more to external factors. It was also predicted that there would …

Impairment In Dichotic Listening Following Anterior Communicating Artery Aneurysm, Paul Michael Evitts Jan 2000

Impairment In Dichotic Listening Following Anterior Communicating Artery Aneurysm, Paul Michael Evitts

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Dichotic listening involves the simultaneous presentation of stimuli binaurally and was initially a method for determining cerebral dominance or laterality of hemispheric function. Since its inception, dichotic listening has evolved into a method for assessing neurologic pathology. An interruption in the central auditory pathways will result in a detectable asymmetry of dichotic scores. Impaired dichotic listening has been well documented in numerous neurological etiologies, but dichotic listening in patients who present anterior communicating artery (ACoA) aneurysm has yet to be documented. Due to the location of the ACoA and the substrates of innervation, central auditory pathways responsible for the transmission …

The Role Of Classification In Knowledge Representation And Discovery, Barbara H. Kwasnik Jan 2000

The Role Of Classification In Knowledge Representation And Discovery, Barbara H. Kwasnik

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

The link between classification and knowledge is explored. Classification schemes have properties that enable the representation of entities and relationships in structures that reflect knowledge of the domain being classified. The strengths and limitations of four classificatory approaches are described in terms of their ability to reflect, discover, and create new knowledge. These approaches are hierarchies, trees, paradigms, and faceted analysis. Examples are provided of the way in which knowledge and the classification process affect each other.

Post-Pinochet Chile And Decree Law 600 (Or, How To Make A Developing Economy Sizzle!), Richard Scott, Judith Scott, Debora Gilliard, Norm Pence

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Geographically, Chile is remote from most of the world as it lies on the western edge of South America away from the world's heavily traveled air and sea routes. Although it is not on major thoroughfares Chile has the look of a ribbon of land B long and narrow B that stretches more than 2,500 miles between Peru to the north, the Pacific to the west, Argentina and the Andes mountains to the east, and Antarctica to the south and at its narrowest point, the country's width is only 56 miles.

It wasn't long ago that Chile was a political …

E-Commerce As A Competitive Advantage For Small Businesses: Overcoming Privacy And Security Issues, Ron Lennon, Julisse Oquist

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

The Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) trend have captivated people in every corner of the world. The presence of both individuals and businesses on the Internet grows every day. For example, in 1998 businesses' presence on the Internet grew so much that many described 1998 as the ".com" year. But why is it that the Internet is so attractive to all of us? The reason lies in the ease of use of the Internet, the speed of obtaining results, the amount of information available, and the global reach that the Internet has. For all these reasons, the Internet …

Cybershopping Levels The Playing Field In Global Retailing, Charles D. Mccullough

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

Today's business environment has an ever-changing landscape. The environment is no longer just local, regional, or national. It is a global environment. The most successful businesses will have to be able to meet the needs of its customers before its competitors. Many people do not like huge stores and crowded aisles. Also, the element of customer service seems to be vanishing. This has led to customer dissatisfaction. Customers are increasingly looking for a new format in which they can buy their goods. They have increasingly turned to the Internet. The future of the Internet looks bright. Retailers are making their …

The Use Of Collaborative Learning As A Tool For Skill Integration: The Problem Of Group Self-Selection, Mark Linville

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

This study examines whether instructor intervention in group formation is necessary to achieve diversity. Consistent with prior studies, diverse groups are found to out-perform groups without diversity. Yet, without instructor intervention, groups are unlikely to achieve diversity in terms of ability and ethnic composition.

The Trade Dress Emperor's New Clothes: Why Trade Dress Does Not Belong On The Principal Register, Glynn S. Lunney Jr.

UC Law Journal

We take it largely for granted today that the Trademark Act of 1946 permits the registration of trade dress on the principal register, but it has not always been the rule. Until 1958, the Patent and Trademark Office, following Congress's intent expressed in the Act's plain language and legislative history, excluded trade dress from the principal register as a matter of law. In 1958, Assistant Commissioner Daphne Robert Leeds changed the rule and allowed the registration of a product package as a trademark on the principal register. Unable to find any legitimate basis for reading the Trademark Act to permit …

Cytokines In Mycoplasma Hyorhinis-Induced Arthritis In Pigs Bred Selectively For High And Low Immune Responses, N. R. Jayagopala Reddy, Bruce N. Wilkie, Peter Borgs, Bonnie A. Mallard

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Yorkshire pigs were bred selectively for high and low immune responses (H and L pigs, respectively) based on multiple antibody (Ab) and cell-mediated immune response traits. In a previous experiment, generation 4 (G4) pigs of each line were infected with Mycoplasma hyorhinis. High responders had a more rapid and higher Ab response and less polyserositis, but arthritis was more severe in H pigs than in L pigs. To test the hypothesis that line differences were attributable to differential expression of cytokines, M. hyorhinis infection was induced in pigs of G8. Arthritis was more severe clinically (P, ≤0.05) and postmortem …

The Use Of Plasma Urea As An Indicator Of Protein Status In Growing-Finishing Pigs, Robert Fischer, Phillip S. Miller, Austin J. Lewis

Nebraska Swine Reports

An experiment is being conducted on commercial swine operations to determine if plasma urea concentration can be used as an indicator of protein status in growing-finishing pigs. Swine producers in Eastern Nebraska are being selected to participate in this on-farm study. The experiment includes the completion of a 30-question survey and an on-farm visit for the collection of blood and feed samples. The survey includes questions about genetics, nutrition, housing and health. Preliminary results suggest that crude protein is overfed in most finishing diets. Gilts consistently have lower plasma urea concentrations than barrows when gilts and barrows are fed the …
