Intelligent Reconfigurable Integrated Satellite Processor, Natalie Clark, Paul Furth, Steven Horan

Small Satellite Conference

We present our Intelligent Reconfigurable Integrated Satellite (IRIS) Processor. At the heart of the system are our reconfigurable vision chips which are capable of massively parallel analog processing. The smart vision chips are capable of not only centroiding and pattern recognition but also tracking and controlling devices including MEMs devices and active pixel arrays. In addition to discussing the active optic and active electronic devices, several small satellite system applications are presented along with experimental and simulation results.

The Pga: Six Hours Of Riveting Golf With Tiger And Bob May, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

At no time in my life could I possibly have imagined that I would sit and watch golf on television for nearly six hours and be able to retain my sanity. I still find it hard to believe that I did just that this past Sunday as the PGA Championship was played to its riveting conclusion.

Pose Estimation Of Target Satellite For Proximity Operations, A. Cropp, P. Palmer, C.I. Underwood Aug 2000

Pose Estimation Of Target Satellite For Proximity Operations, A. Cropp, P. Palmer, C.I. Underwood

Small Satellite Conference

Close-proximity operations are increasingly a topic of interest, where satellites manoeuvre within a very small distance of other spacecraft. A high degree of accuracy is required in estimating the relative position and orientation of the other spacecraft, in order to conduct such manoeuvres safely. Traditionally, active systems such as radar or more recently Differential GPS have been used for relative position estimation, yet these give little information on the orientation of the other satellite. Passive imaging can provide a large amount of information on the location and orientation of the Target, with high spatial resolution. Imaging requires only low-powered cameras, …

The Snap-1 Machine Vision System, Richard Lancaster, Craig Underwood

Small Satellite Conference

In June 2000, the Surrey Space Centre (SSC) and Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) launched the remote inspection demonstrator nanosatellite, "SNAP-1". One of the primary mission objectives of this satellite was to image its companion microsatellite, Tsinghua-1, during the deployment phase of the launch. Later in the mission it is also planned that SNAP-1 will be manoeuvred back within visual range of Tsinghua-1, in order to carry out further imaging experiments whilst the satellites fly in formation. To fulfill its mission, SNAP-1 carries a powerful, innovative and highly integrated Machine Vision System (MVS). This consists of four ulta-minature CMOS video …

Mems Technology Based Sensors For Payload Instruments And Attitude Control For Small Satellites , Alan Doctor Aug 2000

Mems Technology Based Sensors For Payload Instruments And Attitude Control For Small Satellites , Alan Doctor

Small Satellite Conference

The application of high performance low cost linear arrays of thermal detectors for use in small spacecraft is now becoming possible due to the availability of MEMS (Micro Electronic Machined Structures) technology. Large pixel count devices are now practical and affordable. MEMS based thermal sensors allow integration of the focal plane, electronics and optics within the sensor package paving the way for smaller, more affordable and better performing payload instruments such as hyperspectral radiometers, cloud mappers, as well as attitude sensors such as Earth sensors and horizon crossing indicators. Prior to the use of MEMS technology, arrays of thermal detectors …

Microsatellites And Improved Acquisition Of Space Systems, Matt Bille, Robyn Kane, Drew Cox Aug 2000

Microsatellites And Improved Acquisition Of Space Systems, Matt Bille, Robyn Kane, Drew Cox

Small Satellite Conference

Traditional Department of Defense (DoD) practices in the acquisition of space systems have focused on advanced versions of proven technology, meaning large satellites. This paradigm contributes to dependence on a handful of satellites, program schedules measured in decades, and the expensive oversight and program management functions which must be applied to systems which, since there are so few assets, cannot countenance failures. The escape from this paradigm is offered by Microsatellites (Microsats). Microsats are not only useful technology, but technology which enables a different approach to acquisition. What the authors call the Microsat Acquisition Paradigm (MAP) is partly modeled on …

Small Payload Orbit Transfer (Sport™) System: An Innovative Approach To Lowering Missions Costs Without Increased Risk , Paul Gloyer, David Goldstein Aug 2000

Small Payload Orbit Transfer (Sport™) System: An Innovative Approach To Lowering Missions Costs Without Increased Risk , Paul Gloyer, David Goldstein

Small Satellite Conference

The past decade has seen efforts to lower costs by "doing more with less," instead of making innovative changes in the way missions are designed and implemented. Now, the industry is turning towards more intelligent approaches to mission design. AeroAstro has developed the Small Payload ORbit Transfer (SPORT™) system to provide a flexible low-cost orbit transfer capability, enabling small payloads to use low-cost secondary launch opportunities and still reach their desired final orbits. This capability allows small payloads to effectively use a wider variety of launch opportunities, including numerous under-utilized GTO slots. Its use, in conjunction with growing opportunities for …

Small Satellite Conference

This paper presents university-based design and development of a micro-satellite for the observation of a meteor shower from the low Earth orbit. The satellite will be launched as a piggy-back payload of a commercial rocket launcher, a few weeks before the 2001 or 2002 Leonid meteor maximum in which thousands of meteors are scienti_cally expected. The goal of the mission is to conduct the scienti_c observation of the prospective meteor outburst from out of atmosphere, counting the meteors in the large coverage of the night sky looked down on Earth and obtaining visible-Ultra Violet spectrographs of the meteor. Possible launch …

Leostar: Lessons Learnt And Perspectives, Lionel Dribault, Christophe Durteste, Agnès Salvatori

Small Satellite Conference

In 1996, Matra Marconi Space (now Astrium) has started the design of Leostar, a family of small platforms capable of supporting Earth observation, science and communication missions for a large range of Low Earth Orbits. This internal initiative has been triggered by the Faster/Better/Cheaper (FBC) tendency appearing among institutional customers and obvious on the export market. Hence, Astrium strategy was to provide standard qualified platforms relying upon a generic core avionics, as well as customized elements to be used for specific applications. To achieve these FBC goals, Astrium implemented innovative design and validation incremental methods, coupled with the maximum use …

Method Of Testing And Diagnosing Field Programmable Gate Arrays, Miron Abramovici, Eric Seng-Kar Lee, Charles Eugene Stroud Aug 2000

Method Of Testing And Diagnosing Field Programmable Gate Arrays, Miron Abramovici, Eric Seng-Kar Lee, Charles Eugene Stroud

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Patents

A method of testing field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) includes establishing a first group of programmable logic blocks as test pattern generators or output response analyzers and a second group of programmable logic blocks as blocks under test. This is followed by generating test patterns and comparing outputs of two blocks under test with one output response analyzer. Next is the combining of results of a plurality of output response analyzers utilizing an iterative comparator in order to produce a pass/fail indication. The method also includes the step of reconfiguring each block under test so that each block under test …

Total Cross Sections For Dissociative Electron Attachment In Dichloroalkanes And Selected Polychloroalkanes: The Correlation With Vertical Attachment Energies, Kayvan Aflatooni, Paul Burrow Aug 2000

Total Cross Sections For Dissociative Electron Attachment In Dichloroalkanes And Selected Polychloroalkanes: The Correlation With Vertical Attachment Energies, Kayvan Aflatooni, Paul Burrow

Paul Burrow Publications

Electron attachment into the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of a typical polychloroalkane in the gas phase forms a temporary negative ion in which the impinging electron resides on a combination of local C–Cl σ* orbitals. Because of the antibonding character of these orbitals, these anions may dissociate, producing Cl- with cross sections that vary enormously over the chloroalkane family. In this work, we present absolute total dissociative electron attachment (DEA) cross sections for 33 of these compounds, and we show that the peak values of the cross sections correlate strongly with the vertical attachment energies (VAEs) for formation of …
