Low Cost Planetary Exploration: Surrey Lunar Minisatellite And Interplanetary Platform Missions , Susan Jason, Jeff Ward, Alex Da Silva Curiel, Andy Phipps, Luis Gomes, Martin Sweeting
Small Satellite Conference
In order to meet the growing global requirement for affordable missions beyond Low Earth Orbit, two types of platform are under design at the Surrey Space Centre. The first platform is a derivative of Surrey’s UoSAT-12 minisatellite, launched in April 1999 and operating successfully in-orbit. The minisatellite has been modified to accommodate a propulsion system capable of delivering up to 1700 m/s delta-V, enabling it to support a wide range of very low cost missions to LaGrange points, Near-Earth Objects, and the Moon. A mission to the Moon - dubbed “MoonShine” - is proposed as the first demonstration of the …

We have begun the feasibility study to build a small satellite in the 3kg mass range and in the power range less than 30W since October in 1998, sponsored by National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA). This satellite installs three reaction wheels for an attitude control and camera which will demonstrate optical navigation experiment by using image processing. The BBM design status is described in this paper. The components such as a small reaction wheel, electric flash and onboard computer were built. Mothership - daughtership technology and formation flying experiments are planned. New electric propulsion is being developed for …

The Orion Microsatellite Mission: A Testbed For Command, Control, And Communications For Formation Fleets , Brian Engberg, Robert Twiggs
Small Satellite Conference
The Orion microsatellite, under development at Stanford University, will fly along with two other Stanford satellites (“Emeralds”) as part of a NASA-funded project. The primary objective is to demonstrate, for the first time, the use of carrier-phase differential GPS (CDGPS) for the relative sensing, navigation and coordinated control of satellites to form a virtual spacecraft bus. Launch of this mission has been tentatively scheduled for late 2001. Formation flying offers an exciting new approach to conducting space science missions. Instead of employing a single, large satellite, a fleet of similar, smaller spacecraft is coordinated to perform mission-related tasks. While formation …

Denmark's Second Small Scientific Satellite, Per Lundahl Thomsen, Flemming Hansen
Small Satellite Conference
Denmark is now planning its second scientific satellite after the first successful mission “Ørsted”. The new satellite has been named Rømer after the Danish astronomer Ole Rømer (1644-1710). The 2 scientific experiments, which will be implemented, are MONS with the primary science objective of observing some 20 nearby, solarlike stars by measuring tiny oscillations in intensity and colour by precision photometry. This is done to probe the stellar interior for determination of its temperature, composition, age and internal rotation, and Ballerina with the primary science objective of tracing and monitoring short “Gamma-Ray Bursts”. The current mass of the combined satellite …

Small Satellite Conference
Nowadays, it is widely used the term Nanosatellite when we refer to those satellites whose mass are less than about 10 kg. But it is not only a question of size and power consumption when we talk about this new kind of satellites; it is also a new spacecraft design philosophy. In this paper, we present a small LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite, named ‘NANOSAT’, designed and developed by the Spanish Space Agency INTA (Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial), currently in the manufacturing and testing phase. We will show here the general design philosophy, which has conducted the project to …

Ness: Using A Microsatellite To Search For And Track Satellites And Asteroids, Kieran Carroll, Alan Hildebrand, David Balam, Jaymie Matthews
Small Satellite Conference
The Near Earth Space Surveillance (NESS) mission is being developed by Dynacon and a team of asteroid scientists, supported by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND). NESS uses a single satellite to perform a dual mission: searching for an tracking Earth-approaching asteroids, and tracking satellites in Earth orbit. There are aspects of both of these activities that are best accomplished using an orbiting observatory. The concept presented here is to implement NESS using a small imaging telescope mounted on a lowcost microsatellite-class platform, based on the design developed for the MOST stellar photometry …

The launch of Surrey’s UoSAT-12 in April 1999 heralded a new era in small-satellite Earth observation. The UoSAT-12 mission, Surrey’s first mini-satellite, supports a variety of payloads, including a 10-m panchromatic imager and a 32-m multispectral imager - both built at Surrey using COTS technology. In building these imagers, Surrey applied the lessons learned over sixteen microsatellite missions, and took advantage of the minisatellite class platform, which can support larger payloads and more complex missions. In the year since launch, UoSAT-12 has succeeded in a series of demonstrations of key remote-sensing technologies and techniques including autonomous station keeping, repeat ground …

The Design, Development And Testing Of A Propulsion System For The Snap-1 Nanosatellite , D.A. Gibbon, J.A. Ward, N. Kay
Small Satellite Conference
It has frequently been proposed to use very small nanosatellites for missions requiring orbital agility. Whether it be swarms of satellites for scientific or remote-sensing measurements, constellations for communications or single satellites for remote inspection, all require some way of modifying their respective orbits. Novel, high-technology solutions to this requirement have been proposed from MEMS to solar sails. Notwithstanding the eventual availability of such advanced nanosatellite propulsion technologies, the Surrey Space Centre has developed a miniature propulsion subsystem using technology readily available today. On 28th June 2000 Surrey launched SNAP-1, the first in a series of Surrey Nanosatellite Application Platform …

Welcome to Mythcon XXXI, situated in the heart of Hawai'i's version of "The Cracks of Doom. " It comes complete with the grayness and the mists, the blasted earth, and a belly full of hot lava-a power even Gandalf couldn't control. But while Frodo a·nd Sam toiled we will celebrate, while their spirits dropped our spirits will rise, and while they were alone we will share together. The most powerful word in Hawai 'i is Aloha. It encompasses a generosity of spirit, and a love of the land, and people. This is what we hope you will find here. You …

The investigation reported in here was prompted by discrepancies between the performance of Irish students on two international tests of science achievement: the Second International Assessment of Educational Progress (IAEP2) administered in 1991 and the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) administered in 1995. While average science achievement for Irish 13-year-olds was reported to be at the low end of the distribution representing the 20 participating countries in IAEP2, it was around the middle of the distribution representing the 40 or so countries that participated in TIMSS at grades 7 and 8. An examination of the effect sizes associated …

Making The Transition From Special To Academic Librarianship, Philip Barnett
Making The Transition From Special To Academic Librarianship, Philip Barnett
Publications and Research
The transition from working in either a special library or corporate information center to an academic library requires some adjustments. The least adjustment is the change from chemical information specialist to chemistry librarian in a dedicated chemistry library primarily used by advanced chemistry students and chemistry faculty. Most librarians, however, must either serve in multidisciplinary science libraries, or become science specialists in single campus libraries. In such situations librarians may face new responsibilities. Generally, librarians teach more in academic libraries, often to novice library users. They may teach credit bearing chemical information courses. Some academic librarian positions carry faculty rank …
