We have been lucky as a community that these resources are still in reasonable order and that we have the time to address the resource management challenges associated with our use of them. There is a wide range of land and water management issues to be addressed and all those involved have responsibilities to address some of those issues.

The Elimination Of Export Subsidies And The Future Of Net-Food Importing Developing Countries In The Wto, Tashi Kaul

Fordham International Law Journal

Before providing an overview of the current situation, Section I of this Essay examines past trends in the world agricultural trade in order to demonstrate how the share of the world's agricultural trade from developing and least-developed countries has stagnated compared to those of the industrialized countries. Section II discusses the factors which have led to this stagnation, including one of the most significant factors — the use of export subsidies, as exemplified by CAP. Section III analyzes the implications of eliminating such protectionism for NFIDCs, which form the main focus of this Essay. Section IV briefly addresses the implementation …

Protection Of Public Health And The Role Of The Precautionary Principle Under Wto Law: A Trojan Horse Before Geneva's Walls?, Dr. Hans-Joachim Priess, Dr. Christian Pitschas Jan 2000

Protection Of Public Health And The Role Of The Precautionary Principle Under Wto Law: A Trojan Horse Before Geneva's Walls?, Dr. Hans-Joachim Priess, Dr. Christian Pitschas

Fordham International Law Journal

This article discusses the different understandings of the meaning of the precautionary principle as a means to cope with public health risks. The article reviews the position of the Treaty Establishing the European Community (“EC”) on this principle to assess whether, and to what extent, the EC’s position conforms to the limits imposed by World Trade Organization (“WTO”) law. I will examine whether the precautionary principle, as interpreted by the EC, is reconcilable with the WTO agreements and forms part of WTO law. As it stands now, other WTO members are well advised to take a cautious stance on the …

Homage To A Bull Moose: Applying Lessons Of History To Meet The Challenges Of Globalization, Theodore R. Posner, Timothy M. Reif Jan 2000

Homage To A Bull Moose: Applying Lessons Of History To Meet The Challenges Of Globalization, Theodore R. Posner, Timothy M. Reif

Fordham International Law Journal

It would appear that some critics' cure for the World Trade Organization (“WTO”) is to build it up, while for others, the cure is to tear it down, or at least to diminish its competence. This seeming contradiction makes it difficult to assess and respond to legitimate criticisms of the WTO. The purpose of this Essay is to address this apparent conundrum. In particular, we attempt to shed light on it by (1) describing the nature of the imbalance that exists in the world trading system today (Part I); (2) offering an historical and legal framework for understanding the seemingly …

Trade Liberalization And Dangerous Political Games, Jorge B. Riaboi Jan 2000

Trade Liberalization And Dangerous Political Games, Jorge B. Riaboi

Fordham International Law Journal

I will start this Essay by saying that it is fundamentally misleading to assume that the disagreement over the shape and content of the agenda for the World Trade Organization's (“WTO”) negotiations that broke-up the Seattle's Conference is either the only or the real stumbling block to maintain the pace of trade liberalization. It also is misleading to assume that the present business as usual look that has prevailed since February 2000 in Geneva, means that the substantive problems are over and that everything is just fine. In my view, we face other kinds of conflicts. The first is the …

Additional Quality Factors For The World Wide Web., Ronan Fitzpatrick

Conference papers

Web site development is maturing from the enthusiastic experimental practice of early years to a more professional discipline, addressing the needs of Web site visitors and owner organisations. Quality is central to this maturing and it is necessary to have a full understanding of the meaning of quality in the context of the ever-changing Web. This paper identifies five new quality factors for the Web (visibility, credibility, intelligibility, engagibility and differentiation), together with their characteristics and a checklist of enablers, which can be used by specifiers, designers, developers and evaluators to create quality Web sites.

Knowledge Acquisition From Video, Video With Animated Graphics, And Laboratory Experience: Predictors For Adolescents With Mild Mental Impairments., John D. Foshay Jan 2000

Knowledge Acquisition From Video, Video With Animated Graphics, And Laboratory Experience: Predictors For Adolescents With Mild Mental Impairments., John D. Foshay

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The movement toward assistive technology (AT) and access to the general curriculum provided by the 1997 Amendments to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) has resulted in the need to study instructional methods that employ computer-based multimedia. Although the definition of AT includes interactive multimedia (Blackhurst, 1997), there has been little research on the use of multimedia to provide access to the general education curriculum. The existing literature has provided a theoretical base and investigated the ability of multimedia presentations to improve academic skills, but has failed to identify instructional practices that promote such access through AT. This dissertation …

Developing Lay Ministry Through Small Groups In The Seventh-Day Adventist Churches In Korea, Gil Ho Choi

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

As churches continue to grow from small to large communities, they struggle to meet the need of a growing community. Increasing demands are placed upon the pastors of churches to meet the challenge.

Method

This study deals with a program designed for lay ministry through small groups. It consists of two main parts. The first considers the concepts of small-group lay ministry in the theological, sociological framework of the local church. It includes an …

Spiritual Awareness And Growth Of Indian Adventist Youth Through Retreats, Maywald Jesudass Jan 2000

Spiritual Awareness And Growth Of Indian Adventist Youth Through Retreats, Maywald Jesudass

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Each year, the Seventh-day Adventist Church in India spends large sums of money on youth and Pathfinder camps. These camps provide recreation and interaction among the youth, but often fail to lead the campers to conversion and commitment. The program, the methodology, and lack of trained resource personnel contribute to these poor results yearly. Retreats can provide a better alternative to youth camps. Retreats provide seclusion in which the retreatant becomes aware of self and God. The biblical-retreat models of the Old and the New Testaments form the foundation of the study.

For centuries, the Roman Catholic Church has required …

Bhakti: A Bridge To Philosophical Hindus, N. Sharath Babu Jan 2000

Bhakti: A Bridge To Philosophical Hindus, N. Sharath Babu

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The Problem

The Christian presence has been in India for the last 2000 years and the Adventist presence has been in India for the last 105 years. Yet, the Christian population is only between 2-4 percent in a total population of about one billion in India. Most of the Christian converts are from the low caste and the tribals. Christians are accused of targeting only Dalits (untouchables) and tribals. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, advised Christians to direct conversion to those who can understand their message and not to the illiterate and downtrodden.

The Task

The task of …

Protecting The Florida Keys: An Internet Gis/Ims Strategy For Benthic Habitat Management., Frank Crawford Martin Jan 2000

Protecting The Florida Keys: An Internet Gis/Ims Strategy For Benthic Habitat Management., Frank Crawford Martin

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Technological advancements in the Internet particularly in multimedia and other visualization approaches generally pose great potential for Geographic Information Science (GISci). This potential brings with it both conceptual and operational issues that require consideration and collective, long-range planning in order to effectively implement the developing technologies. The relevant issues surrounding this adoption in the area of benthic habitat management are examined. The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS), and specifically Conch Reef, are used as the case study for this work with particular attention to geographic information systems, multimedia and Internet map servers, management issues, logistical requirements, data access and …

Endothelin-1 Gene Expression In The Porcine Ovary: Follicular Development., Hope Marie Sasway Jan 2000

Endothelin-1 Gene Expression In The Porcine Ovary: Follicular Development., Hope Marie Sasway

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is known to inhibit steroidogenesis in granulosa and luteal cells. This study investigates ET-1 gene expression to localize the source of synthesis. Previous studies showed the presence of ET-1 in porcine ovarian granulosa cell cultures. The present study provides the first evidence that gene expression of ET-1 occurs in the porcine ovary exclusively within the granulosa cells of antral follicles. ET-1 immunoreactivity was observed in 65.7% of the large antral follicles, particularly in more differentiated granulosa cells. An autocrine role for ET-1 is suggested because ET-1 binding sites were previously detected here. ET-1 expression and atresia (one aspect …
