Africanized Honey Bee Colonization In The Human Domain: Issues Of Environmental Anthropology In Southern Nevada, Daniel Edward Lebas
Africanized Honey Bee Colonization In The Human Domain: Issues Of Environmental Anthropology In Southern Nevada, Daniel Edward Lebas
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Environmental anthropology seeks to identify issues and propose resolutions when humans are directly affected by environmental consequences or indirectly by policies that may marginalize the concerns of certain populations. Africanized Honey Bees created both environmental and policy consequences in southern Nevada. Identification of the issues was accomplished with literature review, participant observation, informal interview, and conferencing with academic and agency officials related to the human/bee problem. The controversy in risk assessment has implications for urban residents in southern Nevada. Both agricultural and urban environments may be economically and politically impacted by the colonization of feral Africanized Honey Bees. Urban populations …

Tomorrow Never Dies: The Protection Of Fictional Characters Under The Federal Trademark Dilution Act, Kristen Knudsen
Tomorrow Never Dies: The Protection Of Fictional Characters Under The Federal Trademark Dilution Act, Kristen Knudsen
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
A number of different protections are available for fictional characters under intellectual property law. These have traditionally included copyright, trademark, and unfair competition, or some combination thereof. Another avenue of protection can be found in state dilution statutes, which prohibit unauthorized uses of characters that could harm their reputations, such as by "blurring" their ability to indicate one source, or by "tarnishing" their commercial value. This harm may occur even where there is no likelihood of public confusion, and even where the use is on a noncompeting good. Many commentators have criticized state dilution theories, however, as contravening the purposes …
Pay For Play: An Old Tactic In A New Environment, Douglas Abell
Pay For Play: An Old Tactic In A New Environment, Douglas Abell
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
Promotional strategies involving payola --the payment of cash, drugs, or any other consideration to radio stations and their employees in exchange for airplay-- are generally illegal under federal law. Theoretically, these laws prohibit only undisclosed payola practices. Payola scandals of the late 1980s, however, illustrate that such practices have not ended. In fact, the Telecommunications Act of 1996 (the "Act") created an environment in which pay-for-play, a disclosed and fully legal form of payola, could thrive. The possibility of returning to practices reminiscent of illegal payola has, however, sparked debate as to whether record labels should ever pay radio stations …
Security In Distributed Systems - A Framework For Different Application Types, Ingo Stengel
Security In Distributed Systems - A Framework For Different Application Types, Ingo Stengel
Theses
Security is a factor which decides upon the applicability of distributed applications. Therefore this thesis deals with security in distributed systems. The complexity of the existing distributed technologies makes it necessary to reduce the number of distributed technologies considered in this thesis, i.e. concentrating on: Java, Mobile Agents and CORBA, where only Java-based mobile agents will be considered.
After a short review of basic security principles including firewalls, existing security problems in the above mentioned distributed technologies are analysed. Additional generic problems in distributed systems are outlined.
Solutions are referring to two different areas: those regarding security problems with firewalls …

A Policy Makers Guide To International Achievement Studies, Margaret Forster
A Policy Makers Guide To International Achievement Studies, Margaret Forster
Policy maker's guides
This guide provides policy makers with research-based information about international achievement studies. Good decision making at all levels of an education system is facilitated by easily accessible, relevant, and reliable information. Many indicators provide useful input to educational decision making; but the most important indicators are those which address the central concern of education: the promotion of student learning. Education systems monitor student learning—with the fundamental intention of promoting learning—by collecting, analysing and reporting student achievement data. Given that state, national and international achievement studies are both time consuming and expensive, it seems prudent to reflect on this effort: What …

A Case Study Of The Developing Literacy Of African -American Learners Attending A Tutoring Program At An Urban African -American Church., Gayle Williams Duskin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study describes the literate abilities of a group of upper level elementary African-American school children who participated in an urban, African-American, church-sponsored, after-school tutorial program. Using an ethnographic research method, I relied on field notes, audio-taped interviews, and writing samples to collect and analyze the data. The participants in the study were six subjects (five females and one male, ages 10 to 12) who were enrolled in the tutorial program. Over the course of seven months (October, 1997 to May, 1998), I observed all activities in which writing literacy took place at the tutorial program. From this observation three …
Behavioral Outcome Of Preschoolers Exposed Prenatally To Cocaine: The Role Of The Caregiving Environment., Veronica L. Haynes
Behavioral Outcome Of Preschoolers Exposed Prenatally To Cocaine: The Role Of The Caregiving Environment., Veronica L. Haynes
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study evaluated the long-term effects of prenatal cocaine exposure on child behavioral outcome at age 5 years, while considering the influence of the postnatal caregiving environment indicated by maternal drug use, maternal psychological functioning, and parenting quality. Behavioral outcome was measured by parent-reported behavior problems on the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist. Subjects were 210 preschoolers (107 cocaine-exposed and 103 nondrug-exposed) and their biological mothers drawn from a larger cohort of mother-child pairs enrolled at birth in a longitudinal study evaluating the neurodevelopmental outcomes of children prenatally exposed to cocaine. The relationships among prenatal cocaine exposure, maternal adaptation (i.e., maternal …
Environmental Voting In Congress., John Christopher Howell
Environmental Voting In Congress., John Christopher Howell
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This research project is designed to explore the field of voting on environmental issues in the House of Representatives. A variety of factors are considered in determining why representatives vote as they do; among those factors are party identification, ideology, gender, and region of the country. Special attention is devoted to the difference between those environmental issues in which private property rights are involved and those in which property rights are not at issue. The research project consists of four case studies, each one of an environmental issue. Each case study describes the issue and explains why it is pertinent …
The Early Local And Regional Immune Response To Recall Inoculations Of Mycobacterium Leprae In The Skin Of Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta)., Thomas Xavier D Lemarchand
The Early Local And Regional Immune Response To Recall Inoculations Of Mycobacterium Leprae In The Skin Of Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta)., Thomas Xavier D Lemarchand
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Epidemiological studies have failed to show any important impact of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and disease on leprosy, in contrast to the well documented increase in incidence and morbidity with other mycobacteria in these patients, notably Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The early events following exposure and repeated exposure to Mycobacterium leprae (ML) have not still been studied. Previous studies of first inoculations of ML in the skin of rhesus monkeys have indicated delayed recruitment of CD4+ cells and delayed interleukin (IL) 2 secretion in skin inoculation sites in simian immunodeficiency (SIV) positive animals. The development of the secondary immune response against …
Individualized Levels Treatment Packages For Severe Problem Behaviors In Persons With Developmental Disabilities., Karena Suzanne Rush
Individualized Levels Treatment Packages For Severe Problem Behaviors In Persons With Developmental Disabilities., Karena Suzanne Rush
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Levels treatment packages are widely used across many populations and settings. Most packages involve standardized procedures implemented across multiple participants. The current investigation examined the treatment efficacy of individualized levels treatment packages based on the results of functional analyses and systematic preference assessments. Three individuals with developmental disabilities participated in the study. Destructive behaviors for each participant were maintained by positive reinforcement. For one participant, destructive behaviors were maintained by negative reinforcement as well. The levels treatment packages consisted of two or three levels in which the density of attention and access to preferred materials were altered based on the …
Dna Alkylation And Its Repair In Small Fish Species., Thomas James Vicek
Dna Alkylation And Its Repair In Small Fish Species., Thomas James Vicek
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Mechanisms of DNA alkylation and repair were investigated in 3 small fish species. Following aqueous exposure to either N-methyl- N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine or ethyl methanesulfonate, the hepatic DNA from the western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, was analyzed for alkyl-DNA adducts via high performance liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry. Although potential tissue detection limits ranged from 14--101 fmoles of alkyl adducts/mg tissue, no alkyl-DNA adducts were detected in the exposed tissues. To assess the potential repair of alkyl-DNA adducts in 2 other small fish species, alkyltransferase activities within hepatic protein extracts of the Gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis, and Gambusia affinis were determined using …
Biometrical Models For Predicting Future Performance In Plant Breeding., Monica Graciela Balzarini
Biometrical Models For Predicting Future Performance In Plant Breeding., Monica Graciela Balzarini
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The plant breeding process begins with the selection of parents and crosses. Promising progeny from these crosses progress through a series of selection stages that typically culminate in multi-environment trials. I evaluated best linear unbiased predictors (BLUP), other predictors and prediction models at the initial (cross prediction), early replicated testing and late (multi-location) stages of a sugarcane breeding selection cycle. Model and predictor accuracy was assessed in the first two stages by using cross-validation procedures. I compared statistical models of progeny test data in their ability to predict the cross performance of untested sugarcane crosses. Random parental effect predictors and …
Anxiety And Orange Blossoms: Sexual Economics In Wedding Texts By Grace Lumpkin, Eudora Welty, And Alice Childress., Ida Maxwell Wells
Anxiety And Orange Blossoms: Sexual Economics In Wedding Texts By Grace Lumpkin, Eudora Welty, And Alice Childress., Ida Maxwell Wells
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examines how problematic representations of brides reflect anxiety about women's roles in the marriage market of the early twentieth-century United States in Grace Lumpkin's The Wedding, Eudora Welty's Delta Wedding, and Alice Childress's Wedding Band: A Love /Hate Story in Black and White. The study develops a theoretical model of stages young women negotiate in order to participate in the sexual economic process underlying the marriage exchange: initiate, self-fashioner, marriageable woman, bride, wife, and mother. In moving through these stages, the young woman increasingly loses her identity as she fashions herself into the socially-constructed persona "lady," or marriageable …
Models Of Professional Development For Teachers: Factors Influencing Technology Implementation In Elementary Schools., Marilyn Hill Catchings
Models Of Professional Development For Teachers: Factors Influencing Technology Implementation In Elementary Schools., Marilyn Hill Catchings
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This qualitative multiple case study explored factors which contribute to the implementation of technology in elementary schools. This research had a phenomenological focus because there was a concentration on the structure and essence of the experiences of the teachers and leaders in the phenomenon, the implementation of technology in the school. The four schools chosen for the study were judged to have outstanding technology implementation by state technology leaders and a researcher screening process. They were selected because the researcher determined that these cases were the ones from which the most could be learned. These particular schools had ample technology …
Successful Pirates And Capitalist Fantasies: Charting Fictional Representations Of Eighteenth- And Early Nineteenth -Century English Fortune Hunters., Robert Gordon Dryden
Successful Pirates And Capitalist Fantasies: Charting Fictional Representations Of Eighteenth- And Early Nineteenth -Century English Fortune Hunters., Robert Gordon Dryden
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Successful Pirates and Capitalist Fantasies investigates British pirate fiction during the emergence of capitalism. I initially began my dissertation with the intention of focusing on historical pirates, privateers, and common sailors (the men who "turned" pirate) in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but after close readings of pirate ballads, rogue biographies, plays, novellas, and novels by (among others) Daniel Defoe, John Gay, Charles Johnson, and Jane Austen, I determined that this pirate fiction is not about the historical pirate at all; the deployment of pirate figures in eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century British fiction is an invented tradition of representation that …
Advanced Oxidation Processes For Remediation Of Explosives -Contaminated Soils., Elizabeth Covington Fleming
Advanced Oxidation Processes For Remediation Of Explosives -Contaminated Soils., Elizabeth Covington Fleming
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Explosives contamination in soils is an environmental concern for the public due to their toxic effects. The United States Department of Defense (DoD) is particularly concerned with explosives contamination in soils due to the thousands of sites for which it is responsible for remediating. To date, the most common technology utilized for remediating explosives contamination in soils has been incineration. However, costs for incineration have been estimated to range from approximately $250 to $3250 per ton and are generally inversely related to the volume of soil. The use of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), including dark and illuminated forms, was evaluated …
Caring For The Soul In A Postmodern Age: The Political Thought Of Jan Patocka., Edward Francis Findlay
Caring For The Soul In A Postmodern Age: The Political Thought Of Jan Patocka., Edward Francis Findlay
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study undertakes to examine the political thought of the late Czech philosopher and Charter 77 spokesman, Jan Patocka. It leads to a consideration of the fundamental problem of contemporary and postmodern theory, the question of a metaphysical foundation for our philosophical and political self-understanding. Patocka asserted the common origin of philosophy and politics in ancient Greece and maintained that their animating force was freedom, understood ontologically as our ability to transcend the merely objective and relative in life and to see human being as a being of possibility. He called this insight, embodied in the activity of Socrates, the …

The Effects And Mechanism Of Action Of Cimetidine On Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase Using An Equine Soft-Tissue Inflammation Model., Robert Paul Hunter
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Cytochrome P-450 (CYP) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) are similar heme containing enzymes. Cimetidine (CIM) is an H2 antagonist, and since CIM inhibits CYP, it may also bind to the heme-iron of NOS and reduce NO generation. Six horses each had three tissue chambers inserted subcutaneously on either side of the neck for Trial 1. Trial 2 also used 6 female Thoroughbred horses implanted with at least two tissue chambers as in Trial 1. Blood and tissue chamber fluid (TCF) were sampled at -24, 0, 4, 8, 12 h and at 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 days after …
American Alligator Nesting Ecology In Impounded Marsh Habitat, Louisiana., Steven Richard Reagan
American Alligator Nesting Ecology In Impounded Marsh Habitat, Louisiana., Steven Richard Reagan
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The goal was to monitor a large number of female alligators over a 3-year period to obtain information on alligator nesting ecology. This dissertation, although designed to estimate annual nesting rates, provides additional meaningful information on methods of capture, tag retention rates, nest spacing patterns, segregation of size classes, nest site fidelity, the relationship between attendance and nest success, the effects of fire ants on alligator nest success, the relationship between hatchling alligators and their mother, and hatchling dispersal. Passive integrated transponder (PIT), monel web, and cranial mounted reflector tags were evaluated for marking and identifying alligators. Use of harmonic …
Traumatic Life Events, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, And Health Outcomes In A Low -Income, Primary Care Population., Bradford West Applegate
Traumatic Life Events, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, And Health Outcomes In A Low -Income, Primary Care Population., Bradford West Applegate
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Research suggests that individuals with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have significant dysregulation in a number of physiological indices, especially the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Biological theories of PTSD propose that prolonged SNS and HPA axis dysregulation places individuals with PTSD at risk for development of medical morbidity and impairments in health status. The present study examined the following research questions: (a) what is the prevalence of traumatic life events and PTSD in a low-income primary care population? (b) does PTSD predict impairments in self-reported health status after controlling for age, alcohol abuse, tobacco use, and obesity? …
Intestinal Bioavailability And Biotransformation Of 3,4,3',4'-Tetrachlorobiphenyl In The Channel Catfish, Ictalurus Punctatus., Adriana Maria Doi
Intestinal Bioavailability And Biotransformation Of 3,4,3',4'-Tetrachlorobiphenyl In The Channel Catfish, Ictalurus Punctatus., Adriana Maria Doi
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
These studies examined the role of micelle fatty acid composition, contaminant body burden, biotransformation, and non-specific toxicity on the systemic bioavailability of 3,4,3',4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCB) from the intestine of catfish, as well as the effect of TCB upon the vectorial transporter p-glycoprotein (pgp). Initial in vitro experiments demonstrated that the solubility of [14C]-TCB in micelles was favored by longer chain fatty acids, with higher [14C]-TCB solubility correlating to greater systemic bioavailability of [14C]-TCB in an in situ preparation. The systemic bioavailability of [14C]-TCB was demonstrated to be affected by in vivo exposures to TCB, in a dose-independent manner, and apparently unrelated …
Validation Of A Screening Instrument For Exposure To Violence In Children: The Kid -Save., Anise Lavaun Flowers
Validation Of A Screening Instrument For Exposure To Violence In Children: The Kid -Save., Anise Lavaun Flowers
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Children in the United States have an increasing rate of exposure to chronic community violence. Research on children exposed to community, domestic, and war-related violence has demonstrated the traumatic effects of violence on children. The KID-SAVE was developed as an empirically-based self-report measure of violence exposure for children in grades three through seven. During an initial development study, the KID-SAVE demonstrated excellent reliability and preliminary construct validity data. The purpose of the present study was to provide further validity data on the KID-SAVE. A sample of 188 children (96 boys and 92 girls) and their parents participated in the study. …
Indices Of Exposure To Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In A Bioindicator Species: Point Mutation Detection In The Cotton Rat., Christine H. Lemarchand-Carpentier
Indices Of Exposure To Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In A Bioindicator Species: Point Mutation Detection In The Cotton Rat., Christine H. Lemarchand-Carpentier
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Release of energy-related contaminants occurs ubiquitously in the environment. Cancer induction by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and aromatic amines have been well recognized in the workplace and are also suspected among the general population. Environmental PAHs exposure and effects have been investigated using biomarkers in aquatic and, to a lesser extent, terrestrial animals. Attempts to monitor the presence and effects of PAHs through the detection of point mutations in genes involved in carcinogenesis (p53 and K-ras) would yield interesting clues regarding possible etiologic agents and their potential effect. The identification of a mutation type, known to be G→T transversion predominantly …
Coping Strategies And Effectiveness Among Low -Income, Primary Care Patients With Anxiety Disorders., Daniel J. Mehan Jr
Coping Strategies And Effectiveness Among Low -Income, Primary Care Patients With Anxiety Disorders., Daniel J. Mehan Jr
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
This study examined the patterns and effectiveness of coping strategies utilized by individuals in a low-income, primary care environment. Documented relationships among coping strategies and the characteristics of this population suggest that the population should be marked by high levels of emotion-focused coping and low levels of problem-focused coping relative to the normal population. Descriptive statistics confirmed high levels of emotion-focused coping but failed to demonstrate low levels of problem-focused coping within the study sample. The influence of control (actual and perceived) on the patterns and effectiveness of coping strategies was also studied. Regression analyses indicated that, in the low-control …

The Children Of Molemo: An Analysis Of Johnny Simons' Performance Genealogy And Iconography At The Hip Pocket Theatre., Tony Earnest Medlin
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Johnny Simons is a Commedia Dell' Arte master who brought contemporary commedic movement theatre to the American Southwest and deserves academic attention. Simons and his collaborators, Diane Simons and Doug Balentine, founded the Hip Pocket Theatre to explore original theatre that reflected their chthonic identity. Simons is an auteur, serving as playwright, lyricist, director, choreographer, designer, and technical director for his productions. His works synthesize classical forms with the archetypal associations of his childhood. This study examines Simons' pedagogical approach to his "lyric grotesque" genre of movement theatre. A documented recreation of Simons' most definitive work, the folk/rock operatic-ballet, The …
