The Children Of Molemo: An Analysis Of Johnny Simons' Performance Genealogy And Iconography At The Hip Pocket Theatre., Tony Earnest Medlin Jan 2000

The Children Of Molemo: An Analysis Of Johnny Simons' Performance Genealogy And Iconography At The Hip Pocket Theatre., Tony Earnest Medlin

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Johnny Simons is a Commedia Dell' Arte master who brought contemporary commedic movement theatre to the American Southwest and deserves academic attention. Simons and his collaborators, Diane Simons and Doug Balentine, founded the Hip Pocket Theatre to explore original theatre that reflected their chthonic identity. Simons is an auteur, serving as playwright, lyricist, director, choreographer, designer, and technical director for his productions. His works synthesize classical forms with the archetypal associations of his childhood. This study examines Simons' pedagogical approach to his "lyric grotesque" genre of movement theatre. A documented recreation of Simons' most definitive work, the folk/rock operatic-ballet, The …

Francis Hayman: An Artist Reading British Literature In The 1740s., Stephen Alan Raynie Jan 2000

Francis Hayman: An Artist Reading British Literature In The 1740s., Stephen Alan Raynie

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The on-going comparison of the sister arts (poetry and painting) in the eighteenth century recommends a reassessment of Francis Hayman's role as an artist reading and interpreting literary texts. A founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768, Francis Hayman began his artistic career as a scene painter at the Goodman's Fields and Drury Lane theaters. Although Hayman was one of the most prolific book illustrators in mid eighteenth century Britain, relatively little critical attention has been devoted to his work. Moreover, his circle of friends included such Old Slaughter's and St. Martin's Lane Academy regulars as Henry Fielding, William …

Pathogenesis Of Bartonella Henselae In The Domestic Cat: Use Of A Pcr-Based Assay For The Detection And Differentiation Of B. Henselae Genotype I And Genotype Ii In Chronically Infected Cats., Alma Faye Roy Jan 2000

Pathogenesis Of Bartonella Henselae In The Domestic Cat: Use Of A Pcr-Based Assay For The Detection And Differentiation Of B. Henselae Genotype I And Genotype Ii In Chronically Infected Cats., Alma Faye Roy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Bartonella henselae is a zoonotic agent in which the domestic cat serves as the natural reservoir, and humans acquire potentially serious infections associated with this microorganism. The purpose of this research is to contribute to the understanding of the pathogenesis of B. henselae in the domestic cat using a molecular approach. Using sequence differences in a portion of the I 6S rRNA gene between B. henselae genotype I, and B. henselae genotype II, a nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) was designed and used to investigate various phases of feline bartonellosis. The nPCR detected 3.2 organisms per milliliter of blood which …

The Effects Of Dietary Fatty Acids And Non -Steroidal Anti -Inflammatory Drugs On Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression., Kyung-Hee Sohn Jan 2000

The Effects Of Dietary Fatty Acids And Non -Steroidal Anti -Inflammatory Drugs On Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression., Kyung-Hee Sohn

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Dietary n-3 fatty acids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) were shown to have cancer preventive and tumor regressive effects. Fatty acids and NSAIDs are substrate and inhibitors, respectively, of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which is a key enzyme in the conversion of arachidonic acids to prostaglandins. Thus, the modulating effects of different types of dietary fatty acids and NSAIDs on the expression of COX-2 are studied here. Results show that both n-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) inhibit Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced COX-2 expression and NF-kappaB activation in macrophages. Results from in vitro cell proliferation study indicate that growth of colon tumor cells …

Active Site Interactions And Kinetic Characterization Of C- And N-Nitroso And Peroxidic Substrates With Alcohol Dehydrogenase: Mechanistic Insights From Studies Of The Cobalt -Substituted Enzyme., Alexander Gregory Tkachenko Jan 2000

Active Site Interactions And Kinetic Characterization Of C- And N-Nitroso And Peroxidic Substrates With Alcohol Dehydrogenase: Mechanistic Insights From Studies Of The Cobalt -Substituted Enzyme., Alexander Gregory Tkachenko

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The interaction of ADH with C-nitroso, N-nitroso and peroxide substrates was investigated. To better elucidate the mechanism of these interactions, cobalt-substituted HLADH was introduced and compared with native HLADH. Both binary and ternary complexes of p-nitrosophenol with Co(II)ADH caused a blue-shift of the d-d transition region of the Co(II)ADH spectrum, indicating direct interaction of the C-nitroso moiety with the metal active site. In addition to this blue shift with NADH, both pNSP and N,N'-dimethyinitrosamine enhance the absorbance of the 643 nm peak of the ADH/NADH/pyrazole ternary complex, which suggests that these compounds compete with pyrazole for ligand association with the …

Evaporative Mass Transfer Of Hydrophobic Organic Compounds From Exposed Contaminated Sediment And Dredged Materials., Raghunathan Ravikrishna Jan 2000

Evaporative Mass Transfer Of Hydrophobic Organic Compounds From Exposed Contaminated Sediment And Dredged Materials., Raghunathan Ravikrishna

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Dredged sediment materials stored in confined disposal facilities (CDF) contain several hydrophobic organic compounds (HOC) such as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), some of which are suspected carcinogens. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the volatilization of HOCs from contaminated, exposed sediment dredged materials and contribute to the risk assessment framework being developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Laboratory experiments were performed to measure HOC tracer emissions to air from contaminated sediments (laboratory inoculated and field aged) placed in a specially designed flux chamber. Flux was influenced by a number of factors such as relative humidity …

Politics And Philosophy In The Writings Of Robert Penn Warren., Billy Berryhill Jan 2000

Politics And Philosophy In The Writings Of Robert Penn Warren., Billy Berryhill

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Robert Penn Warren is generally regarded as one of America's preeminent men of letters in the twentieth century. In his poetry and novels-as well as his historical essays, literary and social criticism, biographies, and other non-fiction---Warren often addressed political themes. This study of the role of political ideas in Warren's writings begins with his concept of the "philosophical novelist" who consciously incorporates ideas into fiction. An examination of Warren's own essays about his novel All the King's Men provides a useful illustration of the concept and introduces the reader to two key themes that pervade all of his writings: first, …

Environmental Education Programming For The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service., John William Branch Jan 2000

Environmental Education Programming For The Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service., John William Branch

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Environmental education is a component of community-based education programs. Environmental education in the United States and in Louisiana was described (Objectives 1 and 2). Because of rapid changes in environmental science, and the responses of citizens to environmental topics, extension faculty need additional programming techniques and more process and strategic skills training. Programming techniques and skills training were reviewed (Objective 3). Extension has included representatives from key state and federal agencies with expertise in, and responsibility for, environmental topics on its environmental education advisory committees. The Delphi technique was utilized in this study, with agency representatives as panelists, to determine …

First Graders' Efferent And Aesthetic Responses To Informational Trade Books., Kay Monroe Broders

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of the study was to describe young children's efferent and aesthetic responses to informational trade books. During the study a first-grade teacher read aloud the trade books to the whole class and four children were interviewed following the read-alouds using a standard open-ended interview approach. A scale developed for the study was used to code the efferent and aesthetic level of the responses as: most efferent, primarily efferent, primarily aesthetic, and most aesthetic. Data were analyzed to answer the following questions: (1) Do children have aesthetic as well as efferent responses to informational trade books? If so, how …

Coming Home: Homecomings And Return Migration In African -American Folklore And Literature Since 1970., Stephanie Gail Hall Jan 2000

Coming Home: Homecomings And Return Migration In African -American Folklore And Literature Since 1970., Stephanie Gail Hall

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation explores homecoming narratives and the representation of return migration in African-American folklore and in African-American literature written since 1970. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, sociological, historical, religious and literary criticism are incorporated to examine African-American church and communal homecomings, personal memoir, and novels as extensions of the Great Migration narrative, leading to a reconfiguration of the South as "home." This study includes an analysis of the structural features of the homecoming narrative, including the "moment of return," the migrant's connection to the Southern landscape, the significance of feast, and rituals of homecoming ceremonies. Subsequent chapters explore the decision to …

Biological And Molecular Properties Of Sweet Potato Leaf Curl Virus., Pongtharin Lotrakul Jan 2000

Biological And Molecular Properties Of Sweet Potato Leaf Curl Virus., Pongtharin Lotrakul

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In 1994, a sweet potato sample showing leaf curl symptoms was collected from the field in Louisiana. When graft-inoculated, Ipomoea setosa reacted with mild upward leaf curling while I. aquatica reacted with a bright yellow mottle. The putative virus was transmitted by the sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci biotype B, and it was designated the United States isolate of Sweet potato leaf curl virus (SPLCV-US). Four independent Southern blot hybridizations using the DNA-A of different begomoviruses as probes confirmed the presence of begomovirus-like DNA in the infected plants. Fibrillar inclusions and granular aggregates of geminivirus-like particles were observed in the …

Glucocorticoid Regulation Of The Leptin Receptor Signaling System In The Rat., Abram Madimabe Madiehe Jan 2000

Glucocorticoid Regulation Of The Leptin Receptor Signaling System In The Rat., Abram Madimabe Madiehe

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Obesity, a recognized health problem, is associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hypertension. Removal of adrenal steroids by adrenalectomy (ADX) slows the development of obesity. Leptin decreases food intake through effects initiated by activation of the JAK-STAT pathway. Defects in leptin signaling lead to obesity, which is associated with hyperleptinemia and leptin resistance. In chapter 4, leptin induces phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) mRNA expression and increases glucose production in hepatocytes from lean but not obese Zucker rats. This suggests that hyperleptinemia in obesity causes hyperglycemia. In chapter 5, ADX decreased the levels of PEPCK mRNA, and increased leptin receptor mRNA expression …

Prospective Memory: Contributions Of Age, Individual Differences, And Metamemory., Celinda M. Reese Jan 2000

Prospective Memory: Contributions Of Age, Individual Differences, And Metamemory., Celinda M. Reese

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The influence of age, ability, monitoring, and metamemory on event-based prospective memory was examined using an adapted version of G. O. Einstein and M. A. McDaniel's (1990) task. Two samples of younger and older adults who differed in educational attainment and verbal ability were compared. Contrary to previous research (Cherry & LeCompte, 1999), the age/ability groups did not differ on prospective memory performance. On-line monitoring ratings were not related to prospective memory but posttest monitoring ratings were. Age differences in reports of task-irrelevant thoughts emerged from the on-line monitoring data. Although age and ability group differences on self-reports of memory …

Kate Chopin's Contribution To Realism And Naturalism: Reconsiderations Of W. D. Howells, Maupassant, And Flaubert., Jean Ann Witherow Jan 2000

Kate Chopin's Contribution To Realism And Naturalism: Reconsiderations Of W. D. Howells, Maupassant, And Flaubert., Jean Ann Witherow

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

No one has previously undertaken a detailed examination of Kate Chopin's documented intertextuality with writers such as W. D. Howells, Hamlin Garland, Maupassant, and Flaubert. My purpose is to examine Chopin's works in the context of writers with whom she interacts and so to reveal her impact on the development of literary realism and naturalism. My study reveals that, though her mature writing eliminates sentimentalism, she never abandons romance elements residual from her youth. Her typically subjective narrator removes narrative authority, intensifies our involvement with characters, and validates the marginalized voice. Darwin and the philosophers temper her Catholicism, yet she …

Stratigraphy, Petrology, And Geochemistry Of A Mid-Oceanic Carbonate Platform: Niue Island, South Pacific., Christopher Waldo Wheeler Jan 2000

Stratigraphy, Petrology, And Geochemistry Of A Mid-Oceanic Carbonate Platform: Niue Island, South Pacific., Christopher Waldo Wheeler

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Mid-oceanic carbonate platforms offer a simple setting to study the essentials of dolomitization. One such platform is Niue Island, a former coral atoll capping a Miocene-age seamount in the South Pacific. Samples from 6 wells (≤303 m depth) and 3 outcrops reveal two dolomite bodies at -300 to -165 m (Lower Dolomite Unit, LDU) and -30 to +50 m (Upper Dolomite Unit, UDU) elevation. Paleomagnetism and strontium isotope chronostratigraphy place the depositional age of the uppermost 340 m at 8.6--1.7 Ma. Generally decreasing accretion rates (62--19 m/Ma) are consistent with subsidence of an extinct seamount. The distribution of early meteoric …

Brandeis And The Progressive Constitution: Erie, The Judicial Power, And The Politics Of The Federal Courts In Twentieth-Century America, Edward A. Purcell, Jr. Jan 2000

Brandeis And The Progressive Constitution: Erie, The Judicial Power, And The Politics Of The Federal Courts In Twentieth-Century America, Edward A. Purcell, Jr.

Books

This book examines both the constitutional jurisprudence of Supreme Court justice Louis D. Brandeis and one of his most famous and controversial opinions, Erie Railroad Co. v. Tompkins (1938). This landmark decision led to a significant relocation of power from federal to state courts, and, says the author, it provides a window on the legal, political, and ideological battles over the federal courts in the New Deal era and after.

Purcell received the Coif Triennial Book Award and the Triennial Griswold Prize for this book.
