Movement And Territoriality Of Wintering Hermit Thrushes In Southeastern Louisiana, David R. Brown, Philip C. Stouffer, Cheryl M. Strong Jan 2000

Movement And Territoriality Of Wintering Hermit Thrushes In Southeastern Louisiana, David R. Brown, Philip C. Stouffer, Cheryl M. Strong

Faculty Publications

We describe the spatial organization and social behavior of Hermit Thrushes (Catharus guttatus) wintering in pine plantations and an adjacent hardwood forest in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana over three winters. We used point counts (n = 403) to collect data on agonistic behaviors and relative abundance within the study area. We used mist-netting to study site fidelity on four 9-ha plots within and among years. We used radio-telemetry to measure Hermit Thrushes' movements and territoriality (n = 50). We found that Hermit Thrushes saturated suitable patches within the study area. Most Hermit Thrushes actively defended small [mean = 0.55 ± 0.03 …

State Of The Fisheries Report 1999/2000, J. W. Penn, Fisheries Western Australia Jan 2000

State Of The Fisheries Report 1999/2000, J. W. Penn, Fisheries Western Australia

Status Reports of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources

The State of the Fisheries document is designed as an essential supplement to the Annual Report to Parliament and provides a more detailed level of information to support the agency's non-financial performance measures.

By summarising management changes, compliance activities and research data such as landings, effort, catch rates, stock assessment and breeding stock levels, this document provides a valuable reference point for Western Australian fisheries of major importance to the commercial, recreational and aquaculture sectors. Information relevant to Fisheries WA's Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program is also provided.

The report indicates that overall the major fish stocks which support …

Theories Of The Origin And Early Evolution Of Life, David A. Dewitt Jan 2000

Theories Of The Origin And Early Evolution Of Life, David A. Dewitt

Faculty Publications and Presentations

After the theory of spontaneous generation was discredited, only religious explanations were offered to explain the origin of life. Alexander Oparin (1894-1980), an atheist, suggested that natural chemical reactions produced biological molecules that came together to form the first living thing. Later, Stanley Miller tested this hypothesis and produced chemical "building blocks" but not life itself. In spite of much progress, there is still no clear consensus on how life originated on Earth. Some scientists are even looking to outer space for the origin of life.

Nonlinear Self-Organization In Photorefractive Materials, Partha P. Banerjee, Nickolai Kukhtarev, John O. Dimmock Jan 2000

Nonlinear Self-Organization In Photorefractive Materials, Partha P. Banerjee, Nickolai Kukhtarev, John O. Dimmock

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This chapter discusses self-organization and its effects in optics. One of the most exciting and potentially useful areas of current research in optics involves the understanding and exploitation of self-organization in nonlinear optical systems. This self-organization may sometimes lead to the evolution of complex spatial patterns that can be regarded as the nonlinear eigenmodes of the system. Generation of these patterns is characteristically marked by the presence of intensity thresholds. In a nonlinear system with complicated temporal dynamics, it turns out that one cannot retain purity in spatial dimensionality. It is therefore equally important to investigate the dynamics of the …

The Gendered World Of Disney: A Content Analysis Of Gender Themes In Full-Length Animated Disney Feature Films, Beth A. Wiersma Jan 2000

The Gendered World Of Disney: A Content Analysis Of Gender Themes In Full-Length Animated Disney Feature Films, Beth A. Wiersma

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research has focused on the gender messages portrayed in television programs, cartoons, advertisements, literature, picture books, and fairy tales. One venue that has not received as much attention in the research is the Disney 1 full-length animated feature films. This is a qualitative study of the gender themes and portrayal of gender roles in full-length animated feature films by The Walt Disney Company. The findings in this research indicate there has been little change in the stereotyped portrayals of Disney characters from the release of the first full-length animated feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937 to …

Out-Lawing God The Daughter, Emily A. Hartigan Jan 2000

Out-Lawing God The Daughter, Emily A. Hartigan

Faculty Articles

The traditionally forbidding visage of law mimics the constructed face of the “God of our Fathers.” The punitive ‘Father God’ and the harsh letter of the law are connected in both their errors and their promises for transformation. Both the ‘Father’ and ‘His Law’ primarily impose their wills through “authority” and “force.”

Jewish feminist theologian Judith Plaskow questions whether the law is a female form. Plaskow contrasts the law’s constrictions and abstraction with traditional femeie characteristics of openness and fluidity. Plaskow hopes to redeem her tradition through a God of relationship and love, affirming both law and a new feminine …

Analysis And Direction For The Changing World Of Breakfast Cereal Advertising: A Content Analysis Of 1998-99 Television Advertisements, Megan Ann Lane

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This investigation sought to build on past content analysis of children-focused advertising to better understand how advertisers have responded to the changing television advertising market. It is important because little attention has been paid to the effects of cable specialization and FCC regulations on the methods and appeals used in children-focused advertising.

Constitutional Chrononomy, Richard Kay Jan 2000

Constitutional Chrononomy, Richard Kay

Faculty Articles and Papers

Every constitution defines and is defined by a period in time. Like all law the creation and application of constitutions require reference to the past and future respectively Every instance of constitution-making is an attempt to control behavior over an extended period of time. Therefore constitutions will be drafted, both in style and substance, to reflect that temporal ambition. The effectiveness of a constitution also requires that its interpretation makes reference to the understanding of its rules held by the constitution-makers. As a result, and notwithstanding the efforts to make it suitable over a long period by its creators, every …

The Politics Of Numbers: Zemstvo Land Assessment And The Conceptualization Of Russia's Rural Economy, David W. Darrow Jan 2000

The Politics Of Numbers: Zemstvo Land Assessment And The Conceptualization Of Russia's Rural Economy, David W. Darrow

History Faculty Publications

Historians of statistics are only beginning to understand the politics of numbers that accompanied the rise of statistical thinking in the nineteenth century. In the Russian empire, this statistical awakening opened numerous possibilities for state servitors and the intelligentsia. To officials in St. Petersburg, especially the enlightened bureaucrats who shaped the Great Reforms, statistics held out the promise of providing hard data for the development of informed policies.

For educated society, numbers had a profound impact on debates over the nature of Russia’s rural (particularly peasant) economy. Numbers provided a cloak of objectivity for polemics motivated by different visions of …

Observations On Elephant Habitat And Conservation Of Elephants In Eritrea, Jeheskel Shoshani, Hagos Yohannes, Yacob I. Yohannes Jan 2000

Observations On Elephant Habitat And Conservation Of Elephants In Eritrea, Jeheskel Shoshani, Hagos Yohannes, Yacob I. Yohannes

Elephant

Confined to a small area of about 100 by 50 km, the elephants in Eritrea are one of the northernmost populations in Africa. They are vulnerable because they appear to be genetically isolated and their small number may renders them a non-viable population. During 1997-1999 we visited elephant habitat in the Zoba Gash-Barka in southwest Eritrea to study problems of encroaching human populations on elephant habitat. This situation was described in the preceding article by Hagos Yohannes who is proposing to translocate farmers — with their willing cooperation — from the conflict zone to non-wildlife designated areas. Should such an …

History, Update, And The "Baby Boom" Of Elephants In 1987 At The Zoological Center, Ramat-Gan, Israel, Amelia S. Terkel

Elephant

The Zoological Center, Tel-Aviv Ramat-Gan, Israel, has one of the largest breeding herds of African elephants in captivity. It also has a respectable breeding herd of Asian elephants. At peak population, there was a ponderous total of thirteen African and six Asian elephants in our zoo. Of these, six individuals were bom in 1987. In this article I will describe the background of our herds, the animal quarters, and provide some of our interesting observations on the relationships between the newborn and their relatives, bringing the review up to date, 1998.

Bolivar: "Killer" Elephant Or Abused Pachyderm?, Harold E. Lippman Jan 2000

Bolivar: "Killer" Elephant Or Abused Pachyderm?, Harold E. Lippman

Elephant

“Bolivar” was a male Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) which was presented to the Philadelphia Zoo in 1888 by Adam Forepaugh and lived there until 1908. Bolivar was known as a “killer” because he killed at least two men, one of whom offered the elephant a lighted end of a cigar and his trunk was badly burned. The man tried to repeat the “cute joke” and Bolivar grabbed him and crushed his skull. The elephant was kept in confinement, apparently in conditions which might best be described as “inhumane”. He died, according to postmortem pathological report, from arthritis, cardiac, hepatic and …
