Spatial Variation In Density, Mean Size And Physiological Condition Of The Holarctic Amphipod Diporeia Spp. In Lake Michigan, Thomas F. Nalepa, David J. Hartson, Jennifer Buchanan, Joann F. Cavaletto, Gregory A. Lang, Stephen J. Lozano
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
1. We examined spatial patterns in population characteristics (density, biomass, mean body length) and physiological condition (lipid content, length-weight) of the amphipod Diporeia spp. in Lake Michigan by collecting samples at up to 85 sites in late summer 1994 and 1995. Variables were examined relative to water depth and three lake regions: south, central and north. Most major river systems are found in the south, and this region is more nutrient-enriched compared to the north.
2. Over all sites, mean density was 5240 m-2, biomass was 4.1 g dry wt m-2, and mean body length was …
Avian Mortality At Communication Towers: A Review Of Recent Literature, Research, And Methodology, Paul Kerlinger
Avian Mortality At Communication Towers: A Review Of Recent Literature, Research, And Methodology, Paul Kerlinger
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
A review of the recent literature and research in progress on bird collisions with
communication towers was contracted by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service. In the five year period 1995 through 1999, very little research was published or conducted that is relevant to the bird-communication tower collision problem. It seems that since the major reviews of the late 1970s and early 1980s, few researchers and others have been interested in researching the problem. Before 1985, there was an enormous body of literature, mostly anecdotal that has not been examined analytically.
For the current review,, a standard literature search …
Grassland Bird Use Of Conservation Reserve Program Fields In The Great Plains, Douglas H. Johnson
Grassland Bird Use Of Conservation Reserve Program Fields In The Great Plains, Douglas H. Johnson
United States Geological Survey: Publications
The area enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program in the Great Plains is enormous: nearly 18 million acres, or more than 7 million hectares, in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. This change in land use has had a huge influence on grassland bird populations. Many, but certainly not all, grassland species flourish in CRP habitats. Responses to the program vary not only by species, but by region, year, vegetation composition in a field, and whether or not a field was hayed or grazed. Further, the large scale of CRP has allowed researchers to …

Chronology And Geochemistry Of Late Holocene Eolian Deposits In The Brandon Sand Hills, Manitoba, Canada, Stephen A. Wolfe, Daniel R. Muhs, Peter P. David, John P. Mcgeehin
Chronology And Geochemistry Of Late Holocene Eolian Deposits In The Brandon Sand Hills, Manitoba, Canada, Stephen A. Wolfe, Daniel R. Muhs, Peter P. David, John P. Mcgeehin
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Accelerator mass spectrometry and conventional radiocarbon age determinations of organic matter from paleosols indicate that the Brandon Sand Hills area of southern Manitoba has been subjected to recurrent intervals of eolian activity in the past 5000 years. Although precise regional correlations are precluded by dating uncertainties, periods of most notable paleosol development occurred around 2300 to 2000, 1400 to 1000, and 600 to 500 cal yr BP with eolian activity occurring before and after each of these periods. Episodes of eolian activity may correspond to periods of regional drought, whereas paleosols mark periods of increased moisture availability and stabilization by …

The U.S. Geological Survey Land Cover Trends Project is releasing a 1973–2000 time-series land-use/land-cover dataset for the conterminous United States. The dataset contains 5 dates of land-use/land-cover data for 2,688 sample blocks randomly selected within 84 ecological regions. The nominal dates of the land-use/land-cover maps are 1973, 1980, 1986, 1992, and 2000. The land-use/land-cover maps were classified manually from Landsat Multispectral Scanner, Thematic Mapper, and Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus imagery using a modified Anderson Level I classification scheme. The resulting land-use/land-cover data has a 60-meter resolution and the projection is set to Albers Equal-Area Conic, North American Datum of 1983. …

Distribution, Speciation, And Transport Of Mercury In Stream-Sediment, Stream-Water, And Fish Collected Near Abandoned Mercury Mines In Southwestern Alaska, Usa, John E. Gray, Peter M. Theodorakos, Elizabeth A. Bailey, Ralph R. Turner
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Concentrations of total Hg, Hg(II), and methylmercury were measured in stream-sediment, stream-water, and fish collected downstream from abandoned mercury mines in southwestern Alaska to evaluate environmental effects to surrounding ecosystems. These mines are found in a broad belt covering several tens of thousands of square kilometers, primarily in the Kuskokwim River basin. Mercury ore is dominantly cinnabar (HgS), but elemental mercury (Hg °) is present in ore at one mine and near retorts and in streams at several mine sites. Approximately 1400 t of mercury have been produced from the region, which is approximately 99% of all mercury produced from …

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
A biomonitoring technique was employed to complement studies of metal transport in the upper Sacramento River affected by acid mine drainage. Metals (Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, Pb, and Zn) were determined in a resident invertebrate, Hydropsyche californica (Insecta: Trichoptera), and streambed sediments (<62 >μm) to assess metal contamination within a 111-km section of the river downstream of the mining area. Metals in H. californica also were interpreted to be broadly indicative of metal exposure in fish. Total Hg was determined in the whole body of the insect, whereas Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn were additionally separated into …62>

Persistent Hantavirus Infections: Characteristics And Mechanisms, Barbara Meyer, Connie Schmaljohn
United States Army: Publications
Hantaviruses include serious human pathogens that are maintained in nature in persistently infected rodents and that can also persistently infect cultured mammalian cells, causing little or no cytopathology. The mechanisms of hantavirus persistence are only beginning to be explored. Recent data point to subtle changes in the viral genome that might result in the differential regulation of replication and lead to persistence.

blood samples collected from HFRS patients in 1994–1998, were examined by reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction. In addition, 36 sera were tested by an immunofluorescence assay for antibodies against Hantaan, Seoul, Puumala, and Khabarovsk viruses, and 54 samples were tested by plaque reduction neutralization test. With both serological assays, the highest antibody titers were to Hantaan and:or Seoul viruses. Of 110 blood samples 36 were found RT-PCR positive. Phylogenetic analysis the sequences of a 256-nucleotide (nt) fragment of the hantavirus M genome segment revealed at least 3 genetically distinct hantavirus lineages. Nucleotide sequence comparison showed that two of the lineages, designated …

Expression Of Biologically Active Human Butyrylcholinesterase In The Cabbage Looper (Trichoplusia Ni), Peter L. Platteborze, Clarence A. Broomfield
United States Army: Publications
This investigation examined the utility of three recombinant protein-expression systems (COS cells, insect cells and insect larvae) to cost-effectively produce biologically active human butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE). It was determined that baculovirus-infected insect cells (Sf9 and High 5) expressed 3.5- and 8.2-fold, respectively, more active enzyme than COS-7 cells. Baculovirus-infected cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni) insect larvae produced over 26 times more than High 5 cells ; in fact, one baculovirus-infected insect larva provided more active protein than 100 ml of insect cell culture. Analysis of the larvally expressed proteins revealed that the vast majority of BuChE expressed was inactive due to …

Sovereignty And Sacred Land, Bardie C. Wolfe Jr., Oren Lyons
Sovereignty And Sacred Land, Bardie C. Wolfe Jr., Oren Lyons
St. Thomas Law Review
I was pleased to come down here for several reasons: one being that my son is down here and I get a chance to say hello to him, and the other, to talk about the importance of not only sacred sites but the term sovereignty; tribal sovereignty. We know that sovereignty is an English term, a European term. It deals with sovereigns; it deals with kings; it deals with those who control everything. Sovereignty is something we learn from being in contact with these nations for so long, I think that the Haudenosaunee, also known as the Iroquois by the …

Grounded Visions: Native American Conceptions Of Landscapes And Ceremony, Russel L. Barsh
St. Thomas Law Review
When the first wild strawberries flowered, my friend Chris Jocks, a Mohawk professor of comparative religion at Dartmouth, took his students to meet me at the old beaver pond on Thetford Hill. As the sun set behind a warm sprinkling of rain, we sat on top of the beaver dam and listened to successive waves of croaking, roaring, warbling, chirping, and hooting. "In the beginning," we explained that ''the Beaver made the world out of mud from the bottom of the waters. All the animals came and thanked the Creator. That is the way it was, and the way it …

Save The Whales V. Save The Makah: Finding Negotiated Solutions To Ethnodevelopmental Disputes In The New International Economic Order, William Bradford
St. Thomas Law Review
Despite the prominent contemporary phenomenon of globalization, it has proven difficult for globalists to converge and harmonize fundamental differences in values and belief systems, both within and across national boundaries. Thus, notwithstanding the efforts of human rights advocates and international regime architects, there is as yet no universal consensus as to the existence of a "set of rights and duties that cannot be derogated in the interests of nationality, race, religion, ethnicity or other competing claimants upon individual and group loyalty." The vacuum created by the absence of consensus as to the exact parameters of a corpus of nonderogable rights …

Faculty Response To The Report Of A Comprehensive Issues Review
Faculty Response To The Report Of A Comprehensive Issues Review
Southeast Research and Extension Center: Reports and Administration
The Review Team supports the planning process that was utilized by the Faculty/Staff to identify and define issues for this review. We support the continuance of issue teams in Southeast Nebraska. We will not name the teams but leave that to the faculty and Dr. Cantrell to determine. We endorse the identification of program coordinators to head the teams. It is our suggestion that Dr. Cantrell and the identified program coordinators clearly define these roles in job descriptions, and plan for an ongoing communication between the district administration and the teams. It probably goes without saying, but we would like …

Nebraska Swine Reports
Pigs treated alike vary in performance, due to their different genetic makeup and to environmental effects we cannot completely control. When a group of pigs is randomly allotted to treatments it is nearly impossible to get an “equal” group of pigs on each treatment. The natural variability among pigs and the number of pigs per treatment determine the expected variation among treatment groups due to random sampling.
Nebraska Competitive Livestock Marketing Act, J. David Aiken
Nebraska Competitive Livestock Marketing Act, J. David Aiken
Nebraska Swine Reports
LB835, the Nebraska Competitive Livestock Marketing Act, was adopted in 1999. The act regulates marketing and livestock ownership for packers slaughtering 150,000 or more animal units per year (150,000 steers, 350,000 calves up to 450 pounds, or 750,000 hogs). The act regulates packer livestock ownership, hog and cattle purchases and contracts, and livestock price reporting. The restrictions differ between hog and cattle purchases, but the price-reporting requirements are the same in both cases. Price-reporting requirements go into effect Feb. 15, 2000. There is some disagreement regarding when other provisions of the act take effect. LB835 took effect May 27, 1999. …

Effect Of Wean-To-Finish Management On Pig Performance, Mike Brumm, Angela K. Baysinger, Robert W. Wills, Edgar T. Clemens, Robert C. Thaler
Nebraska Swine Reports
An experiment consisting of three trials was conducted to determine the effect of wean-to-finish management systems on pig performance. Treatments consisted of: 1) wean-to-finish single stock (WF) at 7.5 ft2/pig from weaning (17 day mean age) to slaughter in a fully slatted finishing facility; 2) double stock (DS) at 3.75 ft2/pig for eight weeks following weaning and then split into two pens at 7.5 ft2/pig each; and 3) nursery (NF) at 3.75 ft2/ pig for eight weeks in a conventional nursery followed by movement to the finisher and stocked at 7.5 ft …
