Extending Interval From Seventeen To Nineteen Days In The Melengestrol Acetate: Prostaglandin Estrous Synchronization Program For Heifers, G. H. Deutscher Jan 2000

Extending Interval From Seventeen To Nineteen Days In The Melengestrol Acetate: Prostaglandin Estrous Synchronization Program For Heifers, G. H. Deutscher

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Two experiments were conducted to determine whether extending the interval between removal of melengestrol acetate (MGA) from feed and injection of prostaglandin F2α (PGF) from 17 to 19 d would affect synchronization of estrus, conception, and pregnancy rates of beef heifers. In both experiments, heifers were fed MGA for 14 d, and PGF was given at either 17 or 19 d after cessation of MGA feeding. Heifers were observed for estrus and artificially inseminated for 5 d after PGF injection.

In Exp. 1, 240 yearling heifers were randomly assigned to either a 17- or a 19-d …

The Chicago Counter-Revolution And The Sociology Of Economic Knowledge, Robert Leeson Jan 2000

The Chicago Counter-Revolution And The Sociology Of Economic Knowledge, Robert Leeson

Business Book Chapters

This chapter is concerned with the internal phenomenon. One model that can be invoked to explain this internal phenomenon is the classical process whereby evidence is patiently accumulated until the weight of the argument favours one side or another. Alternatively, Stigler's 'model' of the sociology of economic knowledge construction and destruction can be used to examine the internal opinion-changing process in the "transition from the overwhelming defeat of Barry Goldwater in 1964 to the overwhelming victory of Ronald Reagan in 1980 - two men with essentially the same programme and the same message" (Friedman and Friedman 1982, viii).

Mortality In Serologically Unconfirmed Mediterranean Spotted Fever [With Reply], Pablo Yagupsky, Christopher D. Paddock, James E. Childs, Sherif R. Zaki, Stephen A. Berger

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

I read with interest the article by Paddock et al. [1], who described the detection of occult mortality due to Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) by demonstrating Rickettsia rickettsii antigens or DNA in blood and tissues. In Mediterranean countries, including Israel, spotted fever is caused by members of the R. conorii complex, which are antigenically related to R. rickettsii. ...

To the Editor -- We appreciate the comments by Yagupsky, which underscore several of the salient features of spotted fever- group rickettsial infections that we emphasized in our report [2]. For patients, diagnosticians, and clinicians faced with the potentially tragic …

Modeling Metacognitive Strategies For Student Adoption Within A Problem-Based Learning Unit, Lynn E. Panton Jan 2000

Modeling Metacognitive Strategies For Student Adoption Within A Problem-Based Learning Unit, Lynn E. Panton

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Much has been written about problem-based learning and its ability to promote metacognition and self-directed learning. (Sage and Torp, 1998) This study was designed to determine if teacher modeling of metacognitive strategies, within a problem-based learning unit, would help students become independent, reflective thinkers. Metacognitive strategies modeled were the need-to-know-board, mind mapping, and reflective writing in daily problem logs. The study was conducted in a seventh grade science classroom over a one-month period. Students were enrolled in the district's Major Achievement Program. Data collection included responses from daily problem logs and a summative reflective essay. Additional data was collected from …

The Pitchman In Print: Oral Performance Art In Text And Context, Joseph Ugoretz Jan 2000

The Pitchman In Print: Oral Performance Art In Text And Context, Joseph Ugoretz

Publications and Research

Oral performance art, patterned performative speech for an audience, is perhaps the oldest and most ubiquitous human art form. Specific instances of this art include the performances of griots and guslars, troubadors and shamans, as well as rappers and riddlers, preachers and politicians. While this art form is by definition oral, it is also the case that, frequently, literary art has represented oral performance art. There is written art which depicts oral art, which describes it, appropriates it, criticizes and co‑opts it.

In this dissertation, I define oral performance art as constituting a separate and unique artistic genre, one which …

American Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus Americanus) Recovery Plan, Christopher Raithel Jan 2000

American Burying Beetle (Nicrophorus Americanus) Recovery Plan, Christopher Raithel

Endangered Species Bulletin

Current Species Status: Nicrophorus americanus, formerly distributed throughout temperate eastern North America, now persists in only two widely separated natural populations: a small but apparently stable population on Block Island off the coast of Rhode Island, and a lower-density but more widespread population in eastern Oklahoma. In addition, three laboratory colonies are being maintained, and in 1990 and 1991, about 90 N. americanus were reintroduced to historical habitat on Penikese Island, Massachusetts. Based on the drastic decline and extirpation of the species over nearly its entire historical range, the American burying beetle was listed as endangered in July 1989. …

Galliformes Specialist Group and Affiliated Societies: Reports and Other Materials

Executive Summary

This Action Plan covers the megapodes, a group of Australasian ground-dwelling birds comprising 22 species found from the Nicobar Islands in the west, through Indonesia, the Philippines, and Australia, to Polynesia in the east. Their habit of nesting on or near beaches, often on small islands, makes them vulnerable to disturbance and egg collecting, and several species are greatly threatened. In 1995, the first Action Plan for the conservation of these species was published and this document provides an update on the current situation. The objectives of this document are to identify the most threatened species within this …

The Devil, The Details, And The Dawn Of The 21st-Century Administrative State: Beyond The New Deal, Sandi Zellmer Jan 2000

The Devil, The Details, And The Dawn Of The 21st-Century Administrative State: Beyond The New Deal, Sandi Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

More than half a century has passed since the New Deal, the era known for ushering in the modem administrative state, where broad-sweeping regulatory powers were delegated to over a dozen new executive agencies pursuant to a raft of social legislation. Until the later years of the New Deal, courts were highly suspicious of socially progressive legislation, and, for that matter, any legislation that upset common law systems supporting private property rights and freedom of contract. Regulatory enactments were especially vulnerable to invalidation for delegating policy-making authority to an executive agency or other non-legislative entity. Such delegations were considered a …

The Virtues Of "Command And Control" Regulation: Barring Exotic Species From Aquatic Ecosystems, Sandi Zellmer Jan 2000

The Virtues Of "Command And Control" Regulation: Barring Exotic Species From Aquatic Ecosystems, Sandi Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

The Clean Water Act asserts the ambitious goal of eliminating water pollution and protecting the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of U.S. waters. Yet the EPA, in enforcing the Act, currently exempts from regulation a significant source of pollution in U.S. waters: ballast-water discharges from commercial shipping vessels. Ballast water from commercial vessels is a primary vector for the introduction of exotic plant and animal species into U.S. waters. The invasion of these species poses an increasing threat to native biodiversity; the invaders prey directly on native fish and wildlife, compete for food and habitat, and introduce disease and parasites …

Conserving Ecosystems Through The Secretarial Order On Tribal Rights, Sandi Zellmer Jan 2000

Conserving Ecosystems Through The Secretarial Order On Tribal Rights, Sandi Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

American Indian nations successfully manage habitat for wildlife species on reservation lands through tribal law and through traditional cultural practices. Beyond reservation boundaries, many tribes are involved in managing wildlife habitat through cooperative management agreements with federal and state agencies. Tribes do this because wildlife is important to them for cultural, economic and religious reasons, not because they are required to do so by the Endangered Species Act (ESA), 16 U.S.C. $§ 1531-1544. Nevertheless, the ESA looms over Indian Country like the sword of Damocles: While the Act contributes to the conservation of tribal wildlife resources by imposing federal penalties …

Ego-1 Is Related To Rna-Directed Rna Polymerase And Functions In Germ-Line Development And Rna Interference In C. Elegans, Anne Smardon, Jill M. Spoerke, Steven C. Stacey, Marcia E. Klein, Nancy Mackin, Eleanor M. Maine

Biology - All Scholarship

Background: Cell-fate determination requires that cells choose between alternative developmental pathways. For example, germ cells in the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans choose between mitotic and meiotic division, and between oogenesis and spermatogenesis. Germ-line mitosis depends on a somatic signal that is mediated by a Notch-type signaling pathway. The ego-1 gene was originally identified on the basis of genetic interactions with the receptor in this pathway and was also shown to be required for oogenesis. Here, we provide more insight into the role of ego-1 in germ-line development. Results: We have determined the ego-1 gene structure and the molecular basis of …
