Inventory Dynamics: Market Power Measures When Inputs Are Capital Goods, Lynn Hunnicutt, David Aadland
Inventory Dynamics: Market Power Measures When Inputs Are Capital Goods, Lynn Hunnicutt, David Aadland
Economic Research Institute Study Papers
This paper incorporates inventory dynamics into an analysis of market power. A Coumot duopoly model of competition is presented in which firms account for the effects of current choices on their competitors' current actions on future actions (both their own and their competitors '). We show that measures of market power which ignore inventory dynamics produce biased estimates of true market power, although the direction of the bias cannot be theoretically determined. We then apply the model to the beef packing industry using data on cattle stocks and slaughter from 1948-1999. Our estimates suggest that static measures underestimate true market …

Food Plot Use By Juvenile Northern Bobwhites In East Texas, D. Scott Parsons, R. Montague Whiting Jr., Xiangwen Liu, Donald R. Dietz
Faculty Publications
We examined use of spring-summer (i.e., warm-season) food plots by northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) with broods using radio telemetry on a 563-ha study area in Trinity County, eastern Texas, where habitat was modified to enhance it for these birds. Bobwhites from South Texas and disjunct areas of East Texas were introduced to supplement a small, resident population. All relocated and most resident bobwhites were fitted with necklace-style transmitters. Bobwhites which produced chicks were intensively radiotracked (≥3 times/day) for ≥4 weeks or until the radio-marked parent was lost. Nine hens moved their broods to food plots within an average of 2.1 …

This study investigated the effects of quantity and type of diet fed to superovulated donor heifers on molecular and metabolic indices of embryonic development. These effects included the relative abundances of mRNAs for the alpha 1 subunit of Na/K-ATPase and the antioxidant enzyme Cu/Zn-SOD, as well as pyruvate utilization in bovine morulae and blastocysts developed in vivo. Heifers were fed a daily ration of either grass silage and a citrus-beet pulp-based concentrate or grass silage and a barley-based concentrate for 116 days, both at 3 kg per day or ad libitum. In embryos derived from heifers fed the pulp-based diets, …
Wildlife And World Views: Australian Attitudes Toward Wildlife, Heather J. Aslin, David H. Bennett
Wildlife And World Views: Australian Attitudes Toward Wildlife, Heather J. Aslin, David H. Bennett
Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)
Research in a number of western and non-western cultures suggests there are only a limited number of basic orientations toward other species. In the broadest sense, these can be related to fundamental cultural assumptions about what the world is like - world views, world metaphors or cosmologies —and how other species are represented as a result of these assumptions.
In this paper we explore our topic in relation to two cultural traditions - those of Aboriginal Australians and Anglo-Australians. We discuss how the differing world views represented in these cultures relate to wildlife attitudes. Aboriginal society before British setdement of …

Background: Orange juice - a rich source of vitamin C, folate, and flavonoids such as hesperidin - induces hypocholesterolemic responses in animals. Objective: We determined whether orange juice beneficially altered blood lipids in subjects with moderate hypercholesterolemia. Design: The sample consisted of 16 healthy men and 9 healthy women with elevated plasma total and LDL-cholesterol and normal plasma triacylglycerol concentrations. Participants incorporated 1, 2, or 3 cups (250 mL each) of orange juice sequentially into their diets, each dose over a period of 4 wk. This was followed by a 5-wk washout period. Plasma lipid, folate, homocyst(e)ine, and vitamin C …

Dana Gioia, April Linder

Western Writers Series Digital Editions
The poet Dana Gioia is a pivotal figure in contemporary American letters. One of the most respected and vocal writers identified with the controversial movement commonly called the New Formalism, Gioia has helped to redefine the face of contemporary poetry. In his 1991 Atlantic Monthly essay, “Can Poetry Matter?” Gioia critiqued the American poetry scene, arguing that contemporary poets were writing mainly for an audience of other poets. He claimed that because poets weren’t trying to reach a general audience, contemporary poetry generally was going unread by non-poets, even by college graduates who regularly read novels. Gioia blamed the loss …

Kassner (1997) has proposed to plant shell material in Great South Bay, in an attempt to ameliorate declining M mercenaria abundances. The introduction of shell to an area of bay bottom that meets the other three sedimentary characteristics required for good hard clam habitat could enhance the bottom to create suitable habitat for hard …

Dracula And The Gothic Imagination Of War, Bryan Alexander
Dracula And The Gothic Imagination Of War, Bryan Alexander
Journal of Dracula Studies
When Jonathan Harker first describes Castle Dracula, his journals rely on the language of war. Unable to pin down the castle’s site on an Ordnance Map, Harker is able to see instead the liminal city of Bistritz in terms of a historic siege (11). As he approaches nearer, Harker relates a companion’s (mis)quotation from Burger’s “Lenore,” a line spoken by an undead soldier, all too recently at war (17). Castle Dracula itself appears textually as a mix of military and Gothic discourses, whose “frowning walls and dark window openings” (21) serve both to situate Harker in classically Gothic space, and …
Vampire Crime, Katherine Ramsland
Vampire Crime, Katherine Ramsland
Journal of Dracula Studies
While most of the vampire subculture these days is a benign form of role-playing, there have been cases of people who were inspired by the predatory image to kill. To their minds, the vampire mythos provides a framework that inspires and even licenses certain types of violent behaviors. Although this bloodthirsty impulse reaches back centuries and crosses cultures, I want to examine the mythology’s influence on three cases in recent American culture: Roderick Ferrell, James Riva, and Richard Trenton Chase. I will take one case at a time and then discuss how they attach to the vampire frame.

Decision Record And Finding Of No Significant Impact For The Wild Horse Gathering For The Fifteenmile Wild Horse Herd Management Area, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management
Record of Decisions (WY)
All wild horses gathered from areas outside the HMA are considered excess and subject to removal. Those wild horses not selected for removal will be released back into the HMA. Removal of excess wild horses will leave wild horse populations in, or close to, compliance with the Record of Decision and Approved Resource Management Plan (RMP) for the Grass Creek Planning Area.
