Isolation, Characterization, And Differential Expression Of The Murine Sox-2 Promoter, Matthew S. Wiebe, Phillip J. Wilder, David Kelly, Angie Rizzino Jan 2000

Isolation, Characterization, And Differential Expression Of The Murine Sox-2 Promoter, Matthew S. Wiebe, Phillip J. Wilder, David Kelly, Angie Rizzino

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Sox proteins are expressed at many stages of development and in numerous tissues. The transcription factor Sox-2 is first expressed throughout the inner cell mass and subsequently becomes localized to the primitive ectoderm, developing central nervous system, and the lens. Sox-2 is also highly expressed in F9 embryonal carcinoma cells but becomes undetectable following differentiation of these cells. In this study, we have isolated, sequenced, and performed the first characterization of the Sox-2 promoter of any species. Approximately 2 kb of the Sox-2 5′-flanking region has been sequenced and the primary transcription start site mapped by primer extension analysis. Additionally, …

Unsung Heroines: Women And Natural Disasters, Mary Schwoebel

Conflict Resolution Studies Faculty Articles

Although women play crucial parts in disaster preparedness, mitigation, and recovery, their roles in disasters are often overlooked or ignored. However, history shows that when disasters strike, women sometimes form spontaneous associations to assist relief and recovery efforts. At other times, women's organizations direct their resources for disaster relief and recovery. Women's organizations also partner with international disaster assistance agencies to expedite relief efforts. Are women more vulnerable to disasters? What are women's capabilities for responding to disasters? What can international organizations do to integrate women more effectively into disaster planning and recovery? Vulnerabilities and Risks The circumstances of women's …

G1408 Grain Molds And Mycotoxins In Corn, Jim Stack Jan 2000

G1408 Grain Molds And Mycotoxins In Corn, Jim Stack

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Storage molds of corn occur in Nebraska annually, potentially lowering grain quality. Mycotoxin contamination of corn occurs periodically, potentially affecting human and animal health. Learn how to identify the different types and their effects. Introduction In Nebraska, grain molds occur every year to varying degrees on field corn, seed corn, white corn, and other specialty corn hybrids. Most grain mold pathogens become associated with the kernel in the field; however, under certain conditions of temperature, relative humidity, and grain moisture, these molds can grow within the colonized kernel and even spread to adjacent kernels during transport and storage. Several issues …

Covers: definitions, selection, types of disinfectants considered; disinfectant selection table; and cattle viruses with and without viral envelopes. Includes tables of attributes to aid with disinfectant selection and cattle …

Assessing Factors That May Predispose Minnesota Farms To Wolf Depredations On Cattle, L. David Mech, Elizabeth K. Harper, Thomas J. Meier, William J. Paul Jan 2000

Assessing Factors That May Predispose Minnesota Farms To Wolf Depredations On Cattle, L. David Mech, Elizabeth K. Harper, Thomas J. Meier, William J. Paul

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Wolf (Canis lupus) depredations on livestock cause considerable conflict and expense in Minnesota. Furthermore, claims are made that such depredations are fostered by the type of animal husbandry practiced. Thus, we tried to detect factors that might predispose farms in Minnesota to wolf depredations. We compared results of interviews with 41 cattle farmers experiencing chronic cattle losses to wolves (chronic farms) with results from 41 nearby "matched" farms with no wolf losses to determine farm characteristics or husbandry practices that differed and that therefore might have affected wolf depredations. We also used a Geographic Information System (GIS) to …

A Requiem For The Ifq In U.S. Fisheries, Keith R. Criddle, Seth Macinko Jan 2000

A Requiem For The Ifq In U.S. Fisheries, Keith R. Criddle, Seth Macinko

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Despite their apparent economic benefits to harvesters, Individual Fishing Quotas (IFQs) have only been adopted in three U.S. fisheries: Mid-Atlantic surf clam and ocean quahog; South Atlantic wreckfish; and North Pacific halibut and sablefish. During the 1996 reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, Congress temporarily blocked implementation of additional IFQ programs in U.S. fisheries. In this paper, we argue that because of the emergence of an alternative, the cooperative, it is unlikely that new IFQs will be adopted in federally managed U.S. fisheries. From an economic perspective, cooperatives offer the advantage of eliminating production externalities that may …

Restoration Methods For Deepwater Swamps, William Conner, Kenneth W. Mcleod, Ellen Colodney Jan 2000

Restoration Methods For Deepwater Swamps, William Conner, Kenneth W. Mcleod, Ellen Colodney

Publications

Planting in deepwater swamp areas is difficult and time consuming, and nursery-grown seedlings are often not suited for such conditions. Baldcypress [Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich.], water tupelo (Nyssa aquatica L.), swamp blackgum [N. sylvatica var. biflora (Walt.) Sarg.], and green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica Marsh.) have been planted at various flooded sites in South Carolina and Louisiana. One of the most effective means of planting these species in flooded situations was to heavily prune the lateral roots, grasp the seedling at the root collar, and push it into the soil. Excellent results have been obtained with baldcypress, …

Restoration Of A Severely Impacted Riparian Wetland System - The Pen Branch Project, William Conner, Christopher Barton, Eric A. Nelson, Randall K. Kolka, Kenneth W. Mcleod, Michelle Lakly, Douglas Martin, John Wiggington, Carl Trettin, Joe Wisniewski

Publications

The Savannah River Swamp is a 3020 ha forested wetland on the floodplain of the Savannah River and is located on the Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, SC (Fig. 1). Historically the swamp consisted of
approximately 50% baldcypress-water tupelo stands, 40% mixed bottomland hardwood stands, and 10% shrub, marsh, and open water. Tributeries of the river were typical of Southeastern bottomland hardwood forests. The hydrology was controlled by flow from four creeks that drain into the swamp and by flooding of the Savannah River. Upstream dams on the Savannah River have caused some alteration of the …

Overview Of Emerging Conflicts Over Agriculturalland Use, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith Jan 2000

Overview Of Emerging Conflicts Over Agriculturalland Use, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

I’d like to use my opening comments today to set the stage for the rest of the program. But first, a few words about my background. I’m a sociologist and an economist trained in the dynamics of change in the farm sector. I help direct a research and outreach unit called the Program on Agricultural Technology Studies that tracks the impacts of new technologies and public policies on farm families, and only came to the world of land use planning through the back door. Specifically, as we’ve worked with farmers across the state in the last five to seven years, …

All That Divides Us, Utah State University Press Jan 2000

All That Divides Us, Utah State University Press

Swenson Poetry Award Winners

May Swenson Poetry Award Volume 4, with foreward by Maxine Kumin. Although the poems in this collection are not narrative, they do present a narrative, gradually unspooling the tale of the poet's rebel aunt, who left the family "to marry a Chinaman" in the 1930s. It's an old story, full of poignancy, mystery, family pride, and doubt. When the aunt returns to die, the poet, now grown, discovers in herself the need to reclaim the connections that her family had severed. She travels to China several times—to learn. Gradually, through wide-eyed insightful poems, we see the poet rebuild with her …

A diverse group of writers and scholars follow the lead of noted folklorist Barre Toelken and consider, from the inside, the ways in which varied cultures in the American West understand and express their relations to the world around them. As Barre Toelken puts it in The Dynamics of Folklore, "'Worldview' refers to the manner in which a culture sees and expresses its relation to the world around it." In Worldviews and the American West, seventeen notable authors and scholars, employing diverse approaches and styles, apply Toelken's ideas about worldview to the American West. While the contributors represent a range …

The Journey Of Navajo Oshley, Robert S. Mcpherson Jan 2000

The Journey Of Navajo Oshley, Robert S. Mcpherson

All USU Press Publications

Ak'é Nýdzin, or Navajo Oshley, was born sometime between 1879 and 1893. His oral memoir is set on the northern frontier of Navajo land, principally the San Juan River basin in southeastern Utah, and tells the story of his early life near Dennehetso and his travels, before there were roads or many towns, from Monument Valley north along Comb Ridge to Blue Mountain. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Anglos and Navajos expanded their use and settlement of lands north of the San Juan. Grazing lands and the Anglo wage economy drew many Navajos across the river. Oshley, …

River Flowing From The Sunrise: An Environmental History Of The Lower San Juan, James M. Aton, Robert S. Mcpherson Jan 2000

River Flowing From The Sunrise: An Environmental History Of The Lower San Juan, James M. Aton, Robert S. Mcpherson

All USU Press Publications

The authors recount twelve millennia of history along the lower San Juan River, much of it the story of mostly unsuccessful human attempts to make a living from the river's arid and fickle environment. From the Anasazi to government dam builders, from Navajo to Mormon herders and farmers, from scientific explorers to busted miners, the San Juan has attracted more attention and fueled more hopes than such a remote, unpromising, and muddy stream would seem to merit.

The Economics Of Cattle Supply, David Aadland Jan 2000

The Economics Of Cattle Supply, David Aadland

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper builds a dynamic rational expectations model describing the supply of cattle. The theoretical model inlproves on existing models by allowing cow-calf operators to make period-by-period investment decisions on both the cow and calf margins, separates the markets for fed and unfed beef, and considers a rich set of exogenous shocks. The model is calibrated and used to simulate artificial data that replicates several empirical regularities associated with the cattle cycle.

A Theoretical And Empirical Investigation Of The Supply Response In The U.S. Beef-Cattle Industry, David Aadland, Deevon Bailey, Shelly Feng Jan 2000

A Theoretical And Empirical Investigation Of The Supply Response In The U.S. Beef-Cattle Industry, David Aadland, Deevon Bailey, Shelly Feng

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper investigates the response of beef cattle producers to changes in the price of cattle. Previous research has suggested that there may be a negative short-run supply response to a permanent increase in the price of cattle. We build a dynamic, rational expectations model that predicts that the supply response is generally positive, even for permanent shocks in the short run, and nests the negative supply response as a special case for appropriately restricted demand shocks. Using annual U.S. time-series data (1930-1997) and a simultaneous-equations econometric approach, we find a positive short-run supply response in the cow market and …

Market Power In The Beef Packing Industry: Is It Time For A New Approach?, Lynn Hunnicutt Jan 2000

Market Power In The Beef Packing Industry: Is It Time For A New Approach?, Lynn Hunnicutt

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Consolidations in the U.S. beef packing industry have prompted concern within the government and interest among academics over whether packers possess and are able to exercise market power. Economists have generated numerous studies to test for and measure market power in beef packing, but the empirical studies have failed to provide definitive results on the presence of market power and whether any existing market power is exercised. The thesis of this paper is that the standard approach to measuring market power, conj ectural variations, is based on a model which may not accurately describe competition between packing firms. I first …
