Role Of The Dopamine D₁-Like Receptor In Amphetamine-Induced Behavioral Sensitization: A Study Using Dopamine D₁A-Receptor Deficient Mice, Patrick Eugene Karper Jan 2000

Role Of The Dopamine D₁-Like Receptor In Amphetamine-Induced Behavioral Sensitization: A Study Using Dopamine D₁A-Receptor Deficient Mice, Patrick Eugene Karper

Theses Digitization Project

The ability of the indirect dopamine agonist, amphetamine, to produce behavioral sensitization was assessed in adult D₁A-deficient and wild-type mice. It was originally predicted that : 1) dopamine (DA) D₁-like receptors are necessary for the occurrence of short- and long-term amphetamine-induced behavioral sensitization, 2) DA D₁-like receptors are necessary for environmental conditioning factors associated with amphetamine-induced behavioral sensitiazation, and 3) DA D₅ receptors are required for amphetamine-induced behavioral sensitization. Locomotor activity and sterotyped sniffing were assessed in each of three experiments.

Pennsylvania's Manufacturing Exemption To The Capital Stock Tax, When Limited To Manufacturing Within Pennsylvania, Violates The Commerce Clause Ppg Industries, Inc. V. Commonwealth, Craig Haller

Duquesne Law Review

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court held that the Pennsylvania capital stock tax statute allows a corporation operating in Pennsylvania to exempt only the value of capital stock related to manufacturing within Pennsylvania from the computation of its capital stock tax, and, under that interpretation, the manufacturing exemption facially discriminates against interstate commerce.

In 1992-93 winter use in YNP and GTNP exceeded this estimate.

Journeys: The Interpretation Of Modern Myth Through Art, Karen V. Dick Jan 2000

Journeys: The Interpretation Of Modern Myth Through Art, Karen V. Dick

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

"Journeys" primarily investigates the interpretation of one form of expression to another; i.e., the visual interpretation of myth through an in terms of the contemporary individual's psychological voyage. The basis for this study comes from the writings of noted scholar Joseph Campbell and others who place myth in the position of the inward, not the outward journey in the quest for human discovery. As Bill Moyers so eloquently states in The Power of Myth. "myths are the stories of our search through the ages for truth, for meaning, for significance. We all need to tell our story and to understand …

Lymphocyte Profiles In Blood And Tumors Of Arkansas Rous Sarcoma Regressor And Progressor Chickens, Brant Ward Jan 2000

Lymphocyte Profiles In Blood And Tumors Of Arkansas Rous Sarcoma Regressor And Progressor Chickens, Brant Ward

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

The Arkansas Rous Sarcoma Regressor (AR) and Progressor (AP) lines of chickens represent an excellent model to study immune responses to tumors. Both lines of chickens initially develop tumors when injected with Rous sarcoma viros (RSV) or with DNA coding for the RSV oncogene v-src (v-src DNA). AR chickens will eventually regress the tumors whereas AP chickens will allow the tumors to progress to a terminal stage. By using both v-src DNA and RSV for tumor induction, we were able to compare the immune response to tumor antigens alone and tumor antigens in combination with viral components, respectively. To study …

Rethinking The Progressive Estate And Gift Tax, Barbara Redman

Akron Tax Journal

This article will not review the philosophical arguments about the legitimacy of unearned wealth versus the right of a person to give as she pleases with her own accumulation. Rather, it will focus on a view of the tax not yet explored to any great extent in legal and political circles, but supported by recent economic research, and to argue, if not against the tax itself, at least against the progressive nature of the tax.

Modeling Δ15n Evolution: First Palaeoceanographic Applications In A Coastal Upwelling System, Xavier Giraud, Philippe Bertrand, Véronique Garçon, Isabelle Dadou Jan 2000

Modeling Δ15n Evolution: First Palaeoceanographic Applications In A Coastal Upwelling System, Xavier Giraud, Philippe Bertrand, Véronique Garçon, Isabelle Dadou

Journal of Marine Research

The δ15N signal in marine sediments appears to be a good palaeoceanographic tracer. It records biological processes in the water column and is transferred to and preserved in the sediments. Changes in forcing factors in upwelling systems may be recorded by δ15N. These forcing conditions can be of a biogeochemical nature, such as the initial isotopic signal of the nutrients or the trophic structure, or of a physical nature, such as wind stress, insolation, temperature or dynamic recycling. A simple nitrogen-based trophic chain model was used to follow the development of the nitrogen isotopic signal in …

Reefs And Coral Carpets In The Miocene Paratethys (Badenian, Leitha Limestone, Austria), Bernhard Riegl, W. E. Piller

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Biohermal (reefs) and biostromal (coral carpets) facies were studied in the Austrian Middle Miocene Leitha Limestone. In the Vienna Basin ("Fenk quarry") non-framebuilding and framebuilding biostromal coral communities were found. In the Styrian Basin, well developed patch reefs were observed besides coral carpets. In the Fenk quarry, 2 coral carpet types, four non-framework coral communities, and one bivalve/coral community were found. In "Retznei quarry" (Styrian Basin) patch reefs, basal corallinacean calcarenites were followed by a Ponies layer capped by marl, and the main reef-building higher diversity phase dominated by faviids ( Montastraea, Tarbellastraea). In the "Tittenbacher quarry" no internal …

Invasion Of The Information Snatchers: Creating Liability For Corporations With Vulnerable Computer Networks, 18 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 1019 (2000), Sarah Faulkner

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

Computer hackers are a serious threat to businesses and their customers, particularly if those businesses operate complex computer networks or operate as on-line businesses. However, now that corporate telecommunication networks are becoming more sophisticated, a company's phone system may also be susceptible to invasion. These telephonic hackers, called phone phreaks (and telecom hacking itself is known as phreaking), can cause large monetary losses as well. The question of who is liable for these losses, losses that are specifically caused by illegal activity, is the subject of this comment. This comment addresses the issue of liability for monetary losses in the …

The Case For A U.S. Privacy Commissioner: A Canadian Commissioner’S Perspective, 19 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 1 (2000), William S. Challis, Ann Cavoukian

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

The demands of social democratic government, the growth of electronic commerce, and the advance of technology have fueled the debate over internet privacy. Technology offers unprecedented opportunities but can also become tools of abuse. Debate in the United States centers around the conflicting interests of industry self-control versus government regulation. Technological and market-based solutions are ineffective because they lead to inadequate and inconsistent protection. Many user-driven privacy choices can impede the growth of consumer trust. Voluntarily adopted privacy policies are either extremely limited or easily circumvented with tracking technology that allows no consumer control over the collection of their personal …

Regulating The Free Flow Of Information: A Privacy Czar As The Ultimate Big Brother, 19 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 37 (2000), Jonathan M. Winer

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

The free flow if information is critical to open society. In the United States, the tradition of open information provides the intellectual oxygen for the development American freedom, knowledge, technology, and commerce. In contrast to the right to communicate and obtain information, privacy is not an established right in the United States, except with respect to physical trespass by the government and reproductive freedom. A federal privacy czar would necessarily limit the unauthorized collection, use, and dissemination of personal information. Privacy czars invariably become privacy advocates and take active stances to discourage the free flow of information about persons and …

Skeletal Architecture And Density Banding In Diploria Strigosa By X-Ray Computed Tomography, Kevin P. Helmle, Richard E. Dodge, R. A. Ketcham Jan 2000

Skeletal Architecture And Density Banding In Diploria Strigosa By X-Ray Computed Tomography, Kevin P. Helmle, Richard E. Dodge, R. A. Ketcham

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Density bands in corals have long been considered a valuable tool for reconstructing past environmental and climatic conditions. X-radiographs reveal density banding within a skeletal slab, but provide little information about the skeletal variability causing banding. The skeletal architecture of Diploria strigosa was analyzed by X-radiography, X-ray computed tomography, and image analysis to identify the specific skeletal elements responsible for density banding. Threedimensional skeletal reconstructions, density-band reconstructions, and skeletal animations were created to assess the apparent changes in skeletal structure associated with density banding. Measurements were made of the dissepiments, thecae, septa, and columellae to determine how element size related …
