Alfano, Amy O. Charkowski, Wen-Ling Deng, Jorge L. Badel, Tanja Petnicki- Ocwieja, Karin Van Dijk, Alan Collmer

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

The plant pathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas syringae is divided into pathovars differing in host specificity, with P. syringae pv. syringae (Psy) and P. syringae pv. tomato (Pto) representing particularly divergent pathovars. P. syringae hrp/hrc genes encode a type III protein secretion system that appears to translocate Avr and Hop effector proteins into plant cells. DNA sequence analysis of the hrp/hrc regions in Psy 61, Psy B728a, and Pto DC3000 has revealed a Hrp pathogenicity island (Pai) with a tripartite mosaic structure. The hrp/hrc gene cluster is conserved in all three strains and is flanked by a unique exchangeable …

The Earth Wisdom Of Male Initiation, Christopher M. Paddon Jan 2000

The Earth Wisdom Of Male Initiation, Christopher M. Paddon

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

All traditional societies have such a process-called initiation. For millennia, tribal and religious rites have supported and directed youth on their path to a healthy adulthood. Cultures worldwide have almost universally held rituals of transformation for their young. These traditional customs endured for centuries as part of a carefully structured and effective rite of passage into adulthood. Culture after culture believed if the young man was not introduced into "the Mysteries," he would not know what to do with his pain and would almost always abuse his power. Young men were thus initiated into the social and ecological heritage of …

Chapter 1 Drought As A Natural Hazard: Concepts And Definitions, Donald A. Wilhite Jan 2000

Chapter 1 Drought As A Natural Hazard: Concepts And Definitions, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Worldwide, economic damages attributed to natural disasters tripled from the 1960s (US$40 billion) to the 1980s (US$120 billion) (Domeisen 1995). The 1990s have witnessed a continued escalation of economic damages, reaching US$400 billion through 1996 (Carol-wicz 1996). Between 1992 and 1996, losses associated with natural disasters in the United States averaged US$54.2 billion per week (Carolwicz 1996). The economic, social, and environmental costs and losses associated with drought are also increasing dramatically, although it is difficult to quantify this trend precisely because of the lack of reliable historical estimates of losses. White and Haas estimated in 1975 that the average …

Chapter 18 Drought: Pervasive Impacts Of A Creeping Phenomenon, Donald A. Wilhite, Olga V. Vanyarkho

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Throughout human existence, drought has been a threat to the survival of societies. It has often been a trigger for massive human migrations, famines, and wars, altering the course of history itself. Today, as we prepare to enter the twenty-first century, drought continues to affect our global community in countless ways. In fact, we are still discovering the complex interrelationships between drought and society and grappling with response and mitigation strategies that will lessen impacts and therefore reduce vulnerability for future generations.

Chapter 35 Preparing For Drought: A Methodology, Donald A. Wilhite Jan 2000

Chapter 35 Preparing For Drought: A Methodology, Donald A. Wilhite

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Preparedness was defined in chapter 1 as predisaster activities designed to increase the level of readiness or improve operational and institutional capabilities for responding to an emergency. Drought preparedness has encountered increasing support from governments in recent years at various levels because of escalating impacts and the ineffectiveness and costs of emergency assistance programs that have little noticeable return. For example, between 1970 and 1984, state and federal government in Australia expended more than A$925 million on drought relief under the Natural Disaster Relief Arrangements (Wilhite 1986). The Republic of South Africa spent R2.5 billion for drought relief from the …

Managing Ascochyta Blight, Ian Pritchard Jan 2000

Managing Ascochyta Blight, Ian Pritchard

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The first outbreak of Ascocbyta blight in commercial chickpea crops in Western Australia was detected in July 1999. By the end of 1999, over 7C crops were found to be infected. Due to difficulty in detecting low levels of the disease, it is expected that many parts of the wheatbelt that now appear free of the disease may have a low level of infection. Ian Pritchard reports on the disease symptoms, its spread, and the management principles now in place to minimise the impact of Ascocbyta blight for the 2000 season.

Density-Dependent Effects On Microhabitat Selection And Activity Of Two Species Of Larval Ambystoma Salamanders, Jeanette M. Jaskula, Robert Brodman Jan 2000

Density-Dependent Effects On Microhabitat Selection And Activity Of Two Species Of Larval Ambystoma Salamanders, Jeanette M. Jaskula, Robert Brodman

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

To be able to distinguish unnatural amphibian declines from natural population fluctuations we need a better understanding of the mechanisms that affect amphibian community structure. Larval pond-breeding salamanders exhibit density-dependent effects on population parameters, but little is known of the effect of density on behaviors that mediate interactions. Two species, Amby1toma tigrinum (tiger salamander) and A. laterale (blue-spotted salamander), were evaluated in laboratory aquaria for intraspecific and interspecific interactions that affect microhabitat selection and activity. Microhabitat selection was studied by partitioning containers into microhabitats that either contained or lacked refuges, and movement was recorded over a hexagonal grid to determine …

"The Ghosts I Called I Can't Get Rid Of Now": The Keynes-Tinbergen-Friedman-Phillips Critique Of Keynesian Macroeconometrics, Robert Leeson

Business Book Chapters

This chapter offers a fresh perspective on the much publicised dispute between those followers of Keynes who presented econometric evidence in favour of a Phillips curve trade-off, and those monetarists who presented counter econometric evidence. Contrary to common perceptions, the collapse of the Keynesian Phillips curve was a vindication of a common critique of macroeconometric practices, which was jointly authored by John Maynard Keynes, Jan Tinbergen, Milton Friedman and A.W.H. 'Bill' Phillips. This analysis is informed by the usual sources, plus two sources which had been thought to be no longer in existence (Phillips' private papers and the London School …

Incorporating Uncertainty Into Management Models For Marine Mammals, Barbara L. Taylor, Paul R. Wade, Douglas P. De Master, Jay Barlow Jan 2000

Incorporating Uncertainty Into Management Models For Marine Mammals, Barbara L. Taylor, Paul R. Wade, Douglas P. De Master, Jay Barlow

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Good management models and good models for understanding biology differ in basic philosophy. Management models must facilitate management decisions despite large amounts of uncertainty about the managed populations. Such models must be based on parameters that can be estimated readily, must explicitly account for uncertainty, and should be simple to understand and implement. In contrast, biological models are designed to elucidate the workings of biology and should not be constrained by management concerns. We illustrate the need to incorporate uncertainty in management models by reviewing the inadequacy of using standard biological models to manage marine mammals in the United States. …

Including Preschool Children In The School Counseling Program : Classroom Recommendations For Counselors, Nancy A. Kriener Jan 2000

Including Preschool Children In The School Counseling Program : Classroom Recommendations For Counselors, Nancy A. Kriener

Graduate Research Papers

School counselors have long advocated including all children in their guidance programs. However, preschool children who attend public schools are often not a part of the school counseling program.

In light of the national trend emphasizing the importance of early childhood education, many public schools are assuming more responsibility for preschool education (Hohenshil & Hohenshil, 1989). As more and more preschools are being adopted by public schools, school counselors must be ready to extend their services to these children.
