Cyberpunk, Technoculture, And The Post-Biological Self, Ollivier Dyens Mar 2000

Cyberpunk, Technoculture, And The Post-Biological Self, Ollivier Dyens

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Ollivier Dyens presents in his article, "Cyberpunk, Technoculture, and the Post-Biological Self," the argument that because of technology's intrusion in our perception and understanding of the world and because of its constant production of impossible images of the human body, today's representation of that same body must be fundamentally re-evaluated. As one can see in works of science fiction -- films and literature alike -- such as Terminator 2 or Neuromancer, the body must now be perceived as a quantum-like pattern whose form and essence depend on the human or machine observer. The human body entangled in technology wavers between …

Literary Space In The Works Of Josie Boyle And Jeannette Armstrong, Angeline O’Neill, Josie Boyle Mar 2000

Literary Space In The Works Of Josie Boyle And Jeannette Armstrong, Angeline O’Neill, Josie Boyle

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their collaborative article, Angeline O'Neill and Josie Boyle discuss the interconnection between the spoken and written word and the manipulation of literary space, here defined as a continuum characterised by different modes of intellectual production and developed in a socio-historical context. In particular, the article focuses on the work of two Indigenous women storytellers, Josie Boyle of the Western Australian Wongi people, and Jeannette Armstrong of the North American Okanagan people. O'Neill examines the movement from oral to written speech as a process by which the word is essentially "reconstituted"; a process which is utilised by these women as …

Kenneth Starr: Diabolically Evil?, Jeanne L. Schroeder, David G. Carlson Mar 2000

Kenneth Starr: Diabolically Evil?, Jeanne L. Schroeder, David G. Carlson

Articles

The article explores the intersection of law, morality, and subjectivity through the lens of Slavoj Žižek's philosophical works, particularly in the context of the impeachment of President Clinton. It argues that the public's negative reaction to the impeachment was rooted in a fear of encountering "diabolical evil," a concept drawn from Kantian philosophy, where law and morality coincide perfectly. This form of evil is more terrifying than ordinary evil because it is committed without pathological motives, purely for the sake of duty.

A Preliminary Study On Oocyte Collection Using Transvaginal Ultrasound In Swamp Buffalo Heifers (Bubalas Bubalis), Akachart Promdireg, Mongkol Techakumphu, Nawapen Phutikanit, Ancharlie Na-Chiangmai

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The objective of the study was to investigate the possibility of collecting oocytes using transvaginal ultrasound-guidance, in swamp buffalo heifers, after gonadotropin stimulation. Five swamp buffalo heifers were given a single dose of 3,000 IU of Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin (PMSG) intramuscularly in order to stimulate the ovaries. Examination of the ovarian responses were carried out 48h after stimulation, the follicles were subsequently punctured and the oocytes examine under a stereomicroscope. The results of the ovarian response were 6.6 ± 1.1 follicles per animal with an average diameter of 7.1 ± 4.1 mm. The mean number of oocytes collected per …

Opening The Doors Of Communication And Guiding Parents Into Classrooms And Schools, Katy Anne Forsyth Mar 2000

Opening The Doors Of Communication And Guiding Parents Into Classrooms And Schools, Katy Anne Forsyth

Honors Theses

"A good parent is a national treasure and we need to make parents and families partners with their children's teacher and principals in the process of education," (Beyond the Classroom 308). This quote is the heart behind the contents of this book. For the love and concern that we as teachers have for the children in our lives, we owe it to them to help make their educational experience the most well rounded prosperous experience possible. To accomplish this, a partnership needs to be created by opening the doors of communication and guiding parents into classrooms and schools. As teachers, …

Wrongful Death: Oklahoma Supreme Court Replaces Viability Standard With "Live Birth" Standard, Fatma Marouf Mar 2000

Wrongful Death: Oklahoma Supreme Court Replaces Viability Standard With "Live Birth" Standard, Fatma Marouf

Faculty Scholarship

Since the United States Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade, the line of viability for human fetuses has been consistently pushed back to earlier and earlier gestational ages. Granting "person" status to a nonviable fetus, even if only for purposes of the wrongful death statute, as the Oklahoma Supreme Court did in Nealis v. Baird, represents an important expansion of fetal rights. Although the court explicitly limited its decision to nonviable fetuses born alive, Judge Opala conceded that much of his opinion could apply equally to stillborn fetuses. The court's decision in Nealis raises important questions about …

Jembrana Disease Virus Tat Can Regulate Human Immunodeficiency Virus (Hiv) Long Terminal Repeat-Directed Gene Expression And Can Substitute For Hiv Tat In Viral Replication, Hexin Chen, Jun He, Steven Fong, Graham Wilcox, Charles Wood Mar 2000

Jembrana Disease Virus Tat Can Regulate Human Immunodeficiency Virus (Hiv) Long Terminal Repeat-Directed Gene Expression And Can Substitute For Hiv Tat In Viral Replication, Hexin Chen, Jun He, Steven Fong, Graham Wilcox, Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Jembrana disease virus (JDV) is a bovine lentivirus genetically similar to bovine immunodeficiency virus; it causes an acute and sometimes fatal disease in infected animals. This virus carries a very potent Tat that can strongly activate not only its own long terminal repeat (LTR) but also the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) LTR. In contrast, HIV Tat cannot reciprocally activate the JDV LTR (H. Chen, G. E. Wilcox, G. Kertayadnya, and C. Wood, J. Virol. 73:658–666, 1999). This indicates that in transactivation JDV Tat may utilize a mechanism similar to but not the same as that of the HIV Tat. To …

Cardiac Markers For Assessing The Acute Coronary Syndromes. A Focus On Cardiac Troponins, Salam M. Saadeddin, Moh’D A. Habbab, Gordon A. Ferns

Saudi Medical Journal

Markers of myocardial injury will continue to play an essential role in the assessment and management of patients presenting within the spectrum of acute coronary syndromes, a term representing the continuum of acute myocardial ischemia ranging from angina through Q-wave myocardial infarction. Coronary artery lesion instability can be detected by markers of plaque inflammation and disruption, platelets reactivity, and thrombosis. When myocardial injury occurs with severe impairment of coronary blood flow, several markers are released from the damaged myocyte. For many years, creatine kinase-MB isoenzyme has been the conventional marker for myocardial infarction. Despite its inadequate sensitivity and specificity for …

Malignant peritoneal mesotheliomas are rare tumors arising from the peritoneal surface. We report a 53 year old, non-asbestos exposed Saudi male who presented with exudative ascites. The diagnosis was obtained from laparoscopic biopsy. To the best of our knowledge this entity has not been described in the Saudi community. The aim is to increase the awareness among the medical community about this rare entity.

The Pl(A2) Polymorphism Of Integrin Beta(3) Enhances Outside-In Signaling And Adhesive Functions., K Vinod Vijayan, Pascal J. Goldschmidt-Clermont, Christine Roos, Paul F. Bray Mar 2000

The Pl(A2) Polymorphism Of Integrin Beta(3) Enhances Outside-In Signaling And Adhesive Functions., K Vinod Vijayan, Pascal J. Goldschmidt-Clermont, Christine Roos, Paul F. Bray

Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research

Genetic factors are believed to influence the development of arterial thromboses. Because integrin alpha(IIb)beta(3) plays a crucial role in thrombus formation, we analyzed receptor adhesive properties using Chinese hamster ovary and human kidney embryonal 293 cells overexpressing the Pl(A1) or Pl(A2) polymorphic forms of alpha(IIb)beta(3). Soluble fibrinogen binding was no different between Pl(A1) and Pl(A2) cells, either in a resting state or when alpha(IIb)beta(3) was activated with anti-LIBS6. Pl(A1) and Pl(A2) cells bound equivalently to immobilized fibronectin. In contrast, significantly more Pl(A2) cells bound to immobilized fibrinogen in an alpha(IIb)beta(3)-dependent manner than did Pl(A1) cells. Disruption of the actin cytoskeleton …

Serum Lipid Response To N-3 Fatty Acid Enriched Eggs In Persons With Hypercholesterolemia, Nancy M. Lewis, Kim Schalch, Sheila E. Scheideler Mar 2000

Serum Lipid Response To N-3 Fatty Acid Enriched Eggs In Persons With Hypercholesterolemia, Nancy M. Lewis, Kim Schalch, Sheila E. Scheideler

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Consumption of long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) is low among certain population subgroups in the United States, especially in people living in Midwestern states and those who dislike fish. Therefore, there is a need to identify acceptable food sources of n-3 PUFA. Vegetable oils, such as canola and soy, provide some n-3 fatty acids. However, these sources are high in n-6 fatty acids and there is concern that they may have detrimental side effects. Eggs enriched in n-3 PUFA can be produced by incorporating sources of these fatty acids into poultry rations. In acceptability studies, US consumers responded …

A Comparative Analysis Of Cockpit Display Development Tools, Matthew J. Gebhardt Mar 2000

A Comparative Analysis Of Cockpit Display Development Tools, Matthew J. Gebhardt

Theses and Dissertations

Currently, no standard methodology exists that enables cockpit display engineers to evaluate software tools used in the development of graphical cockpit displays. Furthermore, little research has been accomplished in comparing current software development tools with traditional hand-coded methods, This research effort discusses a framework for analyzing cockpit display software development tools and follows through with a detailed analysis comparing today's hand-coding standard, OpenGL, with two of today's cockpit display software development suites, Virtual Application Prototyping System (VAPS) and Display Editor. The comparison exploits the analysis framework establishing the advantages and disadvantages of the three software development suites. The analysis framework …

Los Coquís De Puerto Rico: Su Historia Natural Y Conservación, Rafael O. De Sá Mar 2000

Los Coquís De Puerto Rico: Su Historia Natural Y Conservación, Rafael O. De Sá

Biology Faculty Publications

As the title indicates, this well-illustrated (115 photographs and 76 illustrations) book summarizes the current knowledge about the natural history of the 16 species of Eleutherodactylus inhabiting Puerto Rico. The book consists of eight chapters (including the epilogue) and it is clearly stated that it was written to serve both the scientific community and the nonspecialist reader. The goal of bridging these two audiences is ambitious and usually difficult; however, the book has probably accomplished this goal. The technical reader, i.e., students and professional herpetologists, will find a good summary of data and enough information to continue reading with interest. …

Treaty-Making And The Nation: The Historical Foundations Of The Nationalist Conception Of The Treaty Power, David M. Golove Mar 2000

Treaty-Making And The Nation: The Historical Foundations Of The Nationalist Conception Of The Treaty Power, David M. Golove

Michigan Law Review

Characteristic of the most enduring constitutional controversies is a clash between fundamental but ultimately irreconcilable principles. Unable to synthesize opposing precepts, we visit and revisit certain issues in an endless cycle. Each generation marches forward heedless, and sometimes only dimly aware, of how many times the battle has already been fought. Even the peace of exhaustion achieves only a temporary respite. The abiding controversy over the relationship between the treaty power of the national government and the legislative powers of the states is paradigmatic in this respect. Beginning as early as in the first debate over ratification of the Articles …

Researching Psychotherapy, The Importance Of The Client's View: A Methodological Challenge, Neil Scott Gordon Mar 2000

Researching Psychotherapy, The Importance Of The Client's View: A Methodological Challenge, Neil Scott Gordon

The Qualitative Report

This paper argues that research approaches which are aimed at developing our understanding of psychotherapy which fail to address the client's interpretation of events will only provide a limited picture of its true nature. The discussion explores the philosophical underpinnings of research in this area through analysing contemporary debates and controversies. The difficulties of defining the term "psychotherapy" are acknowledged while highlighting the centrality of the concept of relationship in current definitions. The question "What is psychotherapy?" is further addressed by offering a brief overview of the theoretical assumptions which influence some current approaches to clinical work. Attention is also …

Sightseeing In Paris With Baudelaire And Breton, Benton Jay Komins Mar 2000

Sightseeing In Paris With Baudelaire And Breton, Benton Jay Komins

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Sightseeing in Paris with Baudelaire and Breton," Benton Jay Komins discusses the tensions between Charles Baudelaire's acts of modern appropriation and André Breton's imaginative seizing of the démodé. While Breton roams the Parisian cityscape with the same aspect of creative gazing as Charles Baudelaire's nineteenth-century dandy, the objects and experiences that he privileges are different from the dandy's fashionable marvels. In texts such as Nadja passé artifacts captivate Breton. Between Baudelaire's revelling in the elegant modern possibilities of dandysme and Breton's imaginative seizing of démodé objects, something significant has occurred: Twentieth-century urbanites like Breton no longer celebrate …

Effects Of Fluoranthene And Ambient Oxygen Levels On Survival And Metabolism In Three Sibling Species Of Capitella (Polychaeta), Inez Linke-Gamenick, Bent Vismann, Valery E. Forbes Mar 2000

Effects Of Fluoranthene And Ambient Oxygen Levels On Survival And Metabolism In Three Sibling Species Of Capitella (Polychaeta), Inez Linke-Gamenick, Bent Vismann, Valery E. Forbes

Valery Forbes Publications

The successful persistence of Capitella spp. in disturbed and/or oil-polluted habitats is widely known, but demographic adaptations might be only part of the explanation and little is known about differences among species. The present study investigates ecophysiological effects of the common PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) fluoranthene (FLU) on juvenile and adult survival, comparing 3 sibling species of Capitella (Polychaeta; Capitellidae). Subsequently, the influence of FLU on the aerobic and anaerobic metabolism in the most 'sensitive' species, Capitella sp. S, and most 'tolerant' species, Capitella sp. I, was assessed. Oxygen uptake and internal succinate concentration (an indicator of anaerobic metabolism) were …
