Sexuality, Textuality: The Cultural Work Of Plagiarism, Rebecca Moore Howard Mar 2000

Sexuality, Textuality: The Cultural Work Of Plagiarism, Rebecca Moore Howard

Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition - All Scholarship

Considers how plagiarism continues to elude definition because teachers cannot possibly formulate and act on a definition of plagiarism that articulates both its textual and sexual work. Discusses linking sexual property to textual transgression and rejecting metaphors in relationship to rejecting plagiarism. Suggests educators stop using the term plagiarism altogether and replace it with "fraud," "insufficient citation," and "excessive repetition."

Parturition Hormone In The Tsetse Glossina Morsitans: Activity In Reproductive Tissues From Other Species And Response Of Tsetse To Identified Neuropeptides And Other Neuroactive Compounds, Jan Žďárek, Ronald J. Nachman, David L. Denlinger Mar 2000

Denlinger

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Parturition hormone (PH) activity is present not only in the uterus of the tsetse Glossina morsitans but also in the oviducts of Bombyx mori and Schistocerca gregaria, as well as the ejaculatory duct of S. gregaria males. Activity thus appears to be present in the reproductive ducts of diverse insect taxa. To determine whether any the common insect neuropeptides are capable of mimicking the effect of PH, 35 identified neuropeptides and analogs were evaluated for PH activity. Modest PH activity was observed for only high doses of proctolin and a pyrokinin analog, thus suggesting that PH is unlikely to be …

The Enemy Within: The Demonization Of Poor Women, Ruth Sidel Mar 2000

The Enemy Within: The Demonization Of Poor Women, Ruth Sidel

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The denigration and demonization of poor women was central to the effort to repeal Aid to Families with Dependent Children by the passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996. The utilization of negative stereotypes involving race, class and gender effectively marginalized impoverished women and their children, who were blamed for virtually all of the social problems of the United States during the 1990s. Despite the massive concentration of wealth and income in the hands of the wealthiest Americans and the ever-widening gap between rich and poor, the United States continues to ignore the need for …

Modeling The Growth Dynamics Of Antarctic Krill Euphausia Superba, Eileen E. Hofmann, Cathy M. Lascara Mar 2000

Modeling The Growth Dynamics Of Antarctic Krill Euphausia Superba, Eileen E. Hofmann, Cathy M. Lascara

CCPO Publications

A time-dependent, size-structured, bioenergetically based model was developed to examine the growth dynamics of Antarctic krill Euphausia superba 2 to 60 mm in size. The metabolic processes included in the model are ingestion, a baseline respiration, respiratory losses due to feeding and digestion, and an activity-based respiration factor. The total of these processes, net production, was used as the basis for determining the growth or shrinkage of individuals. Size-dependent parameterizations for the metabolic processes were constructed from field and laboratory measurements. Environmental effects were included through time series of pelagic phytoplankton concentration that were derived from data sets collected west …

Game And Fish Licenses, Permits, And Stamps Generally: Add Provisions Allowing Department Of Natural Resources To Issue Trapping And Hunting Permits Under Circumstances Where Such Action Is Otherwise Prohibited By Law; Add Requirement For Department Of Natural Resources To Specify The Conditions Where It Deems Such Permits Necessary; Provide An Exception For Such Permits, Kristin Gee

Georgia State University Law Review

The Act allows the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to issue permits to trap, transport and release, or kill wildlife and feral hogs when such action is otherwise prohibited by law. The law allows removal of white-tailed deer from airport property, only in the interest of public safety. With respect to fur-bearing animals, the DNR must approve and implement a bona fide wildlife management plan, and with respect to feral hogs, DNR-approved activities must comply with the Georgia Department of Agriculture's rules and regulations. The DNR must prescribe all methods and details of animal control. Furthermore, the DNR cannot issue …

Teaching Of Pharmacology In The Asia-Pacific Region With Special Reference To Hong Kong, Gyrus R. Kumana

Journal of Medical Education

Traditionally, medicinal substances were derived from herbs and other'naturalsubstances, and often had an ancient history steeped in folklore, whereas modern pharmacological sciences have always been closely associated with medical schools.Thedevelopment of academic pharmacology in Hong Kong was no exception. Thus, theHong Kong College of Medicine for the Chinese was founded in 1887 and after severalmoves, evolved into the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong.Pharmacology as a separate discipline was only introduced in 1965 and followed a traditional curriculum with numerous didactic lectures and practical classes entailing animal experimentation (based on the course in Singapore).A complex array of written and practicalexams tested learning in …

Pilgrimage To Springfield: A British Writer's Look At Lincoln And Modern America, Ian Crowe

Civil War Book Review

In war: resolution. In defeat: defiance. In victory: magnanimity. In peace: goodwill." If Jan Morris has captured her subject with any degree of accuracy, those words by Sir Winston Churchill might aptly have draped Lincoln's funeral train as it snaked its way to Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln is th....

Plant Community Patterns On Upland Prairie In The Eastern Nebraska Sandhills, Walter H. Schacht, Jerry D. Volesky, Dennis Bauer, Alexander Smart, Eric Mousel Mar 2000

Plant Community Patterns On Upland Prairie In The Eastern Nebraska Sandhills, Walter H. Schacht, Jerry D. Volesky, Dennis Bauer, Alexander Smart, Eric Mousel

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Topography is an important factor in determining vegetation patterns in grasslands. We collected frequency of occurrence data from transects on dune tops, south-facing slopes, north-facing slopes, and interdunal valleys in the eastern Sandhills of Nebraska to determine the effect of topographical position on plant species composition. We used canonical discriminant analysis to separate the four topographical positions based on frequency of occurrence of the 18 principal planttaxa. Topographic position played an important role in plant distribution on upland prairie with interdunal transects strongly separated from transects on other topographical positions. Bluegrasses (Poa L. spp.), switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), …

Techniques For Forecasting The Cessation Of Lightning At Cape Canaveral Air Station And The Kennedy Space Center, Michael W. Holmes

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this research effort is directed toward identifying new methods of forecasting the cessation of lightning along the Central Atlantic Coast of Florida. Cloud-to-ground lightning flashes place Air Force (AF) personnel and assets at risk almost daily at this location. Providing a more accurate method of forecasting the cessation of lightning would allow for safer and more efficient execution of AF operations. A data set consisting of 40 thunderstorm cases was identified within a 90 nautical miles (nmi) region surrounding the Melbourne, Florida WSR-88D (KMLB) site. Each case falls between the months of May and September and the …

Using Simulation To Model An Army Recruiting Station With Seasonality Effects, David C. Longhorn Mar 2000

Using Simulation To Model An Army Recruiting Station With Seasonality Effects, David C. Longhorn

Theses and Dissertations

One of the toughest jobs in the Army is that of the recruiter. Recruiters are tasked with the awesome job of convincing young men and women to lay down their lives and freedoms for their country, and oftentimes for less money than can be earned in the safer environment of America's booming economy. Recruiters face enormous pressure from commanders to meet the mandated Army manning levels set each year by Congress. As the Army begins the 21st century, it is faced with having to support an increasing number of deployments with fewer soldiers. Soldiers face long and difficult days with …

Toxicity Of Tolyltriazole To Gram-Positive Coccus Microorganisms, Heather L. Mitchell Mar 2000

Toxicity Of Tolyltriazole To Gram-Positive Coccus Microorganisms, Heather L. Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

Maintaining safe flight operations, military and civilian, in cold weather requires the use of de-icing fluids. Glycols, the primary component of de-icers, have been extensively studied. Water and additives such as corrosion inhibitors and other performance enhancing chemicals make up the remaining portion of de-icing fluids. Little research has been conducted on the additives, but several are suspected toxins to microorganisms, therefore the EPA regulates the disposal of spent de-icing fluids. Tolyltriazole, a corrosion inhibitor found in de-icing fluids, is a suspected human carcinogen. It is also known to be moderately toxic to microorganisms based on Microtox results. The purpose …

A Component Based Approach To Agent Specification, David J. Robinson Mar 2000

A Component Based Approach To Agent Specification, David J. Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force, as well as all of industry, is currently faced with the problem of having to produce larger and more complex software systems that run efficiently and reliably as well as being extensible and maintainable. This research addresses this problem by developing a knowledge representation language that can be used to unambiguously specify and design software systems in a verifiable, efficient, and understandable manner. The language is a combination of object-oriented and component-based methodologies and makes use of both graphics and text to represent information. Although designed for the development of any type of software system, the language …

A Pharmacokinetic Study Of The Effects Of Stress On Chemical Exposure, Sierra H. Suhajda Mar 2000

A Pharmacokinetic Study Of The Effects Of Stress On Chemical Exposure, Sierra H. Suhajda

Theses and Dissertations

Following the Gulf War there were many concerns raised about human exposure to the combination of chemicals and stress. Stress causes several changes in basic functions of a human body, from breathing and blood flow changes to hormonal and enzyme changes, and increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier. Each of these changes can strongly influence chemical uptake, distribution, and accumulation in the body. The purpose of this thesis was to model and predict the changes that will occur when stress is combined with chemical exposure. Physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling is one tool that can be used to visualize, predict, and …

Periradicular Response Of Immunodeficient Rats To Mechanical Pulpal Exposure, James E. Stich Mar 2000

Periradicular Response Of Immunodeficient Rats To Mechanical Pulpal Exposure, James E. Stich

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Periradicular lesions develop as a result of the interaction between root canal irritants and the immune system. The purpose of this study was to investigate the periradicular response of immunodeficient rats to their oral flora. Twenty Sprague-Dawley rats received a total body irradiation dose of 750 cGy one week prior to the investigation. The pulps of the mandibular first molars of these animals and six nonirradiated rats were exposed mechanically with a ½ round bur and left open to the oral cavity. Additional irradiation (350 cGy) was administered bi-weekly to maintain immunosuppression. Periradicular specimens were obtained after two and four …

In Vitro And In Vivo Studies On Bone Formation, Charmaine Richman Mar 2000

In Vitro And In Vivo Studies On Bone Formation, Charmaine Richman

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The research focus of this dissertation deals with two major issues relevant to osteoporosis, the most common metabolic bone disease. These two aspects are: 1) mechanisms that are involved in the regulation of peak bone density, and 2) evaluation of the in vivo effects of Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein-5 (IGFBP-5) as a potential means to treat osteoporosis.

The first study compared two strains of inbred mice, one with high bone density and one with low bone density, to determine when and to what extent bone density accumulation during postnatal and pubertal growth contributed to the observed differences in bone …
