How Well Does Your Irrigation Canal Hold Water?, Robert Hill Mar 2000

How Well Does Your Irrigation Canal Hold Water?, Robert Hill

All Current Publications

Irrigation canals placed in native soil or lined with earth can have seepage water losses varying from 20 percent to more than 50 percent. Well designed, new compacted earth lined canals can have reduced seepage losses similar to concrete lined channels. However, consistent and regular maintenance is required to keep seepage losses low. Older concrete lined canals with deteriorated joints and frost heave or settled sections may also have high seepage losses and require rehabilitating.

Managing Temporal Data In A Comprehensive Modeling Environment, Norman L. Jones, E. James Nelson, Colby T. Manwaring Mar 2000

Managing Temporal Data In A Comprehensive Modeling Environment, Norman L. Jones, E. James Nelson, Colby T. Manwaring

Faculty Publications

Numerous graphical pre- and post-processors have been developed for numerical modeling. Many of these systems support numerical models that can be used for both steady state and transient simulations. Dealing with transient data can be particularly difficult in such an environment due to the differing time scales and units associated with transient field data and boundary conditions. A data model and a set of functions are presented in this paper as a simple, yet powerful strategy for managing temporal data in a comprehensive modeling environment. The strategy makes it possible to seamlessly integrate multiple types of transient data and convert …

Evil I, Jason Donati Mar 2000

Evil I, Jason Donati

Theses

For the first time, my motivation in the creation of animation wasn't simply to fulfill a class assignment or get a job. Although these issues were still part of the equation, they were not the reason for spending countless hours hunched over and squinting at a computer monitor. I had reached a point with my previous film, "Head Quarters"(Donati, 1), where I no longer felt as if I had something to prove. I was secure with my skills as a computer animator, and could see beyond the technical aspects of my craft focusing more on a personal style and voice. …

Distance learning is not a new subject, but it recently has come in vogue again. With the advent of new educational and training technologies and the need to meet the needs of learners in a fast-paced world, distance learning is becoming a necessity. In its best sense, it can help educate more people anywhere at any time. Our renewed interest in distance learning has the potential to change public perception of education and its ongoing importance throughout our lives. In Part I, an overview of the distance learning is given, from the concept to the various tools. The tools and …

The Paradox Of Family Privacy, David D. Meyer Mar 2000

The Paradox Of Family Privacy, David D. Meyer

Vanderbilt Law Review

When it comes to the nature of the Constitution's protection for freedom of choice in matters relating to family life, there is wide agreement on perhaps only two points: first, that the subject raises "questions of unsurpassed significance in th[e] Court's interpretation of the Constitution,"' and, second, that the Court's halting passes at these questions have left its family privacy doctrine in a state of unsurpassed disarray. The significance of the questions is transparent. A comprehensive account of the subject calls for answers to the most basic and intractable problems of judicial review, answers that might justify the judiciary's role …

Single-Channel Properties In Endoplasmic Reticulum Membrane Of Recombinant Type 3 Inositol Trisphosphate Receptor., D O Mak, S Mcbride, V Raghuram, Y Yue, Suresh K. Joseph, J K Foskett Mar 2000

Single-Channel Properties In Endoplasmic Reticulum Membrane Of Recombinant Type 3 Inositol Trisphosphate Receptor., D O Mak, S Mcbride, V Raghuram, Y Yue, Suresh K. Joseph, J K Foskett

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

The inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor (InsP(3)R) is an intracellular Ca(2+)-release channel localized in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) with a central role in complex Ca(2+) signaling in most cell types. A family of InsP(3)Rs encoded by several genes has been identified with different primary sequences, subcellular locations, variable ratios of expression, and heteromultimer formation. This diversity suggests that cells require distinct InsP(3)Rs, but the functional correlates of this diversity are largely unknown. Lacking are single-channel recordings of the recombinant type 3 receptor (InsP(3)R-3), a widely expressed isoform also implicated in plasma membrane Ca(2+) influx and apoptosis. Here, we describe functional expression and single-channel …

Chromate Dissociation From Primer Paint In Simulated Lung Fluid, Tiffany J. R. Morgan Mar 2000

Chromate Dissociation From Primer Paint In Simulated Lung Fluid, Tiffany J. R. Morgan

Theses and Dissertations

OSHA has proposed a new strontium chromate exposure standard that would potentially cause Air Force paint facilities to be in violation of the proposed standard if adopted. This proposed reduction make the continued use of chromate containing primer paints very difficult. There is currently no acceptable replacements for chromate containing primer paints on AF aircraft. This study suggests that paint particles with chromate bound in primer paint may be unavailable for bodily absorption if inhaled and a reduced standard for painting applications may be unnecessary. Primer paint overspray was collected into simulated lung fluid (SLF) and allowed 6 hr, 24 …

Simulations Of Flowing Supercritical N-Decane, Jeffery T. Thornburg Mar 2000

Simulations Of Flowing Supercritical N-Decane, Jeffery T. Thornburg

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Force is interested in the research of supercritical jet and rocket fuels, as well as the effects of thermally induced fuel degradation. As future flight vehicles travel at ever increasing Mach numbers, greater heat loads will be imposed upon the fuel. The primary purpose of this study is to develop a computational model for predicting fuel decomposition and bulk fuel temperatures in a stimulated heated flow reactor. The System for Thermal Diagnostic Studies (STDS), located in the Air Force Research Laboratory's Fuels Branch, is used to analyze fuels under supercritical temperatures and pressures. Computational simulations of the STDS …

Hierarchical Interactive Theater Model (Hitm): An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Strategic Effects And Ooda Loops, Richard K. Bullock Mar 2000

Hierarchical Interactive Theater Model (Hitm): An Investigation Into The Relationship Between Strategic Effects And Ooda Loops, Richard K. Bullock

Theses and Dissertations

Airpower's strength lies in being able to quickly strike the enemy directly where they are vulnerable while being unhampered by geography and surface forces. Airpower theory suggests the effects of these strikes propagate throughout an opponent1s military system yielding catastrophic output or strategic effects. Despite this theory being a cornerstone of US Air Force doctrine, current Air Force models do not seem to capture airpower's inherent strength. Since these models are used to support budgetary decision making, the United States may not be funding the airpower capability it needs.

Design And Validation Of An Accurate Gps Signal And Receiver Truth Model For Comparing Advanced Receiver Processing Techniques, Phillip Martin Corbell Mar 2000

Design And Validation Of An Accurate Gps Signal And Receiver Truth Model For Comparing Advanced Receiver Processing Techniques, Phillip Martin Corbell

Theses and Dissertations

Recent increases in the computational power of computers and digital signal processors have made possible new, novel signal tracking techniques in GPS receivers. One such technique is known as Direct Correlators Output Processing (DCOP). This technique replaces individual traditional tracking loops with a single Kalman Filter, which jointly processes the received signals while exploiting their correlated noises. DCOP is innovative in its potential to replace the tried and true classical signal tracking loops. It is also an enabling technology for ultra-tightly coupled GPS/INS (Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System). Potential benefits of these new tracking techniques include an order-of-magnitude improvement in …

Feature Selection For Predicting Pilot Mental Workload, Julia A. East Mar 2000

Feature Selection For Predicting Pilot Mental Workload, Julia A. East

Theses and Dissertations

Advances in technology have the cockpits of the aircraft in the Air Force inventory increasingly complex. Consequently, mental demands on the pilot have risen. In some cases, mental demands were so overwhelming that pilots have forgotten basic flying techniques, such as G-straining maneuvers. The results have been fatal. Recent research in this area has involved collecting psychophysiological features, such as electroencephalography (EEG), heart, eye and respiration measures, in an attempt to identify pilot mental workload. This thesis focuses on feature selection and reduction of the psycophysiological features and subsequent classification of pilot mental workload on multiple subjects over multiple days. …

Three-Dimensional Data Visualization Of Electronic Military Intelligence Using The Project Broadsword System, Michael L. Goeringer Mar 2000

Three-Dimensional Data Visualization Of Electronic Military Intelligence Using The Project Broadsword System, Michael L. Goeringer

Theses and Dissertations

Today's military electronic infrastructure solves many problems while creating others. Using computers, battlefield and global awareness is brought to bear through the near real-time linking of sensor platforms from around the globe. These intelligence networks produce vast amounts of data that must be parsed, interpreted, digested and stored by information gathering systems. As the amount of intelligence data continues to increase, these text-based systems become cumbersome and inadequate. To ensure vital information is not overlooked or discovered too late, other forms of intelligence product management and data navigation need to be investigated. This thesis explores procedures for enhancing the capabilities …

Residents Informing The Planning Process: Pleasant Valley And Its Natural Resources, Steve Olson, Ian Simpson, Jay Sugnet, Tim Williams, Alison Young Mar 2000

Residents Informing The Planning Process: Pleasant Valley And Its Natural Resources, Steve Olson, Ian Simpson, Jay Sugnet, Tim Williams, Alison Young

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

As a society, we are slowly learning the importance of the interaction between the natural and built environments. We need a new model for planning and development that gives more weight to natural resource considerations than has traditionally occurred in the development process.

An opportunity exists in Pleasant Valley to bring focus to natural resources in future planning efforts by tapping into the local knowledge of residents who know and love the land. Because the area will begin to urbanize in the near future, it is necessary to learn about the area before development occurs or people move away. The …

The Genus Maera (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Melitidae) From Bermuda, Sandro Ruffo, Traudl Krapp, Michael F. Gable Feb 2000

The Genus Maera (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Melitidae) From Bermuda, Sandro Ruffo, Traudl Krapp, Michael F. Gable

Postilla

Traditionally, the Bermudian amphipod fauna has included three species of Maera. After examining collections that span more than 10 years, we retain one species, M. tinkerensis; report a second species, M. quadrimana, as a verified record for the Atlantic; and describe four new species: M. ceres, M. miranda, M. ariel, and M. caliban. Discussion of M. quadrimana sensu lato, M. pacifica and M. rathbunae clarifies their taxonomic status and their relationship to the Bermudian fauna. Maera tinkerensis resides within the grossimana complex of species, and the other five species reside within the quadrimana complex. The zoogeographical implications of these morphological "complex" …
