Winter Field Report, December 1999 To February 2000, W. Ross Silcock

Nebraska Bird Review

This rather mild season stood out for its wintering waterfowl, most obviously at Keystone L, where Stephen Dinsmore counted an amazing 22 species of waterfowl on 29 January. Check the species accounts for the incredible wintering numbers; species were topped by Nebraska's first Tufted Duck, and assorted other goodies, such as 5 Barrow's Goldeneyes, Waterfowl, loons, and grebes also rewrote the midwinter record book, including no fewer than 3 Red-necked Grebes, Some interesting wintering birds also appeared at Harlan Co Res,

Other interesting winter records, some no doubt due to the mild fall, included Greater Yellowlegs at two locations, Franklin's …

The Flight Song Display Of The Cassin's Sparrow: Form And Possible Function, James T. Anderson, Warren C. Conway

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

We studied the flight song display behavior of male Cassin's Span-ows (Aimophila cassinii) during the early breeding season. Data were collected on randomly selected male Cassin's Span-ows occun-ing in a mixed honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa )-grassland in the Southern High Plains of West Texas. Cassin's Span-ows performed 100% of perched songs and initiated 97.8% of the flight song displays from the upper parts of mesquite trees. When performing flight song displays Cassin's Span-ows flew an average distance of 8.1 mat an average height of 3.6 m, and rotated an average of 96° from take-off to -landing. Males were more likely …

Wa Agricultural Growth And The State Economy Research Report Volume 2, Nazrul Islam, Helal Ahammad Mar 2000

Wa Agricultural Growth And The State Economy Research Report Volume 2, Nazrul Islam, Helal Ahammad

Research Reports

The impact of state and national policies on the Western Australian (WA) agriculture can not be assessed realistically unless the distinctive characteristics of WA agriculture are taken into account. The objective of this paper is to develop and document an economic information base for WA agriculture by identifying and exploring the main characteristics of its production systems. The study reveals that agriculture plays a more important role in WA than in the rest of Australia (ROA). The share of WA in the national gross value of agricultural production and exports is much higher than her share in the national gross …

The Catholic School: Avenue To Authenticity, Denis Mclaughlin Mar 2000

The Catholic School: Avenue To Authenticity, Denis Mclaughlin

Journal of Catholic Education

A document from the Vatican’s Congregation for Catholic Education has confirmed that the fundamental purpose of Catholic schools is to create an educational environment promoting authentic humanity. This position has its basis in a Catholic concept of personhood, which underpins the thrust of the 1998 Roman document, The Catholic School on the Threshold of the Third Millennium. This article outlines a philosophical framework for Catholic education and establishes a comprehensive theological foundation for community living. Education, the life of faith, and the common good all come under the rubric of authentic humanity.

The Technical And Economic Feasibility Of Constructing An Artificial Wetland For Burra-Burra Creek In Ducktown Tennessee, Ileana M. Speer Mar 2000

The Technical And Economic Feasibility Of Constructing An Artificial Wetland For Burra-Burra Creek In Ducktown Tennessee, Ileana M. Speer

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The Copper Hill Basin area in Polk County, Tennessee has been severely impacted by more than a century of mining. The water found in the streams in this area is polluted with dissolved metals and sulfates. Burra-Burra Creek is one of the various waterways impacted and is located within the 130 km2 area of deserted mines in the Copper Basin. This stream is fed from runoff and mine seepage; the stream is acidic and the metal concentration is high in comparison to the concentrations in other streams in the immediate area. The use of constructed wetlands to treat acidic mine …

Georgia State University Law Review

The Act, called the Animal Protection Act, prohibits obstructing the Commissioner of Agriculture or his or her agents, or animal control officers, in the perfection of their duties. The Act also changes a number of sections of the Georgia Code to increase the severity of punishment for animal cruelty offenses by providing that a second animal cruelty offense that results in the animals death will be a misdemeanor of high and aggravated nature and will incur a more sever penalty. Future, the Act creates the felony offense of aggravated cruelty to animals (an act which makes a part of the …

A Summer Survey Of The Birds At Two Eastern Nebraska Wetlands, Kristine T. Phipps Mar 2000

A Summer Survey Of The Birds At Two Eastern Nebraska Wetlands, Kristine T. Phipps

Biology Faculty Publications

This study compares the avian species diversity at two eastern Nebraska wetlands that differ in their relative isolation from an urban environment. Birds were surveyed by the point Count method twice weekly at each site during June of 1998. Diversity was measured using species richness and species evenness. The percentage of bird species observed that depend on wetlands for breeding was also compared. Results suggest that both species richness and evenness, as determined by the Shannon-Wiener index, were higher at the wetland located in a network of other marsh areas and agricultural land than at the suburban wetland. Immigration of …

Embryo And Oocyte Collection In Thai Swamp Buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis) After Superovulation, Mongkol Techakumphu, Yant Sukwong, Malee Apimeteetumrong, Siriwat Intaramongkol, Jintana Intaramongkol

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Six-day embryos were recovered from 25 swamp buffalo cows treated with pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (2,500 iu PMSG, n=9) and follicle stimulating hormone (280 mg, n=12 and 400 mg FSH, n=4). Two techniques, non surgical collection from live animals and direct flushing after slaughter were compared. The oocytes were collected from ovaries immediately after slaughter by aspiration with or without ovarian chopping. The studies showed that 0.44+0.59 embryos were collected from PMSG group, while 1.38+1.31 embryos were collected in FSH group. Fifty percent to 60% of recovered embryos were transferable. The non surgical technique gave a low recovery rate (14.40%) …

Reflections On Science And Technology, Ursula Goodenough Mar 2000

Reflections On Science And Technology, Ursula Goodenough

Biology Faculty Research

Science and technology are frequently confused. This essay points out the bases for this confusion and then focuses on a basic distinction, namely, that whereas science brings us information that we have little choice but to absorb and reflect upon, technology is something that humans elect to do and, hence, can also elect not to do. It is proposed that technological ethics are most cogently undertaken with scientific understanding as the linchpin and religious/artistic sensibilities as the muse.
