He Said, She Said: A Feminist Approach To Teaching The Twentieth-Century Novel In The Twenty-First Century, Elizabeth Richardson Viti
He Said, She Said: A Feminist Approach To Teaching The Twentieth-Century Novel In The Twenty-First Century, Elizabeth Richardson Viti
French Faculty Publications
The question of women's relationship to the literary canon is still pertinent today and is particularly significant for those of us who are both guided by feminist pedagogy and constrained by departmental limitations. How do we give an overview of the novel without either diminishing the importance of certain male novelists or eliminating female writers altogether? The author suggest that a thematic approach in which pairs of texts make explicit two different gender perspectives is useful. This approach underscores the notion that gender informs writing as well as reading and, equally significant, introduces feminist theory as a tool for literary …

Bubble Ring Play Of Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus): Implications For Cognition, Brenda Mccowan, Lori Marino, Erik Vance, Leah Walke, Diana Reiss
Sentience Collection
Research on the cognitive capacities of dolphins and other cetaceans (whales and porpoises) has importance for the study of comparative cognition, particularly with other large-brained social mammals, such as primates. One of the areas in which cetaceans can be compared with primates is that of object manipulation and physical causality, for which there is an abundant body of literature in primates. The authors supplemented qualitative observations with statistical methods to examine playful bouts of underwater bubble ring production and manipulation in 4 juvenile male captive bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). The results are consistent with the hypothesis that dolphins monitor the …

The Moral Complexion Of Consumption, Albert Borgmann
The Moral Complexion Of Consumption, Albert Borgmann
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Vigorous consumption is the sign of a prosperous and confident society. Some critics, however, find a high level of consumption morally objectionable. To see what is valid in these objections, one needs to understand the connection between consumption and the characteristic pattern of technology that is highlighted by the device paradigm and gives rise to paradigmatic consumption. Such consumption induces disengagement from reality and a decline of excellence. The response to these debilities is to accept paradigmatic consumption in some areas of life and to make room for focal things and practices in others. Research is needed to determine the …

Ecology (Re)Defined, Mary Rowland
Ecology (Re)Defined, Mary Rowland
United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications
This slender, well-written volume is a compendium of terms, 60 altogether, purportedly intended to introduce the layperson to the discipline of ecology. With encyclopedic listings from "Air" to "Zoos," we learn that potential effects of global warming include the spread of malaria and other tropical diseases to previously uninfected areas, and that the world's six billion humans consume 40% of the planet's photosynthetic output. It is clear from the first entry that the book is as much an environmental primer as a science-based one. For example, we read under the topic "Air" that "We should not continue human activities that …

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database
Tuberculosis (Tb) caused by Mycobacterium bovis is a worldwide threat to livestock and humans. One control strategy is to breed livestock that are more resistant to Mycobacterium bovis. In a 3-year heritability study 6 farmed red deer stags were selected from 39 on the basis of their differing responses to experimental challenge via the tonsillar sac with approximately 500 CFU of M. bovis. Two stags remained uninfected, two were moderately affected, and two developed serious spreading Tb. Seventy offspring, bred from these six stags by artificial insemination using stored semen, were similarly challenged with M. bovis …

Animals Disposal Of Diseased, Disabled, Or Dead Animals: Change Certain Provision Of The Dead Animal Disposal Act To Authorize Additional Methods For The Disposal Of Dead Animals; Repeal Certain Provisions Relating To Carcasses That Are Burned, Teresa Adams
Georgia State University Law Review
The Act, known as the Dead Animal Disposal Act, changes the Georgia Code concerning the disposal of dead animals to allow for additional methods of disposal. The Act also provides for the use of an unlisted disposal method which may use future technology that has been approved by the Commissioner of Agriculture. Finally, the Act repeals the prior requirement that burning carcasses must be attended during the entire burning process.
