Learning Reinforced Concreyte Design Principles Using A Java-Vrml Based Design Studio, Amarneethi Vamadevan

Masters Theses

Dynamics involving reinforced concrete design are the first real engineering course encountered by the undergraduate construction engineering students. Quite often its associated rigorous theories makes it an uninteresting academic hurdle for many below mediocre students. However when the theory is exemplified with multimedia, interaction and visualization techniques, the conceptual understanding is enhanced. The teaching methodology presented in this thesis is based on presenting students with an individualized, interactive and guided learning environment. The main elements of this approach are: a means of assimilating the student's interactive learning knowledge and behavior (user model), representation of the instructor's guidance and assessment knowledge …

New World Nine-Primaried Oscine Relationships: Constructing A Molecular Framework, John Klicka, Kevin P. Johnson, Scott M. Lanyon

Ornithology Program (HRC)

Historically, a paucity of comparative morphological characters has led to much debate regarding relationships within and among the major lineages of New World nine-primaried oscines. More recently, DNA-DNA hybridization studies have provided novel and testable hypotheses of relationships, although no consensus has been reached. For 40 songbird taxa, we obtained 1,929 base pairs (bp) of DNA sequence from the mitochondrial cytochrome-b (894 bp) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 2 (1,035 bp) genes. Phylogenetic analyses confirm the monophyly of this assemblage as traditionally defined. The lineages delineated historically on morphological grounds are retained; finches (Fringillinae) are sister to a well-supported clade …

A Strategy For Effectiveness In Preaching Old Testament Narrative Scripture, C. Timothy Clark Apr 2000

A Strategy For Effectiveness In Preaching Old Testament Narrative Scripture, C. Timothy Clark

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Old Testament preaching appears to be on the decline. Very often when it is preached, it is done poorly. Since narratives comprise 40% of the Old Testament, a large portion of God's Word is being either neglected or abused by many modern preachers. The purpose of this project is to show how proven hermeneutical and homiletical skills may be combined to provide a strategy for effectively preaching Old Testament narratives. The project will present a series of sermons based on the Old Testament book of Ruth which will demonstrate the author's strategy as it is fleshed out in practical exposition.

The Criminal Defense Lawyer's Fiduciary Duty To Clients With Mental Disability, Christopher Slobogin, Amy Mashburn Apr 2000

The Criminal Defense Lawyer's Fiduciary Duty To Clients With Mental Disability, Christopher Slobogin, Amy Mashburn

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This Article has argued that the defense attorney has a multifaceted fiduciary duty toward the client with mental disability. That duty requires, first and foremost, respect for the autonomy of the client. The lawyer shows that respect not only by heeding the wishes of the competent client but by refusing to heed the wishes of the incompetent client. A coherent approach to the competency construct is therefore important. Following the lead of Professor Bonnie, this Article has broken competency into two components: assistance competency and decisional competency. It has defined the former concept in traditional terms, as an understanding of …

Working Both (Positivist) Ends Toward A New (Pragmatist) Middle In Environmental Law, J.B. A. Ruhl Apr 2000

Working Both (Positivist) Ends Toward A New (Pragmatist) Middle In Environmental Law, J.B. A. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This review of Daniel Farber's recent book Eco-pragmatism, in which he argues on behalf of taking more pragmatic approaches to the development of environmental policy, provides both the background necessary for appreciating Farber's union of ecosystem dynamics science and environmental pragmatism philosophy, and the basis for extending the new "eco-pragmatism" approach into natural resources conservation settings. Eco-pragmatism implies the intersection of two components-the eco, being the rich and developing field of ecosystem science and management, and the pragmatism, being the classical American pragmatist philosophy represented today in environmental settings through the emergence of environmental pragmatism philosophy. Unfortunately, Eco-pragmatism provides little …

The Application Of Microcredit Technology To The Uk: Key Commercial And Policy Issues, Rosalind Copisarow

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

This article addresses the following issues: who needs microcredit in the UK, what is the extent of the unmet demand across the country, what are the precise terms and conditions required by microentrepreneurs, how repayment rates of at least 95% can be expected, and how an institution making microcredits can become self-financing within six years. The article also describes the main barriers faced by microcredit institutions in the UK and offers solutions to obtaining funds from the private, public, and voluntary sectors and to operating within a legal and regulatory framework that permits microcredit institutions to serve their clients with …

"Pleasing To The Eyes Of An Exile": The Latter-Day Saint Sojourn At Winter Quarters, 1846-1848, Jennifer L. Lund

BYU Studies

Early on the cold, clear morning of November 21, 1846, John D. Lee "arose from sleep," dressed, and "walked out" into the streets of Winter Quarters. Struck by his first view of daylight, he wrote:

I was astonished when I looked around and saw what serious enterprise and industry had brought to pass within 6 weeks past. A city of at least 400 houses had been erected in that short space of time, through the ingenuity and industry of the Saints. No other people but the Saints of God has ever been known to accomplish as much in so short …

The Dance Of First Beginnings: Contemporary Maya Creation Rituals In A World Context, Allen J. Christenson Apr 2000

The Dance Of First Beginnings: Contemporary Maya Creation Rituals In A World Context, Allen J. Christenson

BYU Studies

A nearly universal characteristic of ancient societies is to periodically carry out ceremonies and festivals intended to renew life, particularly in connection with the creation of the world. Many of these ceremonies are tied to New Year's celebrations, linking the start of the calendar year with the beginning of time itself. Such ceremonies reinforce the notion that when the world left the hands of deity at the time of its birth, it had greater power to sustain life and nurture its inhabitants. But as with all things, the passage of time and the wear and tear of day-to-day existence inevitably …

Membrane Cholesterol Content Modulates Activation Of Volume-Regulated Anion Current In Bovine Endothelial Cells., I Levitan, A E Christian, T N Tulenko, G H Rothblat

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Activation of volume-regulated anion current (VRAC) plays a key role in the maintenance of cellular volume homeostasis. The mechanisms, however, that regulate VRAC activity are not fully understood. We have examined whether VRAC activation is modulated by the cholesterol content of the membrane bilayer. The cholesterol content of bovine aortic endothelial cells was increased by two independent methods: (a) exposure to a methyl-beta-cyclodextrin saturated with cholesterol, or (b) exposure to cholesterol-enriched lipid dispersions. Enrichment of bovine aortic endothelial cells with cholesterol resulted in a suppression of VRAC activation in response to a mild osmotic gradient, but not to a strong …

A Theory Of Legal Strategy, Lynn M. Lopucki, Walter O. Weyrauch Apr 2000

A Theory Of Legal Strategy, Lynn M. Lopucki, Walter O. Weyrauch

Duke Law Journal

By the conventional view, case outcomes are largely the product of courts' application of law to facts. Even when courts do not generate outcomes in this manner, prevailing legal theory casts them as the arbiters of those outcomes. In a competing "strategic" view, lawyers and parties construct legal outcomes in what amounts to a contest of skill. Though the latter view better explains the process, no theory has yet been propounded as to how lawyers can replace judges as arbiters. This article propounds such a theory. It classifies legal strategies into three types: those that require willing acceptance by judges, …

Molecular Taxonomy Of The Lichen Genus Heterodermia, Linda Hirschberger Apr 2000

Molecular Taxonomy Of The Lichen Genus Heterodermia, Linda Hirschberger

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Heterodermia is lichen consisting of a fungus and algae. Morphology and chemistry cannot provide definitive evidence for the identity of Heterodermia because various species have very similar morphologies that cannot always be distinguished. Other species only differ by the presence or absence of secondary chemicals detected. by specific chemical tests, which makes distinguishing between two species difficult. The objective of this project is to use Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphisms (RFLPs) to determine how closely related each Heterodermia species is to one another. RFLPs will also be used to determine how closely related a species is to its equal in another …

The Hp1 Protein Family: Getting A Grip On Chromatin, J Eissenberg, Sarah C.R. Elgin

Biology Faculty Research

HP1 was first described in Drosophila as a heterochromatin-associated protein with dosage-dependent effects on heterochromatin-induced gene silencing. Recently, membership of the HP1 protein family has expanded tremendously. A number of intriguing interactions between HP1 and other proteins have been described, implicating HP1 in gene regulation, DNA replication, and nuclear architecture.

How The News Media Tell The Story Of The Yanomami: A Qualitative Study Of Narrative Coherence And The Ideal Audience, Tania H. Cantrell Apr 2000

How The News Media Tell The Story Of The Yanomami: A Qualitative Study Of Narrative Coherence And The Ideal Audience, Tania H. Cantrell

Theses and Dissertations

The news media link anthropological discovery and the communications discipline. In this study, press stories about the Yanomami Indians of northern Brazil and neighboring Venezuela have been studied and narratively analyzed according to Narrative Paradigm Theory. While not an audience study, plausible interpretations of ideal audience member values and insights into the question of human identity are presented. It is argued that the media are storytellers who tell the audience about itself by telling it about others recursively.

Press coverage of the Yanomami is divided into eight general categories. These include the environment, effects of "civilization," warfare/violence, massacre, gold miners, …

Molecular And Biological Characterization Of A Tanapox Virus Tnf-Binding Protein And The Complete Nucleotide Sequence Of The Psti-J Genomic Fragment, Mini Paulose-Murphy Apr 2000

Molecular And Biological Characterization Of A Tanapox Virus Tnf-Binding Protein And The Complete Nucleotide Sequence Of The Psti-J Genomic Fragment, Mini Paulose-Murphy

Dissertations

Most of the poxvirus encoded virulence factors have been identified as proteins that are secreted from infected host cells. Some of these secretory proteins impede host immune defenses. We have previously demonstrated that tanapox virus (TPV) infected cells secrete a 38 kDa glycopeptide that binds to human (h) interferon-γ, h-interleukin (IL)-2, and hIL-5. We now show an additional activity in the supernatant from TPV infected cells that down-regulates the expression of tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-α) induced cell adhesion molecule gene expression. This activity was not detected in mock infected cells. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) on primary human endothelial cells, …

Increased Levels Of Salivary Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 (Igf-I) And Insulin Like Growth Factor Binding Proteins-1 And 3 (Igfbp-I And Igfbp-3) In Patients With Periodontitis, Hosam Ghanem, Mohamad Said, Mohamad Abd El-Latif, Jilan M Youssef

Mansoura Medical Journal

IGF-I (insulin-like growth factor-f) is probably the most potent anticata-bolic and anabolic hormone. There are recent data in vivo and in vitro in animals according to which apoptosis of cells can be stopped by IGF-I. Insulin like growth factor binding pro-tein-l (IGFBP-I) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) are the best characterized of circulating insulin-like growth factor binding proteins. IGFBPs are not only present in serum but are also produced locally by many different cells where they may have important functions in binding and/or targeting IGF-I for the respective receptors. The aim of this study was to measure serum …

A Generic Object-Oriented Server Model, Brian Douglas Jones Apr 2000

A Generic Object-Oriented Server Model, Brian Douglas Jones

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a generic, object-oriented model for the simulation of networks of queues. Generic simulation modeling provides robust ways of laying out processes in stochastic, event driven simulations. The approach taken is to define a methodology that will be implementation independent, termed the Generic Server Simulation Model (GSSM); thus, leaving the implementers to choose the best (most suited for their use) means of implementation. GSSM uses many object-oriented concepts to provide its basic structure and has in its design the ability to take advantage of these object-oriented concepts, including reuse of (existing) code. GSSM …
