Repellents To Reduce Cable Gnawing By Wild Norway Rats, Stephen A. Shumake, Ray T. Sterner, Stanley E. Gaddis Apr 2000

Repellents To Reduce Cable Gnawing By Wild Norway Rats, Stephen A. Shumake, Ray T. Sterner, Stanley E. Gaddis

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Rodents gnaw communications and power cables, resulting in service interruptions, fires, and other safety concerns. Commensal rodents such as the Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) have been implicated in many of these situations. Two chemical repellents (capsicum oleoresin+apsaicin and denatonium benzoate) at 2.0% mass/mass concentrations in a polybutene carrier (Indopol-controlw) ere evaluated for repellent efficacy compared to a plastic mesh physical barrier material (Vexa*) and the polybutene carrier (placebo) alone using groups of individually caged wild Norway rats. The materials were applied to short lengths of communications cable (RG-8U) with the repellents enclosed in electrical shrink tubing around the …

Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Causes More-Severe Systemic Disease In Suckling Piglets Than In Colostrum-Deprived Neonatal Piglets, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, Joachim F. L. Pohlenz, Harley W. Moon, Alison D. O’Brien Apr 2000

Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Causes More-Severe Systemic Disease In Suckling Piglets Than In Colostrum-Deprived Neonatal Piglets, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, Joachim F. L. Pohlenz, Harley W. Moon, Alison D. O’Brien

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Our objective was to determine if suckling neonatal piglets are susceptible to enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 disease. Surprisingly, EHEC O157:H7 caused more-rapid and more-severe neurological disease in suckling neonates than in those fed an artificial diet. Shiga toxin-negative O157:H7 did not cause neurological disease but colonized and caused attaching-and-effacing intestinal lesions.

Effects Of Acid Adaptation Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 On Efficacy Of Acetic Acid Spray Washes To Decontaminate Beef Carcass Tissue, Elaine Berry, Catherine N. Cutter Apr 2000

Effects Of Acid Adaptation Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 On Efficacy Of Acetic Acid Spray Washes To Decontaminate Beef Carcass Tissue, Elaine Berry, Catherine N. Cutter

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Exposure to low pH and organic acids in the bovine gastrointestinal tract may result in the induced acid resistance of E. coli O157:H7 and other pathogens that may subsequently contaminate beef carcasses. The effect of acid adaptation of E. coliO157:H7 on the ability of acetic acid spray washing to reduce populations of this organism on beef carcass tissue was examined. Stationary-phase acid resistance and the ability to induce acid tolerance were determined for a collection of E. coliO157:H7 strains by testing the survival of acid-adapted and unadapted cells in HCl-acidified tryptic soy broth (pH 2.5). ThreeE. coli …

Long-Term Spatial Stability Of Coyote (Canis Latrans) Home Ranges In Southeastern Colorado, Ann M. Kitchen, Eric M. Gese, Edward R. Schauster Apr 2000

Long-Term Spatial Stability Of Coyote (Canis Latrans) Home Ranges In Southeastern Colorado, Ann M. Kitchen, Eric M. Gese, Edward R. Schauster

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Long-term stability of territorial boundaries has not been well documented in canids. To evaluate the prevalence of long-term spatial stability of coyote (Canis latrans) home ranges, we compared the overlap of territorial boundaries and the spatial distribution of telemetry locations of packs in southeastern Colorado. From August 1983 to July 1988 (period l), 16 coyotes from six packs were radio-tracked. From April 1996 to August 1997 (period 2), 12 coyotes from six packs were captured and tracked in the same area. Mean percentage of overlap of pack ranges was 89.8 ± 8.3% (+SD) for period 1 ranges over …

Anti-Feminism In Recent Apocalyptic Film, Joel W. Martin Apr 2000

Anti-Feminism In Recent Apocalyptic Film, Joel W. Martin

Journal of Religion & Film

As the second millennium winds down, apocalyptic themes inform many Hollywood plots. Several recent popular films and television shows depict epochal threats from space. This essay focuses on the films Independence Day, Armageddon, Deep Impact, Contact, and The Lion King and an episode from "Futurama." Extremely popular--"Armageddon" was the highest grossing film released in 1998--, these films and shows beg for attention. Strikingly, three of them give prominence to father-daughter relationships (in Armageddon, the oil driller hero dominates his coming of age daughter; in Deep Impact, the journalist hero, although estranged from …

Bruce Willis As The Messiah: Human Effort, Salvation And Apocalypticism In Twelve Monkeys, Frances Flannery-Dailey Apr 2000

Bruce Willis As The Messiah: Human Effort, Salvation And Apocalypticism In Twelve Monkeys, Frances Flannery-Dailey

Journal of Religion & Film

Twelve Monkeys (1995) is representative of numerous recent Hollywood films that focus on the theme of the end of the world by drawing on standard apocalyptic motifs from Judaism and Christianity. However, although the formal elements of the film share much with ancient apocalypses, the film desacralizes apocalypticism by replacing divine mediation and salvation with human effort, thus relocating the apocalypse entirely within the sphere of human activity and concern. In the transformation of ancient apocalyptic images, this film serves as a pointed commentary on the usurpation of religion by science, the new modern God.

Divalent Metal Binding Properties Of The Methionyl Aminopeptidase From Escherichia Coli, Ventris M. D'Souza, Brian Bennett, Alicja J. Copik, Richard C. Holz Apr 2000

Divalent Metal Binding Properties Of The Methionyl Aminopeptidase From Escherichia Coli, Ventris M. D'Souza, Brian Bennett, Alicja J. Copik, Richard C. Holz

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

The metal-binding properties of the methionyl aminopeptidase from Escherichia coli (MetAP) were investigated. Measurements of catalytic activity as a function of added Co(II) and Fe(II) revealed that maximal enzymatic activity is observed after the addition of only 1 equiv of divalent metal ion. Based on these studies, metal binding constants for the first metal binding event were found to be 0.3 ± 0.2 μM and 0.2 ± 0.2 μM for Co(II)- and Fe(II)-substituted MetAP, respectively. Binding of excess metal ions (>50 equiv) resulted in the loss of ∼50% of the catalytic activity. Electronic absorption spectral titration of a 1 …

Comparative Analysis Of Three Remediation Technologies For The Clean Up Of Petroleum Contaminated Groundwater, Thomas Bouck Apr 2000

Comparative Analysis Of Three Remediation Technologies For The Clean Up Of Petroleum Contaminated Groundwater, Thomas Bouck

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This paper will compare three remediation technologies to determine which is the most efficient and effective remediation treatment for a petroleum contaminated groundwater site. The three remediation technologies are in situ bioremediation, in situ air sparging, and air stripping with carbon filtration. This comparison will be done through a literature review. It will take the information derived from the review and then apply it to the information about a petroleum contaminated groundwater location. The comparative analysis will consist of these parameters permit requirements, clean up time, operating and maintenance, and geological factors.

These factors permit requirements, cleanup time, and operating …

The Ciceronian Rhetoric Of John Quincy Adams, Lyon Rathbun Apr 2000

The Ciceronian Rhetoric Of John Quincy Adams, Lyon Rathbun

Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications

This article examines the way in which the classical rhetorical tradition inspired John Quincy Adams's public life. While rhetorical scholars have probed Adams's role as Harvard's first Boylston Professor of Rhetoric, they have not appreciated how the classical tradition in general, and Ciceronian rhetoric in particular, influenced his political career. Social scientists, on the other hand, have studied Adams's impact on Antebellum America but have not appreciated how his life-long devotion to classical rhetoric shaped his response to public issues. John Quincy Adams remained inspired by classical rhetorical ideals long after the neo-classicalism and deferential politics of the founding generation …

Effect Of Chlamydia Trachomatis Infection And Subsequent Tnfa Secretion On Apoptosis In The Murine Genital Tract, Jean-Luc Perfettini, Toni Darville, Gabriel Gachelin, Philippe Souque, Michel Huerre, Alice Dautry-Varsat, David M. Ojcius Apr 2000

Effect Of Chlamydia Trachomatis Infection And Subsequent Tnfa Secretion On Apoptosis In The Murine Genital Tract, Jean-Luc Perfettini, Toni Darville, Gabriel Gachelin, Philippe Souque, Michel Huerre, Alice Dautry-Varsat, David M. Ojcius

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

The pathology observed during Chlamydia infection is due initially to localized tissue damage caused by the infection itself, followed by deleterious host inflammatory responses that lead to permanent scarring. We have recently reported that the infection byChlamydia in vitro results in apoptosis of epithelial cells and macrophages and that infected monocytes secrete the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β. At the same time, proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) can also trigger apoptosis of susceptible cells. To study the possible relationship between Chlamydia trachomatis infection and apoptosis in vivo, we used the terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling technique to …

The Culture Of Belief And The Politics Of Religion, William P. Marshall Apr 2000

The Culture Of Belief And The Politics Of Religion, William P. Marshall

Law and Contemporary Problems

Religion has stood at the center of the American stage during the years of Bill Clinton's presidency. Marshall argues that the political manifestation of religion is not confined to the instances when religion becomes involved in express political activity, such as lobbying or partisan politics, but rather, religion must be understood as a pervasive social force that has an inevitable political effect.

Importance Of Migrating Salmon Smolt In Ring-Billed (Larus Delawarensis) And California Gull (L. Californicus) Diets Near Priest Rapids Dam, Washington, Darryl L. York, John L. Cummings, John E. Steuber, Patricia A. Pochop, Christi A. Yoder

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Ring-billed (Larus delawarensis) and California Gulls (L. californicus) have been implicated in depredations on migrating salmon smolt in the Columbia River. As part of a gull management program conducted in 1995 and 1996, we collected L. delawarensis (n = 120) and L. californicus (n = 45) near Priest Rapids Dam, Washington, and analyzed stomach contents to determine food habits and thus the importance of fish in gull diets. Percent volume measurements and index of relative importance rankings suggested a greater reliance on fish by L. californicus than by L. delawarensis. Peak percent consumption of fish by …

Movements And Distribution Of Radio-Collared Canada Geese In Anchorage, Alaska, Darryl York, John Cummings, Kate Wedemeyer Apr 2000

Movements And Distribution Of Radio-Collared Canada Geese In Anchorage, Alaska, Darryl York, John Cummings, Kate Wedemeyer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We monitored radio-equipped (n = 50) and neck-collared (n = 205) lesser Canada geese (Branta canadensis parvipes) during August through October 1996 in Anchorage, Alaska, to ascertain local patterns of movement and post-molt dispersal; to identify geese from molting sites that frequent Elmendorf Air Force Base (EAFB); and to evaluate the effectiveness of hazing at EAFB. Telemetry data and visual observations of collared geese indicated 59% of geese observed at EAFB were from molting sites ≤10 km from EAFB. We observed 93 marked geese from 11 molting sites 1 or more times in the EAFB airdrome, and 63% …

Natural Transfer Of Helminths Of Marine Origin To Freshwater Fishes, With Observations On The Development Of Diphyllobothrium Alascence, Robert L. Rausch, Ann M. Adams Apr 2000

Natural Transfer Of Helminths Of Marine Origin To Freshwater Fishes, With Observations On The Development Of Diphyllobothrium Alascence, Robert L. Rausch, Ann M. Adams

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Infective stages of helminths of 5 species that occur as adults in marine mammals were found in burbot, Lota lota (L.) (Gadidae), from the lower Kuskokwim River (southwestern Alaska): Diphyllobothrium alascense Rausch et Williamson, 1958; Pyramicocephalus phocarum (Fabricius, 1780); Corynosoma strumosum (Rudolphi, 1801); Corynosoma semerme (Forsell, 1904); and Pseudoterranova decipiens (Krabbe, 1878). Some larval stages were obtained also from smelt, Osmerus mordax dentex Steindachner, an anadromous fish important as prey of burbot. Burbot, which are freshwater fish, could become paratenic hosts of those helminths by means of at least three interactions: by consuming marine fishes in brackish waters at river …
