A Comparison Of Quasi-Static Indentation Testing To Low Velocity Impact Testing, Michael J. Douglas Apr 2000

A Comparison Of Quasi-Static Indentation Testing To Low Velocity Impact Testing, Michael J. Douglas

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A static test method for modeling low-velocity foreign object impact events to composites would prove to be very beneficial to researchers since much more data can be obtained from a static test than from an impact test. In order to examine if this is feasible, a series of static indentation and low velocity impact tests were carried out and compared. Square specimens of many sizes and thicknesses were utilized to cover the array of types of low velocity impact events. Laminates with a rt/4 stacking sequence were employed since this is by far the most common type of engineering laminate. …

Process Flow Optimization Studies Through Discrete Event Simulation, Milind Chokshi Apr 2000

Process Flow Optimization Studies Through Discrete Event Simulation, Milind Chokshi

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Computer-aided simulation has begun to emerge as a powerful tool for numerical analysis of the behavior and anticipated performance of industrial systems and their optimization. Applications include materials handling, storage and controls systems, prediction of manufacturing efficiencies, and production optimization. Simulations are used to test baseline models and subsequently analyze new production concepts, operating strategies, and planned procedures prior to costly implementation.

The study of process flows in a manufacturing environment is difficult due to its inherent stochastic nature. Breakdown of the sub-systems and failures of machines is a random process and needs to be solved based on concepts of …

Waterwoman, Lenore Hart Apr 2000

Waterwoman, Lenore Hart

English Theses & Dissertations

This novel explores loyalty and responsibility to family versus the desire to choose a life of one's own. The story is told &om the first-person viewpoint of Annie Revels, who is born in 1900 on a barrier island off the coast of Virginia's Eastern Shore.

The story also explores the positive and negative aspects of a life spent in intimate isolation. Annie must battle the vagaries of nature, the prejudices of a male-dominated culture, and the tensions of a crippled family unit. Most importantly, she must face the conflicting desires that threaten her known world, and hard decisions which may …

I Won't Say Heaven: Notes On An Outer Banks Village, Judith Depietro Mercier Apr 2000

I Won't Say Heaven: Notes On An Outer Banks Village, Judith Depietro Mercier

English Theses & Dissertations

I Won't Say Heaven: Notes on an Outer Banks Village is a work of narrative nonfiction that focuses on Duck, North Carolina, a rapidly changing village on the northern Outer Banks, and the people, both living and dead, who have had a stake in it. This collection includes profiles, oral history, personal essay, and reportage. It attempts to recreate the past, detail the present, and speculate on the future of this once sparsely populated neighborhood of risk takers--the seafarers, fishermen, and hunters who lived there with their families.

Virtually hidden until the early 1980s, Duck enjoyed several centuries of solitude …

The Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) design technique, which has the ability to bridge the gap between theory and the real-world control design problem, is utilized in the design of a MIMO digital flight control system for an unmanned research vehicle (URV) that is presented in this paper. The design illustrates how the real-world knowledge of the plant to be controlled and the desired performance specifications can be utilized in trying to achieve a successful robust design for a nonlinear control problem. This paper presents some of the issues involved in developing, implementing, and flight testing a flight control system (FCS) …

Diffusion Problems In Wound Healing And A Scattering Approach To Immune System Interactions, Julia Suzanne Arnold Apr 2000

Diffusion Problems In Wound Healing And A Scattering Approach To Immune System Interactions, Julia Suzanne Arnold

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

A theoretical model for the existence of a Critical Size Defect (CSD) in certain animals is the focus of the majority of this dissertation. Adam [1] recently developed a one-dimensional model of this phenomenon, and chapters I–V address the exist the CSD in a two-dimensional model and a three-dimensional model. The two dimensional (or 1-d circular) model is the more appropriate for a study of CSD's. In that model we assume a circular wound of uniform depth and develop a time-independent form of the diffusion equation relevant to the study of the CSD phenomenon. It transpires that the range of …

One Mistress And No Master: Elizabeth I And Her Use Of Public Personas To Gain And Maintain Power, Michael J. Davye Apr 2000

One Mistress And No Master: Elizabeth I And Her Use Of Public Personas To Gain And Maintain Power, Michael J. Davye

History Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the evolution of the personas that Elizabeth used to gain, hold, and wield power during her reign as Queen of England. These personas were most likely conscious constructs created to deal with the problems Elizabeth faced as ruler of England. She had been bastardized by her father, Henry VIII, and, therefore, was considered by many to have no legitimate claim to the throne. But this problem was almost insignificant in contrast to the problems she faced trying to assert her authority as a female monarch. Elizabeth realized the prevailing wisdom of the …

Kinetic Characterization Of Tetracycline Binding And Release By Demineralized Bone - Dfdba, Orner Kabil Apr 2000

Kinetic Characterization Of Tetracycline Binding And Release By Demineralized Bone - Dfdba, Orner Kabil

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The microbial etiology of periodontal diseases has led to widespread research in the development of methods and local delivery systems to increase the efficacy of antibiotic therapy. Several drug delivery systems employing biodegradable and nonbiodegradable carriers have been shown to release antibiotics directly into periodontal pockets. The purpose of this study was to determine the binding and release kinetics of tetracycline by demineralized bone. Further aspects of the study include in vitro evaluation of DFDBA (demineralized freeze-dried bone allografts) as a tetracycline carrier system for periodontal therapy. Experiments were performed which employed different tetracycline concentrations with constant amounts of bone …

Rationality In Law And Economics Scholarship, Jeanne L. Schroeder Apr 2000

Rationality In Law And Economics Scholarship, Jeanne L. Schroeder

Articles

Jeanne L. Schroeder critiques Richard Posner's conception of rationality in law and economics, arguing that his broad and evolving definition dilutes the concept, rendering it too vague and analytically weak. She advocates for a more nuanced approach that integrates psychological insights and acknowledges the limitations of traditional economic models. Schroeder emphasizes the need for empirical accuracy and theoretical rigor, challenging Posner's dismissal of behavioral economics and his reliance on evolutionary biology for explanations of irrational behavior.

Cytokines And The Anorexia Of Infection: Potential Mechanisms And Treatments, Donna O. Mccarthy

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Anorexia during infection is thought to be mediated by immunoregulatory cytokines such as interleukins 1 and 6 and tumor necrosis factor. This article reviews the potential mechanisms of action by which these cytokines are thought to suppress food intake during infection and examines the proposition that blocking of cytokine activity might be one approach to improving food intake of the infected host.

Drug Treatment Courts And Emergent Experimentalist Government, Michael C. Dorf, Charles F. Sabel Apr 2000

Drug Treatment Courts And Emergent Experimentalist Government, Michael C. Dorf, Charles F. Sabel

Vanderbilt Law Review

Despite the continuing "war on drugs," the last decade has witnessed the creation and nationwide spread of a remarkable set of institutions, drug treatment courts. In drug treatment court, a criminal defendant pleads guilty or otherwise accepts responsibility for a charged offense and accepts placement in a court-mandated program of drug treatment. The judge and court personnel closely monitor the defendant's performance in the program and the program's capacity to serve the mandated client. The federal government and national associations in turn monitor the local drug treatment courts and disseminate successful practices. The ensemble of institutions, monitoring, and pooling exemplifies …

A Longitudinal Assessment Of Temperament In Octopus Bimaculoides, David Loyd Sinn Apr 2000

A Longitudinal Assessment Of Temperament In Octopus Bimaculoides, David Loyd Sinn

Dissertations and Theses

Cephalopods, including Octopus spp., are highly intelligent molluscs that play major roles in many marine food webs, both as top-level feeders (Ambrose, 1984) as well as by constituting a major source of protein for the animals above them (Lang, Hochberg, Ambrose, & Engle, 1997). They also are fascinating organisms for behavioral studies, with elaborate repertoires of behavior based on plasticity and learning (Wells, 1962a; 1962b; 1978) which in complexity rivals that of the vertebrates. The study of individual differences in behavior is a facet of behavioral research that has recently gained attention in the literature (Gosling & John, 1999). Traditionally, …
