Individual Or Shared Entrepreneurship: The Influence Of Personal Leadership Style, Susan M. James Apr 2000

Individual Or Shared Entrepreneurship: The Influence Of Personal Leadership Style, Susan M. James

Theses and Graduate Projects

A key issue faced by new entrepreneurs is selection of a business structure. Overwhelmingly, one of two options is chosen: sole proprietorship or shared partnership. Personal leadership style, encompassing personal values, an individual definition of success, and possession of entrepreneurial traits, impacts the ultimate decision. Through a woman's perspective, selection of a business structure through definition of personal leadership style is examined in this paper.

Sheriff Or Prisoner? The United States And The World Trade Organization, Paul B. Stephan Apr 2000

Sheriff Or Prisoner? The United States And The World Trade Organization, Paul B. Stephan

Chicago Journal of International Law

To understand these claims about U.S. hegemony, we need some perspective. I would like to compare two competing accounts of the U.S. role in the global economy. In one version, the United States has built an international system that replicates its ideology, culture and values. This is a unipolar world where a broad range of fundamental choices about political and economic structure reflect Washington's preferences. The United States may not make every meaningful decision in administering the world economy, any more than the headquarters of a multinational corporation dictates precisely what its local managers must do. But in this scenario, …

Civil Society And Multiple Repositories Of Power, Abner S. Greene Apr 2000

Civil Society And Multiple Repositories Of Power, Abner S. Greene

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Securing plural mechanisms for human flourishing is at the core of the civil society project. Greene advances this claim first by arguing that it is impossible to disentangle the public from the private in our everyday lives, and thus it is no slight on the civil society project that private, civil society institutions are not exogenous from the public institutions with which they interact. Second, Greene defends the traditional public/private line at least insofar as it reflects plural modes of achieving legal and social change. Third, the Article buttresses the case for civil society even if such institutions foster non-democratic, …

The Moral Exclusivity Of The New Civil Society, Dorothy E. Roberts Apr 2000

The Moral Exclusivity Of The New Civil Society, Dorothy E. Roberts

Chicago-Kent Law Review

While commending civil society revivalists' commitment to freedom and equality, this Article argues that the revivalists' moral vision is marred by exclusivity. Roberts locates this moral exclusivity in a flawed account of the relationship between social inequality and moral decline. By discounting the importance of social justice for creating civic faith, involvement, and solidarity, the revivalists' proposals tend to benefit society's most privileged families.

Places In The Mind: Evocative Walks Through Galdós' Madrid, Linda M. Willem Apr 2000

Places In The Mind: Evocative Walks Through Galdós' Madrid, Linda M. Willem

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Reality or imagination, fact or fiction, truth or illusion, life or art - these competing claims of referentiality and textuality have long been the concern of writers and scholars of realist literature. In her recent book, All is True, Lilian R. Furst bemoans the tendency of literary critics to view these conepts as an either/or option that privileges one at the expense of the other. Rather than being mutually exclusive, referentiality and textuality are seen by Furst as complementary and interdependent. She proposes a mode of analysis that recognizes the dialogic relationship between them and focuses on the porous …

Feeding Habits Of Young-Of-Year Striped Bass, Morone Saxatilis, And White Perch, Morone Americana, In Lower James River, Va, Paul J. Rudershausen, Joseph G. Loesch

Virginia Journal of Science

A total of 188 young-of-year (YOY) striped bass, Morone saxatilis, and 199 YOY white perch, Morone americana, were collected by pushnet, seine and trawl during 24-hour periods from June through August, 1992 in lower James River, Virginia. The purpose was to identify prey and temporal and spatial feeding habits. Copepods were the most numerous prey of both species. Fishes and mysids comprised the largest volumetric percentage of diets of striped bass and white perch, respectively. Using an index of relative importance, leptodorids and copepods were the most important prey of striped bass and white perch, respectively. Both species …

Literary And Poetic Performance In Plato's Laws, Gerard Naddaf Apr 2000

Literary And Poetic Performance In Plato's Laws, Gerard Naddaf

The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter

Plato’s evaluations of the written and spoken word are complex, even ambiguous. On the one hand, he clearly privileges the give-and-take oral conversation as the paradigm for philosophical discussion, and on the basis of this paradigm he offers strong critiques of the written word, notably in the Phaedrus and Letter 7. On the other hand, he is a most famous enemy of the oral performance of poetry − notwithstanding the fact that in the Republic he gives ‘music’ a prominent place in education. When we turn to the Laws, we encounter another aspect or dimension of Plato’s thinking about the …

Restoring The Balance Of Power: Impeachment And The Twenty-Second Amendment, James Randolph Peck Apr 2000

Restoring The Balance Of Power: Impeachment And The Twenty-Second Amendment, James Randolph Peck

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

The recent proceedings against President William Jefferson Clinton brought Congress' impeachment power into the national spotlight. In the public debate on when it is appropriate for Congress to exercise this power, it is important to consider that the Framers gave this power to the legislature principally as a tool to maintain a balance of power between the legislative and executive branches of the federal government. Examining the debates at the Constitutional Convention, this Note details how the Framers deliberately sought to balance the President's term in office and eligibility for re-election with the Congress' impeachment power in order to prevent …

Review Of The Fontenelle & Cahanne Trading Posts: The History And Archeology Of Two Missouri River Sites By Richard E. Jensen, Thomas D. Thiessen Apr 2000

Review Of The Fontenelle & Cahanne Trading Posts: The History And Archeology Of Two Missouri River Sites By Richard E. Jensen, Thomas D. Thiessen

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

More than a mere archeological site report, this volume is an important contribution to the history and archeology of the fur trade of the American West. It tells the story of two early nineteenth-century trading posts that operated, sometimes in competition with one another, during the same approximate time and in the same region. Cabanne's Post was situated near the mouth of Ponca Creek north of present-day Omaha, Nebraska. Fontenelle's was located about fifteen miles to the south and gave one of its several historical names to the present city of Bellevue. Although the ownership of each post changed over …

Leading A College As A Liberal Arts Practice, Leon Malan, Judith Muyskens, Anne Ponder, Ann Page Stecker

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

A common and rather prevalent model for leading and planning in higher education is a contest of wills optimizing local, current matters. In contrast, at Colby-Sawyer College, we are explicit, careful, and collaborative about working together respectfully on qualitative and institutional and long-term matters. We hope that the model for leadership that we have provided below, one that demonstrates how we make our decisions and conduct our business in a style that differs from academic political business as usual, will serve as a model for other institutions.

Thinking Like A Dune Field: Geologic History In The Nebraska Sand Hills, David B. Loope, James Swinehart Apr 2000

Thinking Like A Dune Field: Geologic History In The Nebraska Sand Hills, David B. Loope, James Swinehart

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The Nebraska Sand Hills region is a giant dune field that is presently stabilized by prairie vegetation. During numerous severe droughts within the last 15,000 years, the dunes have lost their plant cover and have migrated freely. Wetlands between dunes are extensive in the central Sand Hills and are connected to the High Plains (Ogallala) aquifer. Lakes and wetlands were formed when dunes blocked and deranged stream systems. Evaporation of water from wetlands may benefit adjacent dune vegetation during extended droughts, by locally increasing humidity and rainfall. Buried bison tracks are abundant within the dunes, suggesting that grass and water …

Use Of Fatty Acid Stores By Larvae And Adults Of A Nebraska Salt Marsh Tiger Beetle, Cicindela Togata Globicollis Casey, W. Wyatt Hoback, R. L. Rana, D. W. Stanley Apr 2000

Use Of Fatty Acid Stores By Larvae And Adults Of A Nebraska Salt Marsh Tiger Beetle, Cicindela Togata Globicollis Casey, W. Wyatt Hoback, R. L. Rana, D. W. Stanley

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Tiger beetles are common predators in open habitats throughout the Great Plains, including the eastern salt marshes. Adult tiger beetles are active searchers that attack and eat small insects. By contrast, their larvae are sit-and-wait predators that form permanent burrows and depend on prey moving within striking distance. We hypothesized that adults and larvae of the tiger beetle, Cicindela togata globicollis Casey, would differ in their utilization of lipid (fat) energy reserves, such as fatty acids, based on differences in the likelihood of starvation. To investigate this, we determined the fatty acid profiles from larvae and adult tiger beetles. We …

Production Agriculture Versus The Environment: The Role Of Statistics, Linda J. Young Apr 2000

Production Agriculture Versus The Environment: The Role Of Statistics, Linda J. Young

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Corn production in the United States provides an example of the agricultural changes that have occurred in recent times. Because all such agricultural activity potentially can affect the environment to some degree, the challenge is now to quantify and understand those effects. Although monitoring of the environment for such effects is not new, the procedures often fall short of providing reliable quantitative data. One example is the inconsistent, incomplete, and unreliable information currently available to assess US surface water quality and trends in that quality. The utilization of probability-based sampling designs could playa vital role in the improvement of information …

Influence Of Past Interactions On The Prairie Today: A Hypothesis, Kathleen H. Keeler Apr 2000

Influence Of Past Interactions On The Prairie Today: A Hypothesis, Kathleen H. Keeler

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Past conditions in North American prairies have left behind animals and plants whose features were shaped by interactions, some of which no longer exist. For example, pronghorns are fast runners but there are now no fast predators to chase them. Similarly, bison activity structured grasslands, but few prairie reserves now have bison. Here I draw attention to possible cases where ecological patterns are best explained by conditions not present in the modern prairie and propose that such outcomes may be more important than presently thought. My aim is to stimulate a reevaluation of prairie organisms and the effect of their …
