Grades Four And Eight Students' And Teachers' Perceptions Of Girls' And Boys' Writing Competencies, Shelley Peterson Apr 2000

Grades Four And Eight Students' And Teachers' Perceptions Of Girls' And Boys' Writing Competencies, Shelley Peterson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Addressing gender disparities in the results of large-scale tests of student writing, this study examined fourth- and eighth-grade teachers' and students' perspectives on boys' and girls' relative writing competence. Interview and questionnaire responses showed a privileging of girls' writing over boys' writing. Girls' writing was viewed as more detailed, descriptive, and showing greater conformity to writing conventions. To some extent, girls' relative success on large-scale writing assessment may be related to students' and teachers' expectations that girls are more competent than boys in the areas measured in the evaluation rubrics. The results of this study indicate a need for conversations …

The True Truth About Kgi And The Field Station, Paul Faulstich

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

There are multiple truths. One is the true truth. This truth remains the same no matter what anyone thinks or says about it. For example, it is true truth that we need oxygen. and that trees provide it. No matter what we think or say about it, this is the way it is. And, the Bernard Biological Field Station is habitat to threatened and endangered plants and animals. This, too, we know to be true.

An Approach To Branding Services, Y L R Moorthi

Working Papers

This paper provides an approach for branding a service. The approach integrates David Aaker's Brand Identity framework, with the IPs of services marketing and the economic classification of goods. The 7Ps of services are product\ price, place, promotion, physical evidence, process and people. The economic classification divides goods into search, experience and credence goods. Differential Expression Of Chemokines In A Mouse Model Of Wound Healing, Susan H. Jackman, Matthew B. Yoak, Shivaleela Keerthy, Bonnie L. Beaver

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Macrophages have a multifaceted role in wound healing. While their initial activity may be in the degradation and elimination of damaged tissue, macrophages also produce and secrete a variety of mediators that can participate in the repair process as well. To perform these functions, macrophages must be recruited to a wound site. Our purpose was to examine the temporal and spatial expression of macrophage chemoattracting cytokines (chemokines) at a surgical wound site. A surgical wound was prepared on the dorsal aspect of B6AFI/J mice. Biopsies were obtained from the wound and a comparable nonwounded area between 6 and 72 hr …

Dietary Fish Oil Sensitizes A549 Lung Xenografts To Doxorubicin Chemotherapy, W. Elaine Hardman, Mary Pat Moyer, Ivan L. Cameron Apr 2000

Dietary Fish Oil Sensitizes A549 Lung Xenografts To Doxorubicin Chemotherapy, W. Elaine Hardman, Mary Pat Moyer, Ivan L. Cameron

Biochemistry and Microbiology

A549 xenografts were allowed to grow in nude mice to about 5 mm in diameter, then diets were changed to modified AIN-76 diets containing 19% wt/wt. fish oil (FO) or 20% wt./wt. com oil (CO). Ten days later dietary ferric citrate (0.3% wt./dry wt.) was added and doxoribicin (DOX) treatment (3.6 mg/kg i.v. each of the 5 days for 18 days) commenced. Treatment with DOX halted the growth of tumors in the CO fed mice. However, in those mice, which consumed FO or FO with ferric citrate, treatment with DOX caused significant tumor regression.

Accountability Policy At The Street Level In Kentucky: Teachers And Administrators Debate The Fairness Of Continuous Improvement Versus Relative Standing, Jane Clark Lindle Apr 2000

Accountability Policy At The Street Level In Kentucky: Teachers And Administrators Debate The Fairness Of Continuous Improvement Versus Relative Standing, Jane Clark Lindle

Publications

While scholars of educational accountability policy will not be surprised at the power of local implementers in modifying accountability efforts, Kentucky's street-level debate splits two constituencies in defining a fair system. Advocates for the education of all children including the poor and minorities support the continuous improvement model, while elite advocates support recognition of relative standing of schools. This paper includes data from teachers and administrators in four schools identified as eligible for state assistance under Kentucky's testing and accountability system. Of particular interest are the perceptions of accountability held by teachers and administrators in one school that had received …

National Association Of Rc&D Councils (Narc&Dc) Report: Rc&D Survey Of Agroforestry Practices

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

This report summarizes the results of a national survey on agroforestry that was completed by Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Councils during the summer of 1999. The survey was designed to determine the extent and geographic location of agroforestry throughout the United States. Maps and graphs are used to illustrate where agroforestry practices are being used, where RC&D Councils are involved in agroforestry projects, and where there are opportunities to apply more agroforestry. It also suggests what types of assistance will be needed to enable landowners and support agencies to better advance the adoption of agroforestry.

Agroforestry is the integration …

The Role Of Questioning: Beyond Comprehension's Front Door, Lane Roy Gauthier Apr 2000

The Role Of Questioning: Beyond Comprehension's Front Door, Lane Roy Gauthier

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Activities involving questions are a time-honored practice in literacy instruction. Since the beginnings of American education, historical accounts of classroom procedures have included various descriptions of the ways in which questions were made a part of almost every literacy lesson. Whether requiring answers involving rote memory or the activation of higher level critical thinking processes, the role of questions in literacy instruction has always been strong. This article presents a six-step strategy for questioning followed by a field-tested group of fifth graders' responses to each step.

Wake-Up Call: Using The Washington Shoreline Management Act To Protect The Shorelines Of Puget Sound From High-Speed Vessel Wake Wash, Cory J. Albright Apr 2000

Wake-Up Call: Using The Washington Shoreline Management Act To Protect The Shorelines Of Puget Sound From High-Speed Vessel Wake Wash, Cory J. Albright

Washington Law Review

Wake wash from high-speed vessels such as the Chinook passenger ferry accelerates erosion, destroys kelp and shellfish beds, and endangers recreational boaters in Puget Sound. The Washington Shoreline Management Act (SMA) grants the Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE) and local governments authority to regulate water uses in order to protect the shoreline environment. The federal Coastal Zone Management Act echoes this policy and mandates federal-state cooperation in the development and protection of the coastal zone. Although the U.S. Coast Guard traditionally regulates vessel traffic in Puget Sound pursuant to Title I of the Ports and Waterways Safety Act, the …

Comparison Of Larval Myomere Counts Among Species Of Nocomis In Virginia (Actinopterygii: Cyprinidae), Terre D. Green, Eugene G. Maurakis Apr 2000

Comparison Of Larval Myomere Counts Among Species Of Nocomis In Virginia (Actinopterygii: Cyprinidae), Terre D. Green, Eugene G. Maurakis

Virginia Journal of Science

Larval myomere counts of Nocomis platyrhynchus were made using a dissecting light microscope equipped with polarizing filters, and then compared to those of the three other species of Nocomis (Nocomis leptocephalus, Nocomis micropogon, and Nocomis raneyi) found in Virginia. Average preanal myomere counts for N. platyrhynchus (26.9) were significantly different from those of the other three species (N. raneyi =28.7; N. micropogon =26.0; and N. leptocephalus =25.9). This is especially important as larvae of N. leptocephalus, the only other species of Nocomis syntopic with N. platyrhynchus in the upper New River drainage, can now …
