Planning For Beef Cattle Operations In The Face Of Drought, Richard T. Clark May 2000

Planning For Beef Cattle Operations In The Face Of Drought, Richard T. Clark

Cornhusker Economics

Parts of Nebraska are extremely dry. Even timely rains are not likely to result in normal crop and grass production on non-irrigated ground. Livestock operations dependent on grass from April through the remainder of the year are greatly susceptible to problems. Below normal grass production will mean lower carrying capacities. Rainfall shortage may also impact livestock drinking water in areas with shallow wells and areas that depend on small earthen dams. Early planning usually offers more options since the options are often time dependent. But late planning is better than no planning.

Estimation Of Genetic Variance In Corn From F1 Performance With And Without Pedigree Relationships Among Inbred Lines, C. M. Bromley, L. Dale Van Vleck, B. E. Johnson, O. S. Smith May 2000

Estimation Of Genetic Variance In Corn From F1 Performance With And Without Pedigree Relationships Among Inbred Lines, C. M. Bromley, L. Dale Van Vleck, B. E. Johnson, O. S. Smith

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Estimates of genetic variance are needed for ranking of inbred lines for selection and for prediction of response to selection. The objectives of this study were to determine whether including relationships among inbred lines affects estimates of genetic variance and whether random association among inbred lines mated together affects estimates. Genetic variance was estimated with different models with restricted maximum likelihood for eight traits from matings of inbred lines from two heterotic groups (Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic, SSS, and unrelated to SSS, NSSS) of corn (Zea mays L.). For each comparison relationships among one or both of the inbred …

Phytochemical Comparison Of Puccinellia Arctica To Poa Pratensis, Puccinellia Langeana, And Puccinellia Phryganodes For Evidence Of Chemical Defense, Trent Joseph Volz May 2000

Phytochemical Comparison Of Puccinellia Arctica To Poa Pratensis, Puccinellia Langeana, And Puccinellia Phryganodes For Evidence Of Chemical Defense, Trent Joseph Volz

Plant, Animal and Soil Sciences

Puccinellia arctica is a species of arctic grass that is unpalatable to Canada geese, Branta canadensis, and may be an effective and non-lethal means of controlling the growing populations of urban Canada geese that are problematic in many areas of North America. The secondary metabolite profile of P. arctica was compared to the metabolite profiles of three palatable grass species to determine the plausibility that P. arctica is chemically defended. The volatile and non-volatile secondary metabolite profiles of both P. arctica and the palatable grasses were the same. No alkoloids were detected in any of the grasses. Condensed tannin levels …

"The Winter's Tale": Leontes' Derangement And The Chronotope Of Melancholy, David Houston Wood May 2000

"The Winter's Tale": Leontes' Derangement And The Chronotope Of Melancholy, David Houston Wood

English

To recent critical formulations regarding melancholy and its role in the Renaissance humoral body, this project contributes the argument that melancholy's trajectory from its natural to its unnatural state carries with it a fundamental shift in temporal-senses. I illustrate this shift through close analysis of Leontes' derangement in Shakespeare's 'The winter's tale.' Based on Renaissance physiological texts, as well as modern psychoanalytic, anthropological, and gender studies, I explore how melancholy's inherent volatility signifies the masculine anxieties of early modern English patriarchy. I argue that melancholy's bifurcated temporal-senses serve to clarify the subjectivity of Renaissancee passions.

Mammalian Mismatch Repair: Hotspots And Protein Complexes, Nancy Matton May 2000

Mammalian Mismatch Repair: Hotspots And Protein Complexes, Nancy Matton

Biological Sciences

Deficiencies in DNA mismatch repair have been found in hereditary cancers as well as in sporadic cancers, illustrating the importance of mismatch repair in maintaining genomic integrity. To determine if inefficient mismatch repair can contribute to hotspots of mutation, repair rates were determined 'in vivo' in mammalian cells for mismatched nucleotides located at H-ras codon 10 and compared to previously determined repair rates at a nearby activating hotspot of mutation, H-ras codon 12. Repair rates for H-ras codon 10 are significantly improved over repair rates at codon 12. This indicates that inefficiencies in mismatch repair are responsible, at least in …

Where Everything Is Music: The Influence Of Arthur Schopenhauer On Frederic And Kate Chopin, Bernard H. Oakley May 2000

Where Everything Is Music: The Influence Of Arthur Schopenhauer On Frederic And Kate Chopin, Bernard H. Oakley

English

The influence of Arthur Schopenhauer's aesthetic philosophy on Harold Frederic's "The damnation of Theron Ware" and Kate Chopin's "The awakening" is studied. Although Chopin's indebtedness to Schopenhauer is well established, the influence on Frederic's novel has not yet been revealed. This thesis develops "original readings of 'The damnation of Theron Ware' that challenge and clarify existing interpretations."

Maximizing Qiviut Growth In Muskoxen, Morgan A. Robertson May 2000

Maximizing Qiviut Growth In Muskoxen, Morgan A. Robertson

Biological Sciences

Qiviut, the insulating underwool grown annually by muskoxen, is the basis of a successful knitting industry in Alaska. This study tested the hypothesis that the dietary sulfur-amino acid methionine could limit qiviut growth. Effects of commercial rumen-protected methionine supplements were measured in three experiments. In Experiment 1, emergent qiviut growth began in May and June, peaked in August and declined substantially by October. Three commercial methionine supplements were palatable and promoted fiber growth in subadult and adult muskoxen. In Experiment 2, the methionine supplement Smartamine promoted qiviut quality, growth, annual yield and strength. In a commercial enterprise, Experiment 3, Smartamine …

Population Dynamics And Ecology Of Yellow-Cheeked Voles (Microtus Xanthognathus) In Early Post-Fire Seres Of Interior Alaska, Karin Linnaea Lehmkuhl May 2000

Population Dynamics And Ecology Of Yellow-Cheeked Voles (Microtus Xanthognathus) In Early Post-Fire Seres Of Interior Alaska, Karin Linnaea Lehmkuhl

Biological Sciences

Yellow-cheeked voles occupy early successional habitats in boreal regions, but specific factors influencing the species' distribution and population dynamics are not well known. Yellow-cheeked voles were studied in three early post-fire habitats in interior Alaska to relate population parameters to habitat characteristics. Voles were live-trapped during June, July, and August of 1997 and 1998, and habitat components were measured withing trapping grids. Capture data were analyzed using the robust design to estimate vole abundance, density, survival, and recruitment. Yellow-cheeked voles were most abundant in the floodplain white spruce, where survival was stable and recruitment was high. The white spruce habitat …

Analysis Of The Vocalizations Of Orcinus Orca In Response To Anthropogenic Noise, Carolyn Elizabeth Talus May 2000

Analysis Of The Vocalizations Of Orcinus Orca In Response To Anthropogenic Noise, Carolyn Elizabeth Talus

Fisheries

Underwater noise created by vessel traffic in the world's oceans may be detrimental to marine life that relies on acoustic senses for survival. An analytical study was completed which examined changes in vocal behavior of subpod A36, killer whales (Orcinus orca) that reside off Vancouver Island. The average call rate of each call type was calculated from the recordings, and call rates were found to significantly decrease in the presence of vessel noise. Structural characteristics of specific call types such as differences in frequency, duration, and harmonics were also examined and statistically compared with and without boat noise. Differences found …

Modeling Life Stage Dynamics Of Pseudocalanus Spp. (Copepoda: Calanoida) From Prince William Sound, Alaska, Natalia M. Pintchouk May 2000

Modeling Life Stage Dynamics Of Pseudocalanus Spp. (Copepoda: Calanoida) From Prince William Sound, Alaska, Natalia M. Pintchouk

Fisheries

A stage at age 1D numerical model (SAGE) was developed to describe reproduction, development, and growth of a group of neritic copepods Pseudocalanus spp., and to predict structure and demography of this group. The model tests the relative importance of female abundance, temperature and food on productivity. During spring and the beginning of the summer, stage-specific abundance data from one location in Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska were available to evaluate the reproductive timing and provide model validation. Development of Pseudocalanus spp. was modelled as synchronous, without overlapping broods. Molting costs and assimilation efficiency were estimated from literature data on …

Inhibition Of Listeria In Cold-Smoked Salmon Using Liquid Smoke And Isoeugenol, Susan M. Vitt May 2000

Inhibition Of Listeria In Cold-Smoked Salmon Using Liquid Smoke And Isoeugenol, Susan M. Vitt

Fisheries

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen, ubiquitous in nature and sometimes found in seafood. Cold-smoked salmon products have few barriers to inhibit pathogen growth. This study investigated the antilisterial effects of liquid smoke and the phenolic compound isoeugenol. Five commercial liquid smokes were tested 'in vitro' and the most inhibitory to Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115 and L. innocua ATCC 33090 was Charsol Supreme. Chum salmon samples (100-g each) were dipped for 15 seconds at varying concentrations of liquid smoke, processed, and analyzed for L. innocua. Liquid smoke concentrations of 60-100% reduced L. innocua by 3-logs in the final product. Dwell …

Effect Of Receptor-Selective Retinoids On Growth And Differentiation Pathways In Mouse Melanoma Cells, Sejal H. Desai, Goran Boskovic, Linda L. Eastham, Marcia Dawson, Richard M. Niles May 2000

Effect Of Receptor-Selective Retinoids On Growth And Differentiation Pathways In Mouse Melanoma Cells, Sejal H. Desai, Goran Boskovic, Linda L. Eastham, Marcia Dawson, Richard M. Niles

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Treatment of B16 mouse melanoma cells with all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) results in inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of differentiation. Accompanying these events is an induction of retinoic acid receptor β (RARβ) expression, an increase in protein kinase Cα (PKCα) expression, and enhanced activator protein-1 (AP-1) transcriptional activity. These cells express nuclear RARα and RARγ and nuclear retinoid X receptors (RXR) α and β constitutively. We tested the ability of receptor-selective retinoids to induce the biochemical changes found in ATRA-treated melanoma cells and also tested their effectiveness in decreasing anchorage-dependent and -independent growth. The RXR-selective ligand (2E,4E)-6-(5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-3,5,5,8,8-pentamethyl-2-naphthalenyl)-3,7-dimethyl-2,4,6-octatrienoic acid (SR11246) was …

Comparison Of Plasma Fsh Concentration In Boars And Gilts From Lines Selected For Ovulation Rate And Embryonal Survival, And Litter Size And Estimation Of (Co)Variance Components For Fsh And Ovulation Rate, R. K. Johnson, J. J. Ford

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objective of this research was to determine whether plasma concentration of FSH was genetically correlated with ovulation rate and thus was a useful trait for indirect selection. Blood samples were collected from 619 animals from five lines of pigs. Line I was selected for increased index of ovulation rate and embryonal survival, and Line C was its randomly selected control. Pigs sampled from Lines I and C were from generations 12 and 13. Pigs from three additional lines that were derived from eighth-generation pigs of Lines I and C also were used. These lines were Line C2, a randomly …
