Women In First Corinthians: A Perspective On Paul, Carole Gruener May 2000

Women In First Corinthians: A Perspective On Paul, Carole Gruener

Seminary Masters Theses

As women struggle for acceptance as leaders within the Christian community there is no more controversial teachings about women found in the Bible than those of the apostle Paul. In one breath he writes to the church in Galatians, "There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male or female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus" (Ga1.3: 28 NRSV). When taken at face value this passage eliminates ethnic, social and gender barriers; in this verse Paul recognizes and addresses the dignity and worth of all humanity.

Efflux Of Osmolyte Amino Acids During Isovolumic Regulation In Hippocampal Slices, Rodrigo Franco, Octavio Quesada, Herminia Pasantes-Morales May 2000

Efflux Of Osmolyte Amino Acids During Isovolumic Regulation In Hippocampal Slices, Rodrigo Franco, Octavio Quesada, Herminia Pasantes-Morales

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The efflux of potassium (K+) and amino acids from hippocampal slices was measured after sudden exposure to 10% (270 mOsm), 25% (225 mOsm) or 50% (150 mOsm) hyposmotic solutions or after gradual decrease (22.5 mOsm/min) in external osmolarity. In slices suddenly exposed to 50% hyposmotic solutions, swelling was followed by partial (74%) cell volume recovery, suggesting regulatory volume decrease (RVD). With gradual hyposmotic changes, no increase in cell water content was observed even when the solution at the end of the experiment was 50% hyposmotic, showing the occurrence of isovolumic regulation (IVR). The gradual decrease in osmolarity elicited …

Bias In Genetic Evaluations By Records Of Cows Treated With Bovine Somatotropin, S. Tsuruta, Jeffrey F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck, I. Misztal May 2000

Bias In Genetic Evaluations By Records Of Cows Treated With Bovine Somatotropin, S. Tsuruta, Jeffrey F. Keown, L. Dale Van Vleck, I. Misztal

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Records from Dairy Records Management Systems in Raleigh were used to estimate effects of bovine somatotropin (bST) treatment and to predict breeding values for milk production traits. The data comprised 5245 test-day records of bST-treated cows and 126,223 test-day records of untreated cows in first lactation for milk, fat, and protein yields. Fixed effects of bST treatment were estimated from test-day animal models with herd-test-date as another fixed factor. Percentage increases due to bST treatment ranged from 7 to 8% for test-day milk, fat, and protein yields. Random regression coefficients for additive genetic and permanent environmental effects were included in …

Determination Of The Wavelength Dependence On The Metal Catalyzed Degradation Of The Herbicide Atrazine, Timothy Bertram May 2000

Determination Of The Wavelength Dependence On The Metal Catalyzed Degradation Of The Herbicide Atrazine, Timothy Bertram

Honors Theses

Since the advent of modern herbicide use in the early twentieth century, researchers have been plagued with the obvious problem of herbicide disposal. Most herbicides are specifically designed to resist natural degradation processes so that they can remain effective in the field for a substantial amount of time. In addition, they are also made water soluble so that they can be easily applied to crops. Finally, they are specifically produced to kill undesirable plant species in the quickest and often crudest fashions. Due to these specific properties herbicides pose a general threat to other organisms living in the same geographic …

Concepts Of Science Fiction In Graphic Design: Concepts Of Science Fiction Applied To Graphic Design Problem Solving, Nawarat Teeraprasert May 2000

Concepts Of Science Fiction In Graphic Design: Concepts Of Science Fiction Applied To Graphic Design Problem Solving, Nawarat Teeraprasert

Theses

This thesis examines how the futuristic ideas in science fiction literature can be applied to graphic design. The paradigm that creates the connection between mind and emotion in science fiction, such as recurring images, pattern, space and time can be described as signifiers, the triggers of imagination, which can also function in graphic design as object orientation. By combining elements and models within science fiction systems with the theory of perception, a new approach to graphic design problem solving will be created.

Asiatic Cholera And Dysentery On The Oregon Trail: A Historical Medical Geography Study, Brian Lee Altonen May 2000

Asiatic Cholera And Dysentery On The Oregon Trail: A Historical Medical Geography Study, Brian Lee Altonen

Dissertations and Theses

Two disease regions existed on the Oregon Trail. Asiatic cholera impacted the Platte River flood plain from 1849 to 1852. Dysentery developed two endemic foci due to the decay of buffalo carcasses in eastern and middle Nebraska between 1844 and 1848, but later developed a much larger endemic region west of this Great Plains due to the infection of livestock carcasses by opportunistic bacteria.

This study demonstrates that whereas Asiatic cholera diffusion along the Trail was defined primarily by human population features, topography, and regional climate along the Platte River flood plain, the distribution of opportunistic dysentery along the Trail …

Excessive Yawning And Ssri Therapy, Mark D. Beale, Timothy M. Murphree May 2000

Excessive Yawning And Ssri Therapy, Mark D. Beale, Timothy M. Murphree

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

As we become more experienced with the long-term use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), more subtle side-effects may become evident. Clinicians may be aware of yawning as a side-effect of antidepressant therapy, however sparse literature exists on the topic. We present two cases in which excessive daytime yawning was associated with SSRI treatment.
