Host-Derived Signals For Inducing Isoprenoid Gene Expression And Uses Thereof, Joseph Chappell, Marcos Lusso May 2000

Host-Derived Signals For Inducing Isoprenoid Gene Expression And Uses Thereof, Joseph Chappell, Marcos Lusso

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

Disclosed is a method for preparing a composition that is capable of activating the expression of a gene involved in the synthesis of an isoprenoid, the method involving: (a) contacting a plant cell with an elicitor under conditions that allow an elicitor-induced release of a compound that activates the synthesis of an isoprenoid; and (b) recovering a composition including the compound, wherein the compound is diffusible and has a molecular weight less than or equal to 10,000 daltons. Also disclosed is a substantially pure elicitor-induced composition, the composition being capable of activating a gene involved in the synthesis of a …

Lethal Control Of Piscivorous Birds At Aquaculture Facilities In The Northeast United States: Effects On Populations, Bradley F. Blackwell, Richard A. Dolbeer, Laura A. Tyson May 2000

Lethal Control Of Piscivorous Birds At Aquaculture Facilities In The Northeast United States: Effects On Populations, Bradley F. Blackwell, Richard A. Dolbeer, Laura A. Tyson

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Predation by piscivorous birds is considered a substantial threat to the aquaculture industry. However, lethal control of birds at aquaculture facilities has raised concerns about the effects on the distribution and abundance of populations of the species killed. We examined the relationship between numbers of piscivorous birds reported killed under U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) permits at aquaculture facilities in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania and species population trends within the respective states. The USFWS issued 26 permits to 9 facilities from 1985 through September 1997. Eight species appeared on permits, but only six species were reported killed: …

Method Of Removing Carbon From Fly Ash, Robert William Styron, Jiann-Yangg Hwang May 2000

Method Of Removing Carbon From Fly Ash, Robert William Styron, Jiann-Yangg Hwang

Michigan Tech Patents

A froth flotation method is provided for removing carbon from fly ash which utilizes an environmental friendly conditioning agent. The conditioning agent preferably comprises a biodegradable oil which is added to a slurry containing raw fly ash and water. The conditioning agent renders the carbon in the fly ash hydrophobic such that upon aeration of the slurry, air bubbles attach to the carbon particles and carry' them to the surface of the slurry in the form of a froth, such that the carbon may be removed.

A Gis Model To Predict The Location Of Fossil Packrat (Neotoma) Middens In Central Nevada, Scott A. Mensing, Robert G. Elston Jr., Gary L. Raines, Robin J. Tausch, Cheryl L. Nowak May 2000

A Gis Model To Predict The Location Of Fossil Packrat (Neotoma) Middens In Central Nevada, Scott A. Mensing, Robert G. Elston Jr., Gary L. Raines, Robin J. Tausch, Cheryl L. Nowak

Western North American Naturalist

Fossil packrat (Neotoma) middens provide an important source of paleoecologic data in the arid West. This study describes and tests a predictive GIS model that uses the eights-of-evidence method for determining areas with a high probability of containing fossil middens in central Nevada. Model variables included geology, elevation, and aspect. Geology was found to be the most important variable tested. We produced a map of 4 probability classes validated by field-checking 21 randomly selected 1-km2 sites throughout the study area. Our high-probability category reduced the search area to only 3.5% of the total study area. Fossil middens …

Managing Livestock Grazing For Mule Deer (Odocoileus Hemionus) On Winter Range In The Great Basin, Dennis D. Austin

Western North American Naturalist

History and technical literature describing potential effects of livestock grazing on mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) populations and winter range habitat are reviewed. Recommendations for livestock grazing on winter ranges within the Great Basin are advanced.

The Relationship Between Companion Animals And Health Status Among Older Adults Living In The Community, Agnes M. Eytchison May 2000

The Relationship Between Companion Animals And Health Status Among Older Adults Living In The Community, Agnes M. Eytchison

Master's Projects

A study was conducted on 18 older adult pet owners and non-pet owners residing in a mobile home park to determine self-perception of health status and the level of attachment to pets. Self-reported health status was high and equal for both pet owners and non-pet owners. The level of attachment to the pets was also high. Studies have demonstrated human-animal interactions being beneficial to both individuals and families; but for many residents of mobile home parks and common interest developments, such as condominiums and townhouses, rules prevent companion animal ownership. Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) aware of the benefits of animal …

Effects Of Cattle Grazing On North American Arid Ecosystems: A Quantitative Review, Allison Jones May 2000

Effects Of Cattle Grazing On North American Arid Ecosystems: A Quantitative Review, Allison Jones

Western North American Naturalist

A quantitative review was conducted of the effects of cattle grazing in arid systems on 16 response variables ranging from soil bulk density to total vegetative cover to rodent species diversity. Various studies from North American arid environments that used similar measures for assessing grazing effects on the same response variables were used for the review; each study was assigned to serve as a single data point in paired comparisons of grazed versus ungrazed sites. All analyses tested the 1-tailed null hypothesis that grazing has no effect on the measured variable. Eleven of 16 analyses (69%) revealed significant detrimental effects …

Importance Of Migrating Salmon Smolt In Ring-Billed (Larus Delawarensis) And California Gull (L. Californicus) Diets Near Priest Rapids Dam, Washington, Darryl L. York, John L. Cummings, John E. Steuber, Patricia A. Pochop, Christi A. Yoder May 2000

Importance Of Migrating Salmon Smolt In Ring-Billed (Larus Delawarensis) And California Gull (L. Californicus) Diets Near Priest Rapids Dam, Washington, Darryl L. York, John L. Cummings, John E. Steuber, Patricia A. Pochop, Christi A. Yoder

Western North American Naturalist

Ring-billed (Larus delawarensis) and California Gulls (L. californicus) have been implicated in depredations on migrating salmon smolt in the Columbia River. As part of a gull management program conducted in 1995 and 1996, we collected L. delawarensis (n = 120) and L. californicus (n = 45) near Priest Rapids Dam, Washington, and analyzed stomach contents to determine food habits and thus the importance of fish in gull diets. Percent volume measurements and index of relative importance rankings suggested a greater reliance on fish by L. californicus than by L. delawarensis. Peak percent consumption …

Women In First Corinthians: A Perspective On Paul, Carole Gruener May 2000

Women In First Corinthians: A Perspective On Paul, Carole Gruener

Seminary Masters Theses

As women struggle for acceptance as leaders within the Christian community there is no more controversial teachings about women found in the Bible than those ofthe apostle Paul. In one breath he writes to the church in Galatians, "There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male or female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus" (Gal.3: 28 NRSV). When taken at face value this passage eliminates ethnic, social and gender barriers; in this verse Paul recognizes and addresses the dignity and worth of all humanity.
