Relationships Between Land Cover Change And Breeding Birds In Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Daniel Mark Hoffman Jun 2000

Relationships Between Land Cover Change And Breeding Birds In Kalamazoo County, Michigan, Daniel Mark Hoffman

Masters Theses

Effective conservation planning of breeding birds requires knowledge of responses to landscape change and pattern. This study analyzed associations between land cover type and change among three ecological groups, forest birds, shrubland birds, and grassland birds using Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data for Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Land cover maps for the years 1974 and 1996 were produced to assess land cover changes for BBS data from the period 1970-1996. The Pearson coefficient of correlation was used to correlate land cover type percent within BBS radii and the total birds of a bird group observed within each radius. Conclusions of the …

Vocabulary Growth In Late Talkers: Lexical Development From 2;0 To 3;0, Leslie Rescorla, Jennifer Mirak, Leher Singh

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Vocabulary growth from 2;0 to 3;0 was studied in 28 late talkers using expressive vocabulary inventories reported bimonthly on the Language Development Survey (LDS). Group milestones were 18 words at 2;0, 89 words at 2;6, and 195 words at 3;0. A sub-group of 11 children (Group I) showed a rapid vocabulary spurt between 2;2 and 2;8, reached the 150-180 word mark by 2;6, and attained the LDS ceiling of about 300 words by 2;10. In contrast, the 17 children in Group 2 still had a mean vocabulary of fewer than 30 words at 2;6, had less of a vocabulary spurt …

Clinical Characteristic Of Amoebic Liver Abscesses In The North Of Iraq, Fouad A. Baban

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to find out the clinical characteristic of amoebic liver abscesses in this area, the simplest method for diagnosis and to determine the effectiveness of treatment by metronidazole therapy proved by disappearance of symptoms and regression in the size of the abscesses by ultrasound. METHODS: We studied prospectively all cases of suspected liver abscesses admitted to our unit over 2 years (1990 & 1991). A special case sheet was prepared. Daily follow up of patients was carried out in hospital for at least 10 days. Patients were later followed up by ultrasound after discharge. …

Macroevolution In Microchiroptera: Recoupling Morphology And Ecology With Phylogeny, Patricia W. Freeman Jun 2000

Macroevolution In Microchiroptera: Recoupling Morphology And Ecology With Phylogeny, Patricia W. Freeman

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

No family of mammals has undergone a greater adaptive radiation than phyllostomid bats. Phylogeny combined with eco-morphological considerations of trophic structures can help understand this adaptive radiation and the evolution of Microchiroptera. Microchiropteran bats are overwhelmingly insectivorous, and constraints within the morphospace of insectivory have produced a dynamic equilibrium in bat morphologies that has persisted for 60 million years. The ability to eat fruit may be the key synapomorphy that allowed phyllostomids to escape insectivore morphospace and diversify. Although many phyllostomids have changed greatly, others that have maintained insectivory have changed little, which is equally remarkable.

Reflections On Scientific And Religious Metaphor, Ursula Goodenough Jun 2000

Reflections On Scientific And Religious Metaphor, Ursula Goodenough

Biology Faculty Research

The importance of scientific conflicts for theology and philosophy is difficult to judge. In many disputes of significance, prominent scientists can be found on both sides. Profound philosophical and religious implications are sometimes said to be implied by the new theory as well. This article examines the dispute over natural selection between Richard Dawkins and Stephen Jay Gould as a contemporary instance of such a conflict. While both claim that profound philosophical conclusions flow from their own alternative account of evolution, I suggest that the implication is not as great as is claimed and that the alleged implications have as …

Exploitation-The Invisible Hand Guided By A Blind Eye: Confronting A Flaw In Economic Theory, Phillip Dybicz Jun 2000

Exploitation-The Invisible Hand Guided By A Blind Eye: Confronting A Flaw In Economic Theory, Phillip Dybicz

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Economics is alone among the social science disciplines in failing to have a sound theory to explain behaviors when people do not act according to their self-interest, that is, with compassion. This has resulted in a fundamental flaw in economic thought. As economies have grown in scale and complexity, there has been a corresponding distancing between consumers and producers. This flaw has revealed itself through a lack of economic structures which bridge this distance, restore a level of intimacy within the economic interaction, and hence facilitate the expression of compassion.

Standing In Environmental Citizen Suits: Laidlaw’S Clarification Of The Injury-In-Fact And Redressability Requirements, Michael P. Healy Jun 2000

Standing In Environmental Citizen Suits: Laidlaw’S Clarification Of The Injury-In-Fact And Redressability Requirements, Michael P. Healy

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

In its first week of business during the new millennium, the U.S. Supreme Court decided Friends of the Earth, Inc. v. Laidlaw Environmental Services (TOC), Inc., and provided important clarifications about the law of standing in environmental citizen suits. Specifically, the Court rejected the narrow view of environmental injury-in-fact advocated by Justice Scalia and instead adhered to the broader view of injury-in-fact established in a nonenvironmental context by the Court's decision in Federal Elections Commission v. Akins. As importantly, the Court also addressed the redressability requirement of Article III standing in Laidlaw. Here too, the Court did …

Assessment Of Methylphenidate Sensitization Using A Two-Lever Drug Discrimination Procedure, Ann Marie Heidema Jun 2000

Assessment Of Methylphenidate Sensitization Using A Two-Lever Drug Discrimination Procedure, Ann Marie Heidema

Masters Theses

The current study examined the effects of methylphenidate (MP) pre-exposure on the acquisition of cocaine discrimination in rats. Sixteen male Sprague-Dawley rats were administered either 10 mg/kg MP or saline for five consecutive days. Following this pre-treatment phase, animals were trained to discriminate 10 mg/kg cocaine-hydrochloride from saline using a two-lever fixed-ratio 20 (FR20) schedule of food reinforcement. Acquisition of cocaine discrimination, as indicated by the number of sessions to criterion, did not differ significantly between the two-pre-treatment groups (MP = 35.5 ± 2.4; SAL = 31.6 ± 2.3). Stimulus generalization tests were conducted with cocaine and methylphenidate using cumulative …

Gentle Nudges Vs. Hard Shoves: Solving The Sticky Norms Problem, Dan M. Kahan Jun 2000

Gentle Nudges Vs. Hard Shoves: Solving The Sticky Norms Problem, Dan M. Kahan

University of Chicago Law Review

The resistance of law enforcers sometimes confounds the efforts of lawmakers to change social norms. Thus, as legislators expand liability for date rape, domestic violence, and drunk driving, police become less likely to arrest, prosecutors to charge, jurors to convict, and judges to sentence severely. The conspicuous resistance of these decisionmakers in turn reinforces the norms that lawmakers intended to change. Can this "sticky norms" pathology be effectively treated? It can be, this Article argues, if lawmakers apply "gentle nudges" rather than "hard shoves." When the law embodies a relatively mild degree of condemnation, the desire of most decisionmakers to …

Whatever Shines: Poems, Kathleen Mcgookey Jun 2000

Whatever Shines: Poems, Kathleen Mcgookey

Dissertations

The poems in my manuscript can be divided into two groups: poems in verse and prose poems. The majority are prose poems. Though I did not set out to write in the prose poem form, I’ve become more and more attracted to it, eventually seeking what Baudelaire sought when he wrote the poems in Le Spleen de Paris, a poetic prose "musical without rhythm or rhyme, supple enough and shocking enough to adapt itself to lyrical movements of the soul, undulations of the reverie, sudden leaps of conscience." Charles Simic believes prose poems contain a tension between the lyric impulse …

Bernard Lonergan On A Catholic Liberal Arts Education, Richard M. Liddy

Journal of Catholic Education

With a call for integration commonly expected in liberal arts education, this article explores the philosophy of Bernard Lonergan. Highly specialized disciplines, as valuable as they are to preserving and expanding a professional knowledge base, can nonetheless lead to the extreme compartmentalization of education. This article offers a philosophical foundation on which to build a truly Catholic liberal arts education.

Affective Responses To Television Newscasts: Have You Heard The News?, Jessica Purtan Harrell Jun 2000

Affective Responses To Television Newscasts: Have You Heard The News?, Jessica Purtan Harrell

Dissertations

This study examined the impact o f television news viewing on affective responses in viewers. Participants watched a 10-minute newscast that contained only negative, only positive, or both negative and positive news stories at either 8:00 a.m. or 6:00 p.m. Negative news viewers showed elevations in anxiety and negative affect, while positive news viewers showed decreases in anxiety and negative affect. Watching a combined newscast resulted in no mood changes. Affective changes caused by watching the news were not maintained 3 hours after viewing, and morning versus evening viewing had no impact on mood responses to that news. While news …

The Relationship Between Homophopia And Fear-Of-Intimacy In Heterosexual College Students, Bonnie S. Wilke Jun 2000

The Relationship Between Homophopia And Fear-Of-Intimacy In Heterosexual College Students, Bonnie S. Wilke

Theses

This thesis explores the relationship between homophobia and fear-of-intimacy in heterosexual college students, with a focus on gender differences. The study builds upon existing research suggesting that men often display higher levels of homophobia and fear-of-intimacy, potentially due to gender role socialization, cultural expectations, and psychosocial development patterns. Using Erikson's theory of psychosocial development and various social and psychological frameworks, the author hypothesizes that homophobia may act as a barrier to intimacy, especially in men.

A sample of 65 heterosexual undergraduate and graduate students (23 males and 43 females) from a Midwestern private university participated in the study. Participants completed …

Expression And Requirement Of Epithelial Fatty Acid- Binding Protein In Neuronal Axon Growth, Gregory William Allen Jun 2000

Expression And Requirement Of Epithelial Fatty Acid- Binding Protein In Neuronal Axon Growth, Gregory William Allen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Epithelial fatty acid-binding protein (E-FABP) is expressed in the dorsal root ganglia following sciatic nerve injury and in migrating and differentiating neurons during neuronal development. It was hypothesized that E-FABP expression is required for the robust outgrowth of axons from developing and regenerating neurons. To test this hypothesis, E-FABP expression in both PC12 cells and primary retinal neurons was examined. In PC12 cells, NGF induces E-FABP mRNA and protein during the period of neurite outgrowth, and E-FABP localizes to the perinuclear cytoplasm, nucleus, and growth cone. Furthermore, E-FABP-deficient cell lines exposed to NGF were less differentiated and had shorter neurites …

Molecular Cloning Of The Cdna For Porcine Parotid Hormone, Qian Zhang Jun 2000

Molecular Cloning Of The Cdna For Porcine Parotid Hormone, Qian Zhang

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It has been found that parotid glands secrete a factor into blood that stimulates dentinal fluid movement, which in turn, prevents the development of dental caries. This factor, designated as parotid hormone, has been isolated from porcine parotid glands and its partial amino acid sequence has been determined. This study was developed to isolate and identify the cDNA sequence for porcine parotid hormone.

A porcine parotid cDNA library was constructed and hybridized with oligo probes designed based on the partial amino acid sequences of the isolated porcine parotid hormone. Over 100 positive clones were isolated and the complete nucleotide sequences …

Effects Of Pycnogenol On Microsomal Cytochrome P450 Activity And Apoptosis, Huong Thu Huynh Jun 2000

Effects Of Pycnogenol On Microsomal Cytochrome P450 Activity And Apoptosis, Huong Thu Huynh

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Phytochemicals are naturally-occurring compounds found in plants, many of which are consumed as nutritional supplements by humans. Pycnogenol is a mixture of flavonoid compounds extracted from bark of pine trees (Pinus maritima) and is commercially available in several different pharmaceutical preparations as a free radical scavenger.

Since few scientific studies have documented the pharmacologic effects of pycnogenol, our objective was to characterize the biological activity of pycnogenol. One study looked at the effects of pycnogenol on the three pathways of NNK metabolism: NNK reduction, N-oxidation and a-hydroxylation. NNK is a lung carcinogen. Lung and liver microsomes from 6 mo and …
