Biology For Feminists, Katharine K. Baker Jun 2000

Biology For Feminists, Katharine K. Baker

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Feminists and sociobiologists have more in common than many people realize. In this Essay, Baker argues that feminists can use insights from sociobiology to validate feminist theories about patriarchy and to bolster claims for a greater legal commitment to feminist normative agendas. Paying particular attention to the laws regarding rape, marriage, and parenthood, Baker shows how biology helps confirm what feminists have long argued about the law's inadequate protection of women. Moreover, she shows how biology helps demonstrate the keen need for feminist social norms that help alleviate the harms caused by nature's inequities.

An Interpretation Of The Significance Of Human Remains From The Caves Of The Southern Maya Lowlands, Sheryl A. Gibbs

KIP Theses and Dissertations

Caves in the Maya area have long been known to contain human remains. Unfortunately, very little has been offered in the way of interpretation. This analysis is aimed at shedding light on the questions surrounding the occurrence of human remains in caves of the Southern Maya lowlands.

Constructing Families In A Democracy: Courts, Legislatures And Second-Parent Adoption, Jane S. Schacter Jun 2000

Constructing Families In A Democracy: Courts, Legislatures And Second-Parent Adoption, Jane S. Schacter

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In this Essay, Schacter examines recent judicial decisions on so-called "second parent adoption," in which one partner in a gay or lesbian relationship seeks to adopt the other partner's child without terminating that partner's legal relationship with the child. With the recent boom of lesbian families in particular, the availability of such adoptions has been litigated in several states. Although the results have been uneven, this has been an area of significant progress for same-sex families, with courts in at least twenty-one states having authorized such adoptions. The appellate rulings in this area have been decisions involving statutory interpretation and …

High Profile Cases In A Technological Age, Susan Webber Wright Jun 2000

High Profile Cases In A Technological Age, Susan Webber Wright

Missouri Law Review

What I will try to describe this afternoon is the confluence of these two developments: the increased interest in courts, particularly the high-profile case, and the development and spread of sophisticated technology. As a social and public institution, the courts are obligated to address public demands not only by providing a forum for the administration of justice, but also by providing the means by which interested members of the public can observe court proceedings and gain access to public documents. I will describe some of the things courts are doing to respond to these demands. Next, I will try to …

Angiotensin Ii Promotes Atherosclerotic Lesions And Aneurysms In Apolipoprotein E-Deficient Mice, Alan Daugherty, Michael W. Manning, Lisa A. Cassis Jun 2000

Angiotensin Ii Promotes Atherosclerotic Lesions And Aneurysms In Apolipoprotein E-Deficient Mice, Alan Daugherty, Michael W. Manning, Lisa A. Cassis

Gill Heart & Vascular Institute Faculty Publications

Increased plasma concentrations of angiotension II (Ang II) have been implicated in atherogenesis. To examine this relationship directly, we infused Ang II or vehicle for 1 month via osmotic minipumps into mature apoE–/– mice. These doses of Ang II did not alter arterial blood pressure, body weight, serum cholesterol concentrations, or distribution of lipoprotein cholesterol. However, Ang II infusions promoted an increased severity of aortic atherosclerotic lesions. These Ang II–induced lesions were predominantly lipid-laden macrophages and lymphocytes; moreover, Ang II promoted a marked increase in the number of macrophages present in the adventitial tissue underlying lesions. Unexpectedly, pronounced abdominal …

Comments On D Branes And The Renormalization Group, Vatche Sahakian Jun 2000

Comments On D Branes And The Renormalization Group, Vatche Sahakian

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We review the de Boer-Verlinde-Verlinde formalism for the renormalization group in the context of Dp-brane vacua for p < 5. We comment on various aspects of the dictionary between bulk and boundary and relate the discussion to the Randall-Sundrum scenario. We find that the gravitational coupling for the Randall-Sundrum gravity on the Dp-brane worldvolume is dressed by the c-function of the Yang-Mills theory. We compute the beta function and find the expected uneventful flow prescribed by the classical dimension of the Yang-Mills operator.

A Taxonomic Evaluation Of The Comatulid Genus Stephanometra (Echinodermata:Crinoidea), Dana Lin Rankin Jun 2000

A Taxonomic Evaluation Of The Comatulid Genus Stephanometra (Echinodermata:Crinoidea), Dana Lin Rankin

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Several genera in the comatulid family Mariametridae are currently ambiguously distinguished on the basis of variations in length and robustness of oral pinnules. Previous descriptions have suggested that at least the genera Stephanometra and Lamprometra are imperfectly distinguishable. A detailed re-examination of morphology coupled with principal component analyses of morphometric data and cladistic analyses provide support for a monophyletic Stephanometra distinct from Lamprometra. A preliminary morphological analysis suggests that Dichrometra and Liparometra should be synonymized with Lamprometra. The six currently recognized species of Stephanometra uniquely share at least one pair of oral pinnules characterized by enlarged size, reduced ambulacral groove …

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1999-2000, Bruce Johnson, Brandon G.Y. Raddatz

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

Nebraska's agricultural real estate market conditions have been monitored and analyzed annually since 1978 by the Department of Agricultural Economics-UNL. In the most recent survey for 2000, the markets for agricultural land were found to have remained relatively unchanged over the past year, despite generally poor farm commodity prices. As of February 1st, 2000, the UNL survey showed the state all-land average value to be $698 per acre, a 1.1 percent increase from 12 months earlier. While the values for particular classes of land across the sub-state areas moved in both directions, the percentage changes from year-earlier levels were generally …

To Honor Impermanence: The Haiku And Other Poems Of Gerald Vizenor, Thomas Lynch Jun 2000

To Honor Impermanence: The Haiku And Other Poems Of Gerald Vizenor, Thomas Lynch

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Poems on a page bear a decidedly, yet deceptively, fixed being. The Western literary tradition (if I may invoke such a creature) has historically preferred fixed texts. Even when confronting slippery oral traditions, an enormous effort has been expended to canonize an originary Ur-form of each tale. Such a tendency, akin to mounting a bird species rather than pondering the flight of feathers, is the antagonist of Vizenor's poetic art. In what follows I seek to explore some of the ways Vizenor's haiku and longer poetry melt fixation and celebrate the transformative possibilities of impermanence.

Drag = Blackface, Kelly Kleiman Jun 2000

Drag = Blackface, Kelly Kleiman

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Performance in drag is indistinguishable conceptually from performance in blackface, yet the former is embraced while the latter is shunned. This Essay argues that the analogy is powerful enough to justify making drag performance anathema. It outlines the parallel features of the two modes of performance and then rebuts the com- mon defenses of drag performance-that drag subverts gender stereotypes, that it is a matter of private sexual compulsion, that it is a privileged activity of gay men, and that it's just a joke.

Pretrial Mediation Of Complex Scientific Cases: A Proposal To Reduce Jury And Judicial Confusion, Susan E. Cowell Jun 2000

Pretrial Mediation Of Complex Scientific Cases: A Proposal To Reduce Jury And Judicial Confusion, Susan E. Cowell

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Note proposes pretrial mediation using scientist-mediators for complex scientific disputes. Complex scientific disputes reflect the inherent tension between law and science. This tension results in dissatisfaction among judges, juries, and scientists because of the uncertainties embraced by science, but eschewed by law. Pretrial mediation would address some of these uncertainties before they are introduced into the courtroom. In short, the proposed pretrial mediation should reduce jury confusion and provide judges with guidance to assess the admissibility of scientific evidence and expert opinions by eliminating and clarifying scientific issues.

1. The Converse Mounds: New Research on Michigan's Greatest Hopewell Site By John R. Halsey State Archaeologist Michigan Historical Center Lansing

The Converse Mounds (20 Kt 2) lay on the west side of the Grand River in the City of Grand Rapids, Michigan. From the late 1850s to the the mid-1880s, the area containing the mounds was platted and developed. The mounds ironically bear the name of the most important early developer of this area, James W. “Deacon” Converse. During these “improvements” the mounds were leveled by construction crews, the fill was pushed into low areas, and the mounds disappeared. …

Points Against Postmodernism, Catharine A. Mackinnon Jun 2000

Points Against Postmodernism, Catharine A. Mackinnon

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In this Essay, MacKinnon pointedly contends with a central tropism in much postmodernism to "de-realize" reality, contrasting it with feminism's epistemic and legal accomplishments and potential in remaking the world for women.

Corporate Governance, Reputation And Competitive Credibility, N Balasubramanian, David Kimber

IIMB Management Review

The decade of the 1990s has perhaps seen the most profound changes in global economic structures. The effects of structural adjustment and globalisation, and the emergence of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) have meant that the role of business has dramatically changed throughout the world. Statistics of the number of corporations that are larger than nation states abound and only illustrate the importance of the corporate sector and its impact on the world order
