Ecological And Physiological Factors Affecting Nesting Success Of Burrowing Owls In Buffalo Gap National Grassland, Randall L. Griebel Dec 2000

Ecological And Physiological Factors Affecting Nesting Success Of Burrowing Owls In Buffalo Gap National Grassland, Randall L. Griebel

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The western burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia hypugea) has been declining throughout much of its range, and in some areas, quite dramatically. In the Great Plains region, these declines appear to be closely associated with declines in prairie dog numbers. Most research to date has taken place on relatively small, fragmented prairie dog colonies. The objectives of this study were to analyze burrowing owl reproductive performance (i.e., clutch size, brood size, and number fledged), and nestling body condition in relation to nest level and colony level factors in Buffalo Gap National Grassland, South Dakota. Buffalo Gap contains large prairie …

Bridging Physics And Communications: Experimental Detection And Analysis Of Web Site Users’ Paths In An Environment Of Free Choice, David M. Frye Dec 2000

Bridging Physics And Communications: Experimental Detection And Analysis Of Web Site Users’ Paths In An Environment Of Free Choice, David M. Frye

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

A role for professional communicators to play in a postmodern context is to work as an experimentalist, designing a system that supports users’ free engagement with the content of the system, inviting people to engage that system, observing the ways in which those engagements proceed, and from those observations, learning how to refine the system to support more fruitful future engagements. The role serves to cultivate an environment in which users’ conversations with one another and their interaction with the system’s content may thrive. This thesis purposes that the experimentalist is a useful and practical role for a communicator in the current …

The Design Of Supranational Organizations For The Provision Of International Public Goods: Global Environmental Protection, E. Wesley F. Peterson Dec 2000

The Design Of Supranational Organizations For The Provision Of International Public Goods: Global Environmental Protection, E. Wesley F. Peterson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

An international environmental organization would need to be loosely structured initially with a focus on a narrow range of environmental issues. It also would need to emphasize consensus and limit the scope of its interventions to avoid defections by important participants. The benefits of such an organization include the potential for achieving more nearly optimal levels of environmental protection, cost savings from reduction of duplication and managerial economies of scale, and the strengthening of environmental interests in negotiations on the coordination of the environmental regime with other international regimes such as those focusing on trade or development.

Tree Seedling Establishment With Protective Shelters And Irrigation Scheduling In Three Naturalized Landscapes In Utah, Roger Kjelgren, Neil Chapman, Larry Rupp Dec 2000

Tree Seedling Establishment With Protective Shelters And Irrigation Scheduling In Three Naturalized Landscapes In Utah, Roger Kjelgren, Neil Chapman, Larry Rupp

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

We investigated the effect of irrigation scheduling and tree shelters on survival and growth of nine tree species during first-year establishment in three naturalized Utah landscapes with divergent soil and climate. Seedlings of nine species were planted at high mountain [MTS; 2180 m(7150 ft)], mountain foothils [FTH; 1350 m (4430 ft)], and alkali desert [DES; 1320 m (4330 ft)] sites. Half the trees at each site were enclosed with transluscent plastic shelters after planting, and all tress were irrigated when water loss estimated from local evapotranspiration, depleted plant-available soil water. Tree condition was rated through the growing season, water potential …

Islam And The Death Penalty, William A. Schabas Dec 2000

Islam And The Death Penalty, William A. Schabas

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Capital punishment is not practiced by a majority of the world's states. Anti-capital punishment domestic policies have led to an international law of human rights that emphatically prohibits cruel and inhuman punishment. International concern for the abolition of capital punishment has prompted Islamic states that still endorse and practice the death penalty to respond with equally compelling concerns based on the tenets of Islamic law. Professor William A. Schabas suggests that Islamic states view capital punishment according to the principles embodied in the Koran. Islamic law functions on the belief that all people have a right to life unless the …

The Uses Of Aristotle In Garamer's Recovery Of Consultative Reasoning: Sunesis, Sungnômê, Epieikeia, And Sumbouleuesthai, P. Christopher Smith Dec 2000

The Uses Of Aristotle In Garamer's Recovery Of Consultative Reasoning: Sunesis, Sungnômê, Epieikeia, And Sumbouleuesthai, P. Christopher Smith

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Using Hans-Georg Gadamer's exposition of Aristotle's adjuncts to phronêsis, or the knowing that guides deliberation, namely understanding, forbearance, and clemency, this Article attempts to retrieve a communal reasoning still evident in Homer but increasingly covered over beginning with Plato and continuing through Hobbes and Locke, in the English-language tradition, and, more recently, Rawls and Toulmin. This Article shows that, in Gadamer's reading of him, Aristotle emerges as a crucial interruption of this tendency of Western thought to abstract from the communal origins of reasoning and to start instead from what an isolated individual sees for himself or herself and …

Law As Interpretation, Charles W. Collier Dec 2000

Law As Interpretation, Charles W. Collier

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Article situates the field of law within the interpretive disciplines and analyzes a number of key legal issues as problems of interpretation. The discussion begins with some historically important interpretive paradigms and methodological metaphors in the natural sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences. Then, within the field of law, a common law narrative, a constitutional narrative, and a community-society paradigm are described and explicated as basic interpretive frameworks of legal decision making.

Are There Nothing But Texts In This Class? Interpreting The Interpretive Turns In Legal Thought, Robin L. West Dec 2000

Are There Nothing But Texts In This Class? Interpreting The Interpretive Turns In Legal Thought, Robin L. West

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Article examines the impact of the twenty-year-old "turn" toward interpretation in legal and constitutional scholarship. In part, because of the impact of Hans-Georg Gadamer's work, scores of critical legal scholars, including some of those writing for this Symposium, now think of adjudication and legal discourse generally as primarily interpretive, rather than economic or political or distinctively legal enterprises. This turn toward interpretation has opened the way for new insights and ways of thinking, but it has also come with costs. It has, for example, diverted attention from the ways in which constitutional law might be appropriately criticized by reference …

Palaeoecological Implications Of Archaeological Seal Bone Assemblages: Case Studies From Labrador And Baffin Island, James M. Woollett, Anne S. Henshaw, Cameron P. Wake Dec 2000

Palaeoecological Implications Of Archaeological Seal Bone Assemblages: Case Studies From Labrador And Baffin Island, James M. Woollett, Anne S. Henshaw, Cameron P. Wake

Earth Sciences

. In recent years, increasing scientific attention has been paid to sea mammals as biological indicators of Arctic environmental change. The usefulness of animals such as ringed seal (Phoca hispida), harp seal (Phoca groenlandica), bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus), and harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) as indicator species is due to the close relationship of their range, reproductive cycles, and life histories to sea ice. The behaviour and distribution of these species correlate with ice conditions in the areas where the animals are encountered. The proportions of seal species represented in archaeological deposits may therefore reflect, at least in part, environmental conditions …

Gis-Based Decision Support For Drained Wetland Resoration In The Eel River Watershed Of N. E. Indiana, Xiangheng Yang Dec 2000

Gis-Based Decision Support For Drained Wetland Resoration In The Eel River Watershed Of N. E. Indiana, Xiangheng Yang

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research is to develop cost-effect and accurate methods to identify optimal restorable drained wetland cropland sites. Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data analysis was used to identify the potential cropland candidate sites in the initial step. The result of digital TM data analysis shows that the overall classification accuracy in identifying classes of potential restoration candidate hydric soils is 86.7%. This accuracy shows that the TM data digital analysis is a cost-effective method for identifying poorly drained cropland hydric soils potentially suitable for wetland conversiOn. To support multi-factorial analysis in the final site screening, a Spatial Decision …

Thermosensitivity Of The Lobster, Homarus Americanus, As Determined By Cardiac Assay, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Steven H. Jury Dec 2000

Thermosensitivity Of The Lobster, Homarus Americanus, As Determined By Cardiac Assay, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Steven H. Jury

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

It is generally accepted that crustaceans detect, and respond to, changes in water temperature, yet few studies have directly addressed their thermosensitivity. In this investigation a cardiac assay was used as an indicator that lobsters (Homarus americanus) sensed a change in temperature. The typical cardiac response of lobsters to a 1-min application of a thermal stimulus, either warmer (n = 19) or colder (n = 17) than the holding temperature of 15 degrees C, consisted of a short bradycardia (39.5 +/- 8.0 s) followed by a prolonged tachycardia (188.2 +/- 10.7 s). Lobsters exposed to a range of rates of …
