A Case For The Place Of Music In The Outdoor Education Program, Marie Bernardy Dec 2000

A Case For The Place Of Music In The Outdoor Education Program, Marie Bernardy

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Knowing this, music can become an indispensable part of outdoor education programs because music summons the basic connections that sustain human life: our fellow humans and the planet Earth. Recognizing nature as the point of origin for sounds in music is to truly touch the roots of music. Recognizing music as a form of communication for humans is to touch the roots of culture. Thus, we have a triad of influences among people, nature and music. This triad is worth exploring in outdoor education programs because of what it can teach participants about themselves and about their world.

Review: The Public Television Series, Journey To Planet Earth, Patrick K. Pryor

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Sensational journalism, dramatic music, real science, and vivid computer animation lead the viewer on a journey across a world of cultures. At each stop one is compelled to feel compassion for the citizens of the far away region, and for those in our own highly developed nation. Although technologically advanced, the US is not immune to the same ecological, political, and racial predicaments. The narrator illuminates this immunity using rhetoric laced with American pride.

Possible Levels Of Animal Consciousness With Reference To Grey Parrots (Psittacus Erithacus), Irene M. Pepperberg, Spencer K. Lynn Dec 2000

Possible Levels Of Animal Consciousness With Reference To Grey Parrots (Psittacus Erithacus), Irene M. Pepperberg, Spencer K. Lynn

Sentience Collection

Researchers often study nonhuman abilities by assuming their subjects form representations about perceived stimuli and then process such information; why then would consciousness be required, and, if required, at what level? Arguments about nonhuman consciousness range from claims of levels comparable to humans to refutation of any need to study such phenomena. We suggest that (a) species exhibit different levels attuned to their ecological niches, and (b) animals, within their maximum possible level, exhibit different extents of awareness appropriate to particular situations, much like humans (presumably conscious) who often act without conscious awareness of factors controlling their behavior. We propose …

Spontaneous Discrimination Of Natural Stimuli By Chimpanzees (Pan Troglodytes), David A. Brown, Sarah T. Boysen

Sentience Collection

Six chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) were presented with pairs of color photographic images of 5 different categories of animals (cat, chimp, gorilla, tiger, fish). The subjects responded to each pair using symbols for "same" and "different." Both within- and between-category discriminations were tested, and all chimpanzees classified the image pairs in accordance with the 5 experimenter-defined categories under conditions of nondifferential reinforcement. Although previous studies have demonstrated identification or discrimination of natural categories by nonhuman animals, subjects were typically differentially reinforced for their responses. The present findings demonstrate that chimpanzees can classify natural objects spontaneously and that such classifications may be …

Animal Minds And Animal Emotions, Marian Stamp Dawkins Dec 2000

Animal Minds And Animal Emotions, Marian Stamp Dawkins

Emotion Collection

The possibility of conscious experiences of emotions in non-human animals has been much less explored than that of conscious experiences associated with carrying out complex cognitive tasks. However, no great cognitive powers are needed to feel hunger or pain and it may be that the capacity to feel emotions is widespread in the animal kingdom. Since plants can show surprisingly sophisticated ‘‘choice’’ and ‘‘decision-making’’ mechanisms and yet we would not wish to imply that they are conscious, attribution of emotions to animals has to be done with care. Whether or not an animal possesses anticipatory mechanisms associated with positive and …

Improving Water Quality Through Bmps For Crop Production Systems Whole Farm Soil And Water Management, J. T. Gilmour, L. R. Frye, N. A. Slaton

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The major objective of this demonstration project was to assess the usefulness of Global Positioning Systems/Geographic Information Systems (GPS/GIS), water testing, soil testing and yield monitoring in a whole farm water and soil management plan. An important part of this objective was to make recommendations to increase crop productivity and decrease the potential for surface water degradation through erosion and runoff at the farm. The farm was located on 2400 acres in the Bayou de View watershed in Monroe County, Arkansas. The farm lies approximately five miles southwest of the town of Brinkley straddling Highway 17 just south of its …

Fisheries Research Report No. 123 - Review Of Productivity Levels Of Western Australian Coastal And Estuarine Waters For Mariculture Planning Purposes, Alan Pearce, Stuart Helleren, Mark Marinelli, Fisheries Western Australia Dec 2000

Fisheries Research Report No. 123 - Review Of Productivity Levels Of Western Australian Coastal And Estuarine Waters For Mariculture Planning Purposes, Alan Pearce, Stuart Helleren, Mark Marinelli, Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries Research Reports

The measurement of chlorophyll-a (a simple estimate of phytoplankton biomass) is often used as an indicator of water quality. Chlorophyll measurements are relatively sparse for most of the Western Australian continental shelf, although there are areas such as the Perth metropolitan coastal zone, Wilson Inlet and the Albany harbours where some intensive studies have been undertaken.

This review of both published and unpublished chlorophyll concentrations in Western Australian waters has shown a high degree of variability in space (both horizontally and vertically) and time, and statistics on the seasonal distribution of chlorophyll have been derived for those regions with sufficient …

Fisheries Research Report No. 124 - The Evaluation Of A Recreational Fishing Stock Enhancement Trial Of Black Bream (Acanthopagrus Butcheri) In The Swan River, Western Australia, C J. Dibden, G. Jenkins, Gavin A. Sarre, R C J Lenanton, Suzanne G. Ayvazian

Fisheries Research Reports

During 1995, a study was undertaken to monitor and evaluate the recovery of Swan River black bream stock which had been supplemented with fish produced from a captive-breeding program. Fish were individually tagged and subsequently released into the Swan River. The objectives of the study were (a) to determine both the survival and the growth rate to a size at which hatchery-reared fish could enter the recreational fishery and (b) whether they could then be caught by the recreational fishers. Of the 767 fish released into the upper Swan River on 28 March 1995, 97 fish (12.6%) were recaptured to …

An analysis of the female characters in this collection of short stories reveals two contradictory images of Woman: on the one hand, the discreet presence of Woman as an oppressed being, subjugated by Islamic dogma and, on the other, the much more salient emancipated woman who transgresses canonical principles. Hence, the appearance of two kinds of couples, both of which are shown to be the site of power struggles that ultimately veer towards a masters/ ave relationship. Pledged to defeat, love is thus presented as no more than a utopic quest.

Madame Arnoul De Jean-Noël Pancrazi : Algérie, Attachements, Arrachements, Anne-Marie Obajtek-Kirkwood

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This work narrates the childhood of a young Pied-Nair in colonial French Algeria, the first twelve years of his love for this colonized country. Yet these years were even more marked by the war which was to tear apart all the inhabitants, natives and colonizers alike, and lead the narrator and his family to exile. The text is therefore deeply structured by the two opposing poles of attachment and wrenching.

Predicted Land Use Changes In Agricultural Areas Of Wa And Resulting Impact On The Extent Of Dryland Salinity, C E. Mcconnell

Resource management technical reports

An assessment of current and possible future land use in Western Australia was undertaken as part of the National Land and Water Resources Audit. This data was used to assess the impact of land use change on the future extent of salinity. It was found that in some areas there is real capacity for changing land use to impact on recharge to the watertable.

From Romanticism To Deep Ecology: The Continuing Evolution In American Environmental Thought, David Ackerson Dec 2000

From Romanticism To Deep Ecology: The Continuing Evolution In American Environmental Thought, David Ackerson

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Nash argues that compared to the millennia of anti-wilderness sentiment. the pace of intellectual change in the previous two centuries is so rapid that it must be considered revolutionary (1982 P. XI). Viewed in the context of human hi story and human attitudes, this is true. However, the actual development of a pro-wilderness viewpoint in America has followed an evolutionary course from the Romantic Movement through Emerson, Thoreau, Muir, and Leopold. The latest, logical manifestation of this evolutionary progress is the philosophy known as deep ecology.

Characterization Of Borrelia Burgdorferi Blya And Blyb Proteins: A Prophage-Encoded Holin-Like System, Christopher J. Damman, Christian H. Eggers, D. Scott Samuels

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The conserved cp32 plasmid family of Borrelia burgdorferi was recently shown to be packaged into a bacteriophage particle (C. H. Eggers and D. S. Samuels, J. Bacteriol. 181:7308-7313, 1999), This plasmid encodes BlyA, a 7.4-kDa membrane-interactive protein, and BlyB, an accessory protein, which were previously proposed to comprise a hemolysis system. Our genetic and biochemical evidence suggests that this hypothesis is incorrect and that BlyA and BlyB function instead as a prophage-encoded holin or holin-like system for this newly described bacteriophage, An Escherichia coli mutant containing the blyAB locus that was defective for the normally cryptic host hemolysin SheA was …

Mrnas Encoding Aquaporins Are Present During Murine Preimplantation Development., H Offenberg, L C Barcroft, A Caveney, D Viuff, P D Thomsen, A J Watson

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

The present study was conducted to investigate the mechanisms underlying fluid movement across the trophectoderm during blastocyst formation by determining whether aquaporins (AQPs) are expressed during early mammalian development. AQPs belong to a family of major intrinsic membrane proteins and function as molecular water channels that allow water to flow rapidly across plasma membranes in the direction of osmotic gradients. Ten different AQPs have been identified to date. Murine preimplantation stage embryos were flushed from the oviducts and uteri of superovulated CD1 mice. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) methods employing primer sets designed to amplify conserved sequences of AQPs (1-9) …
