The Personal Information Protection And Electronic Documents Act: A Lost Opportunity To Democratize Canada's "Technological Society", Tina Piper Oct 2000

The Personal Information Protection And Electronic Documents Act: A Lost Opportunity To Democratize Canada's "Technological Society", Tina Piper

Dalhousie Law Journal

Bill C-6, more recently known as the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, is promoted by the Canadian government as privacy legislation to protect Canadians' personal information. This paper explores that characterization and concludes that it is inaccurate and misleading. The problems that motivated a response by Parliament are the proliferation and commercial importance of personal information, concerns Canadians have about its uncontrolled use by the private sector and the inadequacy of existing law to address those concerns. However, the Act has not responded to these problems. There are several reasons for this, primarily the disproportionate and antidemocratic importance …

The Thousandth Man: A Biography Of James Mcgregor Stewart By Barry Cahill, Timothy C. Matthews

Dalhousie Law Journal

Barry Cahill, senior government archivist at Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management, and former editor of the Nova Scotia Historical Review, has painstakingly delved into the social, political, educational and legal atmosphere of the late nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth centuries in Nova Scotia, by researching and writing a fascinating biography of James McGregor Stewart, now published on behalf of the Osgoode Society. The book succeeds in portraying both the humanity of this Renaissance man and his pivotal role in so many different milieux, such that Canadian Lawyer could and would refer to him as the most …

Lambing-Time Management, Jeff Held, Dale Miskimins Oct 2000

Lambing-Time Management, Jeff Held, Dale Miskimins

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Sheep respond remarkably well to sound management, especially during lambing. The success of a lambing season often will be determined well before the birth of the first lamb. Decisions and action before the flock starts lambing can result in more pounds of lamb weaned per ewe, with excellent economic return to labor. Lambing a flock usually involves high labor input compared to the remainder of the year, but there’s a limit to the hours a person can devote to lambing barn activities. Therefore, it’s extremely important to be organized and to establish a plan to follow before the newborn lambs …

Atrazine Induction Of Cytochrome P450 In Chironomus Tentans Larvae, Francisca Miota, Blair Siegfried, Michael E. Scharf, Michael J. Lydy Oct 2000

Atrazine Induction Of Cytochrome P450 In Chironomus Tentans Larvae, Francisca Miota, Blair Siegfried, Michael E. Scharf, Michael J. Lydy

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Cytochrome P450-dependent aldrin epoxidation was characterized in third instar larvae of the aquatic midge, Chironomus tentans. Optimal in vitro assay conditions for the epoxidase were pH 7.6 and 31°C. Activity was linear up to 40 min of incubation time and 0.5 mg microsomal protein per incubation. The activity was concentrated in the mic rosomal fraction of whole body homogenates and was NADPH-dependent. The effect of atrazine exposure on aldrin epoxidase was measured to determine if this herbicide induces cytochrome P450-dependent activity. Comparisons of control and atrazine-exposed midges indicated increased epoxidase activity as a result of atrazine exposure, and a …

Round Spermatid Separation And In-Vitro Maturation, Hassan S. Jamal, Zouhair O. Amarin Oct 2000

Round Spermatid Separation And In-Vitro Maturation, Hassan S. Jamal, Zouhair O. Amarin

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To combine 2 methods; spermatid isolation and in-vitro maturation to improve their quality and enhance their ability of fertilization. METHODS: A discontinuous Percoll gradient was used to separate immature germ cells. Co-culture with Vero cells was attempted to convert round spermatids into more mature forms. In total 87 spermatids were studied. RESULTS: Of a final number of 77 round spermatids only 12 (15.5%) showed a certain degree of maturation in 3 out of 7 patients (42%). Of those 12 maturing spermatids, only 4 developed to an early elongated spermatid stage Sc1, but without flagella. CONCLUSION: Considering the limited in-vitro …

Personal Income Taxes And The Growth Of Small Firms, Robert Carroll, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Mark Rider, Harvey S. Rosen Oct 2000

Personal Income Taxes And The Growth Of Small Firms, Robert Carroll, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Mark Rider, Harvey S. Rosen

Center for Policy Research

This paper investigates the effect of entrepreneurs’ personal income tax situations on the growth rates of their enterprises. We analyze the personal income tax returns of a large number of sole proprietors before and after the Tax Reform Act of 1986 and determine how the substantial reductions in marginal tax rates associated with that law affected the growth of their firms as measured by gross receipts. We find that individual income taxes exert a statistically and quantitatively significant influence on firm growth rates. Raising the sole proprietor’s tax price (one minus the marginal tax rate) by 10 percent increases receipts …

Eucalypt Woodlands A Guide To Management, Liz Brown, Colin Holt

Natural resources published reports

This guide was mainly developed using information gathered from studies in Salmon gum (E. salmonophloia) woodlands. However, the principles in this guide can be broadly applied as it considers the general ecological processes that occur within most woodlands.

If your goal is to restore a woodland to a healthy, functioning unit with a range of original species, this guide provides a way of diagnosing the health of individual woodlands and some of the causes of poor health. It also suggests some relevant management actions.

There is a huge array of different types of Euclaypr Woodlands in the Western Australian Whearbelr, …

Reinventing Structural Reform Litigation: Deputizing Private Citizens In The Enforcement Of Civil Rights, Myriam E. Gilles Oct 2000

Reinventing Structural Reform Litigation: Deputizing Private Citizens In The Enforcement Of Civil Rights, Myriam E. Gilles

Articles

The aim of this Article is to explore the possibility of constructing a model that harnesses the power of private citizens to reform unconstitutional practices, particularly in the critical area of police-related rights violations. I seek here to reintegrate private citizens into the enforcement of public laws; to tap the private experiential and financial resources that were a necessary condition of the great structural reform efforts of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

The vehicle by which I propose to accomplish these ends is a simple, yet novel, amendment to 42 U.S.C. § 14141, the statute which …

Genomic Structure Of Murine Mitochondrial Dna Polymerase-Gamma., Justin L. Mott, Grace Denniger, Steve J. Zullo, H. Peter Zassenhaus Oct 2000

Genomic Structure Of Murine Mitochondrial Dna Polymerase-Gamma., Justin L. Mott, Grace Denniger, Steve J. Zullo, H. Peter Zassenhaus

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

We have sequenced a genomic clone of the gene encoding the mouse mitochondrial DNA polymerase. The gene consists of 23 exons, which span approximately 13.2 kb, with exons ranging in size from 53 to 768 bp. All intron-exon boundaries conform to the GT-AG rule. By comparison with the human genomic sequence, we found remarkable conservation of the gene structure; the intron-exon borders are in almost identical locations for the 22 introns. The 5' upstream region contains approximately 300 bp of homology between the mouse and human sequences that presumably contain the promoter element. This region lacks any obvious TATA domain …

Induction Of Apoptosis In Human Prostate Cancer Cells By Resveratrol, Gary Zulfikar Morris Oct 2000

Induction Of Apoptosis In Human Prostate Cancer Cells By Resveratrol, Gary Zulfikar Morris

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Recently attention has been brought to trans-resveratrol's {TR) anticancer activity, as determined through a number of cultured cancer cell models. This activity was attributed to TR behaving as an estrogen, and the orientation of TR' s hydroxyl groups. Based on this work it was of interest to determine whether TR would also be toxic in prostate cancer cells; if toxic, did TR induce necrosis or apoptosis in the cells; was it toxic through hormone mediated pathways; and were TR's hydroxyl groups responsible for its biological activity. To this end, cellular viability was assessed in two different prostate cancer cell …

Studies Related To The Design And Implementation Of A Magnetic Suspension And Balance System, Syed Adeel Akhtar Jafri Oct 2000

Studies Related To The Design And Implementation Of A Magnetic Suspension And Balance System, Syed Adeel Akhtar Jafri

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents studies related to the magnetic suspension and balance system (MSBS) of the Princeton/ONR High Reynolds Number Testing Facility (HRTF). The main motivation for developing the MSBS is to provide interference free aero/hydrodynamic testing of submersible models, which will lead to more accurate measurements. From the controls point of view, the main specification of the MSBS is to robustly control the position of a submersible model in five degrees of freedom (DOF), including three translational as well as pitching and yawing positions. The MSBS should not only regulate the submersible model's position but should also allow for small …
