A recent agreement between the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Pork Producers Council puts into place a voluntary inspection program that may lead to reduced fines for pork producers who report and correct Clean Water Act violations This agreement represents the first of its kind between an agriculture group and the Environmental Protection Agency.2 This Article explores the background that led to the agreement. The evolution from small family farming to large corporate livestock production, along with the environmental concerns such evolution has produced, is traced. In an effort to combat the rising cost of health care in the United States by encouraging preventative and self-care, the federal government passed the Dietary Supplement Health Education Act of 1994. This act essentially deregulated the natural product market allowing herbs, including yohimbine, to be sold over the counter without undergoing the same strict evaluation as a traditional synthetic drug candidate. As the full potential of these natural products is realized, including possible harmful side effects, a need arises for the identification and quantitation of the active components from commercial preparations. Slow-Binding Inhibition Of The Aminopeptidase From Aeromonas Proteolytica By Peptide Thiols: Synthesis And Spectroscopic Characterization, Kristi M. Huntington, David L. Bienvenue, Yaoming Wei, Brian Bennett, Richard C. Holz, Dehua Pei

Peptide-derived thiols of the general structure N-mercaptoacyl-leucyl-p-nitroanilide (1a−c) were synthesized and found to be potent, slow-binding inhibitors of the aminopeptidase from Aeromonas proteolytica (AAP). The overall potencies (K_I*) of these inhibitors against AAP range from 2.5 to 57 nM exceeding that of the natural product bestatin and approaching that of amastatin. The corresponding alcohols (2a−b) are simple competitive inhibitors of much lower potencies (K_I = 23 and 360 μM). These data suggest that the free thiols are involved in the formation of the E·I …

Regulating Through Information: Disclosure Laws And American Health Care, William M. Sage

Efforts to reform the American health care system through direct government action have failed repeatedly. Nonetheless, an alternative strategy has emerged from these experiences: requiring insurance organizations and health care providers to disclose information to the public. In this Article, Professor Sage assesses the justifications for this type of regulation and its prospects. In particular, he identifies and analyzes four distinct rationales for disclosure. He finds that the most commonly articulated goal of mandatory disclosure laws-improving the efficiency of private purchasing decisions by giving purchasers complete information about price and quality- is the most complicated operationally.
