Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrel (Sciuridae: Spermophilus Tridecemlineatus) Antipredator Vigilance: Monitoring The Sky For Aerial Predators, Cody L. Arenz, Daniel Leger

Despite the success of antipredator vigilance research, the specific focus of this vigilance has been difficult to determine. We have previously shown that thirteen-lined ground squirrels (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus) increase their vigilance when their lateral field of view is obstructed. In this paper, we describe an experiment in which we attempt to determine the predator class for which this vigilance is directed. Using six differentially occluded Plexiglas foraging boxes with hinged “eaves,” we were able to obstruct the squirrels’ view of the sky while not obstructing their view of terrestrial threats. A Risk-Amplification Model Of Victimization And Depressive Symptoms Among Runaway And Homeless Adolescents, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kevin Yoder

This report is an examination of a theoretical model of risk amplification within a sample of 255 homeless and runaway adolescents. The young people were interviewed on the streets and in shelters in urban centers of four Midwestern states. Separate models were examined for males (n = 102) and females (n = 153). Results indicated that street experiences such as affiliation with deviant peers, deviant subsistence strategies, risky sexual behaviors, and drug and/or alcohol use amplified the effects of early family abuse on victimization and depressive symptoms for young women. Portions of penis and prepuce were collected from 24 bulls with current or recent Tritrichomonas foetus infection. Epididymides were collected from seven of the bulls, and seminal vesicles and prostate were collected from four. Following immunohistochemical staining with two monoclonal antibodies (34.7C4.4 and TF1.15) prepared against T. foetus surface antigens, trichomonads were identified in sections from 15 of the bulls. Organisms were most often located in penile crypts in the midshaft and caudal regions and less often in preputial crypts. Trichomonads were not observed in sections from other genitalia or in subepithelial tissue. T. foetus antigen, however, was present in …

The accumulation of functional neurotransmitter receptors by neurons during development is an essential part of synapse formation. Chick ciliary ganglion neurons express two kinds of nicotinic receptors. One is abundant, contains the α7 gene product, rapidly desensitizes, and binds α-bungarotoxin. The other is less abundant, contains multiple gene products (α3, β4, α5, and β2 subunits), slowly desensitizes, and binds the monoclonal antibody mAb 35. Sarcomere disruptions are observed in the adductor longus (AL) muscles following voluntary reloading of spaceflown and hindlimb suspension unloaded (HSU) rat, which resemble lesions in eccentrically challenged muscle. We devised and tested an eccentric contraction (ECCON) test system for the 14-day HSU rat AL. Six to 7 hours following ECCON, ALs were fixed to allow immunostaining and electron microscopy (EM). Toluidine blue-stained histology semithin sections were screened for lesion density (#/mm²). Serial semithin sections from the ECCON group were characterized for myosin immunointensity of lesions. Part I of this article briefly examines some of the drawbacks and inconsistencies of Title VII sexual harassment jurisprudence and shows that Title VII does not provide an adequate framework for understanding many common forms of workplace harassment. Title VII is unquestionably a critical means of fighting against workplace discrimination; however, by emphasizing discrimination at the expense of dignity, the Title VII workplace harassment paradigm provides an incomplete understanding of the wrongs of workplace harassment.

The elicited M-Wave that results from the surface stimulation of the median nerve is highly dependent upon the geometric orientation of the stimulus electrode dipole. This phenomenon could make standardization of M-Wave measurements between tests performed on a single subject problematic. We present an experimental paradigm that illustrates this variability in terms of an estimate of the slope of the M-Wave peak potential versus stimulus current amplitude and the minimum stimulus current required to consistently elicit a minimal response. The Peel-Harvey Coastal Plain Catchment is located immediately south of Perth in Western Australia and covers approximately 190,000 ha. It extends from Forrestdale in the north to Harvey in the south, and west from the Darling Scarp to Mandurah on the coast. The boundary of the catchment, as illustrated in Figure 1, represents the area which has been approved by the DEP for the broadscale application of Alkaloam as a soil amendment. This Comment argues that the parties to the International Conference on Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Regulation of Pharmaceutical Drugs (ITCH) should adopt more specific guidelines for pediatric research than those included in its Good Clinical Practice Guidelines (ICH GCP), and analyzes their attempt to do so in the Draft Guideline on Pediatric Trials. Part I of this Comment outlines the genesis of the current international guidelines for human research and how they relate to pediatric subjects.
