The Relationship Between Perceived Job Pressure And Self-Reported Bulimia Symptoms Among Female Las Vegas Production Show Dancers, Ann Blyth Bullis Jan 1999

The Relationship Between Perceived Job Pressure And Self-Reported Bulimia Symptoms Among Female Las Vegas Production Show Dancers, Ann Blyth Bullis

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between weight oriented job pressure and bulimic symptomatology among female Las Vegas production show dancers. Surveys were distributed to approximately 100 dancers at the professional level in the Las Vegas area at the professional dance and Pilates studios as well as backstage at two of the shows. The surveys measured perceived weight oriented job pressure, body dissatisfaction in response to weight oriented job pressure, and differences in self-reported attribution between symptomatic bulimic and non-bulimic dancers. This study may provide evidence for the need to implement prevention measures for this at-risk …

Regulating Reproductive Technologies In Canada, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Albert Wallrap Jan 1999

Regulating Reproductive Technologies In Canada, Roxanne Mykitiuk, Albert Wallrap

Articles & Book Chapters

This chapter will identify and examine some of the major legal issues raised by the development and proliferation of technologies involved in assisted reproduction. It will review the application of existing legal principles, statutes and common law rules to these issues, and will illustrate the uncertainty present in the current legal regime in Canada. The chapter will then evaluate the need for a unified regulatory framework for reproductive technologies ("RTs").' While the focus of the chapter is an identification and review of the legal issues, it should be understood that these are shaped in a moral, ethical and social context.

Legal Forms, Family Forms, Gender Norms: What Is A Spouse?, Shelley A. M. Gavigan Jan 1999

Legal Forms, Family Forms, Gender Norms: What Is A Spouse?, Shelley A. M. Gavigan

Articles & Book Chapters

The limits of the normative nature of law may be illustrated in the current English Canadian context by apparently contradictory phenomena: Legal defeats of welfare mothers (e.g. Masse and Falkiner), and the legal victories of lesbian mothers (Re K). Drawing upon Fine, this paper employs the analytic frame of form and content to analyse contradictions within the legal form, notably in respect of the definition of spouse and the regulation of relations of property and poverty, and the struggles of lesbian parents who have applied to the courts to formalize their relationships to their children by way of adoption, and …

An Iron-Based Ecosystem Model Of The Central Equatorial Pacific, Carrie L. Leonard, Charles R. Mcclain, Ragu Murtugudde, Eileen E. Hofmann, Lawrence W. Harding Jr. Jan 1999

An Iron-Based Ecosystem Model Of The Central Equatorial Pacific, Carrie L. Leonard, Charles R. Mcclain, Ragu Murtugudde, Eileen E. Hofmann, Lawrence W. Harding Jr.

CCPO Publications

The central and eastern equatorial Pacific region is characterized by lower than expected phytoplankton biomass and primary production given the relatively high ambient nitrate concentrations. These unusual conditions have spawned several field programs and laboratory experiments to determine why this high nitrate-low chlorophyll pattern persists in this region. To synthesize the results from these field programs, as well as providing additional evidence in support of the iron hypothesis, we developed a one-dimensional, nine-component ecosystem model of 0 degrees N 140 degrees W. The model components include two phytoplankton size fractions, two zooplankton size fractions, two detrital size fractions, dissolved iron, …

Modeling The Msx Parasite In Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Populations. Iii. Regional Application And The Problem Of Transmission, Eric N. Powell, John M. Klinck, Susan E. Ford, Eileen E. Hofmann, Stephen J. Jordon Jan 1999

Modeling The Msx Parasite In Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Populations. Iii. Regional Application And The Problem Of Transmission, Eric N. Powell, John M. Klinck, Susan E. Ford, Eileen E. Hofmann, Stephen J. Jordon

CCPO Publications

A model of transmission for Haplosporidium nelsoni, the disease agent for MSX disease, is developed and applied to sites in Delaware Bay and Chesapeake Bay. The environmental factors that force the oyster population- H. nelsoni model are salinity, temperature, food, and total suspended solids. The simulated development of MSX disease was verified using 3 time series of disease prevalence and intensity: 1960 to 1970 and 1980 to 1990 for Delaware Bay, and 1980 to 1994 for Chesapeake Bay, and for a series of sites covering the salinity gradient in each bay. Additional simulations consider the implications of assumptions made …

Modeling The Msx Parasite In Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Populations. Ii. Salinity Effects, Michelle C. Paraso, Susan E. Ford, Eric N. Powell, Eileen E. Hofmann, John M. Klinck Jan 1999

Modeling The Msx Parasite In Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Populations. Ii. Salinity Effects, Michelle C. Paraso, Susan E. Ford, Eric N. Powell, Eileen E. Hofmann, John M. Klinck

CCPO Publications

An oyster population model coupled with a model for Haplosporidium nelsoni, the causative agent of the oyster disease MSX, was used with salinity time-series constructed from Delaware River flow measurements to study environmentally-induced variations in the annual cycle of this disease in Delaware Bay oyster populations. Model simulations for the lower Bay (high salinity) sire reproduced the annual cycle observed in lower Delaware Bay. Simulations at both upper Bay (low salinity) and lower Bay sites produced prevalences and intensities that were consistent with field observations. At all sites, low freshwater discharge resulted in increased disease levels, whereas high freshwater …

Modeling The Msx Parasite In Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Populations. I. Model Development, Implementation, And Verification, Susan Ford, Eric Powell, John Klinck, Eileen Hofmann Jan 1999

Modeling The Msx Parasite In Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica) Populations. I. Model Development, Implementation, And Verification, Susan Ford, Eric Powell, John Klinck, Eileen Hofmann

CCPO Publications

A mathematical model simulating the host-parasite-environmental interactions of eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) and the pathogen, Haplosporidium nelsoni, which causes MSX disease, has been developed. The model has 2 components. One replicates the infection process within the oyster and the other simulates transmission. The infection-development component relies on basic physiological processes of both host and parasite, modified by the environment, to reproduce the observed annual prevalence cycle of H. nelsoni. Equations describing these rates were constructed using data from long-term field observations, and field and laboratory experiments. In the model, salinity and temperature have direct effects upon …

Frontogenesis In The North Pacific Oceanic Frontal Zones--A Numerical Simulation, Michael S. Dinniman, Michele M. Rienecker Jan 1999

Frontogenesis In The North Pacific Oceanic Frontal Zones--A Numerical Simulation, Michael S. Dinniman, Michele M. Rienecker

CCPO Publications

A primitive equation model [Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory's (GFDL's) MOM 2] with one degree horizontal resolution is used to simulate the seasonal cycle of frontogenesis in the subarctic frontal zone (SAFZ) and the subtropical frontal zone (STFZ) of the North Pacific Ocean. The SAFZ in the model contains deep (greater than 500 m in some places) regions with seasonally varying high gradients in temperature and salinity. The gradients generally weaken toward the east. The STFZ consists of a relatively shallow (less than 200 m in most places) region of high gradient in temperature that disappears in the summer/fall. The high …

Modification Of No, Po, And No/Po During Flow Across The Bering And Chukchi Shelves: Implications For Use As Arctic Water Mass Tracers, Lee W. Cooper, Glenn F. Cota, Lawrence R. Pomeroy, Jacqueline M. Grebmeier, Terry E. Whitledge Jan 1999

Modification Of No, Po, And No/Po During Flow Across The Bering And Chukchi Shelves: Implications For Use As Arctic Water Mass Tracers, Lee W. Cooper, Glenn F. Cota, Lawrence R. Pomeroy, Jacqueline M. Grebmeier, Terry E. Whitledge

CCPO Publications

The NO and PO tracers (9[NO3-] + 02 and 135[PO4-] + 02, respectively,) and their derivative NO/PO have found increasing use in Arctic water mass analyses for identifying the specific basin or shelf areas from which surface waters originate, based upon assumed differences in Pacific- and Atlantic-derived content and basin-to-basin differences within the Arctic. Following shipboard sampling in June-September 1993 and May-June 1994, both north and south of Bering Strait, we have found evidence that Pacific-derived waters flowing north to Bering Strait do not necessarily have any unique NO, PO, or NO/PO identity that would permit …

Challenges For Science And Mathematics Faculty, S. T. Thornton Jan 1999

Challenges For Science And Mathematics Faculty, S. T. Thornton

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The increased science and mathematics teacher licensure requirements for K-8 teachers are clearly necessary to prepare teachers to appropriately teach the new Virginia SOLs [1]; The expectations of a program equivalent to 12 hours of science and 12 hours of mathematics for the PreK-6 endorsement and the 21 hours each of math and science to teach middle school math and science must be chosen very carefully indeed if future teachers are to be prepared to teach the specific SOL content, as well as "practical applications and the use of appropriate technology“. Most Virginia colleges and universities are not currently offering …

A New Interdisciplinary Mathematics And Science Course, P. E. Mcneil Jan 1999

A New Interdisciplinary Mathematics And Science Course, P. E. Mcneil

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

As Norfolk State University has been considering how to adequately prepare students to teach the challenging new mathematics and science called for the Virginia Standards of Learning [1], we have reached the conclusion that the student programs need to provide interdisciplinary experiences linking mathematics and science. We reached the conclusion for two reasons. First, even with the larger number of courses called for in the new licensure regulations, there are not enough course hours available to teach all of the different mathematics and science topics that future teachers need to have studied. Second, elementary and middle school students do not …

Application Of The Fdtd Method For The Analysis Of Finite-Sized Phased Array Microstrip Antennas, Javier Gomez Tagle Rangel Jan 1999

Application Of The Fdtd Method For The Analysis Of Finite-Sized Phased Array Microstrip Antennas, Javier Gomez Tagle Rangel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method has gained tremendous popularity in the past decade as a tool for solving Maxwell's equations. Phased Array Antennas find several applications including mobile communications ( cellular, personal communication systems and networks), satellite communications, global positioning system (GPS), aeronautical and radar systems. This dissertation describes the application of the FDTD method for calculating broadband characteristics of finite-sized phased array antennas consisting of microstrip elements fed with coaxial probes.

The characterization of such antennas is dependent upon the development of simulation tools that can accurately model general topologies including wires, dielectrics, conductors lumped elements and metallic strips. …
