Rubisco is an enzyme that catalyzes the first reaction in the Calvin Cycle in photosynthesis. Since it is a poor catalyst, research has attempted to improve the rate at which it fixes carbon because this could in turn increase crop yields, in plants, Rubisco is regulated by light but the evolution of regulatory proteins and mechanisms is unknown. By studying Rubisco activity in photosynthetic bacteria, the origins of its regulation can be explored, we grew purple nonsulfur bacteria on two main substrates and used a culture grown in constant light conditions as a control. Study Of The Molecular Basis Of Diabetic Retinopathy, Heather Christine Glasscock-Hatcher

Abnormalities of the retinal vasculature contribute significantly to the development of diabetic retinopathy. In this study we have focused on two mechanisms which may be responsible-for the development and progression of this diabetic complication. Chronic hyperglycemia is associated with many of the vascular complications of diabetes mellitus; therefore, we examined mechanisms by which high-dose glucose damages retinal capillary endothelial cells. Our cell count results showed that high-dose glucose induces cell death in primary cultured human retinal capillary endothelial cells. Flow cytometry, in situ cell death detection, and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the cell death occurred via the apoptosis pathway …

An epizootic causing mortality among cultured summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus occurred in summer of 1998 at a land-based facility on Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA. The disease, flounder infectious necrotizing enteritis (FINE), was characterized by reddening around the anal area, distended abdomens filled with opaque serosanguineous fluid, enteritis and necrosis of the posterior intestine. In extreme cases of the disease, the posterior intestine was detached from the anus and was observed coming out the vent. The intestine of individuals that recovered from the dsease ended in a blind-sac; the abdomens of these fish were distended, due to food and water …

A review of the legal regime governing the shipments of radioactive materials reveals an array of preventive and emergency measures as well as liability and compensation measures. The legal regime, however, does not provide any voice to all potentially affected entities, particularly developing Coastal States and the marine environment. The legal regime must be transformed in order to take the above interests into consideration. Any reform in the legal system must start with an evaluation of the ethics and philosophy underlying the system. For a good part of the last fifty years, Canadian oceans governance has consisted of single-sectoral and multi-jurisdictional regulation of oceans uses. This fragmented governance régime has proven ill-equipped to address multisectoral resource use conflicts, which necessitate the integration of various interdependent sea use relationships. As early as the 1970s, international fora and documents began developing the notion of integrated coastal and ocean management [hereinafter ICOM] as an approach to international and national oceans governance in order to address sea use conflicts. At the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in 1994, the nations of the world agreed to give special attention to girls’ education, women’s health, infant survival, and women’s empowerment, and to provide comprehensive reproductive health (RH) services to enable couples to achieve their reproductive goals. The government of India launched a reproductive and child health program in October 1997. This book begins a review of the processes underway to operationalize the program. Perceived Empathy In Self-Help Books, Jerome M. Spector
Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine whether written self-help materials conveyed empathy and whether reader's perceptions of empathy could be measured. Subjects (N = 65) were asked to rate 6 passages from 3 books on 2 questions derived from Rogers' (1961) restatement rule, and make a hypothetical choice among the authors as therapists. Using paired sample t tests, it was found that the mean differences in the ratings in 9 out of 12 cases were significant. One choice of therapist outcome out of the 2 was significant, x2 (2, N = 55) = 37.673, p < 0.001. It was concluded that the results supported theories that empathy, as a pluralistic concept, was inherent in written materials, and could be measured.

UNIVERSITY, Miss. -- The University of Mississippi is keeping good company. According to Dr. Elizabeth Payne, professor of history and director of the McDonnell-Barksdale Honors College, Ole Miss is one of only 10 institutions in the United States that produced both a Rhodes and a Truman scholar in the 1998-99 academic year. Others included Yale, Harvard, Duke, Stanford and Howard universities; the universities of Texas at Austin, Chicago and New Mexico; and the U.S. Military Academy.

This research examined effects of hypoxic environments on blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus in an estuarine environment. Hypoxic conditions were treated as a multiple stressor involving low dissolved oxygen (D.O.), increased carbon dioxide (hypercapnia), and low pH concurrently. The objectives were to: 1) identify hypoxiahypercapnia by monitoring D.O. and pH as an indicator of hypercapnia in shallow regions of the York River, 2) measure blue crab abundance, and 3) describe blue crab responses to hypoxiahypercapnia via field work at Taskinas Creek and lab measurements of respiration.
